I don't have a problem with saves as a stat, I just think that saves aren't very important. But I don't want to turn this into a thread about the value of saves. I'll just leave you with this: if you were a GM and you had a pitcher like John Smoltz coming up in your minor-league system, would you turn him into a reliever or a starter? The answer to that question might give you some insight into the value of a reliever versus that of a starter.

Saves are important. A good 9th inning shut down guy will she his work by his saves, ERA K heck the occasional relief win. His stats are just as important as a starting pitcher's
