Brewers humiliated by Diamond Kings, have lost 6 straight

So you say you want to be a championship baseball team? Well, here's a hint: don't play like this in September.

It's not just that the Brewers are losing lately. It's that they really aren't even competing.
Brewers fans are getting a foreboding sense of déjà vu. It's starting to look like 1975 all over again. The L.A. Spinners are now 3 games behind the Brewers and closing fast.

And if the Brewers can't figure out how to play this game again soon, it's bye-bye MGL pennant hopes.

Janes joins 2,000 hit club!

Jason Janes, the 33-year old center fielder for the Phoenix Speed Devils, has mostly flown under the radar during his 12-year WPK career. Sure, he's been an All-Star 4 times and he did lead the league in runs scored once (1973, with 112 runs scored) and doubles once (1968, with 40). But mostly he's quietly gone about his business with little fanfare. He's known as a very smart and ultra-durable player but very little else about him demands attention. Granted, he has a strong arm, as his 173 career outfield assists will attest. And while he is no longer a speed demon, he remains a plus plus base-stealer and base-runner. But even there, his 217 stolen bases while being caught stealing 135 times aren't really as impressive as his reputation in this area would indicate.

But while Dubuque (the WPK Hall of Fame) is not likely in his future, he was celebrated yesterday for reaching what is still a rather small club, when he collected his 2,000th career hit. And if nothing else, this much can be said of Janes. He just goes out year after year and puts up respectable numbers. And in the end, that's really more than most can say.

Week 22, September 5-11, 1976

Brewers record: 3-3 (week), 89-50, 1st Place, MGL (season).

September 5-6, at San Francisco: 1-3, 1-8.

Having narrowly lost the first game of three in San Francisco, the Brewers bats remained cold in the second game as Mike Stagner picked up his 10th win of 1976. Erik Sloan (12-7, 2.81) took the loss for Denver, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits over 7 innings. The Brewers committed 3 errors in the game while collecting just 6 hits, including Bobby Erbakan's 17th double and Josh Schaeffer's 12th two-bagger.

The bats remain cold in the final game of the series, the pitching falters, and the Brewers get swept by the Velocity. Sadahige Kawasaki (11-8, 2.51) gave up 8 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits in his 5 2/3rd innings. Josh Schaeffer went 2 for 3 in the loss, getting his 13th double.

September 8-10, at Oklahoma City: 3-17, 3-1, 3-1.

The Brewers hope that September 8th will prove to be the nadir of the 1976 season, the humbling moment that re-focuses the team and inspires them to work all that much harder towards a WPK championship. Because the other most likely option is that it will prove to be the moment they were revealed as pretenders, not contenders. It will be the moment they opened the door wide for the L.A. Spinners to walk on through, stepping over the prone body of the stumbled would-be champs, on their way to a second straight MGL pennant.

So, anyway, game 1. You already know the outlines. Sixth straight loss for the Brewers. Completely demolished by the 5th place Diamond Kings. Cheol-han Lee (14-4, 3.98) lasted just 3 1/3rd innings, giving up 8 runs on 11 hits. And then the bullpen poured gas on the fire. But hey, at least catcher Kirk Patnode went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, hitting his 6th double and 1st triple of 1976.
Moving on.

Game 2. The bats remain mostly silent. But veteran right-hander Steve Green (11-8, 2.60) leads the Brewers to the streak-ending win, allowing 1 run on 5 hits over 7 1/3rd innings. Jason Gottula gets the final 2 outs of the 8th for his 12th hold and Tim Shore pitches a flawless 9th for his 19th save. Joe McPhillips goes 2 for 3 in the game and hits his 25th double.

Game 3. Bats stay cold. Sekien Hamasaki (14-5, 2.64), though, is on fire. He goes the distance, allowing 1 run on 3 hits. RodRod leads the way on offense, going 3 for 5 with a run scored and hitting his 23rd double. Brett Taranto goes 2 for 4 and hits his 13th triple!

It wasn't pretty, but the Brewers manage to get a series win in spite of being outscored 19 to 9.

September 11, versus Charlotte: 7-6.

The Brewers thankfully return home to Centennial Stadium for a 3-game series against the Charlotte Sting.
And in the first game it appears that the rough patch isn't totally over as they trail 6-3 going into the bottom of the 9th inning. Erik Sloan was not sharp, giving up 5 runs on 11 hits in his 6 2/3rds innings pitched. And the much heralded but thus far ineffective Ben Flynn gave up a run on 4 hits in his 2 1/3rd innings. But Charlotte's 29-year old closer and team captain Mark Wachholz hasn't had a good season, in spite of his 21 saves. (His ERA coming into the game was 4.93 and his WHIP is 1.65.) And the Brewers batters were able to rally in the 9th. Brad Tesh worked a 1-out walk to get things started. Joe Willemse hit a groundball single to move Tesh to second. RodRod's second double of the game and 25th of the season plated Tesh and moved Willemse to third. Ben Flynn was scheduled to hit next. Ben is one of the more talented hitting pitchers you are going to see, but even at the plate this season he has been struggling. The Brewers manager admitted after the game that he nearly brought the slugging young left-handed batter Mike Lovett in to hit for Flynn, hoping for the long-ball to win the game. But in the end he decided to stick with Flynn. And that was the right decision. He got the game winning long-ball all right, when Flynn took the 1-0 pitch and deposited it on a screaming liner into the leftfield seats. Walk-off win. Whew. Maybe the Brewers have life yet.

Notes from around the league:
It is starting to look more and more like the Columbus Whalers, the reigning WPK champs, will be defending their title in the 1976 Kinsella Classic Series. They now have an 87-52 record and lead the second place El Paso Dawgs (81-57) by 5 1/2 games. The Milwaukee Cadets (78-61) are barely holding onto hope in 3rd place, 9 games back.
The Brewers, having seen the L.A. Spinners (85-54) narrow the gap to 3 games mid-week, end the week 4 games ahead in first place. The third place Brooklyn Aces (80-59) are 9 games back.

Thanks for asking.
Not really, but have been battling a very bad cold this week and so haven't had much focus mentally.
Still, should be reporting some progress tomorrow.
Heading towards the stretch run in the WPK and looking forward to switching over to OOTP 21 for next season.

WPK Time Machine (relative player creation)

It's that magical time of year again, when we get to hop into the WPK Time Machine and get a glimpse of the future, in the form of a few players who will eventually enter the WPK universe as relatives of current WPK players.

First let's zoom ahead to 1992, when Liam Russell, who at this moment is the two-year old son of current Philadelphia relief pitcher Tristan Russell, will become eligible for the amateur player draft. Our view of the future, limited as it is, tells us that young Liam will be a pitcher like his father, and profiles to fit the description of a WPK lifer (which is to say, moderately talented but very smart, hard working, and a good leader- the type who might well be a coach or manager after his playing career).

Hopping back into the time machine, we find ourselves in the yer 2024, the furthest into the WPK future we have ventured thus far, and we see young flame-throwing pitcher Quinton Murphy, who is the grandson of current Washington back-up second baseman Van Kendrick. It appears that the hard throwing Murphy's kryptonite will be the long ball, as he will suffer from a lack of movement to his pitches. Will it keep him from being a successful big-league hurler? Only time will tell.

Week 23, September 12-18, 1976

Brewers record: 4-3 (week), 93-53, 1st place, MGL (season)

September 12-13, versus Charlotte: 5-6, 2-0.

Having won the first game of the series against the Sting at home by 1-run, the Brewers drop a 1-run game in the middle game of the series. Matt Helm (11-4, 3.17) took the loss, giving up 6 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings pitched. Josh Schaeffer went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and his 14th double in the loss. RodRod went 3 for 5 and hit his 26th double.

Thanks largely to a superb performance by Sadahige Kawasaki (12-8, 2.40) the Brewers get the series win when Sadahige shuts out the Sting in the rubber match. He gave up just 3 hits in 8 innings pitched, striking out 5 and walking 1. Tim Shore pitched the 9th for his 20th save. Bobby Erbakan provided the bulk of the offense, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and hitting his 18th double of the season.

September 14-16, at Baltimore: 1-4, 5-3, 4-7.

Next up is a 3-game series in Baltimore against the 9th place Lords.
Game 1 doesn't go well for the Brewers, as the offense can't muster much of anything off a starter (Johane Villarreal) who entered the game with a 5.08 ERA. Cheol-han Lee (14-5, 3.94) suffers his 3rd straight loss, giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits in just 6 innings pitched. Nothing much of note for the offense, other than futility, although young first baseman Mike Lovett did walk twice while going 1 for 2.

Josh Schaeffer helps lead the Brewers to a win in game 2, going 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 1 driven in, while hitting his 4th HR of the season. His 1967 draft cohort, Joe McPhillips, was 2 for 3 with a run and 3 RBI and hit his 27th double and swiped his 23rd bag. Steve Green (12-8, 2.65) got the win, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits over 7 1/3rd. Eric Marino pitched the 9th for his 2nd save.

Sekien Hamasaki deserved better in game 3, as he gave up just 2 runs on 6 hits in his 6 innings. But the bullpen let him down, particularly the continuing disappointment Ben Flynn (2 runs allowed in 1 1/3rd IP) and the normally steady Jason Gottula (3 runs allowed while only recording a single out.) Brad Tesh went 2 for 4, hitting his 3rd HR and stealing his 10th base, in the loss.

September 17-18, versus Detroit: 6-2, 4-2.

Returning to Denver, the Brewers get a win in the first game against Detroit behind a strong start for captain Matt Helm (12-4, 3.08) and some better relief pitching. Helm allowed just 1 run on 5 hits over 6 2/3rds innings. Backup outfielder Val Guzman, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the 7th, went 2 for 2, hitting his 3rd double and 1st triple as a Brewer. Andrew Kennedy went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

And the Brewers end the week with another win against the Falcons, getting a good start from veteran southpaw Erik Sloan (13-7, 2.93). Sloan lasted 7 1/3rd, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits. Eric Marino, having himself a great season, pitched the last 1 1/3rd for his 3rd save and sees his ERA drop to 2.11. Andrew Kennedy (.343/.379/.427) leads the way on offense, going 2 for 4, hitting his 27th double and his 2nd homer of the year, a 4th-inning 3-run shot that was the biggest hit of the game.

Notes from around the league:
While nothing has been definitively settled yet, it certainly seems clear that the Columbus Whalers will be repeating as SJL champs. They now have a 92-54 record and lead the 2nd place El Paso Dawgs (83-63) by 9 games. It was a great season for the Dawgs but it looks like they'll have to wait 'til next year for their first SJL pennant. The slumping Milwaukee Cadets (79-67) are now tied with San Antonio (same record) for 3rd place.

Having seen their lead shrink down to only 2 games mid-week, the Brewers get a few wins and see L.A. (89-57) drop 3 straight and end the week with a 4 game lead in the MGL. Brooklyn (83-63) sit in 3rd still, 10 games out.

Jim Norris hurls no-hitter for 20th win of 1976 season

There is a new sheriff in town for the Columbus Whalers rotation and his name is Jim Norris. Having pitched in the shadow of the great Jake Harris for the past 4 seasons, Norris has emerged as the ace of the Whalers staff.

And yesterday, he notched two career firsts- his first 20 win season and his first career no-hitter. The 27-year old lefty is certainly looking like the prime candidate for SJL Pitcher of the Year this season and leads in 2 of the 3 Triple Crown categories, trailing Washington's Jose Casillas in strikeouts by only 6. In notching his 20th win he also put his team on the verge of clinching their second straight SJL pennant, as their magic number is down to just 1.

With his durability, his excellent change-up, and plus control that shows potential to develop even further, the future should be bright for the mild-mannered young ace.

Not Dawgs day, Whalers clinch SJL

Every Dawg may have his day, but for the El Paso Dawgs the hope will have to be that the 1977 season brings their day for SJL supremacy as their hopes for a pennant in 1976 have been officially dashed.

The mighty Columbus Whalers are once again SJL champs and will have a chance to defend their WPK championship in the upcoming Kinsella Classic Series.

For the Dawgs it is now just a matter of holding off the surging Boston Berserkers (and perhaps even the San Antonio Keys) for second place.

Week 24, September 19-25, 1976

Brewers record: 3-2 (week), 96-55, 1st place, MGL (season).

September 19, versus Detroit: 6-3.

The Brewers start the week by completing the home sweep of the lowly Detroit Falcons. Another good start for Sadahige Kawasaki (13-8, 2.44). Sadahige lasts 8 innings, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits. Jason Gottula pitches the 9th for his 14th save. Josh Schaeffer has a 2 for 5 day, driving in 2 runs and hitting his 15th double. Brett Taranto was 3 for 4 in the game.

September 21-23, versus Portland: 3-10, 6-3, postponed

The Portland Wild Things hit 3 home runs and stole 3 bases in game 1 as they handled the Brewers easily. Former Brewer Ruben "Streak" Souffront provided one of the round-trippers, his 6th of the season, and swiped his 57th bag of the season. Ruben is having probably the best season of his career at age 31, having been put up 4.9 WAR at this point.
Cheol-han Lee's (14-6, 4.10) late-season slide continues. He takes his 4th straight loss, giving up 6 runs on 9 hits in just 6 1/3rd innings. Joe McPhillips went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 walks in the loss.

The Brewers bounce back in game 2 behind Steve Green (13-8, 2.69). Green works 7 innings and in spite of allowing 11 hits manages to hold the Wild Things to 3 runs. Tim Shore works the final 2 innings for his 21st save. Bobby Erbakan's one hit is a good one- a 2-run shot in the 7th inning, his 7th HR of the season. He also scores twice and draws a walk. Brett Taranto went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and hit his team-leading 14th triple.
Bad weather postpones game three. It has been re-scheduled for October 3rd, on what was originally a day off before the final series of the regular season.

September 24-25, at Los Angeles: 1-2, 14-4.

And we now we come to perhaps the biggest series of the regular season for the Brewers. They travel to L.A. to take on their fiercest nemesis, the Los Angeles Spinners. Fortunately for the Brewers the Spinners have been slumping a bit lately and Denver holds a 4 1/2 game lead coming into the series. Still, an L.A. sweep could make things very interesting heading into the home stretch.

And in game 1 the Spinners do prevail, primarily by shutting down the Brewers offense. While it looked like the Brewers caught a real break facing #4 starter Andy Stewart (the Spinners top 3 have been great, but normal #4 John Tegel is out for the rest of the season and the Spinners back end of the rotation is currently pretty horrible). But the not terribly talented (and frankly, despised) Stewart somehow found a way to keep Brewers hitters off-balance for 6 innings and then L.A.'s closer extraordinaire Shouta Hori (the first MGL pitcher to 20 wins this season!) worked the final 3 for his 10th save. Matt Helm (12-5, 3.08) was strong- giving up just 2 runs on 7 hits over 6 innings- but took the loss. Brad Tesh went 3 for 3 in the loss, swiping his 11th base of the season.

Things went a bit more as expected in game 2 with the Brewers facing the weak #5 starter for L.A., Yin-ti Lau. Lau lasted just 3 1/3rd, giving up 8 runs and the Brewers romped to an easy victory. (The game was less close than it even looks, with Brian Murray giving up a couple of runs in his 2 innings of garbage time.) Sekien Hamasaki (15-5, 2.53) once again was excellent, giving up 2 runs, both unearned, on just 3 hits over his 7 innings pitched. Had someone told me at the beginning of the season that Hamasaki would have the most wins on the staff heading into the final stretch of games, I would have laughed at them. But he has certainly emerged as one of the best starters of the second half of the season and has earned a larger role in 1977. Among the many fine offensive performances for the Brewers in this one, Andrew Kennedy went 2 for 4 with 4 RBI, hit his 28th double and 3rd HR. RodRod also homered, his 5th, and was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. He did, however, also commit 2 errors (in one inning) to get to 24 on the season.

Notes from around the league:
As reported earlier, the Columbus Whalers have once again taken the SJL pennant and now watch to see which of the MGL contenders they will be facing.
Only 3 teams remain contenders in the MGL, with the Brewers holding a 4 1/2 game lead over L.A. (92-60) and an 8 1/2 game lead over Brooklyn (88-64).

Jake Harris first to 200 career wins!

Earlier in the season it appeared that the Denver Brewers' Cheol-han Lee would reach the career 200 win mark as the first WPK pitcher to ever do so. But with a late-season collapse-Cheol-han has now taken a loss in 5 straight starts- he sits as 198 for his career.

Meanwhile, the Columbus Whalers' Jake Harris has won 5 of his last 7 starts and passed by Cheol-han to be the first to 200.

Norris tosses 3-hit shutout

The Columbus Whalers clinched the SJL pennant earlier in the week, but apparently staff ace Jim Norris isn't letting off the gas at all down the stretch.
After hurling his first career no-hitter in his previous start, Norris follows that up with a 3-hit shutout, leading his team to a 1-0 victory over the Washington Night Train.

Next stop, the Kinsella Classic Series.
And after that? Likely he will be collecting some impressive hardware at the end of the season.

Andrew Kennedy has 6-hit day!

Andrew Kennedy did something that no Brewer has ever done in team history yesterday- collected 6 hits (in exactly 6 at-bats, too.)

And (more on this later), the Brewers needed every one of those hits to get the victory over Phoenix.

Brewers earn trip back to Kinsella Classic Series!

In spite of seeing a 3-run, 9th inning lead in Brooklyn disappear and become a 4-3 loss, breaking a 4-game winning streak for the Brewers, with the L.A. Spinners also losing Denver claims the 1976 Moonlight Graham League pennant and will be headed to the Kinsella Classic Series soon to take on the Shoeless Joe League's finest, the Columbus Whalers.

With four regular season games still remaining, the Brewers have already reached the 100-win mark for the fourth time in team history. They will likely rest many of their best players a bit in the next four days and are hard at work identifying the post-season roster and the best plan to defeat the mighty Whalers.

Week 25, September 26- October 2, 1976

Brewers record: 4-3 (week), 100-58, MGL Champs! (season).

September 26, at Los Angeles: 4-5.

The Brewers carry a 4-2 lead into the 9th inning of the rubber match in L.A., only to see the Spinners tie the game in the bottom of the 9th and win it in the 11th. A fine start by Sadahige Kawasaki is wasted. Sadahige goes 6 2/3rds, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits. Ben Flynn (naturally) (3-4, 4.85) takes the loss. Bobby Erbakan went 3 for 6 with 2 RBI.
With the win the Spinners keep themselves alive for the time being.

September 27-29, versus Phoenix: 5-6, 5-3, 9-8.

Cheol-han Lee's late-season collapse continued in the first game of a 3-game set against the Speed Devils. Cheol-han (14-7, 4.25) lasted just 2 innings, giving up 6 runs (4 earned) on 9 hits. (There is much talk about the former ace being used out of the bullpen- and perhaps sparingly- in the KCS.) The five pitchers that followed him were excellent and the team battled back but ultimately fell just short. Brett Taranto went 1 for 4 but scored twice and drove in run when he hit his 9th HR of the year (tied with Joe McPhillips for the team lead in this not-the-year-of-the-homer.)

The Brewers get a solid start from Erik Sloan (14-7, 2.96) in the second game to stop the little losing streak. The veteran lefty worked 7 1/3rds, giving up 3 runs on 9 hits, striking out 8 and walking just 1. Jason Gottula went the rest of the way for his 15th save. Brett Taranto, getting hot again as the season winds down, went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored. Rich White went 3 for 4 and hit his 27th double. And Bobby Erbakan's lone hit was his 8th homer of the season.

It took 10 innings, and as previously reported, a 6 for 6 performance by Andrew Kennedy, but the Brewers prevailed in game three to get the series win. Starter Steve Green was not very sharp, giving up 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and 4 walks in 6 1/3rd innings pitched. Cory Degano (1-0, 0.00), a 3rd round pick for the Brewers in the 1972 draft and a marginal prospect, pitched a wonderful 10th inning for the win. Joe McPhillips, who has largely been a non-factor down the stretch, did go 3 for 6 with 2 runs scored (he cracks the 100 run scored mark again) in this one. He also picked up his 27th stolen base, easily a career best. Rich White is getting hot at the plate again and went 3 for 6 with his 28th double.

September 30- October 2, at Brooklyn: 5-3, 2-1, 3-4.

The Brewers last road series of the season sees them head to Brooklyn to take on the 3rd place, and perpetually under-achieving, Aces. The Brewers, playing some gutsy ball down the stretch, score a 9th inning run to tie the game at 3 apiece and then plate 2 in the 10th and hold on for the win. Sekien Hamasaki got the start and gave up 3 runs on 6 hits over 6 innings. The win goes to Jason Gottula (3-5, 2.49), who pitched the last 2 frames. Andrew Kennedy (.350/.384/.441) was once again the offensive hero, going 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and hitting his 30th double while batting in the lead-off slot, not a role he is accustomed to.

Game 2 was a grind with the Brewers facing the reigning MGL Pitcher of the Year from the last 2 seasons- Aaron McNally. Fortunately, they got to him for 2 early runs, as you often must do with the greatest starters. And then saw Matt Helm have to leave the game after one out in the 5th (Matty had allowed 1 run on 3 hits). But as so often has happened this year, 23-year old John Weaver came in to take over for Helm (who had suffered a minor leg injury, as has also often happened) and was brilliant once again. Weaver (5-1, 2.53) got the win. Ben Flynn (surprise, surprise) pitched 2 good innings for his 2nd hold and Tim Shore finished it out for his 22nd save. The Brewers only managed 5 hits off McNally (16-12, 3.25), who went the distance, but 3 of those came in the first when RodRod hit a 1-out double (his 31st), Bobby Erbakan singled him home, and after Bobby stole second base with 2 outs, Brett Taranto singled him home.

The Brooklyn Aces, in their final home game of the season, sent the fans home happy when they came from behind to plate 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th for the walk-off win. Another tough-luck result for Sadahige Kawasaki, who held the Aces to 2 runs (only 1 earned) on 5 hits over 8 innings only to get a no-decision. Jason Gottula (3-6, 2.70) took the loss. Rich White (.288/.335/.404) went 2 for 3 in the game. Bobby Erbakan (.304/.352/.422) hit his 22nd double and stole his 11th base. (Speaking of Rich White, his 17.5 Zone Rating is by far the best among WPK shortstops, in either league.)

Notes from around the league:
Not much to say at this point. Columbus is just shy of 100 wins and gearing up to take on the Brewers in the KCS. It's looking like those upstart El Paso Dawgs will at least hold onto 2nd place and they have 90 wins. The Chicago Fire have the most losses in the WPK with 96, so no team will finish with triple digit losses. There is a real battle going on in the SJL for the batting title, with Philly's Xiao-mei Mah and Columbus' Matt Fleischman tied at .331. The top HR total in the SJL for an individual is just 15 while at least in the MGL L.A.'s Jesus Hernandez has 20 and Phoenix slugger Devin Schwisow needs just 1 to reach 20 as well. There are only two 20-game winners, and one of them is a reliever/closer (L.A.'s Shouta Hori).

And, of course, as already noted, in spite of the Brewers loss of game 3 in Brooklyn, they clinch as the Spinners lose 2 in a row to Phoenix and are mathematically eliminated. If the Spinners can sweep the last 3 against Brooklyn they would finish with 99 wins.

September Batters of the Month, 1976

The Pittsburgh Roadrunners 26-year old right fielder Bill Winchester doesn't always get a lot of press. Although he was a first round pick in the 1971 draft, it was the supplemental portion of the 1st round. And he did win the SJL Rookie of the Year honors in 1973. And although he also led the league in both doubles and RBI last season, he is largely unheralded. Part of this might be because he doesn't make headlines. He's known as a quiet guy who is extremely loyal to his team and his teammates. And maybe it's because he is certainly not a 5-tool talent. He's big and slow and not a great defender. On the other hand, for a slow runner he's a deceptively good base-stealer and base-runner. And he has a great arm in right field. But most importantly, he rakes at the plate. And that skill was enough to earn him the Batter of the Month honors for September.

And hey, lookee here, our old friend Ruben "Streak" Souffront is having a fine season at age 31 and had a terrific month of September. He's a free agent at the end of the season. Where will he land?

September Pitchers of the Month, 1976

Let's see, who might the SJL Pitcher of the Month be for September? Yeah, no suspense here, folks. (And likely soon to be also crowned the Pitcher of the Year.)

In the MGL, is 27-year old former 1-1 pick (1967) Edgar Lira finally coming into his own? Eh, maybe.

September Rookies of the Month, 1976

Another former 1-1, El Paso's Kyle Newsome, who went first in the 1972 draft, claimed the Rookie of the Month honors in the SJL, for the third time this season. The big question now for the hard working power pitcher is whether he will develop his secondary pitches enough to escape the bullpen and become the front-line starter he was projected to be.

In the most recent off-season, Taiwanese slugger Chia-Ch'ing Chou was one of the more sought after International Free Agents. In this year of the dead-ball (at least in terms of homers) he hasn't really produced as hoped. But the Baltimore Lords hope for even more from him next season and a strong finish to 1976 gives them evidence that the hope might not be false.

Felix Lopez first to 2,500 hits!

The great Felix Lopez, a sure future WPK Hall of Famer, went 4 for 5 in the last game of the 1976 regular season to get to 2,500 career hits (he sits at 2,503 now) as the first player in league history to reach that figure.

At age 33 Lopez remains one of the great hitters in the game and now has hit sights set on 3,000.
