The Expedition

It's time to look at the Ottawa Expedition. They are on a 9 game win streak and have won 14 of the last 15. Their overall record of 51-20, .718 actually gives them a chance at 100 wins.

They feature a starting rotation that relies on, and receives, a one two punch. Pete Brophy (11-2) and Corentin Chauvin (11-1) are enjoying career years as they are virtual W's for the team whenever they take the mound.

OF, Xavier Holland, is the Beast of the team. Just 24 years old he is ripping the baseball to the tune of .376/.410/.579. The guy can field, too, with a +4.0 ZR, 2 OF assists, and 0 errors.

First baseman Renard is hitting .49 points above his average last season as he weighs in at .319. Luca Simon hit .232 last year, and he's hitting .288 out of the #2 hole. Third baseman Noel had an OPS of .604 last year and is current .881.

This team is clicking on all cylinders and it just may carry them all the way through. Curiously, they are way short on team chemistry and their skipper, Takuya Ishii, has bad relationships with a list of players. It seems only P Roland LeRoy understands the skipper. Yet, Ishii, a veteran of 24 years, knows how to win. He has managed to hold onto the manager position since the birth of the league in 1960.

Whatever the formula here, it is working.

Le Diamant vs Cap Chevalier Opener

The red hot Waves, having won 2 of 3 from the leagues best team the Ottawa Expedition, took on the Diamonds with Julien Henri on the mound. The Diamonds prevailed in this one as they won their 9th in 10 tries. The two teams are now deadlocked atop the Martinique League with identical records.

Julien Henri's Pitching record for the year

Henri has been hot of late, having won 4 straight ball games while working deep into the games. His most recent start was highlighted by a season high 16 ground outs and a complete game.

Triple Crown Player?

He has 2/3 of the Triple Crown in his back pocket. Can he lead the Expedition to a championship season? So far, he is doing it.

Final Regular Season Month and the Triple Crown

The Expedition are the surprise 'class of the league' as we work our way through the dog days of August and the post-season that will begin on September 4. Le Diamant seems safe for the playoffs but can't afford to let up as Cap Chevalier has stayed on their heels are season long. The Snake Eyes of Quebec had a horrible losing streak of 10 in a row that has reduced their chances greatly. Yet, still within striking distance for the wild card.

Xavier Rolland and his triple crown quest is the most compelling statistical category going on. Clearly, RBI's and Batting Average are out of everyone's else's sight. In the HR department, he trails Giverney's Pierre Maudit by one. Xavier is also tied with another Giverny slugger, Gerald Ferry, with 24 bombs.

Giverney, at one time in early July, led the France League with a losing record, but caught fire having won 17 of the last 22 contests. Nine years in the league and the Herons only have one wild card appearance in the post. Marseille has dominated that league having made the playoffs every year. But, the Soleis will not qualify this season with their current 49-65 record.

Julien Henri's batting numbers, especially power, are down from previous seasons. His pitching numbers have improved, or stayed the same depending on that stats that matter to you, from last season. A higher ERA, a lower WHIP, and a FIP that is slightly higher. Currently earning a 3.8 WAR.

Updated Standings and Triple Crown Race

The top 4 teams continue to win games (Ottawa, Le Diamant, Cap Chevalier, and Quebec), but, it appears the Quebec Snake Eyes may be the odd team out. Giverney, will win their division with a record less than these four teams.

The triple crown race tightened up in the batting average category thanks to a red hot Laurant Mercier. The Diamond RF is now batting .361.

I guess when your team name is Snake Eyes you might have to expect a few bad breaks along the way.

The Batting Crown

Laurant Mercier has been an elite player of the FBL for years. Now, he is on a hitting tear with four games of 3 hits or more in the last 9. On his resume:

8x Player of the Week
2x Player of the Month
3x Silver Slugger
2x Playoff Series MVP
2x World Championship

At the age of 30 he is putting up his best offensive numbers. He's overtaken Rolland for the lead in batting crown race (.374 vs. .362). His OB/SLG leads the league, too.

It looks like it will be Le Diamant, with a magic number of 3, capturing first place in the Martinique League barring a miracle run by Cap Chevalier. The Waves have a 3 game lead on the Quebec Snake Eyes with about 9 games to go for the WC. Giverney has seen their lead shrink to two games over the Paris Artists who swept them all three last week in Paris. And, the team to beat, the Ottawa Expedition, have cinched the Canadian League. If the expedition can run the table the final 9 games they will reach the century mark.

Final Regular Season Standings (almost)

The two powerhouse franchises, Ottawa and Le Diamant, will have the home field advantage in round one. Giverney edged out Paris to capture the France League pennant. The Herons have the unlikely task of taking on the Ottawa Expedition, winner of 98 games.

The drama has begun even before the post-season. Two second place teams have tied 79-59 records. The Cap Chevalier Waves, no stranger to the post-season having qualified four years out of 8, will have a one game knockout contest with the Quebec Snake Eyes, a team who won 88 games in 1960 and has not been back to the playoffs since.

The Waves hold a 10-5 advantage over the Snake Eyes but we'll find out if that means anything very soon. No apparent edge to the starting pitchers as they both check in with the same ERA.

Snake Eyes Advance

Ali Ricard stole the show with his 3 run bomb and RBI double as he led the way for Quebec as the Snake Eyes took down the Waves by a 5-2 score in Cap Chevalier.

The next task? Game 1 in Ottawa against the top team in the league.

First Round Action Game 1

In Le Diamant it was a blow out as the Diamonds exploded for 10 runs on 12 hits. If not for LeBlanc giving up 3 homers in the top of the 9th, the score would have been 10-1. Julien Henri went 0 for 1 as a pinch hitter.

In Ottawa, much the same story as the Expedition rolled over the Snake Eyes 7-1 despite being outhit 9 to 8. 'Pete 19-5 Brophy' got the W for Ottawa. Potential MVP Xavier Rolland went 2 for 3 for the Expedition.

First Round Action Game 2

Le Diamant jumped out to an early 4 run lead and then had to rally in the bottom of the 9th to get the W in a game that they were probably outplayed. The Herons, with 1 out in the top of the 9th in a tie game, pulled off a daring double steal. They had two chances to get the lead run home but both batters fanned.

The powerful Expedition find themselves locked in a 1-1 series with the Snake Eyes as 13 game winner Juan Rirard allowed 1 run on 5 hits in 8 innings of work. Ricard, the hero of the final game of the season, had another big game as his 2 run homer was the difference.

Ishii

Long before the Expedition ever played a game, had a practice, or even had a roster, there were two pieces in place. The first was the owner, Gabrielle Charrier, of France.

He was 61 years of age at the time, and having an architectural empire across Europe was no longer enough to keep his active mind challenged. He wanted a team. Forgoing any affilitation with football, he opted for the fledgling Francais Baseball League even if it would take him out of his native country France. French speaking Canada was the next best available franchise. He settled in Chicoutimi-Jonquiere. Only recently did he move the franchise to Ottawa. He claimed that 'finances' dictated the move.

Mr. Charrier has a strong desire to be the best. In everything. Some elements of the press described his first move as practically a 'financial bribe', as he lured the highly successful Japanese manager to Canada to take over the reins of the Expedition.

Takuya Ishii has been described as the 'Lombardi' of french baseball. His overbearing style has players, at times, in the 'silent revolt' mode, but, rarely do you ever here a spoken complaint. Ishii has often been quoted as saying, "losing is not an option".

Before boarding the plane to France, he held a closed door meeting to address his teams 'thoughtless play' in game 2 of the Herons/Expedition series. No quotes were available from the press. But, it's known that the meeting lasted 8 minutes and only one person spoke the entire time.
It will be interesting to see how the Expedition players react to the private words of their skipper in game 3, and, for the remainder of the series.

First Round Action Game 3

Le Diamant couldn't parlay a good top of the first inning into future success as the Herons dominated from that point on coasting to a win that leaves them down just, 1 game to 2.

In Quebec, the surprising Snake Eyes were out hit, but, not outscored. They have now taken the lead in the series as they hold a 2-1 edge over favored Ottawa.

First Round Action Game 4

A pair of errors in the middle innings accounted for 2 unearned runs, but Henri used both his arm and bat to help Le Diamant secure another win.

The Expedition bounced back to tie their series at 2-2 each.

Pre-Game Report Game 5 - Le Diamant

Two of the Le Diamant stars, Henri and DeLage, had done little to help their teams efforts for the first three games of the Giverney series. DeLage was mired in a hitless streak with just one walk and Henri had only a splattering of at bats without registering any impact.

Game 4 changed altered that situation for both of the Diamond stars. The childhood friends may have motivated each other to ramp it up as Henri was big on the hill and in the batters box, while DeLage stepped it up with some key hits.

They need one more win to advance to the championship round for a chance to win their third straight title. No cinch as the statistics, if you believe in them (who here doesn't) , rate this version of the team the weakest of the past three seasons.

First Round Action Game 5

The two favorite teams to make it to the final round both have 3-2 leads in their series. The difference being one is on a one game losing streak, the other on a two game winning streak.

Le Diamant battled back late in the contest to tie the score on a Julien Henri SF, but, it was Claude Renard stroking his 3rd hit of the game, a 2 run HR to right field that decided the contest in the 8th inning.

In Quebec it was the Pitching MVP candidate Pete Brophy settling business with his dominant 9 inning shutout baseball effort. The Expedition supported his effort with 6 runs on the board.

Both series now make their way back to the highest seeds home field with both the Herons and Snake Eyes having to win the next two to move on.

First Round Action Game 6

One of the two finalists have been determined. The Le Diamant Diamonds will head to the Championship Round trying to make it three straight. Julien Henri's 2 run homer proved to be the difference in the 2-1 win over the Herons.

In Ottawa, the surprising Quebec Snake Eyes scored 11 runs and managed to win by a score of 11-10, fighting off a furious 9th inning Expedition rally that saw them put up a 4 spot in the bottom of the frame.
