Our RDiff is also best at +207 (621 pace) and we're winning all the close ones (unlike the previous 2 seasons). We're 4-0 in extras and 12-1 in 1-run games. In the Who's Hot list, it may as well put the whole team there (slight exaggeration). What a crazy start!

Also, Schilling is 12-0 1.94 ERA and tossed a no-hitter. And we're making a lot more PP this year. So, the secret to making lots of PP is to win a lot. Who knew?!

Edit: Look at those Dukes and Dolphins in the other conference! We'll probably finish the season 3rd or 4th in W, but it's been fun to see us do so well up to this point.
Looks like the dolphins and dukes don’t face each other until after the ASG. Good luck keeping up the pace over there!

After the forgettable 2052 season, the Piranha have made a much more solid start to 2053 in S307, both offensively and defensively. Currently 2nd place in their division with a record of 36-29, and topping many of the stats in the AC...

Hugh Duffy has been a revelation this season. Once a liability in the outfield, he's excelling in his new role as DH, with a Batting AVG of .311, 8 HRs, 41 Runs Batted In, 15 Stolen Bases, and an On-Base PCT of .386.

I just noticed that Mariano Rivera has given up just 4 runs all season and all of them in 1 game I won by the score of 24-12.

P420: Check Out That NC West!

Huntley and Amsterdam seem on their way to the top 2 seeds in the AC, but the real story of P420 is the NC West, which houses the top 3 NC teams. In a story of contrasts, the Miami Jeters lead the NC in runs allowed (247), while the top 2 in the NC in runs scored are the New Orleans Yankees (477) and the RKO PackAndPlay (414). Does defense really win championships? Or is the best defense a good offense? Time will tell in P420...

Surprises so far this season for Huntley include the struggles of both its bullpen lefties, Vida Blue (4.26 ERA, 98 ERA+) and Harry Brecheen (4.45 ERA, 94 ERA+); on the other hand, having a starting rotation with ERAs of 2.16 (Marquard), 2.24 (Clemens), 2.32 (Walsh), 2.38 (Schilling), and 2.88 (Waddell) certainly makes up for that. Offensively, Norm Cash bounced back from posting an April OPS of .612 to lighting up the league so far in June with a 1.227 OPS; he and Christian Yelich (.866 OPS, 139 OPS+) lead the charge for the Red Raiders.

Current standings follow...

The Frogs (61-19, +221) went into a bit of a tailspin in the month of June. Overall, the 16-7 mark isn't terrible, but the alarming issue is dropping 6/7 games over a 10 day span to another NC contender. The DownEast squad that dominated the Frogs are now 60-21 themselves.

In game 1 of this stretch, neither team scored until the 13th inning. Whereupon, the Frogs scored one in top half only for DownEast to score 2 on an Anthony Rendon walkoff double against Johan Santana. The Frogs left 12 men on base compared to DownEast's 1.

Game 2 was a 3-1 DownEast victory in more conventional fashion. His 100 Carl Hubbell was just better than my 100 Mathewson.

DownEast finished the home sweep with yet another 3-1 win. This one featured a walkoff 2-run home run by 100 George Brett against 100 John Smoltz. Smoltz is the 4-time reigning reliever of the year.

After a quickie against some other teams, DownEast and La Crosse reconvened in La Crosse for 4 games. The opener is the only game the Frogs won off this team. My Ed Walsh beat his Ed Walsh in a 6-1 Mortal Kombat-style mirror match. Games 2, 3, and 4 saw DownEast win 10-5, 4-3, and 9-0. Mathewson got bombed again in game 2, my Coveleski was no match for his Pete Alexander in game 3, and my Seaver got torched in game 4.

We'll have to figure something out against this team in the playoffs.

On the positive side of the ledger, the Frogs have climbed above .600 cumulative winning percentage in the team's history, and continue to climb the Managers & Rankings leaderboard in wins (3329). Last I checked, we were on page 17 of the rankings and now we're on page 9. The Frogs have been over .700 WPct for the last 3 seasons, ranging from .704 to .784. For reference, the top whales in the game tend to hover between .700 and .800. Only the Bronx Bombers have been around since the beginning of PT 2.0 and are above .800.

The Raccoons finally had a losing streak greater than 1 (that's 74 games without a losing streak of 2 or more) when the 2nd place team swept them in 3. Because of this major slump, I decided it was time to take action so I added perfect Pedro. Someone was selling him for only a little over 200k which is all I had saved up so it worked out perfectly.

We've got a series coming up with the Flatbush Dukes (.813 WPct) which should be interesting. Schilling will pitch in this series which will endanger his perfect 17-0 record (he's had only 1 no-decision). We'll also have Pedro available for that series so that should help too. The addition of Pedro will be especially helpful in the post-season of course, though we've been doing pretty well there for a while now (we've won 7 WS in the last 15 seasons - we won only 1 in our first 12 seasons in perfect).

The Mashers have put together one of their best offensive efforts in years. Rocky Colavito is killing it as usual, and even enjoying a career year as he knocks the ball around Fletcher Field on his way to 17 HR, 56 RBI, a .943 OPS, and a surefire All-Star selection. Pulls of LIVE Grandal and LIVE Albies have improved defense at 2B and C, and the Mashers are as strong up the middle as ever. Both have enjoyed the home cooking, even from the left side in a RH-favoring park, posting .930 and .800 OPS's respectively. Ken Griffey Jr. has spat in the face of park factors as well, posting a career high .280/.335/.534 slash, possibly thanks to mostly neutral parks within the division. Only two regular batters are below .750 OPS, and yet the team is in the relegation zone. This is because...

The pitching is dreadful. My starters are allowing 5 runs per 9, except for McCullers, who's allowing 7. Ryan Pressly and Shohei Ohtani have been capable in the bullpen, but Kirby Yates and Hansel Robles have been mediocre, and the three incompetent stooges bringing up the back of the pen don't even bear mentioning.

With probable relegation comes an opportunity for a reset. Maybe I'll earn more PP back in Gold, but aside from selling a quite disappointing LIVE Matt Chapman there's not much potential for a roster overhaul. The thought of selling Maddox and Griffey and replacing them with Jimmy Piersall in CF and, uh, Ed Charles? at DH is tempting, but I'm not sure the downgrades there are worth the upgrade of one 35k pitcher or 35 packs that could end up bearing nothing.

The Frogs are sitting at 78-28, which is good for best record in P401 (tied with DownEast). The Belfast Dodgers (75-33) and San Francisco SmallerBallers (77-30) are the class of the other conference.

The team is feeling a bit "cold" right now despite being a full 50 games over .500. That's because we ran up an .830 WPct in April/May and are only .650 in June/July. The horror!

It seems like every time I turn around, 100 Christy Mathewson is getting blown up. Not only did he struggle in 2 starts against my probable playoff competition, but the last sim of the night (a ghastly 11-1 loss) saw Mathewson throw 25 pitches, give up 7 runs on 6 hits and 2 HR, and record zero outs. I mean, it was against a good offense, but not a great offense...Long story short, I might be fixing to replace Mathewson if the opportunity arises.

100 Ed Walsh (16-2, 2.15 ERA, 5.9 WAR) is Walsh-ian in his exploits as usual. He leads the conference in WAR and is eyeing another great pitcher award. This was easily the best mission I've completed (and not even accounting for the SE Appling that has been putting up 5 WAR/season for the past 11 seasons).

The Frogs are all over the conference leaderboard in batting WAR, too. 100 Ozzie (4.5), 100 Ripken (4.4), and 100 Bonds (3.8) form a triumvirate at the top. 100 Barry Bonds (.289/.400/.494, 17 HR 86 RBI 16 SB) was the All-Star game's top vote-getter. Nice. He can bring the 'cream' and the 'clear' into our clubhouse anytime he wants.

Christian Yelich continues to have a nice year as he trains up at 1B. I know all you guys are dying to know where his training is at, so I'll cut to the chase here: Yelich is a 57-rated 1B now. He also has a wee bit of a chance at doing 30/30 this season. The 15 HR pair quite nicely with his 23 SB so far. Not to mention the .322/.427/.542 batting line.

It's seven or eight more weeks... and only the Critters have a whiff at the playoffs anymore.

The Piranha are currently 65-54 and occupy 2nd place in their division, as well as holding on to the AC wildcard by a slim lead.

As usual it's the pitchers holding the team back, as the batting roster are very much holding their own in both offense and defense.

This was a nice surprise though, the biggest win in the Piranha's history...

In parallel with the actual Raccoons right now, the current-season PT Raccoons are a frustrating bunch. They punch WAY above their assumed weight (84-49!) and yet will still find themselves in a wild card scenario because they're 12 games out in the division.

As of now, their opposition would be a losing team.

Boy, do I see that one not going well!

We're 8th (of 30) in runs scored and runs allowed and the offense is consistently goodish in all categories, except base stealing (frowns). The pen remains weak, but I have mostly resigned emotionally on that. That SE Trevor Hoffman would help, but as long as gold Tony Gwynn cards go for 8k, and the diamonds for it for 20k, that's not gonna happen any time soon.

Mel Ott is having a random bad year, but we have four position players (including the fake position) that are producing an OPS better than .800, which is sweet: Dan Brouthers, Frank Thomas, Jeff McNeil, and Brooks Robinson.

And yet, we're gonna play a losing team in the wild card round, and I'm almost sure I know how that's gonna end.

P420: Penultimate Roundup

P420 is a study in contrasts. In the AC, the division-leading Huntley Red Raiders, Amsterdam Armada, and Blue Farm Bombers have pulled away from the field, with the smallest division lead the 14.5 games between the Bombers and the Ohio Silver Wolves. The Wild Card spots are still highly contested, however, with the Toronto Charmanders currently in the top spot and the aforementioned Wolves and the LSU Tigers tied for the second spot. Huntley's lead for the #1 AC seed is at 8 games, so theoretically it should be safe, but one never knows...

Over in the NC, every single race is tight; the biggest division lead is 4.5 games, and ironically enough, it's in the division that houses the best 3 teams in the conference, the NC West. All 3 of those teams--RKO PackAndPlay, Miami Jeters, and New Orleans Yankees--will easily make the playoffs, with the only drama left being which team will be the #1 seed and which teams will face off in the Wild Card game. The NC East and Central division winners will be the only teams from those divisions to make the playoffs, so a lot is on the line in the final month of the season.

Huntley's month was also a study in contrasts. The Red Raiders came out of the All-Star Break red-hot, winning 13 games in a row. Over its next 11 games, however, the team stumbled to a 4-7 record. But Huntley ended the day on an 11-game winning streak. Here's hoping we don't peak too soon...

Offensively, the team is having a very balanced year, with Mantle, Vaughan, Brett, and Appling accumulating 4.0 or more WAR to this point and Bonds, Cash, and Griffey Jr between 3.0 and 3.3 WAR. On the pitching side, every starter has accumulated at least 5.0 WAR though August, lead by Curt Schilling's 6.2, although it's Ed Walsh's 1.97 ERA that catches the eye. The bullpen has been solid, with Dennis Eckersley the standout with a 1.17 ERA in a setup role. Potential playoff red flag: despite succeeding in 38 of 41 save situations, Eric Gagne's ERA is the bullpen's highest at 3.94, and that's actually better than his FIP (4.48); all that leads to Gagne accumulating exactly 0.0 WAR through August.

111 W and still 1 day to go in August. We only need to win 19 of 29 to break our old win record of 129. Barring a collapse, we should have the home-field advantage at least up until the WS, but those Dolphins are now only 1 back and will almost certainly pass us before the end. But their park factors are nearly identical to ours so it shouldn't really matter where we play them (IF we get to play them).

Keeler continues to be one of my most productive hitters. This is Keeler's 24th full season with the Raccoons and he's about to pass 5400 H (averaging 220 H/season). On the pitching side, Schilling continues his hot pace and is now 25-1 (he started 17-0) and has a shot at being our 1st 30 game winner (I always use a 5-man). And Keefe is have a terrific year and just got his 550th W.

We've been much luckier than our +4 W above Pyt indicates. For example, we're 5-0 in extras and 19-2 in 1-run games. If only the post-season would have come earlier in the year. We'd probably have won the WS as hot (and lucky!) as we were then.

Keeler's hitting about .333 for me. He doesn't have much power but you take his 10-15 homers in leagues where not many players besides Babe & a few others have much a chance at hitting more than 37
