Memphis star James Wiseman declared ineligible

How did the NCAA jump on this so fast, yet the schools involved w/the adidas scandal have still yet to be dealt with? This goes back to Tark the Shark saying the NCAA got so mad @ Kentucky they put Cleveland St on probation.

A year of his basketball life wasted. He should be in the NBA now getting full time training and coaching instead of wasting his time pretending like he cares about academics.

He can still sign w/a Euro pro team. This is why, as much as I LOVE Tar Heel basketball, if I was a blue chip I would go overseas. College should no longer be the preferred method to get to the NBA. Not until they come to reality. Cut out the rules.

I've never really understood the college to pro sports rules, never really bothered to be honest. What confuses me is using the NFL as an example, how can player A leave college then be told who he plays for. I know they can hold out and such but do they sign a contract when they go to college or leave college that they have to be drafted?

The pro leagues are given monopoly exceptions, which allows them different rules from other American companies. So they are allowed to make their own rules. Another case where the commercial world is allowed to much sway over law.

As nobody ever challenged it apart from saying they'd play baseball, didn't Elway do that? And didn't Eli Manning say he'd sit? And if you sit, do you sit for a year then pick any team or go back in the draft again, sorry if it's a bit OT from the op.

Maybe due to size and scope? The bigger it is, the more lawyers involved, and thus the longer it takes...?

Yeah, you go back into the draft. Which sucks to me. You should be able to go where you want if you sit out a year.

True. But my memory only recalls Kansas & NCSt even being told they are being investigated. I can understand those cases not coming to a conclusion yet. But I don't get their not even getting started after they've had 3 years heads up.

North American professional teams don’t draft the player themselves. They draft the rights to negotiate a contract with that player.

The player does not have to sign, but they also don’t hold a lot of power.
If they go I undrafted then they can negotiate with any team that will meet with them.

The NHL is a bit different, if a player is not drafted they return the next draft until I think they hit age 21. If I am wrong about that age a Canadian can correct me.

I have seen some North Americans he bothered by European football transfers since they consider it to be buying and selling human beings.
But it’s not that. You are offering money to another team for the rights to offer that player a contract.

Memphis played Wiseman anyway after he got a court injunction. Which is the equivalent to giving the NCAA the finger. IDK why you risk the NCAA coming down on you heavy by openly defying them. I wonder if their decision is a reflection of the NCAA allowing players to be compensated for their likeness in the future. Does that decision mean the courts would be more likely to overrule the NCAA because the money was bad yesterday, but will be good tomorrow?

Afaik, only MLB has an actual monopoly exception, based on a ruling from the 1st half of the 20th century. Even that has been worn down by subsequent rulings through the years.

The key factor allowing them the ability to set rules on player movement, salary limits, etc. is that they have a CBA in place with the players. That is why one of the steps the players can take during a work stoppage is to de-certify the union, because with out a union representing the workers, full ant--trust rules come into play.
