I second this
If they are not going to get underway until June or July, might as well have any surgeries you have been putting off for this season since this season might only be 100-120 games long.

That will all shake itself out eventually. I just wonder why the Metsies have to start against the title-holding Gnats, and the Bronx Stinkees get free wins at the start of the season ...

This has to be nail-biting time for you guys. The state of Mets baseball, possibly for the rest of your lives depending on how old you are, rests on which of these "suitors" will be the winning bidder.

1. I don't know how I missed this thread! I've only been watching the best baseball-related telenovela in the world for a decade or so, but I'm glad to find other devoted drama lovers!

2. Isn't there a pr0n filter on this board? That photo you posted is very unpleasant!

3. If I may translate from the original Wilponian, this means: there's maybe one other fool besides J-Lo and the Devils guys.

As to your assertion, although many horrible life experiences have taught me to never, ever say "it can't get worse", especially when it comes to NY sports teams... but while I'd prefer to see J-Lo marketing against the Steinbrenner clan, because that would be awesome, I am pretty sure any new owner will at least be better organized than Fredjeff. Any of them will definitely be better-capitalized, even if they're standard modern baseball cartel cheapskate billionaires they'll probably hire some Ivy League nerds like everyone else so there will be fewer trades for 36 year old second basemen signed until the Rapture, annual trades for Kelly Johnson, etc.

Happy "Bobby Bonilla Day," you Mets fans!

"Bobby Bonilla gets paid more money from the Mets than more than half of this year's actual Mets players do in salary, and he hasn't played for them since 1999."

Not that the Yankees never had a bonehead contract themselves.

Hmmm. Not so unusual, of course (deferred contracts have been around for quite a while) and not so bonehead . . . depending on those concepts of net present value and time value of money as discussed by this writer.

It sounds dumb to be paying a ballplayer who left the team in 1999 until 2035 but it depends on how the math works out. I would need the details of Bonilla's arrangement, plus the now-forgotten knowledge of how to convert a series of payments over time into NPV, to comment any further.

Still, there has to be a good reason why July 1 is so widely recognized and celebrated as "Bobby Bonilla Day."

The Braves did it

So people would forget about the Bruce Sutter deal which will pay him $44 million over 36 years on a 6 year $9 million deal.

Of course, the Braves don't actually care because there's nothing bad or funny about deferred payments. There's just people who don't understand them

If the Mets had turned the money saved into a ring in 2000, you'd be choosing your words more carefully.

Yeah . . . WE got the ring in 2000 instead! Bwa, ha, ha, ha! (Just kidding.)

Indeed, the guy I linked to said "the deferment with Bonilla actually worked out for the Mets in some regards – allowed them to acquire Mike Hampton which ultimately led to the compensation pick of David Wright – and that deferred contracts were happening way before Bobby."

Mets signed Melky Cabrera, I hear.

Why?? Worst Defensive Outfield No Money Can Buy with Dom Smith and Solar Bear? Dom plays center. And somewhere, I hear, there’s a Cespedes that still has all his limbs attached…

Mets are aching for a cool moniker. Like, TEAM. The Egregiously Arthritic Mets.

Ugh. This team.

Wow, that takes me back. I had to think for a minute; he did play for the Yankees 11 years ago. I wouldn't have thought he'd still be around but here he is again. Actually, I just looked at his stats; at age 34, he played most of a season last year (133 games) and batted .280 for the Pirates. But yes, the Mets once again show their preference for washed-up veterans.

Yeah
Dumb Mets

Can't believe they didn't sign Wander Franco in July instead of Melky Cabrera

Ooh, Gordon Beckham too. Goodness.

Look up Cabrera's defensive stats from last year on baseball-reference. They make you wonder whether they have unmarked landmines in the outfield at PNC.

Bobby gets even MORE ----

--- Bobby Bonilla (again): A second deferred-contract plan with the Mets and Orioles pays him $500,000 a year for 25 years. Those payments began in 2004

--- In 2000, the Mets agreed to buy out the remaining $5.9 million on Bonilla's contract. However, instead of paying Bonilla the $5.9 million at the time, the Mets agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2 million for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, including a negotiated 8% interest.

--- Bret Saberhagen will receive $250,000 a year from the Mets for 25 years ( till 2029 )

--- Manny Ramírez: Will collect $24.2 million total from the Red Sox through 2026.

****** and whoever would buy the Mets would have those contracts .......

With baseball franchises' value regularly cited in billion dollar figures, those deferred contract payments are barely worth a sneeze...

Westheim, you will be interested in this:

Mets fans can pay $86 for cardboard cutout to be in seats at Citi Field!

You can’t buy tickets to Mets home games, but you can pay to be kinda, sorta present.

The Mets announced Tuesday that anybody can participate in their cardboard cutout program for $86. They plan to put the cutout photos of fans in the stands at Citi Field during their 30 scheduled home games during the 2020 season.

But Westheim, you will be disappointed by this:

Of course, the Mets aren’t allowing a free-for-all with the images submitted for the cardboard cutouts. Fans cannot include statements or endorsements of political candidates; phone numbers, social media handles or hashtags; offensive language; advertisements, slogans or third-party logos or branding; negative references to MLB teams; or names of MLB players, among other restrictions.

The image is burned in the mind. What has been imagined cannot be unseen. The effects will linger for days, if not weeks.
