A Whole New Ballgame - brand-new historical league

A Whole New Ballgame is set in the 1990s, beginning with the 1993 season.

’93 was a big season for baseball –
  • Four future Hall-of-Famers played their last season (Carlton Fisk, Robin Yount, Nolan Ryan and George Brett)
  • Two new clubs joined the National League (Florida and Colorado)
  • It was the 25th and final season of the two division format

But the biggest change (and the reason for the end of the two division format) was that the owners had forced out Fay Vincent as commissioner in September of 1992. The owners felt Vincent had betrayed them when talking about collusion and that he generally felt he was not answerable to them. And with labor discussions on the horizon, they wanted him out.

So instead of seeking another commissioner from outside of baseball, the owners replaced Vincent with one of their own as Milwaukee owner Bud Selig was named interim commissioner. That interim tag eventually was removed and Selig would reign for two decades and usher in more changes to the structure of MLB than any of his predecessors.

AWNB will be history with a twist - we'll stick with the two division format, no wild cards and no interleague play. The 1998 expansion might - or might not - happen and even if it does, the Brewers stay in the AL.

If you're interested in joining this brand-new league, please let me know via PM here on the boards or by using the 'Info' link on the website at http://simsportleagues.com.

A rundown on some of the basics on the league for those who want more info:

I've been building this thing for months and have
  • Real contract info for all players
  • Real coaches (as best as I could find) for all teams including the minors
  • Real owners
  • Entered career history entries for many of the players (largely the transaction stuff - FA signings, trades, draft info)
  • A complete Japanese league (see below)

A note on Japan - I do have a complete 1993 *** built. I have it as a template and it has not currently been added to the league. I will probably let the GMs weigh in on whether to add it.

Right now the following teams have already been claimed:
AL: Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New York, Seattle, Texas, Toronto
NL: Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Colorado, Florida, Houston, Montreal, New York, San Diego, St. Louis

We will use Slack for most communication, although I do have a forum as well on my site.

Sims will be 7 days in length and we will sim Monday thru Friday probably in the mornings. Coaches are on, scouts are off. I will answer any questions you might have about specific settings, but the general thrust will be to emulate as closely as we can the 1993 MLB rules.

Thanks (and apologies for the long post)!

15 teams have been claimed. Still some good (or at least intriguing) teams out there:

AL: California, Chicago, Detroit, KC, Oakland and Toronto
NL: Chicago, Cincy, LA, Philly, Pittsburgh and SF

Both AL division winners (Chisox and World Champ Toronto) and the NL East champ Phillies are all still available plus a 103-win Giants team and a Dodgers team that has both a young Piazza and a young Pedro Martinez to build around (just don't deal him to Montreal for Delino DeShields!).

There's talent all over the place:
  • The Angels have Tim Salmon plus both Jim Edmonds and Troy Percival on the farm
  • Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell may be getting long in the tooth, but the Tigers also have Travis Fryman plus farm hands Bobby Higginson, Tony Clark and Lima Time himself
  • KC has Brett for more one rodeo plus a farm that includes Mike Sweeney, Johnny Damon and Jon Lieber
  • Oakland has one remaining Bash Brother, plus a pair of HOFers in Rickey and Eck. And there's Giambi on the farm too.
  • The Cubbies have a solid infield with Grace, Sandberg and Buechele plus Sammy Sosa in the OF. The farm is pretty bare though - this is a good one for a rebuild-minded GM
  • Cincy has in their prime Rijo & Larkin plus the big bat of Kevin Mitchell and a young Reggie Sanders. The farm is thin here too - Eric Owens and Pokey Reese head up a humdrum group.
  • The Pirates? Well, yeah most of the cupboard has been picked clean. Jay Bell and Andy Van Slyke are the lone reminders of the recent glory days. The farm includes both Jason Kendall and Denny Neagle.

Thanks for signing up. I'll need some info to get you setup (you can send it to me via PM):

Email address (for Slack & in-game GM)
Username (for league forum)
First & Last (for in-game GM)

We are using the 2-8 scale of ratings and recalc is off (we use the in-game dev engine to keep things interesting).

We do use Facegen.

I will put up HTML reports sometime this coming week. I'm still tinkering with stuff (adding histories, double-checking rosters, etc).

We will start with MLB rosters as of 2/27/93 - prior to spring training and before many signings and trades that are already done when you start a 1993 game in OOTP.

I'd be interested. Been quite awhile since I have played an online league here though, so may be rusty, but I have played the game offline for several years.
I'll try LA if they are open, if not, give me my Pirates and i'll suffer through years of misery just like in real life..lol

If the poster above me doesn't take Pittsburgh, I'll take them. Otherwise I'll give the California Angels a shot.

Interested

I am new to OOTP, but I have been doing online hockey leagues for well over 20 years using APBA. I would be interested as long as you have patience for a new guy with stupid questions about using the simulator, and what you need from me....

I would take the Cubs or the A's (in that order) if they are still left. I love the idea of playing back in time.

Thanks to everyone who checked us out and those who've signed up.

We're now full. It's likely the league will expand in 1998, and possibly not just by two teams, plus as with any new league I expect there will be some turnover in GMs.

So if you're still interested in being a part of AWNB, please feel free to let me know and I will notify you when a spot becomes available.

Thanks again!
