APBA'ers

Hey peeps,

Are there any old school cup and dice APBA'ers around here? I wouldn't mind a little single game head-to-head action which can be done via AIM, it has a dice roll function. I have the basic baseball game and the master football game. Hit me up with a PM if you are interested.

Thanks,
-j

Ah, I remember the game quite fondly. The feel of the lineup in your hands. The nicknames on the cards. Rolling 11 or 66.

When I played APBA with my friend and the play result was a 42, we would throw our cards on the the baseball diamond to simulate a brawl.

Nice! Yeah, I remember back in the day it took me a good 3 months or so to create my own league/players which can be done in a matter of minutes with OOTP. OOTP is incredible and all but it will never be able to replace the nostalgia I get from APBA.

Totally interested! I just need to dig up my APBA cards. My first set was the '87 season and I think I have some of the '00 season cards around here somewhere, give me some time to locate them and we'll play a game!

I played Statis Pro. Would take months to set up a fictional league, organize the structure, set the rosters, establish reserve rosters, Design logos for the envelopes the cards went in and create a schedule.

Then after another several months of playing and compiling statistics realize that a 20 team league with a full major league schedule was just beyond the reach of paper and dice. I repeated this process too many times in my youth to remember. I did make it through the All-Star game once though when I decided to use that quick sim stable mate game that Avalon Hill came out with (can't recall the name, maybe Penant Chase?)

Ah the mis-spent days of youth.

When I was young (before I had discovered American sports) I made some cricket, boxing and rugby league simulation games using cards and dice. I remember having exercise books filled with page after page of scorecards and schedules. Those were the days.

In my mid-teens when my love for American football started I made an NFL game that was purely dice driven, using the 10-sided percentile dices from RPGs. It didn't have any player names in it as it was based on overall team strengths.

I assigned each team ratings for defense, offense and special teams and when matched up against each other they would produce a percentage table I'd role against to determine the result and length of each dirve (in blocks of 15 seconds), aswell as punt returns, kickoffs and if turnovers resulted in touchdowns.

I think I had a 24-team league and I managed to get twelve weeks into one season before losing interest in it.

Great memories.

I have been trying to come up with a system for American football for a while. I have something that kind of works, but I'm not sure I can be bothered to create all the cards and stuff needed to properly test it lol. I think I'll use random.org instead of dice though.
