#1 OSA Rated 'Can't Miss' Prospect Retires?
I'm not at my comp right now or I'd attach a screenshot, but in my league I had drafted Montes De Oca in the 2nd round. After 1 season he was climbing my prospect rankings, but I moved him in an off-season deal to the Yankees with some other prospects for budding star Greg Bird. Bird has turned into a beast for me so I'm happy with the deal, but I thought I'd check on the prospects I gave up to see how the Yankees fared.
I had seen Montes De Oca in the top 10 of Top Prospects last season, but when I checked this season he was nowhere to be found. I went to his personal page and he just up and retired. I checked his history and there is no injury. It just says something along the lines of: 10/01/2019 - Named #1 prospect by OSA 10/05/2019- Retired Is this a bug? I'd have been super pissed if he was still in my farm system. He was about to be promoted and was universally considered the best prospect in baseball. Why would he retire? And if there is a reason, where can I see what that reason was?

Is he a good golfer? Did a relative need a kidney?

I've seen the relative need a kidney thing before, but I don't recall seeing it for Montes De Oca. I've had it happen once in this universe already for a decent player...I would have remembered if it was for Montes De Oca.
Is there a way I can check for something like this?

if you don't save any injury histories, it may be blank, but if someone well-rated retires early it's either injury or they go play another sport (or possibly other occupations? i don't read the emails very thoroughly, lol).

This is a cool story... if it were a rare occurrence. Just starting a dynasty, so it is something for which to look out.

I have seen prospects retire because they just weren't interested in the game. I'd check their personality traits before drafting -- I think but am not sure that has something to do with their likelihood not just of developing to their full potential but of not retiring at an early age.

Welp, you guys were right. Football?! As a wide receiver?!?! The #1 prospect giving it up to be a late 1st or early 2nd round pick?!
Thank God I traded him lol.

As frustrating as it is if this is "your guy," there is an element of realism caused by the unpredictability. So, I like that OOTP does this sort of thing.

My football expertise is very limited, but isn't 275 pounds a bit heavy for a wide receiver?

Yeah, either he is gonna drop about 40 pounds or he's gonna play tight end.

well, ootp is a euro company eh? they don't know football... real football that is.
Edit: get it while you can, because in a generation or 2 it will either be gone or fundamentally different due to the concussion problems. Last edited by NoOne; 01-13-2017 at 04:06 AM. |

In one of my online leagues I had a very good catcher coming up, coming from our hometown.
We had an average catcher at the ML level in his final contract season and as the kid wasn't fully developed I kept him at AAA (was in his early 20's) to make him the starter in the coming season. Well, when I wanted to move him to the ML-team he was nowhere to be found. Research showed that he retired to become a professional golfer Frustrating, but I guess this could happen in reality, too.

It has happened before in real-life. Hawk Harrelson retired from baseball to be a professional golfer.

Isn't it a bit heavy for a SP?

David Wells says no. Sabathia has touched 300 lbs. I think Jonathan Broxton did too, although he didn't start.

When this happens I typically unretire them - if they are worthwhile.
