Sign then? Trade

This off season the number 1 free agent in the league was Corey Seager. (after 2020 season). He signed with LAA. During ST I had an extra LHB 1B. So I shopped Joey Gallo, and was offered Seager. I did the deal. But thought this was unusual Has anyone else seen this? The AI trading a newly signed Free Agent during spring training..

I can see why you'd think that would be unusual as it probably hasn't happened much in real life.

The AI just evaluates its decisions on a right-now basis though. It doesn't "remember" that it just signed Seager, it just values Joey Gallo more at the moment.

The AI only does what it's coded to do though, so OOTPD could always code in a reluctance to trade recently signed players. Don't know if this is a worthwhile thing, or very hard to do.

An interesting dynamic is that the free-agent signing AI can conflict with the player evaluation AI. A team can decide.. whoa, I really want that free agent, I'll sign him to a big deal. And then immediately after think, wow.. this contract is a boat-anchor, I wouldn't mind dumping it.

Hard balance to get right.

FWIW, the real life rules prevent newly-signed free agents (and I believe only MAJOR league free agents, as I am certain I have seen recent minor league signees traded) from being traded until June 15th of the ensuing season (example: sign a guy January 2, 2020 and can’t trade him until June 15, 2020.)

It doesn't happen in mlb,but in leagues with salary cap (such as the nba) a sign and trade is a good way to circumvent the salary cap (and often net draft picks in return)
