Who woulda thunk it? Ruth, Koufax and Hornsby and....

Who woulda thunk it? Ruth, Koufax and Hornsby and....
I have been running a random debut league for 19 seasons now, using 1986 as the perpetual historical year - you can find a running account of it in another thread.

But I decided to also create a second league with the same idea - 3 year recalc, random debut, starting in 1901 but this time with 1989 as the historical year, just to reduce the frequency of home runs, and lower the overall offense a bit to see how the results compared.

I simmed the first season - I go one week at a time managing one team, adjusting rosters and lineups each week based on how my players are doing.

At the end of the first season, there was a strange, strange result:

One team, not mine, but the Milwaukee Brewers had Babe Ruth, Rogers Hornsby, AND Sandy Koufax.

They also had some other good players - Billy O'Dell, Jason Vargas and Mark Langford joined Koufax in the rotation, BJ Surhoff and Ken Oberkfell for example in the line up.

Ruth, age 36 batted .335 with 35 home runs. Hornsby hit .300 with 30 homers. Koufax won the Cy Young Award.

And....

wait for it...

wait for it...

Milwaukee finished 73-81 and in 6th place.

HUH?

Who woulda thunk it, as Dizzy Dean used to say !

My team came in last, but our best player the first season was Yaz, very, very good, not Babe Ruth though. Strange, no?

Damn. That’s pretty shocking, even if it is older Ruth. What was the rest of the Brewers starting lineup and rotation?
