J.R. Donahoe, RHP

Won the 1919 AL Pitcher of the Year award after putting up 4 well above-average seasons in a row. He has also made two all-star teams. Donahoe was drafted with the 2nd pick in the 1914 draft out of Minnesota.

Ynilo Tristan, 2B

Tristan was drafted in the 6th round in 1909 out of Sue Cleveland High School in New Mexico and saw a surge in value in 1912. He just narrowly missed out on the MVP this season as he only played in 130 games, missing a month with a high ankle sprain. He has been to two all-star games and won a gold glove.

Mike Sandoval, 2B

Sandoval came out of the Texas High School system as a 1st round pick in 1909 and his career has been impacted heavily by injury. Despite this, he has been to 3 all-star games and was part of the 1919 Phillies Championship team.

Augustin Fernandez, RHP

A scouting discovery out of Venezuela in 1908 and has turned into a valuable pitcher. He has made two all-star teams and won the World Series in 1918.

Thomas Hagan, CF

The Braves got a good one with Hagan, drafted 5th in 1913 from the NCHSAA. In 1917, he won Rookie of the Year and the CF Gold Glove and finished 2nd in the MVP voting. He won the MVP in 1918 and has been to 3 all-star teams.

The Dbacks really put a lot of their eggs in Dorado's basket for the next 6 years. He is durable but did just recently lose a couple of months to injury in 1919.


Kriegel signed with the Phillies for 6 years.

I have a sneaking suspicion that things are going to change quite quickly in the major leagues in the upcoming years. The baseball now has a cork center, spitballs are outlawed, and players are starting to talk about this thing called the home run. Now is a good time to look back at the first 20 years of the league and reminisce about the pioneers in baseball history.

Noel Garcia hit 18 home runs in 1900, a mark that has seemed insurmountable. The top 3 home run seasons and 5 of the top 7 all took place in 1900 . Levi Bryant hit 15 in 1913 and Nate Clements hit 14 in 1901, but neither came close to breaking the record. There have been two players to hit 3 home runs in a major league game - Bryant in 1913 and Mike Bayerle back in 1901.

Nate Clements is the current career home run record holder with 95 - not quite able to push into the triple digit mark.

Stolen bases have been plentiful without regard for caught stealing numbers, with two players pushing past the four digit mark - Aiden Massicotte and Aiden Shelton. The season record for stolen bases is 152 by Gelacio Arcos and the game record is 7 - Lochlan Collyer on 9/27/1910. Toussaint Antoine and Joe Vencill both had 6 in a game.

Neal Worthington's 35 game hitting streak in 1912 still stands as the record and Cezar Castaneda's 29-game streak is the most recent challenger.

Aiden Shelton has recently pushed past Nate Clements as the most valuable batter of the Deadball Era. He is still only 34 and should have a few good years left to add to his total.

On the pitching side, Celio Cabedo is the only pitcher to have 15 strikeouts in a game, a feat he performed twice in 1904. Freddy Fleischer and Jameson Worren have pitched the only perfect games. There have been 27 other no-hitters.

The era was dominated by J.P. Avila, the best player in baseball history up to this point. He is the only player to have over 100 WAR, had 229 complete games, and 73 shutouts. He also holds the record for strikeouts with 2,318 - fellow Hall of Famer Zach Jensen is the only other pitcher with more than 2,000.

29 players have been inducted into the Hall of Fame with another 28 well on their way. I want to look at where they came from and how the first few generations of players are interacting.

Of these 57 elite players, 22 were part of the initial league creation - 19 were in the major leagues in 1900. Only 3 were part of the initial feeder league creation - 2 college, 1 high school. All 3 were drafted within the first 32 picks.

That leaves 35 out of 57 elite players that were not part of the initial league creation, which hopefully means talent level out of the feeders is not an issue (or at least it is self-regulating).

Now to break down those 35 players - 26 came from college, 5 from high school, and 4 international. 24 were 1st round draft picks, 30 were somewhere in the top 4 rounds, and only one was drafted later than the 4th round - Zach Jensen.

15 are starting pitchers and only 1 reliever. The breakdown of batters are as follows:

Ever since 1903, none of the elite players have been drafted past the 2nd round. It was only in the early years where some of the lower draft picks made it to Hall of Fame caliber. I could even dare to say that none of the players created since 1900 and drafted in the 2nd round or later have had a chance at the Hall. Really the only player who could say that is Luke McCaffrey, but catchers break the rules come HOF time.

Really the only elite high schooler since 1900 is Devon McFadden. I have noticed that teams tend to keep these players in the minor leagues longer, even if they should be promoted a little faster. This still happens even if the player attended college after high school. Since many elite high school prospects fail to sign and go to college, they are then left in the minor leagues until they are 23/24, robbing them of valuable productive time in the major leagues.

MLB

The best franchises so far by winning percentage are the Royals (.552), Padres (.540), Phillies (.531), Red Sox (.523), and Yankees (.519). The Phillies, Brewers, Dodgers, and Padres have all won the World Series twice. The Expos (.518) are the best team to not yet win it all.

The Diamondbacks are by far the worst franchise (.440), followed by the Cardinals (.468), Devil Rays (.475), Rangers (.478), and Angels (.480). Every team has made the playoffs at least once (literally once in the case of the Dbacks) and 16 different teams have been victorious in the Fall Classic.

NCAA

3 Teams have won multiple championships in the NCAA, which is pretty impressive considering the playoffs are full of one-game knockout rounds - San Diego State, Michigan, and Ohio State. The top colleges to play for if you really want to win are Pittsburgh, St Johns, UC Santa Barbara, Tulane, and North Carolina. If the opposite is true, try out Minnesota, Arizona, Maryland, Nebraska, or UCLA. Baylor has made the playoffs an impressive 14 times but has never hoisted a championship banner.

High School

California is all about Central High School in Fresno. They have been to 8 State Championships and have won 6 of them. Steele Canyon has yet to win one.

Florida is more balanced, though the Osceola Kowboys have won 15 more games than the next best team and made 7 finals.

Georgia has two teams with no championships - North Cobb and Lambert. Gainesville has the best winning percentage and Allatoona has the most championships.

In Illinois, every team has had a chance as the top dog, but Carmel has made it to more finals than anyone else.

Archbishop Molloy has been dominant in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association with 9 playoffs and 6 championships. Pine Bush has the 2nd best winning percentage but has only made 2 playoffs and won zero.

New Mexico doesn't have a dominant team but Eldorado has the best winning percentage and most championships. La Cueva has the worst winning percentage but has made 4 playoffs and won 3 championships.

North Carolina's teams have been pretty well-balanced with no team winning more than 4 or fewer than 1 championships. Wesleyan Christian Academy has the best winning percentage.

In Oregon, the Central Catholic Rams have been the team to beat - a .535 WPCT, 7 playoffs, and 5 championships.

The Woodlands Highlanders of the Texas University Interscholastic League have a .572 WPCT over 20 seasons.

In Wisconsin, both Peshtigo and Denmark are tops in winning percentage and playoffs, but Denmark has won more championships. The Ashwaubenon Jaguars have been to more playoffs but won fewer times than Denmark.

I'm trying to learn a little bit of R while playing with this league. Here's a graph of the ratings value in MLB by age - a quick look at aging. If I remember correctly from some real-life MLB aging studies, it is better to look at these values weighted by PA and normalized for overall career value since better players are more likely to stick around for longer - survivor bias? But I also remember that there was not a ton of difference once corrected.

A couple plots on catchers - the arm plot makes sense - catchers with a better arm tend to throw out more runners. The ability plot seems backwards - catchers with more ability have a higher catcher ERA?

When plotted just against rating at Catcher, it does seem to make some sense.

Here's a comparison of pitcher talent/actual ratings for fastballs and changeups. It does seem that the changeup is much more likely to fail.

At the beginning of a new decade, the top prospect list looks much different - neither was drafted in the first round.


Joey Arredondo is the top prospect - he was a scouting discovery by the White Sox in 1918 out of the Dominican Republic.


The top pitcher is Kendall Yarbrough, a 5th round draft pick by the Twins in 1917.
