An exercise in bullpenning
As the first season of "bullpenning" comes to a close, I had the idea to do an experiment in OOTP to see how bullpenning part of your starting rotation translates into a big market team actively designing their team around such a strategy. I've decided to document that experiment here.
Before we begin, some things to note: 1. This is OOTP 18. 2. I will be using the New York Yankees in a standard game beginning in 2017. I have chosen the Yankees for three reasons: one, the large market; two, the DH (so I don't have to keep pinch-hitting for relievers); three, several elite relievers already in place. The fact that I'm a Yankee fan is also a bonus 3. Development speed for both hitters and pitchers is 1.000. Aging speed for both is .800. 4. I have edited Luis Severino so that he approximates a 2.50 ERA. It is my belief that this strategy is most effective when you have an ace, and since this is OOTP 18 the Yankees do not have one. Therefore, I have given them one. 5. I have changed Chad Green from a starter to a reliever. I have raised his velocity to 98-100mph, increased his fastball skill to 200, and dropped his stamina to 50. With that out of the way, let's begin. Before the season began, I made several moves designed to decrease payroll size and get some young arms. 1) Traded Matt Holiday and Chris Carter to the Nationals for SP Erick Fedde, RP Koda Glover, and RF Juan Soto (reminder - this is before he became a top prospect) 2) Traded IF Tyler Wade to the White Sox for RPs David Robertson and Zach Putnam. 3) CF Jacoby Ellsbury and SP Michael Pineda to the Cubs for OF Ian Happ and RP David Berg 4) 1B Mike Ford for 1B Luke Voit (yes, I did this because of real life. don't judge me.) 5) Signed OF Melvin Upton, Jr. for $1.5 million. The 2017 Opening Day New York Yankees: C: Gary Sanchez C: Austin Romine 1B: Greg Bird 2B: Starlin Castro 2B: Rob Refsynder SS:Ronald Torreyes SS: Ruben Tejada 3B: Chase Headley LF: Brett Gardner LF: Melvin Upton, Jr. CF:Aaron Hicks RF: Aaron Judge SP: Luis Severino SP: Masahiro Tanaka SP: CC Sabathia SP: Jordan Montgomery CL: Aroldis Chapman RP: Dellin Betances RP: Chad Green RP: David Robertson RP: Zach Putnam RP: Jonathan Holder RP: Tommy Layne RP: Tyler Clippard RP: Adam Warren And Here We Go! |

April Monthly Report
Batting Statistics Analysis: So far the offense has been middle-of-the-road of the American League: 7th in runs scored, 10th in HR, 2nd in OBP. 1B Greg Bird has struggled, and CF Aaron Hicks has cooled off after a hot start to the season. C Gary Sanchez, meanwhile, has continued where he left off his rookie year. Melvin Upton Jr. has been a terrific late-March pickup Chase Headley and Starlin Castro were both traded as part of an effort to clear future salary that began before the start of the season. Chase Headley can be replaced for a fraction of the cost, and getting LA to take on his entire salary saved $13 million in next year’s payroll. Although Starlin Castro had been one of the team’s best hitters, I believed that I was selling high on him in addition to clearing future salary ($30 million over 3 years), while also opening up 2B in the future for top prospect Gleyber Torres. These moves have brought next year’s project payroll to $90 million, which could be even less if Masahiro Tanaka opts out of his contract. Pitching Stats: Analysis: The pitching is the reason this team is 18-6. The pitching staff has given up the fewest runs in the American League. As a whole, the bullpen is allowing the team opportunities to come back in games the starter has struggled or the offense doesn’t get going until late, while the depth of the pen is allowing the pen to pitch more high-leverage innings without overworking the top arms. I would also like to note that half of Chapman’s earned runs occurred when I attempted to pitch him 3 days in a row. The pitching staff, however, could still use some upgrades. I don’t trust Tommy Layne in high-leverage situations. Only reason he’s still on the roster is that I like to have two non-closer lefties in my bullpens and I trust Chasen Shreve, who is in AAA Scranton, even less. Meanwhile, Adam Warren has a tendency to give up the long-ball. I’m scouring the waiver wire and the trade market for suitable upgrades, but I haven’t been able to find any. I’m riding out CC’s contract for as long as I can and hoping he can at least be an innings eater for me. I might start replacing his starts with bullpen games if he doesn’t turn it around though. |

May Monthly Report
I’m currently experimenting with different types of monthly reports so rather than just giving out raw stats like in April, I’m going to do a position-by-position analysis. Catcher: Gary Sanchez has cooled off a bit since his incredibly hot April, but he still has hit 17 HR and driven in 32 runs. However, his AVG and OBP have dipped to .244 and .298, respectively. Defensively, he has been almost exactly average on the year. Meanwhile, Austin Romine has only played in 8 games so far this season and has only accrued 32 plate appearances on the year. In future months Austin Romine will be getting a little more playing time, as I prefer my starting catchers to not be on pace to catch 140 games in a season. Gary Sanchez has been worth 1.4 WAR in 41 games, and Austin Romine has been worth 0.2 in 8 games. First Base: Greg Bird has struggled mightily, in particular against lefties. All 4 of Bird’s home runs have come against RHPs, and 12 of 13 of his extra base hits. Bird has hit .228 with an OBP of .318, and has been worth a total of -0.2 WAR in 49 games. Bird is in danger of losing is starting 1B job – whether through a platoon or through someone taking the job outright. Second Base: Ronald Torreyes took the 2B job after the trade of Starlin Castro and has done taken the job outright. On the season he’s hitting .321 and scored 27 runs. At the moment he currently has more walks (16) than strikeouts (15). Furthermore, he has an absolutely ridiculous AVG and OBP against lefties of .480 and .536, respectively. Shortstop: Didi Gregorius came back from injury and immediately provided a spark to the Yankee offense. In only 15 games he has already hit 6 home runs and been worth 0.8 WAR. So far this season Didi has been a plus defender up the middle. Third Base: J.T. Riddle came over from the Marlins in exchange for Caleb Smith. Since then, he has lit NY on fire. He is hitting an otherworldly .343 with 3 HR and 12 RBI in only 18 games, while providing plus defense at the hot corner. He is unlikely to be able to maintain this pace, as his .350 BABIP is likely unsustainable, but his defense gives him a relatively high floor for production. In 18 games, Riddle has been worth 0.9 WAR. Left Field: Raimel Tapia recently was promoted from AAA Scranton to play LF, moving Melvin Upton Jr. to the 4th outfielder spot. Tapia has struggled so far at the plate in his first few games, with only 3 hits (all singels) in 19 ABs. However, Tapia, a natural CF, has played terrific defense in left. After a hot April, Melvin Upton Jr. crashed back down to earth, showing why he was a free agent all the way until the end of March. Melvin Upton Jr does have above-average power and elite defense in the outfielder, which makes him a good choice for 4th OF at this point of his career. In 5 games, Tapia has been worth -0.1 WAR; in 44 games Upton has been worth 0.6 WAR. Center Field: Aaron Hicks has quietly been among the best players in baseball. Hitting .313 with 12 HRs and 33 RBIs, Hicks has been a force in the middle of the Yankee order. Meanwhile, he has been average for a CF defensively. Hicks has been worth 2.1 WAR, highest amongst all position players on the team. Right Field: Aaron Judge has driven in a team-leading 34 runs and has stabilized the middle of the order. He has hit 16 HRs and has hit .275 while playing one of the best RFs in the American League. Judge has been worth 1.6 WAR in 49 games. Designated Hitter: Brett Gardner isn’t exactly what one would call your traditional designated hitter. He does not hit with much power and is a plus defender in left. Truth is, I’ve tried getting rid of his contract but I’m not getting offers good enough to make the move. However, as he is still on the roster he is currently the best option for the DH spot, so here he is. He has a rather impressive OBP of .383 and has been worth 0.8 WAR in 46 games. Starting Rotation: Luis Severino is the ace of this staff. He is 7-1 with an ERA of 2.19 and has already been worth 3.0 WAR in 10 starts on the year. He has 89 strikeouts in only 70 innings. However, I will be doing my best to limit his workload over the next few months so that he is healthy and not overworked in the postseason. Masahiro Tanaka has struggled on the year, with a record of 1-3 and an ERA over 5. He has been bitten by the home run ball, particularly against lefties. He has been worth 0.9 WAR in 10 starts, but his biggest value at the moment is that he is on pace for over 200 innings. Meanwhile, Jordan Montgomery continues to find ways to win. He is 4-0 with an ERA of 4.04. Together, the starting rotation has an ERA of 4.61, good for 7th in the American League. Bullpen: David Robertson and Jonathan Holder have been the leaders out of the pen. Both pitchers currently have ERAs under 1, and Holder took the closer’s job from Chapman. Chapman has been one of two relievers who have struggled this year, the other one being the since-traded Adam Warren. Chapman has an ERA of 6.50, almost entirely due to struggling against right-handed hitters. At the moment, he has being used in lower-leverage situations or as a lefty specialist. The bullpen has been worth 4.5 WAR in 173 innings. |

At the end of the tenth week, the Yankees are 40-22, leading the AL East by 4.5 games over the 36-27 Boston Red Sox. The bullpen has ERA of 3.27, good for 2nd in the AL. The Yankees are 11-8 in bullpen games on the year. I would also like to note that June 6th was the MLB Draft. Due to the vastly decreased payroll (currently about $100 million, with another $20 million in dead money from releasing CC Sabathia, we are able to spend a significant amount of capital on bonuses to players with “Impossible” signing ability. The hope with this is that, while payroll is low and we have a lot of money to play with, we can restock the farm system. As the years go on and we put more and more resources into the bullpen, these prospects could be valuable either as trade chips for elite relievers or as inexpensive additions to the lineup or rotation (or in trades for inexpensive additions to the lineup or rotation). |
