Walkers news: May 8 -- Cedar Rapids 2, St. Louis 1

Record: 17-14, 2nd (Tied/w. Springfield), 2.5 GB Kansas City
I should have seen it coming.
Mitch "****ing" Garver.
A scoreless game in the bottom of the seventh inning, Cedar Rapids had runners at second and third with two outs.
Garver was at the plate.

A light-hitting catcher, he already was 0 for 2 but I had a hunch he might do something as he already had thrown out a couple of attempted base stealers.
My ace, Aaron Nola, once again had been dominant and my bullpen was beyond exhausted due to an extended run of short starts by my starting rotation so I left him in.
I got burned, as Garver doubled to the right-center gap scoring both runs.
I did finally score in the bottom of the ninth with two outs on a throwing error by Golden Grapplers third baseman Alex Bregman.
But with the tying run aboard, Danny Grigg struck out Nicky Delmonico to end it.
Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Carlos Martinez, who came into the game with an ERA over 7.00, worked seven shutout innings allowing three hits. He struck out six and walked two.
Danny Cullison and Tyler Bashlor combined on a scoreless eighth inning.
Grigg gave up that unearned run in the ninth and earned his third save.
Nola finished seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits. He struck out eight and walked two.

Walkers news: May 10 -- St. Louis 2, Kansas City 1

Record: 18-14, 2nd. 1.5 GB Kansas City
Kyle Hendricks pitched six shutout innings to help record his seventh consecutive win dating back to the start of the season as St. Louis defeated Kansas City 2-1 at Kansas City Municipal Stadium (1969).
Hendricks scattered six hits over his six innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked none.
Rookie Tyler Esplin had a hand in both of the River Walkers' runs.
He led off the top of the fourth inning with a double off Kyle Wright and scored on a Rhys Hoskins' sacrifice fly.
Two innings later, Esplin smashed an 0-1 pitch from Wright 401 feet over the fence in right-center field.
Five relievers followed Hendricks to the mound.
Felipe Vazquez handled the seventh inning, while Reyes Moranta, Brad Hand and Eduardo Jimenez all recorded an out apiece in the eighth.
Tommy Kahnle did nail down his seventh save of the season in the ninth, but it was not pretty.
Yordan Alvarez and Yasmani Grandal opened the inning with singles.
Kahnle struck out Freddy Galvis for the first out, only to walk Tyler Wade to load the bases.
Mookie Betts wrapped out the fourth single of the inning.
Alvarez scored but Grandal was thrown out at the plate on a strong throw from center fielder Byron Buxton.
Kahnle followed that with a strike out of Willy Adames to seal the win.

Walkers news: May 11 -- Kansas City 7, St. Louis 5

Record: 18-15, 2nd, 2.5 GB Kansas City
Down 5-4, Kansas City pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pave the way for a 7-5 win over St. Louis at Kansas City Municipal Stadium (1969).
The River Walkers had scored twice in the top of the sixth -- Rhys Hoskins with an RBI triple off Pit Masters starting pitcher Pablo Lopez and later scoring on a sacrifice fly -- but their bullpen could not hold the lead.
Relief pitcher Bobby Poyner got a ground out to open the inning but saw the next three reach base to jam the sacks.
Reyes Moronta took the mound, but the Kansas City batters continued to find their way on base.
Mookie Betts drove in one with a single.
Willy Adames chased home two with another single, as the Masters took a 7-5 lead.
Lopez worked 5.1 innings for Kansas City, allowing five runs on seven hits.
The Masters bullpen was much better.
Jace Fry got the final two outs of the sixth inning and tossed a scoreless seventh to set himself up to earn his first win of the season.
Andrew Ryan kept the River Walkers off the board in the eighth.
Ryan Burr did the same in the ninth to earn his 10th save.

Walkers news: May 12 -- Kansas City 7, St. Louis 1

Record: 18-16, 2nd (Tied/w. Des Moines), 3.5 GB Kansas City
Kansas City pounded St. Louis starting pitcher Trevor Hildenberger for seven runs on 12 hits over 5-1 innings to pave the way for a 7-1 win at Kansas City Municipal Stadium (1969).
With the win, the Pit Masters took the final two games of the three-game series.
Kansas City broke on top 2-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.

Freddy Galvis and pitcher Trevor Oaks did the honors with RBI singles.
That advantage doubled in the third inning, Yasmani Grandal driving in the first run on a fielder's choice and then Galvis connecting on a run-scoring double for his second RBI of the game.
The game became a blowout in the sixth, the bulk of it coming on a three-run homer from Greg Jones off Hilgenberger.
Oaks was impressive on the mound, with five shutout innings. He allowed five hits while striking out five and walking one.

He improved to 5-1 on the season with the win.

Walkers news: May 13 -- Fort Worth 4, St. Louis 3

Record: 18-17, 4th, 3.5 GB Kansas City
Keston Hiura snapped a 1-1 tie when he hit a three-run home run off St. Louis relief pitcher Felipe Vazquez in the top of the eighth inning to help give Fort Worth a 4-3 win at Busch Stadium (1997).
Joe McCarthy led off the inning with a walk and Jake Lamb singled to bring Hiura to the plate.
Hiura drove the first pitch he saw from Vazquez 410 feet over the wall in left field to put his team ahead by three runs.
The River Walkers scored twice in the ninth -- Byron Buxton with an RBI double and Christian Arroyo plating one with a sacrifice fly -- but with runners at second and two outs Blake Treinen got Tyler Esplin to ground out to end it.
Mad Men starting pitcher Jacob Junis worked four scoreless innings before exiting due to back stiffness.
It took six relievers to handle the final five innings.

Marco Gonzalez, VIctor Alcantera, Braun Miller and Colin Halderman all worked an inning apiece.
Treinen got the final three outs for his first save.
The victory went to Miller, also his first of the season.

Walkers news: May 14 -- St. Louis 6, Fort Wayne 5

Record: 19-17, 2nd (Tied/w. Des Moines), 2.5 GB Kansas City
Aaron Nola took a no-hitter into the seventh and then watched as the St. Louis bullpen squandered most of a 6-0 lead before holding on for a 6-5 win over Fort Wayne at Busch Stadium (1997).
Nola didn't allow a hit until the top of the seventh when Wilson Contreras doubled with two outs.
Fort Wayne started its comeback in the eighth when an Albert Almora single off Phil Maton scored Jose Pirela to make it 6-1.
In the ninth, River Walkers reliever Bobby Poyner struck out the first two batters but then fell apart.
He walked Tommy Pham and Pirela followed with a two-run homer, pulling the Mad Men to within 6-3.
Keston Huira drew a walk forcing St. Louis to make a mound change.
The ball went to Reyes Moronta and the first pitch he threw Tim Anderson drove 418 feet to slice the deficit to one.
The Walkers stuck with Moronto, who followed by giving up a double to Albert Almora.
Left-hander Brad Hand was called upon to face left-handed hitter Joe McCarthy.
He actually got the job done, getting Joe McCarhy to ground out to seal a heart-pounding win.
St. Louis used the long ball to build much of its 6-0 lead.
Nicky Delmonico went deep twice.
First, with a three-run shot off Fort Wayne starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery in the third inning.
His second was a solo job off Chandler Shepard to lead off the sixth, making it 4-0.
The next batter, Byron Buxton, also cleared the wall with a Shepard pitch.
The Walkers got what proved to be the game-clinching run in the seventh, Andrew Benintendi with a sacrifice fly off Victor Alcantera to score Bo Bichette who had led off the inning with a walk.
All the late game excitement overshadowed an impressive outing by Nola.
In his seven innings, he allowed just the one hit while striking out seven and walking a pair.
