Monday, April 21, 1952 CUBS, GATORS BREAK LOGJAM IN SISL Delacroix and Guedon are now the top teams in the South Island Second League... the four-way logjam with St. Dominic and Meraux has been put asunder at least for this weekend... the Delacroix Cubs ripped the last place Bayou Bleu Blues 9-4 and the Guedon Gators eased by the St. Dominic Saints 2-0 in a battle of co-leaders... Meraux missed out on three-way tie for the top spot when the Chitamaca Moccasins surprised them 9-7... Delacroix and Guedon are both 5-3 in the standings, while three clubs, St. Dominic, Meraux and Chitamaca are just one game behind in the pennant race in third place with 4-4 records. |

MY LIFE IN 1952
EC's Still Havin' Fun in '52, Too! School Days Well, now Little Darlin's and all you Buckaroos... it's the third week in April... I'm living in New Orleans... going to the sixth grade at C. J. Colton Elementary School... EC is doing quite well in school... straight A's except for a C in conduct... yes, I do cut up in class every now and then. I'm playing ball for the first time in my life at school... PE teacher is Mr. Bonck… he rolls the balls out for and tell us to play... that's about it as far as Physical Education is concerned... we play basketball, football and softball... not organized at all... but we still have lots of fun. Entertainment As far as entertainment... went to a movie with my Mama this past weekend... my Dad is out at sea on a merchant marine ship...we saw A Song in My Heart with the beautiful Susan Hayworth, my Mama's favorite movie star... for an adult movie it was pretty good... but it has too much kissing for yours truly, EC... as a budding movie critic, it could have used a lot more rootin' tootin' shootin' action.. needed John Wayne or Randolph Scott or Wild Bill Elliott... or maybe all three of them.... we saw it downtown on Canal Street at the beautiful Loew's State Theatre... we also saw a preview of a new movie featuring the girl I eventually wanted to marry - Debbie Reynolds... Singin' in the Rain... a great movie with Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor. I was reading the New Orleans Times-Picayune to get the news stories of the day... news, sports, movies and entertainment. Look at the WDSU-TV schedule for Monday, April 21, 1952... not much too see, was it?... even if we had had a TV back then, I don't think we would have watched it. But we had a radio... and yes, EC listened every day in the afternoon to the kids action programs... today I listened to the Cisco Kid 5:00 to 5:30 pm. Big News of the Day in the Life of EC. The Southern Association opened its Double A season a week or so ago... both my Mobile Bears and New Orleans Pelicans are doing well in the early going... Don Zimmer is the Mobile shortstop and leadoff hitter... he really was a fine shortstop with good power at this point in his career... power-hitting shortstops didn't exist in 1952... teams picked shortstops based mainly on the defensive skills... Zimmer was headed straight for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Major Leagues... but when got to Triple A and the St. Paul Saints in the American Association, a wayward pitch beaned him and he was never the same as a hitter... still he had enough talent to play in the Majors for 10 years or so as a journeyman infielder... my goodness, there is no telling how good Don Zimmer could have been... me thinks, he would have hit 20 homers a year and hit .300, except for the head injury. In World News: There are in peace negotiations to end the Korean War... but they are still fighting while they try to end it. In US Election News: The Presidential Election is coming in a few months... Democratic President Truman is going up against Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee and Adlai Stevenson of Illinois... it will be General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Robert Taft battling it out for the Republican nomination... 1952 was a different world from today... they knew how to run for election in a civil way back then... money still played a part, but not like today, when millions are wasted and just a few rich people decide elections to some extent... the Supreme Court really made a poor decision when it allowed PACs... we really need to cut down on the lengths of our election... two years is too much... we really need to find some way to take the money out of politics, too... the US Congress and the US Senate spend half of their time raising campaign funds rather than taking care of legislation and our country. I've included a few news stories taken from the New Orleans Times-Picayune to give you a taste of what's going on in '52. Last edited by Eugene Church; 01-20-2020 at 12:22 PM. |

Monday, April 27, 1952 CRUNCH BUNCH IN SOUTH ISLAND FIRST LEAGUE It's just a six-team league, but it has four teams in first place this week... the South Island First League is tightly bunched together with a 4-way tie for the the top spot... Des Allemands, Claiborne, Labadieville and Opelousas are all crunched up with 5-4 records... Bar Harbor is just a game out in the fifth spot in the standings... cellar-dwelling Mystic is just two games off the pace... and what caused all of the chaos?... the Claiborne Cardinals dealt the Des Allemands Eagles a 3-2 defeat in 14 innings... the Labadieville Pelicans flew past the Bar Harbor Acadians 10-2... and the Opelousas Lions prevailed over the Mystic Mariners 5-1. |
