What decides Hall of Fame hat?

I've got Gaylord Perry here who I'm devastated to learn after his retirement has chosen a San Francisco Giants hat to wear. Upon his inevitable induction into the Hall of Fame 5 years from now, I'm guessing it will stick.

So what decides what hat a player will wear in retirement?

With my Texas Rangers he had more WAR, more wins, fewer losses, his only Cy Young (at age 40!), his only World Series, his only Gold Glove Awards (4 straight), most of his All-Star appearances, a lower ERA, and a much better ERA+.

With the Giants he had more games played and more innings pitched. That's it. Same number of seasons. Unfortunately injuries slowed down his workload in the last couple of years.

So what decides the hat, is it just most games played? Can I change it somehow?

I believe for the player picture after retirement it is just most games played.

But that being said, I think we may apply a different criteria for the HOF plaque, so I'm not sure it will automatically just give him the Giants hat for the HOF. I'm not entirely certain on that though.

Thanks Lukas.

Disappointed that it's just games played... you could have a case where a starter converts to reliever with another team and plays in 50 games a year, not generating much value compared to before but donning that hat in retirement. Maybe if it's innings/PAs that might make more sense. But probably if it has to be one number, WAR would be best.

I'll find out in 5 seasons if the Hall of Fame plaque will be different than the retirement hat. I didn't know there was any difference between the two. Anyway the retirement hat is more important in a way because I see that screen way more often.

Last question would be if there's any way to manually change the hat for one player in the game files? Or change the criteria? I guess I'm in the bargaining stage of grief right now...

It's a combo of games, innings, I believe WAR factors in too, but as noted, his WAR is pretty close too. You probably just barely lost a coin flip.

Happiness/morale should be factored in

Though, the game almost certainly doesn't record that information

You could go into commish mode, edit, assign him to TEX, update the facegen, freeze picture, then exit commish mode maybe??

On the same topic of retirement and uniform, could i recommend that the Major Leagues trump other leagues for retirement purposes.

Say a player plays only a handful of M.L.B games but plays 15 years in the minors, that they show up retired with the M.L.B team uniform.

I often see players who reached the Majors have a hat from the Atlantic league etc...

I think I'd disagree with the above that a guy with a cup of coffee gets retired in the MLB hat. If he's played a dozen years in the minors that guy is a minor league legend and should be wearing the Crawdads or the Yard Goats or whatever hat.

My solution to this little problem has been to unretire Gaylord Perry for one more season. Hey, he's only 45 years old. We'll see if he ends up in a Texas hat with one more year.

So he doesnt play a dozen years. He has a few more at bats or games or whatever is used as the setting.

15 Games in the Majors but 21 with the Bowie Baysox, he shouldn't have the MLB hat?
