thank you so much for this. I use another article when arguing the injury setting but this goes much more in detail

Yes, and it will be very useful for settling injury setting arguments.

If you read the article, it looks like that trend started when the MLB "fixed" the shoulder injury problem.
Possible explanations include that the pitcher's arms were just going to go out anyway - whether at the shoulder or the elbow - or that reducing shoulder injuries allowed pictures to pitch past the previous shoulder injury point and thus be able to reach the point where they tear their elbows up. I find the whole subject to be just fascinating. But then I'm the OOTP pitcher injury king.

If you watched those slow-mo replays of Bumgarner, there's no way any human being can do that to their arm forever and not have an injury. I can't speak for older video, but I can't help but wonder if the drive to get an edge over your peers is leading many to adjust their arm movements--which in turn throws the elbow into bad ways.
I did notice a lot of interesting data there--like, "Don't be a Texas Ranger in 2014" --but that one just really struck me, as I think that's the same point as the rise in Tommy Johns, no? |
