FINAL 1902 WELTERWEIGHT

Total fighters (club) = 14 (1) note club fighter matty matthews is one win away from rejoining the circuit.

CH - Tommy Ryan 13-0(8)
1. Dixie Kid 6-3-3(2)
2. Rube Ferns 7-4(3)
3. Paddy Duffy 4-5-3
4. Joe Walcott 5-4-3
5. Jimmy Gardner 4-4-2
6. Matty Matthews 6-7

Not a lot of excitement in the Welterweight division, notice the lack of knockouts and the plethora of draws.

GANS RETAINS LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

Joe Gans defended his title with a 15UD over Jem Carney on 12-27, 1902. Gans used his superior defense and quickness to dominate the fight throughout.

Gans dropped Carney with a 3 punch combination in the 13th, and appeared on his way to a rare knockout in the 14th, when a cut under his left eye put him into defensive mode and he stayed outside the rest of the fight.

Gans ran his record to 10-1-1 and Carney fell to 7-4.

I had it 146-138. Tom Trunzo at ringside had it 146-137. The official judges had it 145-139/143-140/146-137.

On the undercard Edward Rollins (5-8) knocked out Denny Kelliher (3-6-2) in :32 into the fight. This marked the second time a fast KO happened on the undercard of a Gans championship bout.

I notice you have Bob Fitzsimmons as a MW. How did you rate him at that? I know the game only has him as a LHW or HW. Thanks.

Not quite sure .... I keep whichever rating is at the lowest weight ... like Roy Jones for example I deleted everything but his middleweight rating. So as far as Fitz goes I must of had a rating from somewhere of him as a Middle. If you want me to I will post it ....

A WALK IN THE PARK WITH FITZ

Bob Fitzsimmons (12-0) defended his LBA middleweight crown for the 3rd time on 1-21-03 with an 8th round TKO of Billy Baker (5-6-2).

A very lopsided fight as it seemed Baker was content to run and clinch just to survive. Fitz had his way throughout the bout.

A cut over the right eye in the 8th gave the referee an excuse to stop the fight.

All 3 judges had it 69-64 at the time of the stoppage

ATTELL RETAINS FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE

Due to typing a detailed description 3 times only to not have it posted I will leave it Attell and Young Corbett fought to a draw and there will be a rematch.

JOHNSON SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

Jack Johnson (12-1) turned in a fairly lackluster performance but managed to retain his title against #4 LBA contender Dominic McCaffrey (5-3-3) on 2-2-1903 in a UD15.

Everyone at ringside thought it was much closer than the judges led us to believe. I had 4 rounds that were too close to call, but I am liberal with the 10-10 round. After McCaffrey ruled the 10th, 11th, and 12th, I had him ahead in the fight. I saw the 13th even and gave the 14th to Johnson. Going into the final round I had it 135-135.

Ringside expert Tom Trunzo had McCaffrey leading 134-133. Johnson came out in the 15th and finally showed some urgency and dropped McCaffrey in the first minute of the round. He almost finished him off before the bell stopped him. Scoring it 10-8, Tom had it 143-142 Johnson.

I had it 145-143 Johnson. The judges ruled heavily in favor of Johnson. In the old adage "you have to beat the champion" the judges ruled it 143-140/147-137/145-138.

*** As a side note I experimented with the judges in this fight. I created a champ one and champ two judge and put their bias toward the champion. I wanted it so you "have to beat the champion". Their second bias fighter with the highest rep for the USA judge and Hometown fighter for the European judge. Ironically the 3rd random judge was the one that scored it 147-137. I liked it enough to use them in the next championship fight. If I start to see it too lopsided maybe I'll try one for each fight instead of two.

mh2365,

You know when you started this game in 1900, what did you do with current active fighters such as the Klitschko's, Chris Byrd, etc? I see that you said that you were going to add fighters every year from 1900, based on their career start date. So what did you do with the heavyweights who are active in 2004? Did you set them to 'retired' until they eventually come into the game in the 1990's?

Also, is there any quick way to find out the career start date of all of the boxers? Surely this takes you a long time!

Thanks. Dave

I would say approx 85% already have the career start date in there ... what I do is while I'm watching my beloved Red Sox on mlb.com I go through my database and get career dates for fighters .... I am done with all the Heavy's through Middle's ... slowly but surely.

To start out I made a new group in my database called 1900. I took every fighter who had a start date pre 1900 or 1900 and added to this group. Each year I add the new fighters to that group and make them active. I left all the current active fighters in the men group and when I get to them I'll retire them and adjust them according to some of the methods posted on the web. I thought about hitting the button in options to retire and adjust all the fighters but I have not done that yet.

When you export your database to HTML report it shows their start date on the first page in a list so it's easy to scroll down the list and see who's start dates are missing. Hope my rambling here helped. It takes me about 2-3 weeks to complete each year in my universe. I'm getting quite a few fighters now so it'll slow down until fighters start retiring.

JOHN L. SULLIVAN SUFFERS FIRST LOSS

In a battle of two undefeated fighters. Philadelphia Jack O' Brien stepped up in weight class to defeat John L. Sullivan.

Speed against power and speed came out on top this night. O' Brien raced to a UD10. Effective defense and counterpunching controlled the fight for Philadelphia.

Everytime Sullivan landed he hurt O' Brien but he only landed 27% of his punches. Sullivan put Jack down in the 4th round but wasn't able to catch him again the rest of the fight.

I had 97-93. The official judges scored it 96-94/97-94/97-92.

After the fight O' Brien said he needed to win the LBA Lightheavyweight championship before stepping up to the Heavyweight division but it was nice to know he could compete.

O' Brien raises his record to 6-0 and Sullivan drops to 10-1

ROOT WINS 2ND TITLE DEFENSE

Jack Root (13-3) scored an UD15 over George Gardner on 3-15-1903. Root overcame a broken nose in the first round to eek out a decision over a game Gardner.

This was the rubber match between the two as Gardner won a UD10 in May of 1900 and Root won UD10 in July of 1901.

Root continues his rags to riches career with his 12th straight win after starting his career 1-3.

Gardner suffered a cut under his right eye in the 8th and it seemed to affect him over the next 4 rounds.

I had it 146-142 in favor of Root. Tom Trunzo ringside had it 144-143 in favor of Gardner. In my second experiment with bias judges I like the results. Champ 1 scored it 144-143 and Champ 2 really scored in favor of the champ 148-141. The random judge had it 144-143.

I am going to continue using these because I had alot of close rounds in this fight and I firmly believe you have to nearly dominate a champion to take his belt by a decision.

Gardner fell to (5-4-1)
