Tournament Questions

Two questions about tournaments:

Does the region of a tournament matter? I wanted to create an annual European championship, so I set the region to Europe and to automatically set the teams, but when I do that, it just selects countries from all over the world. I don't want to have to manually set these every year - I just assumed that picking the region would limit the countries available to that region. It sure would be nice to have the computer just pick the 12 (or whatever number) best European countries and put them into the tournament.

Second question - how does the game decide which country players with a second nationality play for? For example, how can I ensure that Francisco Cervelli plays for the Italian team without wiping out his Venezuelan nationality? Or if he doesn't get picked for the Venezuelan team, how can I get him onto the Italian team after the fact?

1. Hmm, now that you mention this, I don't think we filter by region, although that's a great suggestion If you select a region I would think the auto-nation selection should gear towards that, but second nations might allow others in.

2. If a player is eligible for 2 teams in a tournament, then they will choose one or the other to be "eligible" for. I believe if you are in control of the tournament team, you should just be able to add them to the tournament manually and I believe it will avoid that automatic check.

Thanks for the reply. When I start a standard game will all boxes checked, and then create a 12-team tournament, it gives me the same 12 automatically selected teams, no matter what region is selected: USA, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Japan, Cuba, South Korea, Mexico, Germany, The Netherlands, Taiwan, Puerto Rico, and the Czech Republic. If I set the region to Europe and then choose automatically select, it's these same 12. If I set it to whatever, or leave it blank, it's always this group of 12, no matter how many times I refresh.

I don't think the dual nationality thing affects this - just to check I retired every play with a secondary nationality and refreshed the list of the tournament. Now the France got the Netherlands spot because I retired every Aruban/Curacaoan, but still the same new set of 12 regardless of region.

I don't know how complicated the coding would be, but would it be possible to patch OOTP20 so that if a region is selected, only countries from that region would show up in the automatic selection? I would love to run continental/regional tournaments automatically.

Note: I was surprised that Canada wasn't selected - what is the formula used?
Note 2: Canada did come up when I expanded the tournament to 16 teams. It looks like number of available players is a much bigger factor than quality of players in determining who the selected countries are.
Note 3: I ran the whole simulation again under a new saved game, and this time Canada did come in in the top 12 in place of the Czechs, so maybe there's some kind of randomness factor? Changing the region in this second game also affected nothing about which 12 teams were selected.

We won't be making changes to ootp20 for this, but likely in 21 can make changes here.

The actual teams picked yes generally is related to the number of players eligible from the nation and also the quality of the player. Canada hasn't had as many players recently, and especially the default roster sets I believe carry a lot of players from foreign leagues, so that tends to push Canada down the list.

Was this put into OOTP 21? This is the single determining factor in whether I buy it.
