If you have played 24 games and you only have 4 stolen bases, should you be concerned by your lack of team speed? What if this plodding team is scoring 6 runs per game?

Austin Express P429 21-4

Last season ended in a whimper to the Orlando Calrissians, and we are entering this season with no changes to the team. Cy Young had a fabulous season last year winning Cy Young and MVP, and has picked up where he left off with a 5-0 record and a 1.14 ERA, with 2 walks and 43 K's in his first 39 IP. The Express were put into the NC East, we are the only team in the NC with a prior PL Championship, but the Coney Island Warriors are in the division, and they look primed to challenge. The AC Features 5 time Champion Tassie Thunder in the AC West, and two time Champion Hong Kong Tiger in the AC East (who I last saw my first season in Perfect, where they won the division, and we went to game 163, which I lost and kept me out of the playoffs in third place in the division with 102 wins.). The AC Central though has perhaps the best early division fight with the Peninsula Whips, Midland Rockhounds and NJ Rasslers all within a couple games of one another.

Tombstone Glory G317 18-7

If the Express went out with a whimper in the series last year, the Glory suffered even more. With a 92-70 record, they had the best record in the AC, and were 1 game behind the best record overall, three cheers for parity? In the first round of the playoffs, we could not close out a 2-0 lead, and lost 3-2, and were sent back for another round in Gold, which is fine by me.

Today's release of Cub missions could not have come at a better time. I needed to buy a couple of cards, but for under 30k, I was able to complete all the missions (since I had most of the cards anyhow) and got some much needed help. Frank Chance takes over 1B, with Heine Zimmerman moving to DH (it's juvenile, I know, but I still laugh every time I say or type Heinie). The new Ernie Banks is a godsend with his 90 defense at SS with a decent bat as well. The new Sammy Sosa replaces the old Sammy, and we should get a little more pop. I'm also going to give Jack Taylor a shot in the rotation. The Cubs do have a ton of low-mid diamond and some solid gold pitchers, more than I can fill the staff with, but last year the back half of the rotation (Maddux, Jenkins, and Vaughn/Rush/Passeau) fell apart, and only Prior and Arrieta had solid seasons.

Off to a better start this year, the biggest change was park factors. The Cubs have a ton of right-handed hitters, so it was time to use home field advantage, and slant the park towards right handed hitters, while at the same time making it much harder for lefty's to play well. (Sorry Billy Williams.)

Dallas Renegades P434 20-5 -The Wife

The Renegades suffered a loss in the ACS last year, and unfortunately I don't remember a ton more, because she didn't check much during the playoffs. Apparently Mickey Mantle won his first MVP award though.

Her league features some multiple time champions. In the AC East, the 4 time Champion DC Senators reside. The AC Central seems to be reserved for So-Cal Teams, with the 6 Time Champion Long Beach-Compton Anarcho-Syndicalists at the top of the heap. Curiously the Los Angeles Trolley Dodgers and the Long Beach Schooners are there as well. The Great Lake Loons and their left-handedness are in the AC West. The NC Central features the 3 time Champion Bludhaven Robins and the two time Champion Acton Avalanche. Fortunately the wife is in the AC East, and while a good division, doesn't have the the multiple champions in there putting pressure on.

She's hoping for some improved pitching (high BABIP last year) will result from a fully trained Luke Appling at 2B this year, and for the first part of the season, it is looking good.

Paragon City Heroes had agood start but rough end to the month a 5 game losing streak and getting hammered in the last two games of the sim leaves us 13-13. Our offence and starting rotation have been good enough but our bullpen has been horrendous, obviously that's something we need to rectify but simply haven't got the PP at present

Bad News Bulldogs are 14-13 and once again the bullpen is stinking things up. I also opened 50 packs and got very little return

Neuman Furshlugginers are 11-15 despite hot bats due to the starting rotation struggling and bizarrely the a defence that was rock solid for the last 2 years has completely collapsed despite no changes being made. Gregg Jefferies picked up Batter of the Month, just going to stick with it and hope the starters rebound

If I had a team that scored six runs per game, I wouldn't care if they had locked a thousand orphans into giant hamster wheels to generate the power for that offense.

The Raccoons went 2-8 vs the Westvleteren XII and were outscored 48-20. Against the rest of the league we went 14-3. I don't see how we can do much for the foreseeable future to compete against teams like this. Nevertheless, assuming we can win the WC game, we'll meet them in the division round and since it's only 5 games, we at least have a respectable chance since our ace Schilling will get up to 2 starts. But we really need one more great pitcher like Schilling to compete. Anyone want to sell perfect Young for 100k?

The 'Glou are in P436 this season. In our division the Nashville Bats have got off to a 17-9 start but I don't think they'll sustain that pace. The team I think will be the strongest is the Los Angeles Earthquakes (they're the only team in our division with a consistently better than .500 record in perfect across the last 4 seasons, with 3 playoff appearances and 95 wins last season). However, they're currently in last place, 11-16.

We're 15-12 thanks to a pitching/defense that's punching way above their weight. Can't see that continuing but our offense has a been a little bit slow to start the season, so if they kick into gear we might be able to keep the roll on.

Heilmann has started off the season hot, though, slashing .322/.413/.589 with 15 XBH out of 29 hits. Tony Perez must've heard my talk of replacing him because he's also raking, his wRC+ 155, with 7 homers.

Sam Tuivailala seems to like being middle relief instead of setup. He's yet to allow an earned run in 13.1 innings of work, conceding only 6 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 20.

This sounds really familiar.

Good luck! I will be hosting your team later this morning. Your defense is pretty good up the middle, which has to help your pitching.

My Crayons are in your Heroes' division. My team is probably not ready for Perfect yet, but it seems like a league without too much crazy talent so it's going OK.

you seem to be going fine so far. Our run scoring is down a bit, a couple of key players are down a bit from what is expected, and I have hopefully rectified some of the bullpen problems after a few things sold, though Hippo Vaughn may not be much of a fix to the back end of the rotation if his first outing is any guide.

The Accountants are in first, the Rebs are reasonably close, and the Raccoons are in third place and 16 1/2 games out on May 9.

Well, you swept us, in what was part of an 11-game skid for the 'Glou

We're now 17-22, our offense still not firing many shots, and our pitching reverting to the mean.

The Raccoons are only 2.5 behind Westvleteren and have 2 games against them coming right up so I expect us to be 4.5 back right after those 2 games. Against others, they've not been doing so well lately. I've never seen a team as good as them lose 7 of 10 before (against non-whales), but somehow that's what happened.

Equally odd is that our RDiff is higher than their RDiff (we're 1st in R and they're only 7th) and we have the best Pyt record in the league right now. Maybe they are more beatable than I thought, but we were just unlucky? We'll see. Regardless, with their pitching, I still don't see how we can keep pace with them. But it would be nice to catch them, if only for a day.

p.s. - Well, what do you know. We beat them in the 1st game 2-1. How is it that other teams that can't score as much as we can are scoring much more when they play them? Oh yeah, it's called luck.

p.p.s. - I swear, we just can't hit their pitching. We got only 2 hits off of them this time (and only 5 in the previous game)... But that was enough for another 2-1 victory so now we're only 1/2 back. In both wins we scored both our runs in the 1st inning off their LHP SPs, but couldn't touch their mighty perfect pen.

IRON .109

Holy crap!!! What can I say??!!! Is 3rd time a charm?

The Dayton Lawmen are firing on all 12 cylinders!

Currently sitting at 33-14 in only their 3rd year in existence; having made the playoffs in their first 2 seasons. Theo Epstein is already on the phone with this young manager.

But hold your horses Lawmen fans....even though we sport the best record in baseball; the second place team is only 2 games back in the standings. This is shaping up to be a season to remember in IRON .109.

I must add, the Lawmen won their last game 30-2...yes, you read that correctly. Newly acquired Ohtani hit 3 HR in the game. Over 13K PP was earned in this one game alone.

Keep it rolling Lawmen!!!!

P408: One-Third Complete

Not surprisingly, the Collingwood Magpies and Singapore Sluggers are 1-2 in the entire P408 in run differential and winning %. Collingwood maintains a slim lead over the Sluggers in the NC Central, who will have to console themselves with the knowledge that they had separate winning streaks of 11 and 7 games during a 21-5 May. Impressively, the Sunset Town Kings have not only survived but thrived in the division, as they are tied for the fourth best record in the NC and currently occupy the second Wild Card spot.

In the AC, the standout team so far is the Excelsior Dodgers, who pace the AC in run differential (+111) and the AC Central by 2 games over 4-time Perfect champion New Image Blaze. Huntley, meanwhile, shook off a lackluster 9-9 start to May by ripping off a 7-game winning streak to finish the month with a 4-game lead over the current second Wild Card Humongous Melonheads. The Red Raiders are having surprising struggles against right-handed starters, with an 18-14 record weighed down by fully two-thirds of its vs-R lineup currently sporting OPS+'s below 100. Fortunately, the team has had no such troubles against southpaws, battering lefty starters to a 16-3 record (!).

Standings through May...

Well, May was a disaster, thanks to the 11-game losing streak. But we played slightly above .500 for the rest of the month to work our way back to 26-29.

Trout has been pretty sub-par for the first 2 months. He's hitting .224/.341/.344, with only 4 homers.

We're 5 1/2 games back in the division, in 4th place. The LA Earthquakes (27-28) are yet to really get shaking while the Nashville Bats and St. Louis Stars (both 30-22) are due to go sliding.

The Durham Devil Dogs, in last place in our div at 20-33, are an odd team. In 2041 they went 96-66 at perfect level but have gotten worse each season since then, going 77-85 last season. They've got a decent roster, with 6 perfects (though 5 of them are live perfects) in their top 25, 4 of those hitters, but for whatever reason they struggle to score runs. I hope they keep struggling for the rest of this season too, and work it out next week!

All of my teams are under .500, Bob Gibson is 1-4 with a 2.56 ERA, that's about the level of luck of all 3 franchises.

Didn't do a beginning of season post for various reasons. So here's a 1/3 of the way post instead.

The focus team this week is the South Side Lumber Company (G306, 29-26, 2nd place, 4 1/2 GB) who rode a 50% chance of making the playoffs last September all the way to a Silver League title. They are off to a good start in Gold, as well. The franchise scored its 1500th win on April 18, which was good for 400 points. We are now just one player away from obtaining 99 Luke Appling and 100 Ed Walsh. I'm trying hard not to buy 90 Luke Appling and locking him just to get 99 Appling - I'm holding out for Ted Lyons or Shoeless Joe.

Once again the Cincinnati Redlegs (P420, 18-37, 5th place, 18 1/2 GB) managed to get hot in September and avoid relegation, and so will spin their wheels in Perfect for the 4th straight season. The awful start to the season all but guarantees relegation. I'm not sad about that. We are a much better team in Diamond, anyway. We'll just try to save up our money to buy Ewell "The Whip" Blackwell.

The other OL team, the newly-rebranded Reno Silver Sox (S327, 28-25, 3rd place, 2 1/2 GB) had a great plan - some quick back-of-the-envelope calcuations showed that "The Fastest" mission had a great +EV potential. Over a few days, we picked up seven cards. Then the Oakland missions dropped on Monday and blew that all to hell. On the field, the Silver Sox are acting just like they did last season - quick start in April, stinker of a May. Expect them to recover in June and July before crapping the bed in August and falling out of the playoffs in September. But we did beat some poor non-OL saps by a 16-0 score on April 27 and 86 OVR Dick Allen had a 10-game RBI streak that netted us a cool 1,000 PP.

(Ed. note: While writing this post, I noticed the Sox had a leftover pack from another mission, so I opened it. It netted a 69 Tony Gwynn. Which would have been nice, except the Sox already have 69 Tony Gwynn.)

Over in Bronze, the Everett Aquasox (B268, 38-14, 1st place, +6 1/2) are dominating the competition. No one player is really standing out, although Edgar Martinez won POTM for May, Marco Gonzalez is 7-2 with a 2.48 ERA, and, surprisingly, Ichiro is actually 2nd in batting with a .341 average. Will Jacksonville's Willie McGee be the player to end Ichiro's four-year batting title streak?

Meanwhile, the Thetford Mines Mineurs (B267, 36-18, 1st place, +3) would love for someone to make a mistake and post either Diamond Vlad Guerrero or Diamond Pedro Martinez really cheaply so we can go ahead and finish off this Expos mission. Joe Hesketh has been pretty awesome for the Mineurs. He went 11-1 last year in 16 starts, and was POTM for May this season. John Hiller's ERA is so small (0.45) you need a microscope to see it. Only a 5-game losing streak from May 22 to May 26 has kept this division as competitive as it is.

The third bronze team, the Nashville Game Theories (B213, 25-27, 3rd place, 8 1/2 GB) have an interesting little side project going. In addition to points generation (up to 76K+ so far) I decided to take the 2,500PP I got last year for one oddball accomplishment (I think it was Hi-Def inning? Definitely a pitching one) and see how many collections I can complete with it. So far, I have spent 173 points of the 2,500 and earned 4 packs. I'm focusing on missions with pack rewards for now.

The Charlotte Monarchs (S299, 32-22, 2nd place, 2 GB) pulled two gold cards out of their weekly pack haul (8 packs this week). Unfortunately, both were first baseman (Pete Alonso and Anthony Rizzo). Even more unfortunate, the Monarchs already had Matt Olson at first base and Nelson Cruz at DH. So taking a page from the 1940 Detroit Tigers playbook, please welcome our new left fielder, Pete Alonso. I'm sure this will all work out fine.

I'm not sure how the Baltimore Orioles (G305, 26-29, 2nd place, 11 1/2 GB) do it, but here they are, still in Gold, with G.H. Ruth continuing to dog it. At this point, I'd be better off dropping the Babe and picking up Michael Lorenzen. The Orioles become the second of my teams to get screwed by the new Athletics missions, as Lefty Grove became really cost prohibitive. Time to try and find another former minor league Oriole Hall-of-Fame pitcher.

However, it's not all bad. The franchise also recorded its 1,500th victory, this time on May 14. And on April 12, Grayson Rodriguez, who has consistently been one of the better pitchers, threw a no-hitter, the first in franchise history.

Oh, the Rottnest Island Quokkas (G353, 27-27, 3rd place, 3 1/2 GB). Did you know that the mini-marsupial, when faced with danger, has been known to throw its offspring at the predator so that it can make a getaway? I would like to throw the entire Quokka pitching staff at some predators. Instead, I tried getting rid of Wes Ferrell at the height of Collection Mania. Didn't work. It astonishes me that this team actually has two of my seven PT titles, including one at this very level they have been so mediocre at for the past three seasons. Not only that, our closer just got popped IRL on child porn charges. Swell.

Finally, you may have noticed that I mention my son's team, and that makes ten teams. What about the other two, you ask? Well, of course there's two more. It's just that I haven't mentioned them because I have been hoarding cards for future collections. But the cat's out of the bag on one team, now. Say hello to the Forest City Tribe (G333, 31-23, 1st place, +1/2). We started out with seven of nine missions complete, and have since acquired Tris Speaker for the eighth mission. However, I haven't submitted the 1948 mission yet because I'm not sure I want to lock 88 OVR Lou Boudreau, who has been our player-manager since the team's inception. So we might still need to get two cards.

As far as the season goes, we have been in a real back-and-forth battle with VCU Rams, and are currently just ahead. Our standout player has easily been SE Bob Lemon, 8-2 with a 1.83 ERA. Because he's a peak card, I've activated his two-way player status and am going to give him some reps in right field as well. We did have a 12-game winning streak, which was awesome.

And if you have a cheap Jose Ramirez or Corey Kluber historical to sell, hit me up.

The Colonels are playing well (42-11) and all of the changes that I made over the past few days are paying dividends. I have a winning record against every team in the league, which is my metric to measure improvement in head-to-head play against the better teams.

Newcomer Luke Appling has been amazing! His .413 OBP leads the team and he is really consistent. The defense has suffered while he trained at 2B but he is now rated at 61 there and should be average or better from here on. Appling and Boggs batting 1-2 have scored 44 and 41 runs, respectively, with both ranking in the top 10 for the entire league.

Rizzuto is turning in a 3-4 WAR season so far, so he is playing at about 75% of Wagner's level for 10% of the money. If it were not for the speed, Rizzuto would be generating about the same WAR as Wagner did, although more from defense than offense. It is clear that I am losing run differential at this position but I was able to use the points from selling Wagner to improve my run prevention - hopefully gaining runs overall.

The pitching staff has changed quite a bit in the past two days. I had a pile of points saved to buy a front-line pitcher and the opportunity came Monday. Several great cards were auctioned with no BIN and I was able to obtain perfect Walter Johnson in the wee hours for 400K. I then used the funds from Wagner to buy perfect Pedro, whose price has come down a bit recently. So, added to the perfect Cy Young and Schilling that I already had, I can now run out the "whale rotation" for a playoff series or head-to-head matchup with a division leader. I sold my 99 Walter and put those funds toward a perfect Lee Smith to go with Gagne and Sutter at the back of the bullpen. Maybe now I can hold those late-inning leads.

Today will be the first time that I will see this revised staff completely in action, and I am still sorting out what to do with the rest of the spots. Tim Keefe is now the fifth starter with perfect Hubbell in the bullpen, joining Blyleven and Blanton as middle relievers. That may be too many points allocated to bullpen innings, but I would like to keep at least one lefty. There have been so many changes in the past 48 hours that it probably makes sense to do nothing for the rest of the week and see what I have. I like what I see so far. Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions.

In the midst of a season that is heading towards certain relegation for Letterkenny in Diamond (16-38), I had the absolute best rip of packs I've ever had, and it only took 38 packs to do it. This makes up for the absolute horrendous luck I've had so far. In short:

1 Historical Perfect (Boggs), 5 Historical Diamonds (Chapman 97, Rixley 96, Santo 92, Cooper 90, Parnell 90), 6 Live Golds, 9 Silvers (including a couple historicals in the new collections), around 40 Bronzes, and a handful of Unsung Irons.

Finally justifies my use of packs.
