Monday, May 13, Year II

I always have wondered why Friday the 13th is unlucky, but Monday the 13th is ignored. Seems like it ought to be a double whammy, to me.

We are in Milwaukee to face the Brewers for the first time this season. Last year, we lost the season series, 5-7. They lost 2 of 3 in Los Angeles over the weekend. They are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.42 runs per game (Portland is tied for 8th with 3.77). They are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.30 per game (Portland is back to #1 with 3.09).

Portland Beavers (23-12 .657 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Milwaukee Brewers (14-19 .424 7.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL East)

POR: Brian Hagans (26-R 2-1 2.45) Rookie vs. MIL: Ray Bankston (31-L 3-3 4.42)

Bankston is their #1 starter and currently leads the PCL in strikeouts. He was 3-0 against us last year.

Hagans has not won in his last 3 starts (0-1).

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: 2B Paul Bouvet (26-R .273-44-0-7-.724) NL MVP Gold Glove
2: SS Eddie Thomas (26-R .218-87-4-19-.634) Gold Glove
3: C Dave Benya (27-S .317-63-2-12-.876)
4: 1B Jeff Austin (30-R .228-123-5-17-.704)
5: 3B Larry Sinchak (31-R .313-32-0-2-.677)
6: RF Woody Griesbach (24-R .212-66-2-5-.622) Rookie
7: CF Jeff Schottler (25-R .174-121-3-9-.536) WS MVP
8: LF Tony Casarez (20-L .238-42-0-1-.557) Rookie
9: P Brian Hagans (26-R .364-11-0-0-.909) Rookie

MILWAUKEE
1: 3B Bill Valdez (30-R .323-130-0-8-.770)
2: 2B Tom Harriger (25-R .248-129-2-12-.671) All-Star
3: RF Larry Reichler (24-L .248-117-3-15-.702) Silver Slugger
4: 1B Don Duggan (26-L .313-112-5-16-.856)
5: CF Gene Belt (25-R .333-36-1-7-.970)
6: LF Pedro Perez (37-L .390-100-4-12-1.059) All-Star Free Agent from NY
7: C Bob Coyne (36-L .310-84-2-12-.958) All-Star
8: SS Dave Glinsky (34-L .144-90-1-9-.442) Free Agent from Denver
9: P Ray Bankston (31-R .250-20-0-3-.600)

That's a pretty scary looking lineup...

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Milwaukee County Stadium
Weather: 59 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 13 MPH wind blowing right to left.
Attendance: 19,527

Top of the First:
Paul Bouvet grounds out to short. Eddie Thomas strikes out. He cannot even hit lefties anymore... Dave Benya grounds a hit to left. Jeff Austin strikes out.

Bottom of the First:
Bill Valdez leads off by taking a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Tom Harriger strikes out! Larry Reichler lines out to left. Don Duggan grounds a hit to right and Valdez beats the throw to 3rd. Gene Belt strikes out!

Top of the Second:

Larry Sinchak leads us off with a double down the right field line. But the three young outfielders come up empty yet again...

Bottom of the Second:
Pedro Perez strikes out! Bob Coyne takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and Brian Hagans calls the trainer out.... dern, dern, dernnit! If he is out for the year, we are hurting... New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). Dave Glinsky grounds out to 1st, 3-1, and Coyne goes to 2nd. P Ray Bankston grounds a hit up the middle and Coyne scores.... 1 to 0, Brewers. Bill Valdez strikes out.

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Jeff Austin doubles to center and Larry Sinchak singles him home! 1 to 1. But now we are to the young outfielder section of the lineup, so nothing else good happens...

Bottom of the Sixth:
Tom Harriger leads off with a hit. With 1 out, Don Duggan singles and Harriger goes to 3rd. Bullpen is up. Gene Belt doubles and Harriger scores. 2 to 1, Brewers. Two lefties coming up, so we leave Dowdell in there, who says he is not gassed yet. Pedro Perez beats out an infield hit and Duggan scores. 3 to 1, Brewers. Perez gets caught stealing and Bob Coyne grounds out to short.

Top of the Seventh:

Woody Griesbach leads off with a walk and Jeff Schottler grounds a hit to right and Griesbach makes it to 3rd. Tony Casarez flies out to left and Griesbach scores without a throw. 3 to 2, Brewers. PH Tod Schreck (31-R) grounds out to 3rd and Schottler goes to 2nd. Paul Bouvet, our superstar, pops out to 2nd...

Bottom of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (27-R). Dave Glinsky, the .144 hitter, doubles to left center... Chapman used to be worth something... P Ray Bankston bunts Glinsky to 3rd, but Chapman fields the ball and makes a bad throw and Bankston is safe... Bill Valdez, who has struck out every time up today, lines a hit to center... 4 to 2, Brewers. Tom Harriger flies out to right and Woody Griesbach doubles Bankston off of 2nd! Larry Reichler flies out to deep center.

Top of the Eighth:
Jeff Austin ends the inning by getting picked off at 1st...

Top of the Ninth:
With 1 out, Woody Griesbach grounds a hit to center. New Pitcher: George Thomas (33-L), their closer. Why he is still their closer, is a mystery. Last year, he was 3-9 with 21 SV and a 4.65 ERA. This year, he is 1-2 with 5 SV and a 6.23 ERA. He had a win and a save against us last year and no losses and we are at the young outfielders section of the lineup, so he is probably safe... Jeff Schottler flies out to center. PH Dave Lesley (27-R) doubles to left, but now who can we hit for the pitcher? 5 lefties on the bench and no righties.... We go with Omar Flores (21-L), who hit .250 against lefties in the minors... He grounds out to 2nd...

Lost - 4 to 2

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
Milwaukee had 8 hits and made no errors

Brian Hagans went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, 2 walks and struck out 3.
LHP Mitch Dowdell (L 0-1) went 4.2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 5 hits and struck out 3. At bat, he was 1 for 2.
RHP Barry Chapman went 2 innings, allowed 1 run and 2 hits.

Ray Bankston (W 4-3) went 8.1 innings, gave us 2 runs, 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.
LHP George Thomas (SV 6) faced 3 batter and got 2 out and gave us 1 hit.

C Dave Benya had 2 hits and threw out the only runner who tried to steal. 1B Jeff Austin hit a double and scored a run. 3B Larry Sinchak had 2 hits with a double, stole a base and had an RBI. PH Dave Lesley hit a double.

Pepe's report on Brian Hagans is that he just has some tightness in his back and should be fine to make his next start. That is good news, but I do not like the implications to his manliness...

8: SS Dave Glinsky (34-L .151-93-1-9-.460)
9: P Tony Robles (24-R .167-12-0-1-.333)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Milwaukee County Stadium
Weather: 64 F, Overcast, with a 13 MPH wind blowing in from left.
Attendance: 17,187

Top of the First:
Paul Bouvet takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and then steals 2nd on the first pitch to Tom Borden. Borden strikes out looking... Dave Benya grounds out to 2nd and Bouvet goes to 3rd. Jeff Austin strikes out looking...

Bottom of the First:
Dave Mancini grounds out to 2nd. Tom Harriger lines a hit to right, that looked foul to my eyes... He gets thrown out trying to steal! I think that proves the ball was foul. Larry Reichler pops out to shallow left!

Top of the Third:
Jeff Schottler leads off with a double to right, out first hit of the game. P Angel Gaspar bunts him over to 3rd so that Paul Bouvet can knock him in. Bouvet pops up to shallow right, but Schottler risks it and is safe! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Top of the Fourth:
With 2 outs, Gordon Saunderson singles to right. Dave Lesley swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles over the center fielder's head and Saunderson scores from 1st! 2 to 0, Beavers! Omar Flores draws a 4 pitch walk, but Jeff Schottler grounds out to the pitcher.

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Larry Reichler draws a full count walk. Don Duggan and Gene Belt then hit back-to-back singles to load the bases up. The Bullpen is stirring. Bob Coyne flies out to fairly deep center and Reichler heads home. Schottler, with no chance to get the runner, heaves the ball to the plate and Duggan takes 3rd. 2 to 1, Beavers. 2 outs. Tony Wilson lines out to center!

Top of the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Tom Borden singles and steals 2nd. Dave Benya grounds a hit to center and Borden beats the throw to the plate! 3 to 1, Beavers!

Bottom of the Fifth:
We start off by walking a .150 hitter, Dave Glinsky... PH Bill Valdez then singles to right and Glinsky heads for 3rd. Gordon Saunderson throws the ball into the seats and Glinsky scores and Valdez gets 2nd base. 3 to 2, Beavers. The Bullpen is up again. Dave Mancini tries to bunt the runner to 3rd, but ends up with a hit instead.... He steals 2nd. Tom Harriger grounds a hit to left and Valdez scores to tie the game at 3 apiece... Still no outs and runners are at 1st and 3rd. Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (31-L). Larry Reichler strikes out. Harriger gets thrown out trying to steal 2nd! Don Duggan grounds out to 2nd!!!!

Top of the Sixth:
New Pitcher: Randy Canon (23-R). Gordon Saunderson grounds a hit to right. Dave Lesley hits a fly ball down the right field line, foul, but Larry Reichler drops it for an error. Given a second chance, Lesley strikes out... Omar Flores doubles to right center! Saunderson stops at 3rd. Jeff Schottler pops out to short... How did he become so useless? He hit decently last year as a rookie and tore the cover off the ball in the World Series. 3 home runs in one game! Now a .180 average in 128 AB.... PH Dennis Webb (25-L) grounds out to 2nd...

Top of the Seventh:
Paul Bouvet leads off with a walk and steals 2nd. They then walk Tom Borden intentionally, to get to, statistically, the best hitter on our team, Dave Benya. He doubles to left center! Bouvet scores! Borden rounds 3rd and heads home....the throw is cut off and they nail Benya trying to advance to 3rd, but Borden is in with a run! 5 to 3, Beavers! Jeff Austin doubles to right center! They walk Gordon Saunderson intentionally. Dave Lesley grounds into a 5-4-3 double play.

Top of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Steve Hendricks (35-R). Omar Flores leads off with a triple to right center! It seems we finally have one of the new guys hitting! Jeff Schottler is up and he is 1 for 31 with runners in scoring position... He grounds out to 3rd and Flores scores! 6 to 3, Beavers! 1 for 32 now.

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Jorge Reyna (32-L), who sucks against lefties. and who will face quite a few lefties and who has to finish the last two innings, come hell or high water... He strikes out Tom Harriger. The first lefty he faces, Larry Reichler, gets beaned... Don Duggan, the next lefty, flies out to center. Gene Belt, a righty, lines a hit to center... Bob Coyne, another lefty, strikes out!!

Top of the Ninth:
Dave Benya and Jeff Austin leads us off with a pair of singles. With 1 out, Dave Lesley singles to load the bases up. Omar Flores is up and I am regretting having mentioned that he might be hitting well lately... He grounds one to 1st, but Don Duggan boots it and Benya scores! 7 to 3, Beavers! Jeff Schottler grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Austin scores. 8 to 3, Beavers. 1 for 33... P Jorge Reyna grounds out to 3rd. Now can he not give up 5 runs in the Ninth?

He can!

Won - 8 to 3

First time we have scored more than 5 runs in 19 games!

We had 13 hits and made 1 error
Milwaukee had 7 hits and made 2 errors

Most hits we have had in a 9 inning game since April 9!

Angel Gaspar went 4+ innings, allowed 3 runs, 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2.
LHP Lou Hertzberg went 1 perfect inning, actually better than perfect, because he only faced 2 batters and struck one out.
RHP Don Schmidt (W 4-1) went 2 scoreless innings, walked 1 and struck out 1.
RHP Jorge Reyna (SV 2) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 HB and struck out 2.

Tony Robles went 5 innings, gave us 3 runs, 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.
RHP Randy Canon (L 0-1) went 2 innings, gave us 2 runs, 4 hits, 3 walks (2 INT) and struck out 1.

2B Paul Bouvet drew 2 walks, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. LF Tom Borden had a hit and an intentional walk, stole a base and scored 2 runs. C Dave Benya had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBI. He threw out 2 of 3 base stealers. 1B Jeff Austin had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. RF Gordon Saunderson had 2 hits and an intentional walk and scored a run. SS Dave Lesley had 2 hits with a double and an RBI. 3b Omar Flores hit a double and a triple, drew a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Jeff Schottler hit a double, scored a run and had 2 RBI. That's every hitter in the lineup getting a mention! Can't remember that ever happening before! PH Tony Casarez drew a walk.

Portland Beavers (24-13 .649 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Milwaukee Brewers (15-30 .429 8 GB in 4th place in the PCL East)

POR: Lonny Tomski (28-R 0-0 5.79) vs. MIL: Tom LaForce (30-R 1-3 5.00)

LaForce was 7-17 with a 4.96 ERA last year for Minnesota, leading the PCL in losses. We were 2-0 against him then, but he had a good game against us and a mediocre one. The Brewers liked what they saw, though, and went out and traded for him. He's given up 6 HR in 36 IP this year.

Tomski is making his 2nd start of the season for the Beavers. We beat Mike Nackley with him on the mound, so we will probably lose to this bum...

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: 2B Paul Bouvet (26-R .240-50-0-8-.659) NL MVP Gold Glove

9: P Lonny Tomski (28-R .500-2-0-0-1.000)

MILWAUKEE
1: 3B Bill Valdez (30-R .328-134-0-9-.781)
2: 2B Tom Harriger (25-R .255-137-2-13-.675) All-Star
3: RF Larry Reichler (24-L .236-123-3-15-.679) Silver Slugger

5: CF Gene Belt (25-R .341-44-1-8-.953)
6: LF Pedro Perez (37-L .385-104-4-13-1.043) All-Star
7: C Diego Cordova (29-R .192-26-1-5-.685)
8: SS Rick Wagner (28-S .308-13-1-2-.846)
9: P Tom LaForce (30-L .200-10-0-2-.400)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Milwaukee County Stadium
Weather: 64 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 13 MPH wind blowing right to left.
Attendance: 16,158

Top of the First:
Paul Bouvet lines out to center. Omar Flores doubles to center. He steals 3rd and C Diego Cordova throws the ball into left field and Flores scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Dave Benya strikes out. Jeff Austin draws a walk. He tries to steal, but they have a pitchout on and he is out.

Bottom of the First:
Bill Valdez swings at the first pitch and lines a hit over the shortstop. He steals 2nd. Tom Harriger squibs one in front of the plate and C Dave Benya throws him out and Valdez goes to 3rd. Larry Reichler swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to deep right and Valdez scores to tie the game at 1 all. Don Duggan flies out to center.

Top of the Third:
P Lonny Tomski leads off by reaching on a 2 base throwing error by SS Rick Wagner. Paul Bouvet grounds out to 3rd... Omar Flores lines a hit to center. He steals 2nd! Dave Benya lines out to left and Tomski beats the throw to the plate! 2 to 1, Beavers! Jeff Austin grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Third:

P Tom LaForce leads off with a hit to left. Bill Valdez grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and there is a collision between LaForce and 2B Paul Bouvet.... Bouvet has to leave the game... Great! Now we just gave away Perry Templet for nothing! Editor's Note: Bouvet had NO history of injuries before the trade... Eddie Thomas goes in to play short and Dave Lesley moves over to 2nd. Tom Harriger homers to right... 3 to 2, Brewers.

Through six innings, we have 2 hits off this bum...

Top of the Seventh:

We manage to load the bases up with 2 outs, but with Eddie Thomas at the plate instead of Paul Bouvet.....no runs...

Top of the Eighth:
With 1 out, Dave Benya triples to right! His hitting is one of our very few bright spots on offense and very, very unexpected. With the infield in, Jeff Austin grounds out to 2nd and Benya has to hold... 2 outs. Dave Lesley swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to center....

Top of the Ninth:

Tony Casarez lines one very hard, but right to the right fielder. Woody Griesbach draws a walk. New Pitcher: George Thomas (33-L), their beleaguered closer, who has been good enough against us. PH Jeff Schottler (25-R), batting .177 now, is sent up. He strikes out.... 2 outs. PH Larry Sinchak (31-R) grounds out to short.

Lost - 3 to 2

We had 5 hits and made 1 error
Milwaukee had 4 hits and made 3 errors

Lonny Tomski (L 0-1) went 6 innings, allowed 3 runs, 4 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he scored a run.
LHP Lou Hertzberg pitched 2 hitless innings and struck out 1.

Tom LaForce (W 2-3) went 8.1 innings, gave us 2 runs (1 earned), 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit.
LHP George Thomas (SV 7) faced 2 batters and got them both out with 1 strikeout.

3B Omar Flores had 2 hits with a double, stole 2 bases and scored a run. C Dave Benya hit a triple and had an RBI. Those two guys are the sum total of our offense right now.

Pepe reported that Paul Bouvet has a torn thumb ligament and will be out about two weeks....Super. He was only hitting .231 anyway, so it is not like we will miss that production....

We out 2B Paul Bouvet (26-R) on the Disabled List and sent CF Jeff Schottler (25-R) to Vancouver (AAA). 2B Tony Socorro (29-R) and CF Rollie Ferree (28-R) were called up. Neither has ever appeared in the Major Leagues before and neither is worthy of appearing here now...

We are in Dallas, Texas to play the Eagles a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 2 of 3 in Oakland. We swept them in three 1 run games last weekend in Portland. They are 4th in scoring in the PCL with 4.27 runs per game (Portland is 8th with 3.79). They have passed us for 1st place in fewest runs allowed again with 2.92 per game (Portland is 2nd with 3.11). Scoring is up this year in the National league, but down in the Pacific Coast League.

We are in Minneapolis to play the Twins a 3 games series. It is the first time we have faced them this season. Last year, we won the season series, 7-5. They just won 2 of 3 here vs Oakland and have won 8 of their last 10. They are 5th in the PCL in scoring with 4.02 runs per game (Portland is #8 with 3.71). They are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.39 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.15).

Portland Beavers (25-16 .610 1 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at

Borbon started the season 0-4, but has won his last 3 decisions. He did not pitch poorly to start the season, the Twins just would not score any runs for him. In his first 5 starts, they only scored 8 total runs. They signed him as a free agent from Baltimore this winter. We have never faced him. Our shortstop, Eddie Thomas, did face him last year when he was with Brooklyn, before we traded for him, and went 2 for 3.

Gaspar only went 4 innings in his last start and gave up 3 runs.

Besides, he does lead the team in RBI! He grounds into a force at home, 6-2. 2 outs. Now we have to pinch-hit for the pitcher: Gordon Saunderson (27-L). He grounds out to 3rd.... No runs and the game is still tied at 1 apiece.

Top of the Eighth:

With the infield in, Dave Lesley grounds out to 2nd. 2 outs. They walk Tony Casarez intentionally to get to Woody Griesbach, who grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Eighth:
Three lefties for Lou Hertzberg to face and they go down 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (27-R). PH Don Morse (27-L), batting .143 in 35 AB, flies out to left. PH John Ponterio (33-L), batting .353 with a HR in 17 AB, grounds one to 2nd, but Dave Lesley throws it away for a 2 base error.... PH Juan Rodriguez (34-L), batting .188 in 32 AB, lines a hit to right and Ponterio beats the throw to the plate... Rodriguez takes 2nd on the throw. Tie game... 2 to 2. Jerry Walker strikes out. 2 down. PH Gary Olson (27-R), their normal starter at 2nd, batting .337 in 163 AB, lines a 1-2 pitch to center and Rodriguez scores.... Chapman and Lesley both suck....

Pepe says I have to talk to the doctor about Brian Hagans.... Elbow tendinitis and it will take Hagans at least 2 months to recover....

Brian Hagans was placed on the Disabled List and SP David Shoemake (27-R) has been called up. Shoemake was 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 6 starts for Vancouver (AAA).

It has been 10 days since we sent Jeff Schottler to Vancouver and he has acquitted himself well there, so we are bringing him back. He'll switch places with the struggling Woody Griesbach. In 9 games for Vancouver, Schottler hit .300 with a 1.014 OPS. 7 XBH with 3 HR, 7 R and 8 RBI.

Milwaukee Brewers (21-23 .477 6.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (27-19 .587 1 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

MIL: Tom LaForce (30-R 2-3 3.78) vs. POR: Angel Gaspar (23-R 1-1 3.75) Rookie

LaForce beat us last week, holding us to 5 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) in 8.1 IP.

Gaspar only have up 1 run and 3 hits in 6 IP in his last start, but the time before that Milwaukee roughed him up.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 68 F, Overcast, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from right.
Attendance: 15,678

Top of the First:
Bill Valdez flies out to deep center. Tom Harriger fouls out to 1st. Larry Reichler doubles to center. Don Duggan swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd!

Bottom of the First:

Tom Borden pops out to short. Dennis Webb grounds out to 2nd. Omar Flores doubles to left. Jeff Austin grounds out to 2nd. Deja vu, all over again....

Bottom of the Fourth:
We get our second hit of the day when Dave Lesley doubles to right center with 1 out, but he gets doubled off base when Tony Casarez flies out to left...

Top of the Sixth:
With 2 outs, Larry Reichler homers to left.... 1 to 0, Brewers. Don Duggan follows with a 444 foot blast to center... 2 to 0, Brewers.

Bottom of the Sixth:
Tom Borden leads off with a 4 pitch walk and makes it to 3rd on a single to right by Dennis Webb, but hurts himself sliding.... Pinch-runner: Barry Tucker (29-L), who will stay in to play right. Omar Flores draws a walk to load the bases up with no outs. Jeff Austin flies out to center and Tucker scores without a throw. 2 to 1, Brewers. Dave Lesley flies out to right... If we only get the 1 run with the bases loaded and nobody out....well, I will figure that's just because we stink...it would be insanity, at this point, to expect more.... Tony Casarez grounds one to short, but Dave Glinsky boots it to load the bases back up for Jeff Schottler. He grounds out to 3rd....hard, but out...

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 1 out, PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L) doubles to right. Barry Tucker grounds one to short and Glinsky boots another one! 1st and 3rd, 1 out. New Pitcher: Randy Canon (23-R). Full count to Dennis Webb and, with Tucker on the move, he grounds out to 2nd and Saunderson scores to tie the game at 2! Omar Flores flies out to right.

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). Gordon Saunderson stays in the game to play right, the third player to be stationed there this game. With 2 outs, Tom Harriger grounds a hit past SS Eddie Thomas. Larry Reichler swings at a 3-1 pitch and pops out to short!

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Steve Hendricks (35-R). 5.68 ERA, but he has pitched a scoreless inning against us in this series. Jeff Austin gets us off to a good start with a strikeout... Dave Lesley grounds a hit to left center. Tony Casarez beats out an infield hit! Jeff Schottler swings at the first pitch and flies out to left.... That brings up Eddie Thomas and his .189 batting average... Hate to, but we pinch-hit with Larry Sinchak (31-R). He works the count full and then drives one to deep center, but it is caught....

Top of the Ninth:

Dave Lesley moves over to short and Tony Socorro (29-R) is in to play 2nd. We only have CF Rollie Ferree (28-R) and C Tod Schreck (31-R) left on the bench. Don Duggan leads off with a hit to right... Don Schmidt has pitched 12 scoreless innings in a row. It cannot go on forever, I guess... Gene Belt doubles to right and Duggan stops at 3rd. Call to the Bullpen: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). Pedro Perez flies out to right and Duggan holds at 3rd. 1 out. We walk a lefty intentionally... Bob Coyne is sent to 1st... ARGHHHH! PH Diego Cordova (29-R) is sent up. He's that backup catcher that hurt us before... Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Cordova strike out! 2 down. PH Jim Blinderman (25-L), 1 for 11 on the season (.091).... Reyna stinks against lefties, though.... There is no one else available in the pen... well, expect starter, Lonny Tomski, but he is not warmed up, anyway, and is no better against lefties than Reyna.... Blinderman swings at a 1-1 pitch and clears the bases with a double to left.... 5 to 2, Brewers.... I want my mommy...

Bottom of the Ninth:
The game fittingly ends with Rollie Ferree getting doubled off 2nd base on a 1 out fly ball to center.... down 3 runs and you take risks.... why have none of these players any brains?

Lost - 5 to 2

We had 7 hits and made no errors
Milwaukee had 9 hits and made 2 errors

Frank Martin went 7 innings, allowed 2 runs, 5 hits, 2 home runs, 1 walk and struck out 2.
RHP Don Schmidt (L 5-2) went 1 inning, allowed 2 runs and 3 hits.
LHP Mitch Dowdell faced 2 batters and retired one, allowed a run and a walk (INT).
RHP Jorge Reyna faced 3 batters and got 2 outs, allowed THE hit and struck out 1.

Charlie Gibson went 6.1 innings, gave us 2 runs (1 earned), 4 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he hit a double.
RHP Steve Hendricks (W 3-2) went 1 scoreless inning, gave us 2 hits and struck out 1.
LHP George Thomas (SV 11) pitched a scoreless 9th and gave us 1 hit. Now, 5 of his saves are against us.... The rest of the League has been ripping him apart....

PR/RF Barry Tucker scored a run. 3B Omar Flores hit a double and drew a walk. 2B/SS Dave Lesley had 2 hits with a double. PH/RF Gordon Saunderson hit a double and scored a run. PH Rollie Ferree had a hit, but pulled a boner...

Pepe says Tom Borden has blurred vision and, in his experience, it will take him 5 days to a week to have it clear up and for the headache to go away.

The Twins are in town to finish off this little home stand with a 2 game set. They just beat the Angels 3 of 4 in Los Angeles and beat us 2 of 3 in Minneapolis before that. They are 13-4 in their last 17 games. They are 7th in scoring in the PCL with 3.94 runs per game (Portland is down to #9 with 3.50). We have scored 2.96 per game since my big brilliant idea of Black Monday... The Twins are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.19 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.17). 3.19 since the trades. So, I at least did not ruin the pitching and defense... But I did not make it any better, either, and flat made the offense worse.... But I still believe these guys will start scoring runs before too long... And of course, the pitching is now worse with 2 of the guys I was counting in the stating rotation on the Disabled List....

Minnesota Twins (21-27 .438 9.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (27-21 .563 2 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

MIN: Dave Bishman (27-L 2-3 6.20 ERA) Rookie vs. POR: Lonny Tomski (28-R 0-2 4.60)

We beat Bishman last week by scoring 5 runs in 6.1 innings. And 5 runs for us is a LOT.

Tomski gave up 9 hits in 5 innings in his last start, which was against these Twins...

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome

The smallest crowd since I have been at Portland... The fans do not like our new look Beavers...

Top of the First:
Jamie Cutshall grounds out to 2nd. Gary Olson take a 3-2 pitch for strike three! Mike Francoeur grounds out to 1st, unassisted! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Eddie Thomas grounds out to 3rd. Dave Lesley swings at the first pitch and flies out to center. Dave Benya swings at the first pitch and lines out hard to right.

Bottom of the Third:
With 1 out, Tony Casarez hits his second home run of the season, a line drive over the right field fence! 1 to 0, Beavers! Both home runs have been off Bishman.

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Jamie Cutshall hit one 442 feet to center... Tie game: 1 to 1.

Bottom of the Seventh:
Jeff Austin leads off with a double to left. With 1 out, he steals 3rd! That makes them walk Jeff Schottler intentionally. Rollie Ferree grounds a hit to center and Austin scores and Schottler beats the throw to 3rd! 2 to 1, Beavers! Tony Casarez doubles to left center! 3 to 1, Beavers! PH Tod Schreck (31-R), 1 for 14 on the season, takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up. Eddie Thomas swings at the first pitch and bounces one back to the box, but they only get the force at home, 1-2. 2 outs. Dave Lesley takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three.... some day, we will bust a game open....

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Eddie Amos (36-L). Fireman Trophy winner last year in the PCL. Dave Benya leads off by legging out an infield hit, but comes up lame. Pinch-runner: Barry Tucker (29-L). With 1 out, Larry Sinchak grounds into a double play.

Top of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Barry Chapman (27-R), beginning his 2nd inning of work after a perfect 8th. Gary Olson takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. The game is Chapman's to win or lose... Mike Francoeur grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. Ray Calandra grounds into a 4-6-3 double play and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 3 to 1

Lonny Tomski becomes the first Beaver starting pitcher to win a game since May 4, other than Frank Martin!

We had 8 hits and made no errors
Minnesota had 5 hits and made no errors

Lonny Tomski (W 1-2) went 7 innings, allowed 1 run, 5 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Barry Chapman (SV 4 ) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 walk and struck out 2.

Dave Bishman (L 2-4) went 7 innings, gave us 3 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 1.

1B Jeff Austin hit a double, stole a base and scored a run. LF Tony Casarez hit a double and his 2nd home run of the year and had 2 RBI. PH Tod Schreck drew a walk.

Pepe reports that our best hitter, C Dave Benya, has pulled a back muscle and will be out 3 to 4 weeks....

Down on the Farm: The Vancouver Mounties (AAA) beat the Albuquerque Dukes, a Denver affiliate, 11 to 0, at home. Every player in the starting nine for Vancouver had a hit, except one: Woody Griesbach.... Even P Larry Smith, who only allowed 4 hits in a complete game shutout, got 4 hits with his bat, including a pair of doubles. He had 4 RBI. Woody might be in Vancouver for longer than 10 days...

C Dave Benya was put on the growing Disabled List and C Phil Parker (28-S) was recalled from Vancouver (AAA). That makes 5 players on the list now. Cross you fingers, because 2B Paul Bouvet (26-R) is reportedly healthy and scheduled to return to the team on Friday. And hopefully hit better than the .231 he has for us so far...

Minnesota Twins (21-28 .429 9.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (28-21 .571 1 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

Top of the First:
Jerry Walker swings at the first pitch and lines out to center. Gary Olson takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. He steals 2nd. Jamie Cutshall grounds out to 2nd and Olson goes to 3rd. Rick Ingledue grounds out to short!

Bottom of the First:
Omar Flores tries to bunt and whiffs on it, so swings away next time and grounds out to short. Dennis Webb grounds out to 2nd. The Twins' outfield is very lousy defensively this game, so of course we will not hit any balls out of the infield.... Tony Casarez swings a t a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Second:

Jeff Austin leads off by grounding a hit past the shortstop, stealing 2nd an going to 3rd when Gordon Saunderson grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Dave Lesley takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Jeff Schottler grounds into a 5-4-3 double play.... Only the second GDP of the year for him.... Someone has put a curse on us...

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Jamie Cutshall doubles to left and with 2 outs, Aubrey Roy doubles to right. 1 to 0, Twins.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Jeff Schottler leads off with a double to left center. He steals 3rd! Eddie Thomas flies out to left and Schottler beats the throw to tie the game at 1!

Top of the Seventh:
With 2 outs, Billy Allen singles and then goes to 3rd on a double to right center by Steve Church. They let P Jose Nieves bat, who has a hit today and is now batting .400 lifetime against Panighetti.... He grounds one hard, but SS Eddie Thomas makes the play!!!

Top of the Eighth:
They go down in order!

Bottom of the Eighth:

Eddie Thomas takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4! I want to leave Panighetti in the game to bunt, but he stinks at bunting, so Rollie Ferree (28-R) is sent up to do the deed. But instead, Eddie Thomas tries to steal and they throw him out with a pitchout called... Ferree is left in there, because there is no great hitter on the bench and he grounds out to 3rd. Omar Flores flies out to left....

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (25-L) to face one batter, Rick Ingledue. He flies out to center. New pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). PH Mike Francoeur (26-L), their All-Star center fielder, is sent up. He grounds out to the pitcher! Jim Thut fouls one to the left side that 3B Omar Flores drops for an error... Thut then strikes out!

Bottom of the Ninth:

Dennis Webb leads off with a double to right center! Pinch-runner: Phil Parker (28-S). New Pitcher: Art William (33-R), their closer. 1.99 ERA. He had a win and a save against us in the last series we played with them. Juan Rodriguez (34-L) comes in to play left in a double switch. Tony Casarez grounds out to the pitcher, but Parker makes it to 3rd. Can Jeff Austin make contact? No, he cannot... strike three... 2 outs. They walk Gordon Saunderson intentionally to get to Dave Lesley, who grounds out to short.

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
Phil Parker stays in to catch. Billy Allen sends one to deep right, but it is caught on the warning track. PH John Ponterio (33-L), .286 with 1 HR in 21 AB, is sent up. He strikes out! Juan Rodriguez grounds out to short!

Bottom of the Tenth:
With 2 outs, we let P Don Schmidt make the 3rd out.

Top of the Eleventh:
Top of their order goes down in order!

Bottom of the Eleventh:
New Pitcher: Lyle DeLeo (31-L) 1.94 ERA. With 1 out, Phil Parker singles to left and gets thrown out by another pitchout.... Tony Casarez strikes out.

Top of the Twelfth:

Down they go, 1-2-3! The Twins' bench is now empty.

Bottom of the Twelfth:

New Pitcher: Eddie Amos (36-L), the Fireman Trophy winner in the PCL last year. Jeff Austin leads off with a liner to short center for a hit. Another pitchout? Larry Sinchak (31-R) is sent in to pinch-hit for Gordon Saunderson. With Austin on the move, he swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 3rd. Austin goes to 2nd. Dave Lesley grounds a ball up the middle and it gets through and Austin heads home... the throw....the tag....the call.... Safe! And THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Friday, May 31, Year II

2B Paul Bouvet (26R) was activated from the Disabled List and 2B Tony Socorro (29-R) was sent back to Vancouver (AAA).

We are in San Diego to play 3 games for 1st place in the PCL West. We come into the series 3 percentage points ahead of them. They just suffered a sweep of 3 games in Denver and had lost 5 of their last 6 after winning 10 of 11 before that. It's been 6 weeks since we swept them in 3 games in Portland, April 15-17. The Padres are 5th in the PCL in scoring with 4.13 runs per game (Portland is down to #10 with 3.46). Do you remember when we were leading the League in HR with 16 after 16 games? We have had 14 in the last 34 games and are now 10th. They are 5th in fewest runs allowed with 3.73 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.08).

Portland Beavers (29-21 .580 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (30-22 .577 0 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

POR: Angel Gaspar (23-R 1-2 3.48 ERA) Rookie vs. SD: Javier Reyna (33-R 5-4 3.01)

We scored 5 runs against Reyna and beat him back in April

Gaspar has allowed 3 total runs and 8 hits in his last 2 starts, but is 0-1.

Bob Welch flies out to deep center and Campbell scores to tie the game at 3 all. Ryan takes 3rd. Roger Rojas flies out to left. What an inning.... 3 runs and 1 hit....

Top of the Third:

With 1 out, Omar Flores grounds a hit up the middle and steals 2nd. Jeff Austin grounds one to short, by Lute Campbell bounces his throw in the dirt for an error and we have runners at 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Austin steals 2nd. Gordon Saunderson loops a hit to right and Flores scores! 4 to 3, Beavers! Dave Lesley grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Austin scores and Saunderson goes to 2nd. 5 to 3, Beavers! Tony Casarez works the count full and flies out to left.

Bottom of the Fourth:

Dave Miller walks on 4 pitches to lead off the inning, the 4th walk by Angel Gaspar already. Lute Campbell strikes out and P Javier Reyna bunts one foul with 2 strikes for out #2. Hal Baumgardner lines a hit to center. Bob Welch knocks an 0-2 pitch into the right field corner for a 2 run triple and the game is tied at 5 apiece.... The Bullpen is back up. Full count to Roger Rojas and he flies out to shallow center. 83 pitches through 4 for Angel Gaspar.

Top of the Fifth:
We hit 3 balls very hard, but make 3 outs.

Bottom of the Fifth:
New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). He gets two outs off lefties, but the first righty he faces, Lee Dukes, doubles down the left field line. A lefty up now, in Dave Miller. Another wild pitch and the runner is at 3rd. Full count, and Miller swings and flies out to deep center.

Bottom of the Seventh:

Top of the Eighth:

It's our 3-4-5 hitters' turn. They go down 1-2-3....

Bottom of the Eighth:
Lee Dukes leads off by taking a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and the .225 hitter is on base for the third time this game. PH Butch Nelson (26-R), batting .231 but with 4 HR in 104 AB, flies out to right. Lute Campbell grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Don Hook (31-R), their closer. 3-1 with 12 SV and a 1.08 ERA. That one loss was against us in Portland back in April. With 1 out, Tony Casarez swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles to left! Top of the Eleventh:
New Pitcher: Buddy Werner (36-L), pitching with a pulled stomach muscle. 2.13 ERA. PH Rollie Ferree (28-R) is sent up for Gordon Saunderson. He draws a walk! With 1 out, he gets caught stealing. Tony Casarez beats out an infield hit. Jeff Schottler sends one deep to center, but it is caught on the warning track...

Rollie Ferree stays in to play right. Lee Dukes, that .225 hitter, who has been on base 3 times is up. He swings at a 2-2 pitch and fouls it off.... another and he fouls it off.... another and he lines a home run to left....
