Sunday, October 6, 2058 CHAMPS IN 7 IN '58 PRO CUP SERIES Actually, it's a match made in Heaven... two strong offenses will always delight the fans... that's exactly what you get in the Arlon Champions and the Crystal Lake Skippers... but no one expected them to get this far in the playoffs... Crystal Lake was the 4th overall pick and Arlon was the 7th choice to win this year... both clubs were supposed to lose out in the first round to two IPA elites, the Valmara Vipers and the Midway Wolves... the Skippers and Champions used high-octane arsenals to defeat the Vipers and the Wolves... they just had enough pitching to survive and no more. 62 teams have come and gone this year... we're down to just two... one of them will be crowned the IPA Pro Cup champion in the next week... and which one will it be?... Crystal Lake or Arlon?... who will prevail in the quest for the prestigious Pro Cup?... the Skippers and Champions will tangle in a best-of-seven series beginning this Monday afternoon... the opening two games will be at Derby Downs in Arlon. Crystal Lake has won two Pro Cups in its history... they defeated Ozarka in '20 and Midway in '22... they also reached the Pro Cup Finals in '27 and '34, but fell to Southport and North Hills... Arlon only has one Pro Cup trophy... they won it in '51 over the Waleska Westerners... in '39 the Champs lost to the Westerners. Most of the media this year are giving the edge to Arlon in the Finals... they have been impressed with the postseason play of the Champs...they whipped the high-scoring Midway Wolves in round one and then easily handled the pitching heavyweight and light-hitting Southport Sun Sox in the Tycobbian Finals... the decisive factor is pitching in this year's IPA Finals... the edge go to Arlon in seven games... the Champions will also have the homefield advantage. Erik Branham (18-5/3.12) and Dicky Towers (19-11/3.17) anchor a fine Arlon mound staff with the reliable veterans Ty Coffee (17-19/3.57) and J. C. Hilburn (8-5/3.63) in the secondary starting roles... Crystal Lake can only counter with Merle Pitts (23-6/2.35) and Robin Norborne (21-11/4.32)... Pitts is a bonafide star pitcher, but Norborne won many games with great offensive support... after these two, manager Duncan Welch has to try and conjure up something magical with the likes of relievers Julio Cordova (1-4/3.94), Stan Waterhouse (4-0/2.78 ERA/2 saves/19 G) and Eamon Wilkinson (4-2/3.94 ERA/1 save/31 G)... none of them made any starts the regular season... David Plant (6-6/3.96) would seem a better choice to start, but Arlon whipped southpaws most of the time (.733)... they have a tougher time with right-handers (.550). In the bullpen the Champions have a decided advantage with Mack Blair (4-2/2.23 ERA/24 saves/44 games)... the Skippers' closer Yuri Kirchoff (4-4/3.31 ERA/29 saves/49 G) was inconsistent this year... manager Mark Cameron also has available his fifth starter, Oscar Mathewson (14-8/3.79) to use in long relief. It's a standoff in the batting orders... Arlon features Jaimey Stansfield (.262 BA/44 HR/116 RBI/98 R/15 SB), Art Catlin (.278/25/93/92/6 SB), Jon Cress (.327/25/80/67), Mel Hawkes (.290/11/64/79), Zeppo Thiel (.279/16/58/66/13 SB) and Eduardo Garaza (.270/15/66/56/1 SB), while Crystal Lake has Gib Conlan (.288 BA/26 HR/110 RBI/85 R/1 SB), Zippy Coburn (.320/27/103/91/7 SB), Mel Brouwer (.343/29/94/114/18 SB), Jasper Shackleford (.315/28/91/100) and Speedy McCormick (.305/25/61/111/17 SB). If Arlon's pitchers can keep the Crystal Lake bats under control, that will the key element in the series... for the Skippers to have a chance, they will have to continue to put runs on the scoreboard in heavy doses... plus, the young secondary starters Cordova, Waterhouse and Wilkinson will also have to come through for Welch... that's a tall order. Well, looks like RUST got the Champions. Or, at least, that will be one of the story lines around Arlon and the rest of Islandia. Let's see if the Champions can dig in and make this a series.

Sunday, October 13, 2058 PRO CUP HERO COBURN WIN PRO CUP MVP It was a fitting end to a great season for Crystal Lake's Zippy Coburn... not only did he hit the game-winning homer in the fifth and final game of the Pro Cup Series, Coburn also was acclaimed the 2058 Pro Cup Most Valuable Player... Coburn outpolled four of his Skipper teammates for the award... he received 60 of the 185 votes to beat out Jasper Shackleford (40), Mel Brouwer (35), Robin Norborne (25) and Gib Conlan (15)... coming in sixth in The Islandian Times' poll was Arlon's fine outfielder Zeppo Thiel with 10 votes. The 29-year-old Coburn had a fine postseason with a .284 batting average in 17 games... the 8-year veteran outfielder went 21-for-74 with 6 doubles, 6 homers, 19 RBIs and 14 runs and led Crystal Lake to their third Pro Cup with a 5-game victory over Arlon... in the regular campaign Coburn hit .323 with 27 home runs and 103 RBIs... he also made the Ruthlandian All-Star team for the second time in his career. Third baseman Shackleford posted some standout numbers, too, with a .386 BA (27-70), 4 HR, 15 RBI and 16 R... center fielder Brouwer hit a skyhigh .411 (30-73) with 3 roundtrippers, 9 ribbies and 16 runs... pitcher Robin Norborne was unbeaten in 4 postseason starts, winding up 3-0 with a fine 2.40 ERA... Conlan hit .310 (18-58) with 3 HR, 12 RBI and 12 runs scored... Thiel was sixth in the voting... in 16 games the left fielder batted .375 (27-72) with 5 homers, 14 RBI and 17 R to lead the Champions to a runner-up spot in the IPA title series. Nice run by Arlon. Skippers were just a better team in the championship series. It was amazing how the bats for both teams seemed to fizzle out in the last couple of games.

As far as the last two games... in game four J. C. Hilburn rose to the occasion... he has always been good in critical playoff games... Hilburn has been a fine pitcher in his career with Arlon... going 141-99 in 8 years with a solid 3.21 ERA... he also seems to be tough in the postseason... 5-4 in 12 starts with a 3.84 ERA... Hilburn was 3-1 in the playoffs this season in 4 starts with a 3.86 ERA. Even though 24-year-old Julio Cordova hasn't been a starter... he did well in relief this year and in previous years with a 16-17 mark in 180 relief appearances with 17 saves and a 3.80 ERA... Cordova has played 5 years with the Lakers... he did well in both his postseason starts... going 6 innings against Wynnamac in the RU Finals and holding them to 1 run... and Cordova kept Crystal Lake close in game four of the Pro Cup Finals... he was the losing pitcher in a 4-3 loss in game four. Sunday, October 13, 2058 IPA GOLDEN BATS HONOR BENFORD AND BLACKFORD Two heavy-hitting first sackers took the Islandian Pro Alliance Golden Bat Awards this year... both were first-time winners... Valmara's Timmy Benford was honored as the Ruthlandian Union Golden Bat and Oxford's Buddy Blackford was chosen as the Tycobbian Union Golden Bat. Benford led the Vipers to the RU North title with a . 321 BA in 148 games with 194 hits, 40 roundtrippers, 140 RBIs and 101 runs scored... he topped the IPA and the RU in runs batted in... Benford is just 22 years old and in his fourth season. Second in the Ruthlandian Golden Bat voting was the IPA-leading batter, Enos Benham, who hit a lofty .379 for Wynnamac... the Sundowners came in first in the RU East race... overall Benham rapped 207 hits in 145 games with 24 homers, 93 RBIs and 100 runs... this was his seventh season with the Macs... Benham is 27 and is also a first baseman. Coming in third in the RU Golden Bat competition was Crystal Lake's outfielder Mel Brouwer... he helped pace the Skippers to the Ruthlandian South title with a .343 BA in 145 games... Brouwer collected 192 hits with 29 home runs, 94 ribbies, 114 runs and 18 stolen bases... he is a two-year vet with the Skippers and is 26 years old. The Tycobbian Golden Bat winner, Buddy Blackford, had to overcome some very tough competition... Blackford had a monster season with 56 homers, 132 RBIs and 115 runs scored... he was first in the IPA in homers, second in RBIs and fifth in runs... Blackford is just 22 and just completed his second year with the Oxford Red Caps... in 151 games he batted .282 and sparked the Red Caps to a very close third-place finish in the Tycobbian North Division... they lost the pennant to the Arlon Champions by just three games. Blackford's main challengers were 5-time Golden Bat winner Norishige Ito of the Midway Wolves and Bob Purkey of the South Fork Stallions... both outfielders had much higher batting averages than Blackford, but the voters apparently liked his high-powered production... second in the Tycobbian Golden Bat was Norishige Ito... in his 12th season the 31-year-old Ito played in 148 games and sparked the Wolves to the TU East title with a .334 BA, 194 hits, 41 homers, 112 RBIs and 120 runs. South Fork outfielder Bob Purkey was in the third spot in the TU Golden Bat balloting... his Stallions finished fourth in the Tycobbian East pennant chase... at age 25, Purkey had his best year ever with a .332 BA in 146 games with 190 hits, 38 home runs, 103 RBIs and 111 runs scored... this was his fourth season with the Stallions. Monday, October 14, 2058 RECORD-SETTING RINEHART, TIMMS WIN IPA GOLD ARMS The Islandian Pro Alliance proclaimed the best pitchers in the Ruthlandian and Tycobbian Unions... this year's Golden Arm awards went to the record-setting Lonny Rinehart of the Volusia Vigilantes and Ian Timms of the Tuckanarra Blue Jays... Rinehart, a first-time Golden Arm honoree, rang up a remarkable 31 victories and broke the old standard set in 2046 by Jamie Taylor of the Rocky Rapids Snappers, while Timms captured his second straight Golden Arm. It was an unforgettable season for 25-year-old Lonny Rinehart, the Ruthlandian Union Golden Arm Award winner... not only did Rinehart set a new IPA mark with 31 victories, he also led Volusia to its first pennant in 16 years... a 4-year veteran Rinehart was a brilliant 31-6 with a 1.96 ERA and 9 shutouts in 39 starts, topping the IPA in all three categories... Rinehart completed 23 of his starting assignments and he toppled Jamie Taylor's 30 wins in the '46 season... career-wise Rinehart is 85-54 with an excellent 2.86 ERA. Rinehart dominated the Golden Arm voting this year... Merle Pitts of the Crystal Lake Skippers and George Medworth of the Wynnamac Sundowners finished a distant second and third in the poll... Pitts paced the Skippers to the RU South division title with a 23-6 mark and a fine 2.35 ERA... Pitts gave the Skips a quality start 90% of the time... Medworth went 22-13 for the Macs with 18 complete games and 4 shutouts, while compiling an impressive 2.49 ERA. For the second straight year the Tycobbian Union Golden Arm Award was given to Tuckanarra right-hander Ian Timms... in spite of playing for a 6th-place team (78-76), Timms posted a 22-12 record, along with a sparkling 2.49 ERA... a 5-year veteran at the young age of just 22, Timms led the IPA with 240 Ks in 305 innings... he worked 16 complete games and had 5 shutouts, the second-best total in the IPA and the best in the Tycobbian Union... lifetime Timms is 75-48 with the Blue Jays and a strong 2.94 ERA. Second in the TU Golden Arm race was South Fork's workhorse Emmett Coogan, who notched a standout 25-10 record for the fourth place Stallions (82-72) in the tough Tycobbian East Division... Coogan, a 25-year-old right-hander, had a 3.27 ERA with 12 complete games and 183 strikeouts in 302 innings... he wound up second to Rinehart's 31 victories... Fairfax rookie Ronnie Custer piled up a 22-10 mark for the Frogs, who lost the pennant to Luxora in the TU North by just one game... the 25-year-old Custer logged a fine 2.45 ERA with 11 complete games. Tuesday, October 15, 2058 VIPS' GILBRIDE, CANES' FISKE TOP ROOKS This year's IPA rookies performed well as a group and there was an abundance of them scattered around the Islands... this year's top rookies put up excellent numbers and made 2058 a bumper season... Valmara center fielder Jud Gilbride had a tremendous freshmen season and captured the Ruthlandian Union Rookie of the Year trophy... while the Tycobbian Union Rookie of the Year Award went to Cape Coral third baseman Barney Fiske. Gilbride batted .285 for the year, played in 143 games and led the Vipers to the Ruthlandian North pennant, chalking up the second-best record in the IPA with 98 victories, topped only by Volusia with 105 wins... the 20-year-old outfielder socked 177 hits with 28 doubles, 13 triples, 33 homers, 96 RBIs and 127 runs... Gilbride also swiped 32 bases... he led the IPA in runs scored. Wynnamac's fine 21-year-old right-hander Kuparr Bunji was a very close second in the RU top rookie balloting... he sparked the Sundowners to the Ruthlandian East title with a strong 21-11 record with a 3.19 ERA... Bunji fired 2 shutouts, hurled 20 complete games and fanned 212 batters in 302 innings pitched. Third in the voting was 22-year-old second baseman Marcos Aguilar of the Fort Benton Defenders... he had a strong year, too, with a .324 BA in 144 games, 37 doubles, 4 triples, 7 home runs, 66 ribbies and 91 runs scored... but Fort Benton only managed a 5th place finish this year. Cape Coral's 19-year-old third sacker Barney Fiske was named the Tycobbian top rookie, winding up with a .335 BA in 150 games with 28 doubles, 3 triples, 14 roundtrippers, 68 RBIs and 115 runs... the Hurricanes came in third in the TU South Division... Barney's grandfather was Chip Fiske, a fine outfielder for Crystal Lake from 2013 to 2018... he only played five and a half seasons, but hit a sizzling .344 in his career, shortened by a career-ending arm injury... the elder Fiske won the batting title in 2017 with a .379 average in his last full year. The Fairfax Frogs hit paydirt twice this season with the two of the top three rookies in the Tycobbian Union... selected second was 22-year-old southpaw Ronnie Custer, who had a superb freshman season with a 22-10 mark and a 2.45 ERA... Custer finished up the year with 154 Ks in 279 innings and had 11 complete games. Winding up third was another Frog, left fielder Ron Travis... in 131 games the 23-year-old Travis posted a .330 BA with 26 two-baggers, 3 triples, 23 homers, 92 RBIs and 87 runs scored... the two splendid freshmen helped Fairfax rise up to second place in the Tycobbian North race... the Frogs lost the pennant to Luxora by a single game. |

Wednesday, October 16, 2058 IPA GOLD GLOVES GIVEN OUT The top defenders in the Islandian Pro Alliance were mainly first-time winners... there were only four repeat winners, all in the Ruthlandian Union and just two choices... heading up the 2058 Golden Glove Awards was St. John's gifted center fielder Freddie Woodruff, who was named for the fourth time in his career... Middlefield's fine shortstop Stan Radzikowski and Grand City's talented left fielder Dave Durocher were honored for the third time in their careers... the only other repeat winner was Wynnamac second baseman Phil McLemore, a two-time Golden Glove recipient... both rookie selections also played in the Ruthlandian Union: Ancona pitcher Benny Arledge and Belair Beach right fielder Alfie Elbourne... the oldest Golden Glove defender was 7-year veteran shortstop Jayson Nickell of the Summerland Sunsets, age 33, and rookie right fielder Alfie Elbourne of the Belair Beach Sunbirds was the youngest at age 19... Thursday, October 17, 2058 RINEHART, BLACKFORD IPA 2058 MVPS Even in an ordinary year in the Islandian Pro Alliance, it takes a lot to win the Most Valuable Player Award... that was especially true in 2058... all Lonny Rinehart of the Volusia Vigilantes had to do was set a new record for wins... that 31-victory deed got him the Ruthlandian Union MVP trophy... all Buddy Blackford of the Oxford Red Caps had to do was hit 56 homers and drive in 132 runs... these two standout performances propelled their teams to fine seasons ... Rinehart sparked the V's to their first pennant in the RU West in 16 seasons... and Blackford led the Red Caps to a close third place finish in the hotly-contested TU North... Oxford ended up tied for third place, just 3 games out of first place... both MVPs are first-time winners. The 25-year-old Rinehart beat out two talented position players for the Ruthlandian Union Most Valuable Player Award... Rinehart outpolled Valmara's Timmy Benford, this year's Golden Bat, and Crystal Lake's Mel Brouwer... Blackford had to whipped 4-time Tycobbian MVP Norishige Ito of Midway, who came in second in the balloting... in the third spot was super rookie hurler Ronnie Custer of Fairfax. 2058 was a magnificent year for Lonny Rinehart and his Volusia Vigilantes... his record-breaking 31-6 record paced the V's to their best season ever, 105-49... the Vigilantes easily won the Ruthlandian West pennant... their previous best was 92 wins in the '42 and '43 seasons... Winding up in third place in the Ruthlandian Most Valuable Player poll was Crystal Lake's impressive center fielder, Mel Brouwer, who hit .343, the third-best average in the IPA behind Enos Benham of Wynnamac (.379) and Buddy Lark of Taranto (.345)... Brouwer's totals included 192 hits, 28 doubles, 6 triples, 29 roundtrippers, 94 RBIs, 114 runs and 18 stolen bases... in his second year with the Skippers he participated in 144 contests, made the All-Star team and was a prime force in winning the Ruthlandian South flag. The Tycobbian Union Most Valuable Player Buddy Blackford also outdistanced his challengers with a colossal year... the power-hitting first baseman led the IPA with 56 homers and 132 RBIs, while batting .282 and scoring 115 runs for the Oxford Red Caps... just in his second season in the IPA, the 22-year-old Blackford led his Red Caps to a close third-place finish in the torrid TU North... they were just 3 games out of first place in a hotly-contested pennant race. Blackford's great year cost Midway's Norishige Ito a 6th Golden Bat and a 5th MVP trophy... the 31-year-old superstar outfielder wound up second in both categories this year... Ito led the Wolves to the Tycobbian East pennant with a .334 BA in 148 games with 194 hits, 41 homers, 112 RBIs and 120 runs scored. A distant third in the Tycobbian MVP race was rookie pitcher, 22-year-old Ronnie Custer, one of the main movers in the Fairfax surge from 7th place to 2nd place in the TU North... the Frogs lost the pennant by one game to the Luxora Zorros...
