The Montreal Canadiens- a Fictional Story

Its September 20th, 1982 and we are heading into the 3rd season of the newly formed National Hockey League. I am looking forward to a bounce back season, but fully understand that after winning the Holy Grail "Lord Stanley's Cup" in the NHLs first season, that no matter what happened in 1981-82 it was going to be a bitter disappointment. Well to add insult to injury we didnt even make it to the playoffs in year 2 but like any proud GM/Coach, we can blame that squarely on injuries.

The 1980-81 season, I seemed to have the Midas Touch, trade for a scoring defenseman, got 12 points from him in 21 playoff games. Needed an upgrade in goal, got one with a 1.62 GAA and .934 Save % in 21 playoffs games. Needed a shut down 2nd/3rd line center got one that contributed 7 goals and 16 points in 21 playoff games with a +8 rating. Turned a 45-28-9 season for 99 points into a Stanley Cup.

The 1981-82 season was a complete different story. My stud C dropped from a 99 point season and an Art Ross trophy to a 30 goal 69 point season. My shut down 2nd/3rd line C was on fire offensively until he broke his arm in February and was lost for the remainder of the season. My scoring D was limited to 42 games after he went to the I/R for a fractured hand and later a dislocated jaw. My new goalie struggled through most of his 68 games and finished with a 2.60 GAA and a less then stellar .897 Save %. The then when I did pull off a trade for a 29 year old 1st/2nd line winger at the deadline to shore up my top 6 forwards, he breaks his elbow in early March and misses the rest of the season. The Habs were in a playoff position at that point, but it was all down hill from there and we settled for a 38-35-9 season good for 85 points and a 7th place finish in the Atlantic. The arch rival and mostly disliked Boston Bruins went onto to a 59-18-5 season good for 123 points and eventually won their 1st Stanley Cup.

We are heading into a new season, there is new hope, we are healthy and we are expecting to bounce back and make it to the dance again. (Although the Hockey News does not expect us to be a contender this season).

Before we go any further, let me introduce you to my team..........

G Mike Blackshear. The 28 year old goalie was the goalie that stood on his head to help us win a Cup in the 1980-81 season, My scouting staff still thinks he can be a decent goalie, but maybe the Cup run heroics were simply pure luck. We got Mike in a trade with the Minnesota Wild for G Vladimir Lysek. Lysek is currently a free agent after the 33 year old posted 21 wins for the Wild last year. Blackshear born in Texas, has 61 wins to his credit in 2 seasons, with a career 2.67 GAA and .902 Save %. He is signed until 1983-84.

G Steve Burris. Burris is strickly a back-up goalie while our #1 pick in 1981 draft gets ready in the AHL. Burris who will turn 31 in February has played in 29 NHL games over the first 2 seasons recording 12 wins with a 2.67 GAA and .899 Save %. He was an original pick by Montreal when the league was formed. Last season he back-stopped Blackshear in 17 games with a 2.45 GAA.

D Clint Arrington. Arrington is considered a defensive defenseman and the 33 year old can play on either side. An ironman, Arrington has played in all of the Canadiens 164 games the past 2 seasons. He had 5 goals and 15 points last season with just 22 PIMs. Another one of the original Habs, he is signed until the end of this season.

D Yegor Berestnev. The 27 year old Russian born defenseman was added by the Habs in the 80-81 season to improve the offense from the back-end and provide a PP Quarterback. Berestnev was acquired in a November 1980 trade with the Flames that saw us sent David Mlynar and a 4th round pick to Calgary. The 38 year old Mlynar is still a Flame and put up 47 points with Calgary including 17 goals last year. Over the past 2 years, Berestnev has played in 123 of 164 games and has 20 goals and 104 points. He is signed until the 85-86 season.

D Marc-Andre Berube. The Home grown 32 year old is a defensive defenseman. An original Canadien when the league was formed has played in 136 games and has 9 goals and 42 points over the past 2 seasons. Berube is an assistant captain and is in his final year of his contract.

D Marek Bartolcic. Bartolcic is a Slovakian born defensive defenseman. At age 20, Bartolcic was selected by Montreal in the 1981 draft as the 203rd overall pick. When his OHL team, the Oshawa Generals never signed him to come back for his final year in Junior, Montreal signed him and assigned him to the AHL St Johns Ice Caps. After only 6 games in the AHL he had 10 points and was a +6 and was promoted to Montreal due to a injury. In 35 games with Montreal, he has 1 goal and 10 points and was a +2. He platooned as a 6th defenseman for Montreal last season and is expected to do so again this year. Bartolcic is signed until the 83-84 season.

D Matej Ouhrabka. Touted as Montreal's top prospect when he was an original pick when the league formed, the 24 year old is still going through some growing pains but wears the 2nd "A" on his jersey. The Czech is being used primarily with his partner Berestnev on the 1st pairing for Montreal and that resulted in some good offensive numbers for the defensive defenseman. Matej put up 12 goals and 47 points with a +4 rating in 82 games last year. He will become a restricted free agent at the end of this season.

D Martic Sulc. The 28 year old is another Czech defenseman for Montreal. Another defensive defenseman, he usually plays on the 2nd pairing for Montreal. Sulc missed most of the 80-81 campaign when he was afflicted with an MRSA infection in October of that season. He came back just in time to play in 4 playoff games. Sulc played in 80 games last year where he had 10 goals and 29 points. Sulc, an original Hab, is signed until the 83-84 season.

D Nathan Vallee. The 2nd part of the platoon on the 3rd pairing, this defensive defenceman has been splitting time between the NHL and AHL. Over the past 2 years, Vallee has played 69 games in the NHL and sports 14 points including 4 goals. Born in Quebec City, QC the 5'11" 28 year old is a UFA at the end of this season.

LW Lorenzo Bocci. The 28 year old Bocci is playing on the 1st line for Montreal but his 2-way game allows him to play PK, PP and often matched against the oppositions top line. Signed until the end of the 1984-85 season, Bocci has 51 goals and 105 points in 144 games over the past 2 years. To go along with the offense is 253 PIMs and obviously the odd dust-up.

LW Tom Gaskell. The 30 year old was acquired by Montreal in the off-season as a Free Agent. Gaskell played the previous 2 seasons with the Canucks putting up modest offensive numbers that included 15 goals and 77 points. The Canadiens signed Gaskell until the 84-85 season. Gaskell is expected to play on the 3rd line.

LW Al Ladd. The Canadiens acquired the 30 year old Ladd last year in a deadline deal to improve its top 6 group. Montreal sent 20 year old Chris Wharram to Chicago, a blue chip prospect to get Ladd. Ladd put up 15 points including 7 goals for Montreal in 19 games after the trade before injury ended his season in March. Despite being limited to 73 games, Ladd had 24 goals and 70 points with a +24 rating. Ladd is signed until the 84-85 season. Although normally a LW, Ladd will start the season as a RW on the 1st line.

LW Dave Lyon. The 19 year old Lyon was signed as a Free agent in the off-season by Montreal. Lyon was the Wilds 1981 95th overall pick in the draft but chose not to resign him after playing in 41 games. Lyon is expected to be a offensive forward had 51 points in his final year in the QMJHL for the Sea Dogs. In 41 NHL games, he has 2 goals and 6 points. Montreal signed Lyon until the 84-85 season. Lyon is expected to platoon on the 4th line.

LW Batsaikhany Vanoosten. The 29 year old American was born in Burbank IL. An original pick of the Canadiens, he has not missed a game in 2 seasons recording 225 goals and 88 points playing mostly on the 2nd line. Again, expected to play on the 2nd line this year, Vanoosten is a very good playmaker. He is signed until the 83-84 season.

C Matthew Amadio. The 35 year old Amadio is expected to platoon on the 4th line where he has spent most of his past 2 seasons for Montreal. Over the past 2 years, Amadio has played in 88 games and has 7 goals and 13 points. Likely in his final season with Montreal,.he will become a UFA at the end of this season.

C Chris Hughes. The 32 year old "Captain" is one of the best 2 way forwards in the game. He has won the Frank J Selke trophy for best defensive forward in both the 80-81 and 81-82 seasons, won the Art Ross trophy with his 99 points in the 80-81 season and is a 2-time All-Star. After recording 29 goals and 99 points in his 1st season, he fell to 30 goals and 69 points last season. In playing in all 164 games the past 2 years, Hughes has a +47 rating. Hughes plays on the 1st line which can also line up against the oppositions top unit. Hughes is signed until the end of the 85-86 season.

C Jim Rutgers. The 28 year old Rutgers was acquired as a Free Agent on July 3rd of 1981 after playing a season with the St Louis Blues. Last season Rutgers played mostly on the 4th line and had 2 goals in 48 games. In 101 NHL games he has 9 goals and 17 points with 44 PIMs. He is expected to platoon on the 4th line this season and is signed until the end of this season.

C Melvin Swiney. The 33 year old Swiney is a depth two-way forward for Montreal. The Canadiens got him via the waiver wire on March 4th. 1982 when it appeared they needed to add depth after an injury to Al Ladd. Swiney had played 142 games with the Panthers prior to getting waived and now has 37 goals and 66 points with 83 PIMs and a +22 rating in 147 NHL games. Swiney is going to start the season on the 3rd line for Montreal. He will become a UFA at the end of this season.

C Dave Wright. The 27 year old Wright was the added piece that Montreal needed for its Stanley Cup run in the 80-81 season. Wright was acquired in a trade that sent LW Bill Davies and a 3rd rounder to Philadelphia. Davies, currently a Free agent, had 18 goals and 41 points as a 35 year old for Montreal before the trade. Wright was limited to 68 games last year due to a season ending injury in February, he had 25 goals and 53 points before going down for the year. Wright has 146 NHL games under his belt, he has 44 goals and 101 points and is no wall-flower... he has 141 career PIMs. Wright is excepted to center the 2nd line and is signed until the 84-85 season.

RW Deric Dufour. The 28 year old Dufour was signed in the off-season as a Free agent. Dufour played the last 2 seasons as a regular for the Columbus Blue Jackets. In those 2 years, he had 14 goals and 39 points with 216 PIMs in 156 games. Considered a two-way forward, Dufour is expected to play in a platoon situation on the 4th line. Dufour is signed until the 84-85 season.

RW Rob Lynch. The 28 year old Lynch was a Free Agent signing on July 4th, 1981 after playing 82 games in 80-81 for the Blackhawks. Lynch played in 65 games last year for Montreal, mostly on the 4th line where he is expected to play again this year. In 147 career NHL games he has 14 goals and 34 points. Montreal signed him to a 2 year deal so he becomes a UFA at the end of this season.

RW Ronnie Marvin. The 27 year old Marvin was an original pick of the Canadiens when the league was formed. In the first two seasons with Montreal he has 18 goals and 49 points in 144 NHL games. He is a two-way player with a physical game as his 102 PIMs attest to, but has only had 2 career NHL fights. Marvin has played mostly on the 2nd and 3rd lines for Montreal, he is expected to start on the 3rd line this season. He will be a UFA at the end of this season.

RW Yevgeny Ronov. The 20 year old Ronov was signed as a Free agent in the off-season. Ronov was never drafted which was a surprize when you consider he was a playoff MVP in the 1980-81 WHL playoffs. He did sign a 1 year deal with the Sabres after that but was tossed back and forth between the NHL and AHL for Buffalo. He did put up 56 points in his final year of Junior with the Seattle Thunderbirds. Last year he had 4 goals and 13 points in 45 games for the Sabres. Montreal signed him until 84-85. The speedy Russian is expected to start on the Habs 2nd line this season.

The Blue Jackets have made the playoffs in both the NHL seasons so far putting up 100 and 95 points in those 2 seasons. Columbus is led by 27 year old C Samuel Chabot. Chabot has 49 career goals and 139 points in his 159 games over the past 2 years. He is usually on a first line that includes 23 year old Peter Peterson who has 50 career goals in 160 career NHL games. G Chris Neal will start for Columbus, he is 75-43-9 with a career 2.30 GAA and .916 save % in 124 games. Montreal will send Mike Blackshear between the pipes to start the game.

The Canadien's got a SH goal from LW Lorenzo Bocci mid way through the 3rd period to beat the Blue Jackets to start the season. D Matej Ouhrabka added 3 assists in the victory. Columbus out shot Montreal 12 to 4 in the 3rd period to put the pressure on the Habs, but it was the Blue Jackets 0-5 PP that hurt them as they allowed the SH game winner. Montreal's C Chris Hughes was named the 1st star with his 1st goal of the season.

Chris Hughes finally put the Habs on the board on their 30th shot 6 minutes into the 3rd, but it was not enough as the Habs out shot the Canes 34-22 but David Rice held them at bay. He was the 40th overall pick in the 1981 draft by Colorado. His current mentor on the blue line is 30 year old RD Felix-Antoine Chaput. Chaput has 1 assist so far this season but is coming off back to back 16 goal seasons from the blue line. He had 61 points in the 80-81 season as well.

Montreal controlled the 2nd period outshooting Tampa 16-9, but the Lightning got the only goal. Montreal did get on the board early in the 3rd, Melvin Swiney with his 1st of the year at 0:45 mark. Montreal continued to control the play but Tampa scored on their 2nd shot of the period after over 12 minutes of play in the 3rd, 4-1. The Habs never really got back into the game after that.

Montreal Canadiens at Boston Bruins

We now go into Boston to face the defending Stanley Cup Champs. Boston have a embarassment of talent on defense, but RD Gerald Lowe maybe the best of the them. The 32 year old Rowe has a goal and 4 points in 4 games for the Bruins. He eats up about 24-25 minutes a game and is coming off a 16 goal, 63 point season that saw him rate a +31. LD Tom Grimes plays more a defensive game, but can contribute offensively as well. The 29 year old Grimes has 20 goals and 93 points along with 187 PIMs in 168 NHL games since 80-81, all for the Bruins. RW Mike McDaniel already has 3 goals and 5 points this season in 4 games, he had 29 goals and 71 points last season with 214 PIMs and a incredible +46 rating. The 33 year old does not play timid as he has 507 career PIMs since the 80-81 season including 62 fights.

The Bruins are 2-2-0 while the Habs are 2-3-0 and because of back to back games, G Steve Burris will start for Montreal in his 2nd start, he has a .875 save %.

Boston scores on their 1st shot of the night 90 seconds into the game for a early 1-0 lead. Burris held the Bruins at bay for the remainder of the 1st as the Bruins outshot Montreal 14-4 in the period.

There is no scoring in the 2nd period and the Bruins continue to control the play now out shooting Montreal 24-6. Both teams are 0 for 3 on the PP.

The 3rd period was much the same, Boston out shot 16-6 in the period and Montreal could not even get Burris out of the net for an extra attacker late in the game as Boston controlled the puck.

Boston's C Danny Clair was named the 1st star, he had the only goal and now has 2 on the season in 5 games. The 19 year old Clair did have 6 goals and 27 points in his rookie NHL season last year. Clair was the 89th overall pick in the 1981 draft by the Bruins.

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators

Montreal's road trip continues but we are getting closer to home. Things don't get any easier as they will have to find a way to shut down 35 year old C Greg Mortlock. Mortlock already has 4 goals in 5 games after scoring 35 last year to go along with his 37 assists. Mortlock has 82 career NHL goals in 169 games so far. The have a strong veteran presence on the back end with RD Lucas Sexton. The 31 year old Sexton has only 1 assist this season, but he is the definitive defensive defenseman, with 44 points in 139 career games. LD Steve Pethick is a game time decision for Ottawa. The 33 year old Pethick is day to day with whiplash and has played through the injury so far with 5 games, getting 4 assists. He played 65 games last year and had 7 goals and 40 points.

Ottawa comes into the game with a 3-2-0 record while Montreal stumbles out of the block with a 2-4-0 record. G Mike Blackshear sporting a .909 save % will start for Montreal while G Tony Linnell will go for Ottawa, he has a .930 save %. RW Yevgeny Ronov is still not in the line-up.

Mid-way through the 1st, Ottawa strikes first. Montreal is out shooting the Sens 7-4 but trail 1-0. The 1st ends 1-0 for Ottawa with the shots favouring Montreal 11-8.

Montreal does get on the board early in the 2nd, RD Matej Ouhrabka pots his 1st of the year to tie the game. The Sens get the lead back when Greg Mortlock scores for the 5th time this year just past 5 minutes into the period. With just over 4 minutes left in the 2nd, Ottawa strikes again and it is 3-1 for the Sens. Montreal responds quickly though, LW Lorenzo Bocci bags his 5th of the year and its 3-2 about a minute later. The period ends 3-2 for the Sens.

Montreal continues to play well and are outshooting Ottawa 15-6 in the 3rd period and finally get a break, a PP with 1:10 left in the game. Unfortunately Montreal's Tom Gaskell takes a tripping minor with 0:39 left to even it out. Montreal does get their goalie out for an extra attacker and get a face off in the Sens end with 0:15 left. Montreal's Dave Wright wins the draw, but the Habs don't get a shot before Ottawa clears the zone, another loss.

The Sens C Greg Mortlock is selected the 1st star with his goal and the Habs effort was there, but no result.

Los Angeles Kings at Montreal Canadiens

Well hopefully home cooking and the friendly confines of the Bell Center will help the Canadiens get back on the winning track against the 3-2-1 Kings. The Kings have a rock in the net, 30 year old Harrison Wylie is 2-2-1 with a 3.76 GAA and .903 save %, but this is most likely simply a slow start as he is coming off a 34-22-7 season with a 2.40 GAA and .918 save %. C Brit Sedgwick has a goal and 2 points so far in 6 games, but he has been a solid performer for the Kings over the last past 2 seasons and has 61 goals and 136 points to his resume over 165 games. 32 year old LW Paul Alston rounds out the stars for the Kings, he has 4 goals and 6 points already in 6 games and had 20 goals and 38 assists last year in 79 games.

For Montreal, Yevgeny Ronov will draw back into the line-up on the 2nd line while G Mike Blackshear will start in goal with his .905 save %. The Kings confirmed G Harrison Wylie will start.

Montreal 4 Los Angeles 2

With the Habs in control out shooting Los Angeles 13 to 4, RW Ronnie Marvin had to leave the game with wrist soreness and just over 2 minutes remaining in the 1st period. The period ended with the Habs out shooting the Kings 14 to 6, but tied 0-0.

Just over a minute into the 2nd, Kings star C Brit Sedgwick breaks the goose-egg and a 1-0 lead. Montreal ties it up with about 9 minutes left in the period, C Dave Wright gets his 2nd. The Kings take the lead with 3;37 left in the 2nd, 2-1. The period ends with the Habs trailing 2-1 despite out shooting LA 28 to 10.

Montreal ties it up again at the 4:09 mark of the 3rd, Chris Hughes with his 4th. Hughes gets his 2nd of the night at 5:23 of the period, Montreal with the lead 3-2. RW Al Ladd finally finds the score sheet with just over 2 minutes left in the game as he gets his 1st of the year. Montreal hangs onto a important 4-2 win.

Montreal's C Chris Hughes is named the games 1st star. Hughes had 2 goals and an assist and improved to 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points.

New Jersey Devils at Montreal Canadiens

It was nice to get a win under our belts and maybe turn the tide on the season. It would be really nice to start lighting up the lamp and not have to rely on goaltending to win a game. Currently we stand 26th overall in the league with 2.00 GF per game. We are usually in the top 10 in this area the past few seasons. We are ranked 9th with a 2.25 GAA so we have been keeping it close.

The New Jersey Devils come into the game with a 4-2-0 record good for 2nd in the Metropolitan. Some key players for the Devils and it starts with 32 year old RD Travis Malcolm. His numbers so far this season are not staggering with just 2 assists in 6 games, but defensive defenseman put up 8 goals and 44 points last year and can be a physical presence with his 102 PIMs. He has 89 career points in 153 games but his game is defense. RW Horst Navrkal he going to be around the net and has 3 goals and 5 points in 6 games. The 31 year old had his best season last year when he tallied 37 times and had 62 points. His vision makes him a great playmaker. LD Lukas Sury has a balance of offense and defense. The 32 year old Czech has just 2 assists to his name this year, but he put up 33 points last year including 11 goals in 72 games split between the Devils and the Senators before being traded. A solid playmaking defenseman.

Montreal will be without Ronnie Marvin on the 3rd line, RW Deric Dufour will take his place tonight. Dufour is still looking for his 1st point this year. Blackshear will go for the Habs, he has a .903 save % this year while the Devils will have Jeremy Hollowell in net. He has a .904 save % in 4 games.

Montreal 4 New Jersey 1

It was all New Jersey to start the game, Montreal never recorded a shot until nearly 9 minutes into the game. The 1st period remained scoreless and the Devils outshot the Habs 13 to 5. New Jersey was 0 for 3 on the PP, Montreal 0 for 2.

Montreal opens the scoring at the 11:55 mark of the 2nd, RW Al Ladd gets his 2nd of the season and the Habs are up 1-0. Montreal makes it 2-0 on Dave Wright's 3rd of the year just past the 13 minute mark. The Canadiens keep the pressure on and momentum and add a 3rd goal, LW Lorenzo Bocci with his 6th at 16:58. At the end of 2, Montreal leads 3-0.

New Jersey seems to gain the momentum back in the 3rd but LW Tom Gaskell breaks their hearts with his 1st of the season just before the mid point of the period. The Devils do break Blackshear's shut out bid with just under 8 minutes left in the game. Its now 4-1. Montreal hangs on to win.

Montreal's RW Al Ladd is named the 1st star, he had a goal and an assist and now has 2 goals and 8 points on the season.

Montreal Canadiens at Florida Panthers.

Back to back wins and a couple more goals then just 2 and suddenly the team looks alot better then it did a week or so ago. Montreal now have 4 players with more then 1 goal, but have only 8 guys that have scored a goal this season in 9 games.

Florida has a few key players to keep an eye on. RW Martin Babirad is a 2 way player who was named an NHL All-star last year. He has 1 goal and 3 points in 8 games this year, but had 31 goals and 74 points last year. Florida signed the 30 year to a 7 year $10.0 per deal last season. C Luke Tuin brings some youth to the line up. Tuin is only 20 years of age and is already a pretty good offensive threat while playing at both ends of the rink. He has 2 goals and 5 points this season, but had 18 goals and 56 points in his rookie season last year while maintaining a +11 rating. He had 85 points in his final season in the QMJHL in the 80-81 year. RD Zak Swain continues to be a useful player even at 39 years of age. Swain did put up 60 points in the 80-81 season for the Panthers, but injury limited him to just 47 games last year. He will become a UFA at the end of this season.

Montreal will still be without Ronnie Marvin today, RW Rob Lynch will play on the 3rd line in his place. Lynch has 1 assist so far this season in 9 games. Montreal will go with Mike Blackshear in net, he now has a .914 save % while the 3-4-1 Devils will have Rob Wolf between the pipes and his .909 save %.

Florida 5 Montreal 1

Florida only needed 2:36 and 2 shots to take an early 1-0 lead when veteran RD Zak Swain scored. They scored on their next shot as well just 5 minutes into the game to make it 2-0. Zak Swain got his 3rd of the season just past the 12 minute mark and it is 3-0 on just 7 shots by Florida. Montreal does get a goal with just under 5 minutes remaining in the period, Dave Lyon with his 1st of the year as the 4th line strikes for the Canadiens. The period ends with the Panthers leading 3-1 despite getting outshot by Montreal 10 to 7.

There was no scoring in the 2nd period, but the Panthers did out shoot Montreal 11 to 8. So far both teams are 0 for 2 on the PP.

Florida adds another with just under 6 minutes into the 3rd, RD Zak Swain on queue completes the hattie with his 3rd of the game and 4th of year. The Panthers make it 5-0 near the mid point of the period. Well so much for a little momentum gained the last few games as well get spanked in Florida 5-1.

Panthers RD Zak Swain of course was named the 1st star with his 3 goals. He now has 4 goals and 5 points in 9 games this year.

Chicago Blackhawks at Montreal Canadiens

Its still early in the season, but the Habs need to get some wins in the Win column so not to fall too far behind the pack. Montreal is 4-1 at home but a woeful 0-5 on the road. The good news is that we are at home tonight.

The Hawks may have the premier Offensive player in the league in one C Andrew MacWhirr. MacWhirr is 27 and is in his prime. So far this season he has 4 goals and 8 points with a +7 rating in 7 games. Last year he had 39 goals and 89 points in winning the Art Ross Trophy. The 2-time All-Star has 86 career goals and 180 career points which makes him the NHL career leader in both categories after 2 + seasons. RW Pyotr Yermolayev brings a 2-way game to the Hawks, this season the Russian born 32 year old has 1 goal and 2 points in just 5 games. He has been a surprize healthy scratch in a few games. Last season he played in all 82 and had 12 goals and 32 points. RW Luke Blanleil usually plays with MacWhirr and brings a defensive presence on the 1st line. So far this season the 29 year old has 3 goals and 7 points in 7 games with a +5 rating. Last year he had 25 goals and 66 points with a +26 rating.

Montreal will still be without RW Ronnie Marvin in the line-up to face the 4-1-2 Blackhawks. Montreal will have Mike Blackshear in goal, he has a .899 save % while Chicago goes with John Methven and his .914 save %.

Montreal 3 Chicago 2

The first period ends scoreless with Montreal outshooting Chicago 9 to 4. Both teams were 0 for 1 on the PP.

Chris Hughes finally broke the scoreless tie with a goal on the PP at 7:52 with his 6th of the year. Montreal scored to make it 2-0 just over a minute later when D Clint Arrington got his 1st of the season. The Habs outshot the Hawks 8 to 5 in the 2nd.

David Wright scores his 4th of the season on the PP at 13:37 of the 3rd. Montreal has held Chicago to just 9 shots so far. The Hawks break Blackshear's shut out on their 10th shot with just under 5 minutes to go. Chicago makes it interesting with Andrew MacWhirr's 5th on the season on the PP with just 56 ticks on the clock left. The Hawks finish the game with pressure in the Montreal net for the remaining time on the clock, but can't get a 3rd by Mike Blackshear.

Canadiens C Chris Hughes is named the games 1st Star, he had 1 goal and 1 assist and now has 6 goals and 10 points.

Montreal Canadiens (5-6-0) at Ottawa Senators (5-5-0)

Back on the road to the Canadian Tire Center to face the Senators. The Canadiens are trying to gain some momentum into the season and are hoping to get on a streak. Part of the issue has been the unbalanced scoring on the lines.

Bocci 6 Hughes 6 Ladd 2
Vanoosten 0 Wright 4 Ronov 0
Gaskell 1 Swiney 1 Dufour 0
Lyon 1 Rutgers 0 Lynch 0

Beyond the 1st line, we have only 1 player with more then 1 goal. So tonight I will shake up the lines just a little and move the speedy Ronov onto the 1st line while moving Ladd to the second line.

Ottawa comes into the game with a few bumps and bruises as C Greg Mortlock is dealing with a bruised forearm. The 35 year old Mortlock has 5 goals and 3 assists with 20 PIMs so far this season in 10 games. LD Steve Pethick also is dealing some minor injury, he is day to day with whiplash. The 33 year old defensive defenseman has 2 goals and 8 points with a -2 rating in 10 games. Who is healthy is 31 year old Lucas Sexton. The 31 year old now has 3 assists so far this year and is a +3 in 10 games.

Montreal is still missing RW Ronnie Marvin from the lineup. Marvin has missed the last 3 games and is listed day to day with wrist soreness. G Mike Blackshear will go in goal for Montreal, he has a .897 save % in 9 games while Ottawa will start Tony Linnell who has a .923 save % in 9 games.

Montreal 5 Ottawa 3

Ottawa took just 3 minutes to open the scoring on their 1st shot when Charles-Olivier Dupuis pots his 2nd of the year. Sens Rory Bouffard makes it 2-0 with his 2nd at 14:24 on their 2nd shot of the period. Montreal does get one back with just 1:20 remaining, Lorenzo Bocci scores his team leading 7th. Just when Montreal felt they were back into the game, Steve Pethick scores his 3rd of the year with just 20 seconds left in the 1st. 3-1 Sens. The period ends with the Montreal out shooting Ottawa 9 to 6.

Ottawa began to carry the play in the 2nd, but it was Montreal that struck next with Batsaikhany Vanoosten's 1st goal of the year at 13:01 of the period. Montreal ties it up at 3-3 with Rob Lynch's 1st goal of the year at 14:40. The period ends tied with the Habs now outshooting the Sens 21 to 17.

The Habs grab early momentum in the 3rd and get rewarded with Martin Sulc's 1st of the year just 2:26 into the period. Montreal up 4-3. Montreal extends their lead to 5-3 when Melvin Swiney gets his 2nd of the year at 13:37 of the 3rd. Montreal hung onto the lead and the win outshooting Ottawa 18 to 3 in the 3rd.

Montreal's RD Martin Sulc was named the 1st star with his 1 goal, +2 rating in 19:51 in icetime. The 28 year old Sulc now has 1 goal and 2 points with a +6 rating in 12 games.

Buffalo Sabres (8-1-1) at Montreal Canadiens (6-6-0)

Montreal will have to face the best team so far in the East in the Sabres. It will be the first meeting of the season with the Sabres. We experimented with a new look first and second line against the Senators, might as well try it again tonight.

Buffalo are strong between the pipes in G Aleksey Zhavronkov. The 27 year old Russian has yet to lose in regulation this season sporting a 6-0-1 record with a 1.79 GAA and .929 save %. The past two years Zharvonkov has been the back-up in Buffalo, he has 25 career wins in 50 games with a 2.54 GAA and career .903 save %. A star defenseman in this league, 30 year old Gabriel Jalbert plays a defensive role with the Sabres. Not expected to put up offense, he has 3 goals and 4 points this year in 10 games. Last season he had 13 goals and 52 points in 81 games. Another solid defenseman patrols the Sabres end is 38 year old Stephen West. West is another solid defensive defenseman that has a goal and 6 assists in 10 games this season. West had 46 points in 81-82 and 41 points in the 80-81 season.

Montreal is still without RW Ronnie Marvin and will have Mike Blackshear in goal. Blackshear has a .892 save % in 10 games, while the Sabres will start Aleksey Zhavronkov who has a .929 save % in 6 games.

Montreal 6 Buffalo 5 (OT)

Buffalo opens the scoring at 11:09 when Adrian Gore scores his 4th of the year. RW Kent Lunney gets his 2nd of the year at 12:39 to make it 2-0. Montreal does get one back when C Chris Hughes scores his 7th with just 1:53 remaining in the period. The 1st period ends with the Sabres out shooting Montreal 12 to 11.

Sabres go up 3-1 when RD Gabriel Jalbert scores for the 4th time this year at the 4:26 mark. Buffalo's C Joel Pirus gets his 1st of the season at 10:54 to make it 4-1. The Sabres continue to pour it on despite getting out shot, RW Eric Blakeway gets his 3rd of the year at 15:33. Montreal makes it 5-2 with LW Lorenzo Bocci's 8th of the year with 1:49 left in the 2nd. The period ends with Montreal out shooting Buffalo 26 to 23.

Montreal is trying to make it interesting when RD Matej Ouhrabka scores for the 2nd time this year at 9:04 of the 3rd, Montreal trails 5-3. It gets real interesting after LW Lorenzo Bocci scores a PP goal, his 9th of the season at 12:20 to make it 5-4 for Buffalo. Montreal completes the comeback to tie it 5-5 with C Chris Hughes 8th goal of the year with just 1:20 remaining. The game goes into overtime after Montreal out shoots Buffalo 36 to 34.

In improbable fashion, Montreal's LD Clint Arrington scores his 2nd of the year just 24 seconds into overtime for the Montreal win.

Habs LW Lorenzo Bocci was named the 1st star with his 2 goals and 2 assists. The 28 year old Bocci now has 9 goals and 12 points with 16 PIMs and a +5 rating.

Toronto Maple Leafs (6-3-0) at Montreal Canadiens (7-6-0)

We get a visit from the Maple Leafs and all the media attention that follows the center of the universes team. Toronto has made the playoffs the past 2 years while we have only made the dance once. But we still have a "Cup" to brag about. We have won 3 in a row while Toronto is 2-2 in their last four.

Toronto is led by the 1981 Hart winning LD Leslie Barnes. The 35 year old is in his last year of his contact and is playing like he is looking for an extension. He has 1 goal and 7 points in 9 games in the role of a defensive defenseman. In his 3rd season as a Leaf, he has 27 goals and 117 points with a +25 rating in 173 games. On the other side is RD Norris Walker. Walker may not put the points up that Barnes does, but he does have a goal and 3 assist and did have 46 points in 82 games in 80-81. In the 2 + past seasons, the 39 year old has missed only 1 game. RW Ryan Lewis will get the Montreal defense fits most likely. The 28 year old has 9 goals and 14 points in 9 games but is coming off a injury shortened season that held him to 43 points in 51 games. In 80-81 Lewis had 28 goals and 63 points in 73 games, all with the Leafs.

Montreal trainer Domenic Marzouca says RW Ronnie Marvin is still not ready for game action so he will be scratched again. The Leafs will go with Erik Pecinka in net, he holds a .929 save % in 8 games while Montreal starts Mike Blackshear and his .887 save %.

Montreal 4 Toronto 2

Montreal gets the opening goal of the game at the 8:14 mark when LW Lorenzo Bocci gets his 10th of the year with the man-advantage. Montreal makes is 2-0 when C Melvin Swiney collects his 3rd of the year at 10:53. A good period for the Habs as they out shot the Leafs 15 to 7. Despite the territorial advantage by Montreal on CBC's "Coaches Corner" the host's complemented on the play of Leafs LW Jimmy Krueger and about the questionable penalty calls the Leafs were given.

The Leafs get one back when C Michal Snajdr gets his 3rd of the year at 3:06 of the 2nd. Habs still lead 2-1. Despite the goal, Montreal continues to dominate the game out shooting the Leafs 34 to 14 after peppering 19 shots at Erik Pecinka.

The Leafs tie it up at exactly 1:00 into the 3rd, C Tyler Garratt with his 2nd of the year. Montreal does get that one back at 4:30 of the 3rd. C Chris Hughes gets his 9th of the season and the Habs are up 3-2. C Chris Hughes puts it away with his 10th of the year at 18:21 to give Montreal a 2 goal cushion. The final shots on goal in a Canadien's dominated affair are 44 to 16.

Canadiens C Chris Hughes is named the 1st star with his 2 goals and 1 assist. The 32 year old Hughes has 10 goals and 17 points in 14 games this year. The former Art Ross trophy winner looks like he is chasing the trophy again.

Anaheim Ducks (4-7-1) at Montreal Canadiens (8-6-0)

Well like "The Cars" so profoundly sung, "Let the Good Times Roll" as Montreal has won four in row and looking to make it five. The experiment to put Ladd on the 2nd line and Ronov on the 1st may not be making a difference, but why take a chance.

The Ducks are led by 27 year old Nate Elgie. Elgie was the Calder Trophy winner in 1980-81 season after putting up 83 points in 80 games, but a couple of injuries limited him to 55 games and just 39 points last season. So far this season he has played in all 12 games and has 3 goals and 7 points. At RD, the Ducks have 30 year old Daniel Gallagher. Gallagher wont light up the score sheet in his defensive role, but he does have 20 career NHL goals in 129 games. This season he has 2 goals and 7 points and is +1 on a team that is -7 in goal differential. At LD the Ducks have 40 year old Johnny Janosz. Janosz is signed until the 84-85 season and looks like he could be effective for a few more years. Not a huge offense producer, Janosz had 24 career goals and 86 points in 176 career games.

The Habs will welcome RW Ronnie Marvin back into the lineup. He will play the RW on a line with Tom Gaskell and Melvin Swiney. The Ducks will have back-up Bill Gelder in the net, he is sporting a .857 save % in his only game this year. Mike Blackshear gets his 13th start, he has a .886 save %.

Montreal 3 Anaheim 2

Well it had to be a huge relief for Yevgeny Ronov, the former QMJHL scoring star finally gets his 1st as a Hab at 7:32 and gives Montreal a 1-0 lead. The lead was very short as the Ducks replied at 8:26 when Mike Nelson got his 1st of the year. Montreal gets the lead back at 13:01 when another player gets off the goal scoring goose egg, LD Yegor Berestnev gets his 1st of the season. Montreal leads 2-1 but the Ducks are out shooting us 11 to 8.

Midway through the 2nd, Anaheim's RD Daniel Gallagher ties it with his 3rd of the year at 10:41. Montreal outshoots the Ducks 11 to 7 in the period and now have the advantage at 19 to 18 but the game is now tied 2-2.

Montreal gets the lead 3-2 at 7:16 of the 3rd when Tom Gaskell gets his 2nd. Ronnie Marvin gets an assist in his 1st game back after his injury. Montreal holds off the Ducks the rest of the way out shooting them 21 to 5 in the 3rd and 40 to 23 overall.

Canadiens LD Yegor Berestnev was named the 1st star with his goal and assist. The 27 year old now has 1 goal and 13 points this season in 15 games. Since 80-81 including 30 games with the Flames before a trade brought him to Montreal, Berestnev has 21 goals and 115 points in 138 career NHL games.

New York Islanders (7-5-2) at Montreal Canadiens (9-6-0)

Montreal is now on a 5 game winning streak, but the competition gets a little stronger tonight in the Islanders. Montreal is hoping with the changes that the 2nd line will start producing. Since moving Ladd to the 2nd line and Ronov to the 1st five games ago, Al Ladd has 0 goals and 3 assists, Dave Wright has 1 goal and 3 assists and Batsiakhany Vanoosten has 1 goal and 0 assists. Meanwhile on the new 1st line, Lorenzo Bocci has 4 goals and 5 assists, Chris Hughes had 5 goals and 5 assists and Yevgeny Ronov has 1 goal and 2 assists.

The Islanders are led by RD Josh Boll. The 31 year old from Edmonton Alberta has 2 goals and 8 points in 14 games this year. Boll has 178 NHL games under his belt, all with the Islanders and has 25 goals and 88 career points. Boll does not shy away from the rough stuff, he has 262 career PIMs. LD Alex Arnett is a key contributor to the Islanders. The 32 year old Arnett much like Boll is more of a defensive defenseman. In 14 games this season, he has 2 goals and 4 points. For his career he has 16 goals and 63 points with 188 PIMs in 168 games. C Jim Lafayette maybe old, but he is still effective. The 38 year old has 4 goals and 11 points in 14 games this year. For his career, Lafayette has 46 goals and 126 points in 172 games. Lafayette became an Islander after a cross-town trade with the Rangers at the end of the 81-82 season.

Montreal will start Mike Blackshear in net. In 13 games he has a .889 save % while the Islanders will start Jake Wooten who has a .913 save % in 13 games. This is the 1st meeting between these teams this season.

New York 4 Montreal 3 (O/T)

Montreal opens up the scoring at 6:39 with the 2nd of the season for RD Martin Sulc. The period ended up pretty even with the shots being 10 to 10. Montreal leads 1-0. Looking at the shot graph, Montreal did a good job of keeping the Islanders boxed out and long shots.

Lorenzo Bocci makes it 2-0 at 3:00 of the 2nd. Bocci scored his 11th of the year from just inside the face off circle. Montreal adds a 3rd goal, Yevgeny Ronov gets his 2nd of the year at 6:26 to make it 3-0. Again Montreal did a very good job of keeping the shots from a distance and are now out shooting the Islanders 27 to 14.

The Islanders break the shut out bid of Blackshear at 8:15 of the 3rd when C Franklin Whalen gets his 6th of the year. It was the Islanders 1st shot of the period and the 1st one from in-tight all night. The Islanders get another quick one, Jim Fafayette gets his 5th of the season at 9:02 and again score from short range. Its now 3-2 Montreal. With the Islanders building up some momentum, RD Martin Sulc takes a interference penalty at 10:41. The Islanders capitalize on the PP with Neal McQueen's 4th and Montreal blows a 3-0 lead. Montreal goes onto the PP with 4:22 left in the game. The Habs get 3 shots on the PP, but it remains tied at 3-3. The period ends tied 3-3 with the Canadiens now out shooting the Islanders 34 to 21.

Montreal has its winning streak snapped as the Islanders Phillipe Caron scored his 7th of the year at 1:28 off overtime. The final shots on goal are 36 to 22 for Montreal.

Islanders C Franklin Whalen was named the 1st star for his goal and 2 assists. The 19 year old Whalen has 6 goals and 9 points in 15 games for the Islanders. Whalen was a rookie for the Islanders last season when he scored 19 times and added 25 assists with 74 PIMs. He played in Seattle for the WHL in 80-81 where he had 28 goals and 88 points in his final junior year. He was the 80th overall pick by the Islanders in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

Montreal Canadiens (9-6-1) at Florida Panthers (6-7-2)

Off to Florida we go, although we lost a few nights ago, we have points in 6 straight games. Our last regulation loss was October 7th in a 5-1 loss to these Florida Panthers. My "Who's Hot" list has C Chris Hughes and LW Lorenzo Bocci on it, my "Who's Not" list is basically the 2nd line. The chemistry is just not there, offensively or defensively. The issue is that do I dare make a change when we are 5-0-1 since the change. Nope !

The top players on the Florida roster is led by RW Martin Babirad. The 30 year old has 2 goals and 10 points in 15 games, and certainly not on the pace for 74 points that he had in 81-82. He has been a pretty productive player with Florida scoring 61 goals and 148 points in 175 career NHL games. At $10.0 M per season, the Panthers expect him to heat up. LD Will Petty is certainly a solid defensive player. Not big in stature which maybe why he has been on the I/R more then on the roster. Over the past 3 years the 31 year old Panther has played 33 games, 27 games and only 5 so far this year. RD Zak Swain burnt us for 3 goals in our last meeting. The 39 year old now has 6 goals and 9 points in 15 games. Over his career Swain has 29 goals and 101 points in 144 NHL games.

Montreal is healthy with all the regulars playing. With back to back games and the Atlantic division leading Bruins up tomorrow the Habs will go with back up Steve Burris. Burris is 0-2 in his 2 starts, but has a .931 save %. Florida is going with Rob Wolf, he has 11 starts and a .908 save %.

Florida 7 Montreal 4

It took 6 minutes for Montreal to get their first shot on net as it was a slow start for both teams in that department. At 15:48 the struggling 2nd line came through for Montreal as RW Al Ladd scored his 3rd of the year. A few minutes later Habs killer Zak Swain scored his 7th of the year on the PP. Time of the goal was 17:38. The Panthers score another goal on the PP, this time Mike Tate with his 3rd at 19:27. The period would end with the Panthers lead 2-1 and out shooting Montreal 11 to 6.

LW Lorenzo Bocci ties it up with his 12th of the year at 4:03 of the 2nd period. The period ends tied 2-2. The shots were 5 to 5 in the 2nd. So far Florida is 2 for 6 on the PP and Montreal is 0 for 2.

Florida takes a 3-2 lead when Michael Redenbach scores his 2nd of the year at 3:16 while on the PP. Montreal gets that one right back when C Chris Hughes gets his 11th goal of the year on the PP at 3:50. Florida takes a 4-3 lead at 9:17 when Mike Tate gets his 4th of the season. This time at even strength. Just what Montreal needs, Marc-Andre Berube gets a holding minor at 14:27 when the Panther PP has already scored 3 times on 8 chances. Well it gets better, Matej Ouhrabka gets 2 for cross checking on the ensuing face-off. Florida will be on a 5 on 3 for nearly 2 full minutes. Mike Tate completes the Hat Trick with his 5th of the year at 15:53. Its 5-3 and we still have a second penalty to kill. C Chris Hughes scores at 16:15 while SH and the Canadiens are back to within 1 on Hughes 12th goal. Florida seal the deal with a couple of late goals including an empty netter and beat Montreal 7-4.

Florida's LW Mike Tate was named the 1st star, he had 3 goals. The 19 year old Tate now has 5 goals and 16 points in 16 games. Last season as an NHL rookie, Tate had 18 goals and 50 points playing in all 82 games. He was an impressive +18 as a rookie. He was the Panthers 72nd overall pick in the 1981 NHL entry Draft.
