Have been on the road the past two days and am now on vacation. Things might move slowly here a bit for the next two weeks. But have the laptop with me so I'm sure I won't be waiting too long to get the season started. Will post when I get a chance.

With Opening Day upon us, the Brewers got down to the requisite 25 man roster by sending young reliever Zach Barr down to AAA, keeping Brad Schmidt as the 25th man on the active roster and the 7th man in the bullpen.
The pre-season predictions have been published and it does not appear that the experts are very high on the Brewers youth movement as they are predicted to finish tied for 8th place.
Reigning champions, Jacksonville, are expected to run away with the Shoeless Joe League while L.A. is expected to narrowly hold off challengers Portland and Phoenix in the Moonlight Graham League.

Zach had a good spring, but, just 21 yrs old., he can work on developing his stuff. Let us know how he does in AAA.

And, in fact, the Brewers do get off to a tough start, losing 3 of their first 4 games.
Week-in-Review: April 12th- April 17th, 1966.
The Brewers drop 2 of 3 in the their opening series on the road against Detroit and the first game of 3 against Portland, but then salvage the week by taking both ends of a Sunday doubleheader in Portland. Unfortunately, in the loss to Portland in game 1 they also lost young righty flame-thrower Miguel Campos for the season (torn labrum.) This led to Logan Dunbar getting his wish to be in the starting rotation as he, for the time being at least, takes Campos spot.

Who's Hoppy? (yep, you will have to bear with me as there will be a few brew-related references.) Pretty much the entire young outfield squad gets off to a good start. Left fielder Antonio Puente (.381/.458/.571,) contributes 1 double, 1 HR, 5 RBI, center fielder Zack Banks (.353/.389/.471, ) hits 2 doubles with 5 runs scored, 1 Stolen base, and 2 OF assists, and see below for RF'er Ruben Souffront's start to the season.

Who's Hungover? Veteran firstbaseman Mark Compton, arguably the team's MVP for 1965, gets off to a very slow start (.050/.130/.100) as he goes 0 for his first 18 AB's. He ends the first week with just one hit- a double- and a -0.5 WAR but does collect 1 OF assist in just 3 innings in RF. Young starting shortstop Chad Brown also starts the season in a deep freeze (.136/.136/.227) though he does hit 2 doubles and scores 3 runs. He also commits a few errors in his first few games though his defense overall is looking improved from his rookie season.

What's Brewing Around the League? The Columbus Whalers get off to a 4-0 start to lead the SJL while Philadelphia is right behind them at 5-1. Reigning MGL champs, L.A. Spinners, jump off to 4-1 start and right behind them are Oklahoma City and Brooklyn, both at 4-2. Ageless Washington starting pitcher King Bedelcom (42 years old) hurls a 2-0 shutout against the Milwaukee Cadets in his first start of the season.

The Streak Souffront Saga: Ruben "Streak" Souffront gets off to a good start in his sophomore season (.381/.435/.524), collecting a big 3-run HR in the Brewers first win of the season, and a key OF assist. (This was a trend in the first week- the Brewers OF'ers cutting down runners on the bases.) Unfortunately, he also struck out five times while walking just twice and was 0 for 2 in stolen base attempts. (In the 1965 season, Souffront started the season with a very poor stolen base success rate but finished stronger to end with an acceptable rate, although well below what his ratings would indicate he should achieve.)

Brewers Power Ranking at end of week: #10.
Win-loss record: 3-3.

I probably should have mentioned that due to the season-ending injury to Miguel Campos, Ben Malzone's demotion to AAA was short lived. He takes Campos spot on the 25-man roster.

Week-in-Review: April 18th-April 24th, 1966. The Brewers go 4-3 in the second week of the season to continue a mediocre start to the 1966 campaign. After losing the home opener, 8-2, to Detroit they take the next two in the three game series. They then split a four-game series at home versus Portland.

Who's Hoppy? Catcher and captain Sam Rogers has a fine week and is off to good start. Rogers (.333/.394/.367) went 7 for 16 on the week. A pair of backup players are also off to strong starts. Young OF/1B Erik Shelton has acquitted himself well in his first taste of the bigs (.304/.385/.435) and is particularly impressing with his advanced approach at the plate and ability to draw a walk. Defensive specialist and third base backup Hector Uribe has been shining at the plate thus far as well (.467/.529/.533) admittedly based upon a very small sample size. But with his sterling defense and patience at the plate, Uribe has already produced +0.3 WAR for the season.

Who's Hungover? Second baseman Tanner Yurek, who had the best spring training of any Brewers' hitter, is struggling mightily at the plate (.162/.250/.243) and went 2 for 19 on the week. Shortstop Chad Brown continues his early-season struggles (.095/.156/.167) with a 1 for 20 week which saw him commit his third error of the season also. He is already sitting on a -0.5 WAR. Veteran first baseman Mark Compton (.139/.256/.250) was a bit better this week, hitting his first HR of the season (having led the club with 39 in '65) and going 4 for 18 with 6 BB's and 3 RBI, but is still well short of his normal production.

What's Brewing Around the League? The Washington Night Train now leads the Shoeless Joe League with an 8-2 record, followed by the Columbus Whalers at 7-3 and the Pittsburgh Roadrunners at 7-4. In the Moonlight Graham League, L.A. continues their hot start at 8-2, being chased by Oklahoma City at 9-5 and Portland at 8-5. Portland's star second baseman, Andy "Lemonhead" Wilson, the reigning MGL MVP, is off to another hot start (.426/.509/.830), tied for the lead in WAR with 1.8. He has 5 HR, 13 runs scored, and 16 RBI in the early going.

The Streak Souffront Saga: Ruben "Streak" Souffront (.268/.302/.366) cooled off a bit in the second week of the season, going 3 for 20 with 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 RBI, while striking out 5 times and committing 1 error (throwing). Ruben now sits at -0.1 WAR for the season.

Brewers Power Ranking: #8.
Brewers Record: 7-6, .538- 5th place, 2 1/2 games behind L.A.

Week-in-Review: April 25th-May 1st, 1966. The Brewers have a better week, getting 4 wins to just 2 losses. They start the week with a 7-3 victory over the Charlotte Sting, split a 2-game series versus San Francisco at home, and then take 2 of 3 from Baltimore on the road.

Who's Hoppy? Starting pitcher Jeff Burdick, who was the original Brewer (having been selected in the 1st round of the inaugural draft), is off to a good start (3-1, 2.38) after a disappointing 1965 season. Burdick picked up two wins on the week, hurling 8 innings in the win against Charlotte, scattering 6 hits, allowing 3 runs (2 earned), and then pitched even better in the last game of the week, getting a CG 5-hit shutout (5K, 2BB) against the Baltimore Lords. Captain Sam Rogers continues to shine as well (.444/.500/.622), with a 1.122 OPS and 1.1 WAR, as he had a terrific week, going 10 for 15, with 2 HR's, 1 double, 5 runs scored, and 4 RBI.

Who's Hungover? Young corner OF'ers Antonio Puente and Ruben Souffront, who started the season so hot, are now mired in slumps. Puente (.200/.278/.262) was 0 for the week in 23 trips to the plate and struck out 4 times. Souffront (.239/.271/.299) fared slightly better, going 4 for 22, but with no extra base hits, 1 run scored, 0 RBI, 3 K's and 1 BB.

What's Brewing Around the League? The Shoeless Joe League is now led by the Pittsburgh Roadrunners and Washington Night Train, both at 12-6, while Los Angeles continues its dominance of the Moonlight Graham League with a 12-3 record. In the MGL, Portland is in second place with a record of 12-6, while the Brewers now sit in third place with an 11-8 record, 3 games behind the Spinners.

The Streak Souffront Saga: see Who's Hungover above.

Brewer's current Power Ranking: #5
Brewer's Record: 11-8, .579, 3rd place MGL, 3 gb L.A.

A bit curious on how his lifetime BB/9, K/9 and BABIP stack up against the small sampling above.

A few personnel notes about the team:
Veteran OF'er Justin Schumann, who impressed so in spring training games, is on the verge of having his rehab time end and the team brain trust needs to make a decision about who to send down to AAA to fit Schumann on the squad. Likely one of the underused youngsters in the bullpen, Brad Schmidt or Ben Malzone, will need to be sent down, but no word yet on a final decision on which.

Also, it has now been noted in the local press that 25-year old second baseman, Tanner Yurek, has emerged early in the season as a new fan favorite locally, joining veteran third baseman, A.J. White, in that category. Yurek (.245/.328/.388), off to a slow start in the early going, did show signs of coming out of his slump in the past week of play.

How about a quick peek at what some of the Brewer's top prospects are doing thus far in the minors this season?
We will start with AAA centerfielder Pat Rondeau. Rondeau, who looks very much like a future gold glover, is off to a fine start in his first season at the top level of the minors. With young Zack Banks off to such a strong start for the Brewers and possessing similar defensive wizardry, this could be a positional fight of epic proportions in the next few seasons. But what a good problem to have.
With Rondeau's intangibles (sterling character, leadership potential), it is almost a sure thing that he will be given every opportunity to shine.

Relief pitcher, Zach Barr, he of the AFL no-hitter, is off to a mixed start for the AA Nashville Red Wings. While Barr has collected 3 saves and has both a sparkling ERA (1.80) and WHIP (0.90), his BB/9 and K/9 are unimpressive (to put it mildly) and his BABIP (.129) would indicate he has likely been very lucky in his 10 innings pitched thus far.

This would be good information to have. As it happens, though, I created this fictional league and did not sim ahead as so many people do with these leagues, but rather jumped right in. So what you see is all we actually know about his career stats. I will say that he was a very highly rated player coming into the inaugural draft (after all, I took him with my first pick for a reason) but has failed to live up to that prior reputation and has seen his ratings fall precipitously since.

Also with the AA Nashville club, young infielder Jamie Ledbetter is off to another fine start and may yet earn a spot on the major league club.

On the class A Bainbridge Brawlers club, two of the franchise's best pitching prospects, John Dugas and Jaden Francis, are both off to horrible starts and the team's leadership is contemplating whether changes are necessary to help them or whether they are likely to be able to work out of their present struggles.

On the other hand, Bainbridge first baseman, Bobby Erbakan, considered by many to be the top prospect in the organization, is off to fine start. Erbakan, a natural center fielder, is being given an opportunity to develop at first base, what with so much quality above him at CF in the organization and a potential need for a first base replacement option in the next few seasons.

A pair of young outfielders on the Bainbridge squad, with some potential for eventual roles in the majors, Michael Morgan and Dave Manning, are also off to good starts.

And in his first official game as a Brewer, veteran outfielder Justin Schumann comes up big in helping the team to an 8-2 victory over Brooklyn, while hard-working fifth starter Chris Montefusco continues to exceeds expectations.

Week-in-Review: May 2nd to May 8th, 1966. The Brewers had another solid week, once again going 4-2 by winning 2 of 3 versus Brooklyn and then 2 of 3 from Baltimore, all at Brewers Field.

Who's Hoppy? Young starting shortstop Chad Brown (.274/.315/.417), off to an awful start, started to turn things around this week as he went 11 for 22 with 8 runs scored, 3 doubles, his 1st HR of the season, and 2 RBI. Brown now has 9 doubles on the season, along with 4 SB (2 CS) and has committed 5 errors. Given that he committed 43 errors in the 1965 season, this is a sign of growth on his part. Star thirdbaseman A.J. White (.257/.409/.343) also had a fine week, collecting 7 hits in 19 AB's with 6 runs scored, his first HR of the season, 4 BB, 1K, 1 SB (season: 2 SB, 3 CS.) Workhorse starting pitcher Alex Burley continues to be the ace of the staff (4-1, 1.85) and got a complete game win in a 3-1 victory over Baltimore in which Burley scattered 10 hits, but allowed just the 1 run with 6 K's and nary a walk.

Who's Hungover? There wasn't a standout poor performance for the week but backup catcher, Tony Silmon, continues to struggle in limited action. Silmon (.095/.095/.095) is 2 for 21 for the season with no runs scored, just 1 RBI, 7 K and 0 BB and has a -0.2 WAR thus far after producing an acceptable 0.2 WAR in 1965. Unfortunately, there are just no better options for a backup catcher in the organization at this point.

What's Brewing Around the League? The Pittsburgh Roadrunners have seized solitary hold on first place in the Shoeless Joe League now with a 15-9 record. El Paso Dawgs climb into second place (13-9) while Washington falls to third at 14-10. The L.A. Spinners remain at the top of the Moonlight Graham League with a 16-5 record. Portland is second at 17-9, while the Brewers move into third place, 3 games behind L.A.

Streak Souffront Saga: Ruben "Streak" Souffront (.262/.295/.321)has a bit of a comeback week as he gathers 6 hits in 17 AB's, scores twice, drives in 2, and hits his second double of the season. Defensively he is still just adequate and all combined his WAR is sub-par (-0.1).

Brewers Power Ranking: #4
Brewers Record: 15-10, .600, 3rd place MGL, 3 gb L.A.

When you start to feel a bit panicky about the prospects of holding together your pitching staff and hoping that someone in the minors unexpectedly develops and that your most promising young hurler at the major league level somehow is able to come back eventually from season-ending surgery on a torn labrum (so often referred to as the career-ender.) You sign your 37-year old supposed ace to a two-year contract. (In my defense, he wanted a 5-year contract. Tried to get him down to 1 with a team option for a second. But he would only go for a player option on year 2.)
Also extended swing-man Logan Dunbar for another year. Probably need to start looking at trading from strength to find an arm or two for the rotation.
