Ivy League sux
Ivy will not allow senior spring athletes to graduate and maintain a year of eligibility. They will permit them to drop classes so as not to get their diplomas now and be able to play next year. Really shows they have educating young people as the priority. <sarcasm>

As it should be. Universities exist to get diplomas, not to play sports. The US has this completely backwards...
...is as unpopular an opinion as it probably gets on this board - maybe outside of listing "drowning kittens in a barrel" as a hobby - but I stand by it.

But if they are going to make students jump through hoops in order to participate, then have the decency to extend mercy & flexibility when circumstances beyond anyone's control throws everybody a curve.

Do the right thing. These are exceptional circumstances. There is no need to be so rigid about this.

Mostly over-reaction. The Ivies (essentially) did away with athletic scholarships in the mid-1970's as a reaction to Cornell using its NY State sponsored Ag school to bring in hockey and football players. Google it if you want more info.
Ed Marinaro and a few basketball players were the last highly recruited HSers. Remember, even the son of Yale all-time football great Calvin Hill went to Duke. The Ivies didn't allow graduate students to play before the virus hit and this is simply business as usual. Which is why Ivy basketball players with one more season of NCAA eligibility often transfer to play that last year. This is same-old, same-old, nothing new, nothing to see here.

The Ivies never did away with athletic scholarships. Nor did NCAA Division III schools. They just changed the name and started calling them "need packages." Just because the Ivies no longer recruit blue chippers (for the most part) doesn't mean they don't recruit and give financial aid to athletes.

The fact the IVY doesn't give out athletic scholarships is more damning to their position. If schools who are responsible for the costs of players attending school are willing to foot the bill, should not the Ivy do so seeing as it, theoretically, really isn't an added expense?
