Absolutely. Front Office Football sort of went down the opposite road of this, and that game has undoubtedly suffered by not keeping up.

Online H2H would be great.

One concern would be a human manager vs AI Manager. I suggest that a H2H only be playable if both managers are present as the advantages a human has over AI could tilt balance in favor of human managers. Although, maybe this is a league rule type thing.

The capability for the commissioner to host the matchup (thus eliminating import/export requirement) would be a time saver. (no idea if this is possible).

I play two online leagues. Someone mentioned a game of the week for H2H which is a great idea because it would allow the human managers to actually manage their team against another human! Our league broadcasts our games on Twitch so the other managers could watch the live H2H. My other league it's just me & my dad for us to stay connected since we are miles & states apart. Sappy, but head to head would really plus up the online league experience. Understanding the limitations of one game per sim of course. Thanks for the discussion Markus!

Instead of doing H2H for stuff for online leagues, there are things that can be done to improve online leagues.

Defensive lineups - In an online league, a Ben Zobrist has significantly less value than IRL. Having the ability to start Zobrist at 2B, and in the 7th when I want my defensive subs to come in, having him shift to RF and my defensive specialist MI replacing the original RF in the lineup but playing 2B in the lineup with Zobrist in RF - THAT would be a massive addition.

So I'd set a starting lineup, and then a "defensive lineup". In the starting lineup, Zobrist is 2B. In the "defensive lineup", Zobrist is RF, and the bench player takes the RF's spot in the lineup and plays 2B.

It's not as hard as I've been told it is to code. You do an if check to see if all the bench players required are available (not injured, and not used in the game), and you make sure the required players (In this case, the starting RF and 2B) are currently in the game. If it meets the criteria, then Zobrist goes from 2B--->RF, the RF gets subbed in by the bench guy, and the bench guy plays 2B.

Things like this would have a massive impact on my online play, and interest me far more than a head to head matchup or whatever.

While this would benefit people in online leagues who sim games and don't control lineups more, it would help solo players as well who don't manage their games.

I have Player Report for #25 Manny Martínez in my online league. While he's valuable if people get hurt, he'd be more valuable if I have a lead in the 7th, if he can replace my defensive liability at 3B. So Martinez would play 3B, and my backup OF who is a 100 LF comes in and plays defence, with my poor defensive 3B leaving the game.

So for me it would look like this to start the game:

J Martinez - 3B
M Martinez - LF

Late in game - defensive subs

J Gonzalez replaces J Martinez
M Martinez moves to 3B
J Gonzalez moves to LF

Instead of the current solution, which is that I HAVE to have a backup 3B replace J Martinez at 3B, since M Martinez cannot be shifted over easily/consistently from LF to 3B.

I realize this thread is about H2H vs online gaming, but if the goal is to help online leagues, THIS would help more than H2H or online gaming, which to me is a waste.

I thought about telling all the people who said they would not use it that wasn't an option presented my Markus, but I'll save the snark for twitter.

Option #2 would obviously be the best option, especially for a head to head League Championship series but agree that there would need to be some sort of function to broadcast, though I guess with Twitch it might already be possible. (I don't use twitch, so I'm not a 100% sure)

Option 3 would be fun, though if you're including the purchase of packs to facilitate the function, then it would be a hard pass.

You do realize he asked "which one would you use?" right?

If I'm not going to use any of the options it seems that "none" would be the appropriate response.

Hmmm, since Markus didn't make "none" an option, could it be that his plans are for head to head to be mandatory? .......maybe he's going to eliminate solo play altogether....maybe ......Ah crap, I woke up on the conspiracy side of the bed again.

Agree with Personally, I'm far more interested in changes in team management options, player development, and contract negotiations and options.

I would not use any of the 3.

If #3 would help revenues, then it's something you should pursue but I would think you would go down a different path from what EA and others have done. EA and others make microtransactions work by selling to 3 to 15 million users in these titles.

Maybe a simmed H2H version of #3 can make sense, I don't know. Real-time is a real drawback in multiple ways.

I'm not sure what number three is exactly, I really have only ever played text sims, but your main online competitor has their system set up on a server. I would play OOTP online in this manner and would love to see a system of this nature designed for this game.

The problem with OOTP with its current online league setup is the cheating that occurs when a person runs the sims and which we all know exists.

Have the games run on a server and find a way to have commissioner duties for those that love to be in that role. Even if a person still needed the game installed on a computer it would be great if they could go to a server and download the file from there. Have that league file run like clockwork from the server. Or don't.

I will play OOTP solo in the winter but when the spring hits, I head over to the competition's game for online play. They sim 4 games a day and even have a function now where a person can watch the play unfold with short play by play text. This would get my vote.

I think #1 and #2 are a waste of your time.

Not to pile on, but I don't have any interest in H2H or online gameplay, and I doubt I ever would. It's just not what I use OOTP for.

What is the issue with making an online franchise like MLB the Show or Madden. Why can't you all be on the same game?

This is a text based game. Being able to actually control the team is much better than managing it, IMO.

And, it's like OOTP getting its own movie (not a documentary)
Which would mean it would be cool but probably won't be good.

Challenge a friend for an head-to-head exhibition game with your team from your solo league.
Positive: Easy to set up, quick action
Negative: No real reward, cheating is easily possible by editing players
Not interested.

Play head-to-head games in an online league
Positive: Good immersion, games mean something
Negative: Only the first game for a sim period (i.e. 7 days) would be playable, so commishes would have to sim & post league files day-by-day if users want to play out every game. Timing issue (in real life I even have problems meeting friends for a coffee, how likely is it that users in online leagues find the right time to meet and play?)
Not interested, because having a commish posting league files day-by-day is too much work.

Something like FIFA's Ultimate Team or MLB The Show's Diamond Dynasty mode
Positive: Great immersion, a new play mode (collect player cards and set up your team with them, card packs can be purchased or unlocked via achievements), no cheating easily possible, can challenge & play against strangers or friends via matchmaking, user teams can take part in automated league play
Negative: Lots of development work, success depends on number of users playing this mode
Slightly interested. Never been a big fan of the system, but an Ultimate-Team/Fantasy game mode if done correctly is a fantastic way to get to know other players. I would surely try it out.

I think head to head online gaming works best for ipad/android. There is a football game for these systems that is played words with friends style, meaning both players dont have to be online at the same time. The offense sends in their play. The other player gets a notification that it is his turn and then he sends in his play and then both players see the play unfold. Games obviously take longer this way, but this way people can play at their own pace and you can keep playing with a friend even if they aren't available at the moment. There can also be a matchmaking feature.

I would pay for an OOTP style app that did this on android/ipad.

I would love to see some way of integrating live online sims to twitch or something similar while allowing each GM to make decisions mid game. Thought process is for my online league I run I would love to run the live World Series sims... with live in game sim while allowing each GM to make the calls if they are available. Incredibly hard but would be neat

I love #1 and #2 NOT a big fan of #3 however as long as its optional for each option I think each would do a variety of fans of the game to enjoy this game in their own unique way
