Featherweight Final

Henry Armstrong 75-5-2 (65) vs Marco Antonio Barrera 68-7-3 (38)

Hank pressed the pace right from the opening bell and barrera scored well with his jab in the opening round while Armstrong banged away to the body. The slightly measured pace exploded in round two when Armstrong scored with two booming right hands and Marco responded with vicious hooks to the head and body, no quarter was given, or taken, as they engaged in fierce battle the entire round with neither man taking a backward step. Armstrong rocked Barrera early in the third with another right hand and this time he dominated the round with a relentless pace and countless bruising body shots and overhand rights to the head.

The fourth and fifth saw Marco employ some movement and get back to working his jab while Hank connected with a few right hands and they fought on even terms. In round six Barrera started flowing with right hands and hooks to the body behind his jab in what was his best round so far.

Round seven was immense in its violence, Barrera unleashed a beautiful four punch combo early and Hammerin Hank fired back with devastating right hands as they both showed off their granite chins in barbaric combat, the final thirty seconds were insane, two body shots and an uppercut from Armstrong, a 3 punch combo from barrera, they traded right hands and Marco scored with two thudding hooks to the body and a left uppercut to the head. The brutal nature of the round (19-23) took its toll on both of them, Armstrong's right eye was badly swollen and MAB had a mouse under his left eye.

They both took a step back in the next two rounds and there was nothing between them as a mutual respect and some movement from the Mexican brought more measured action. Armstrong picked it back up in round ten with huge right hands and body work while Marco connected with left hand counters to the body and head. Armstrong teed off in round eleven with one right hand after another while Barrera began to show signs of fatigue. The valiant effort of Barrera was fading and from that point on he took a nasty beating, dropped four times and the final one for the count in the fourteenth after a merciless barrage of shots from Armstrong.

Jr Lightweight Final

Manny Pacquaio 118-9-1 (102) vs Azumah Nelson 45-6 (32)

Rematch: Pacquaio TKO7 & TKO9

Nelson used unorthodox movement and occasional wild right hands, one of which hurt Manny in round two to throw off the Filipinos timing and sweep the first two rounds, albeit in competitive fashion due to some clean left hands from his foe. Pacman got his offense really going in the third and he rocked Nelson on three occasions with his trademark left hand and had him uncomfortable with explosive follow up flurries with both hands.

After a slow fourth they traded bombs in the fifth with The professor scoring with hard left hooks that left Pacquaio with a swollen right eye. Early in round six Pac drilled him with two left hands that buckled Nelson's legs, Manny unloaded with both hands and a vicious cross put Azumah down for an eight count; on wobbly legs the Ghana legend tried to respond with a right hand but Pacquaio promptly drove him across the ring with a straight left and unleashed a bevy of blows that brought the referee in to call a halt.

Lightweight Final

Benny Leonard 27-0-1 (6) vs Roberto Duran 84-16-5 (52)

Leonard started moving brilliantly behind double and triple jabs that almost immediately brought swelling to Duran's right eye, Roberto nailed him with a vicious right hand that staggered Leonard into the ropes, Roberto attacked the midsection but Benny used deft head movement to slip bombs up top and countered with sizzling hooks; Leonard ended the round with a dazzling three punch combination.

Leonard avoided the ropes in round two and out-boxed his hard charging foe with clean jabs and hooks while he masterfully slipped right hands and slid away from an increasingly frustrated Duran. Roberto slipped a right early in the third and countered with a crushing left uppercut that had Benny in a bad way, Manos De Piedra slammed powerful right hands to the body and head and a short right hand sent sweat flying from Leonard's head; Benny was intelligently defending himself but absorbing a lot of punishment when a right hand snapped his head straight back and the referee quickly intervened. It's not like he wasn't hurt and there was a lot of damage(4-29), but you hate to see a final decided by a potentially quick trigger.

Jr Welter Final

Aaron Pryor 49-1-2 (43) vs Pernell Whitaker 75-4-4 (17)

Whitaker's prodigious defense and stiff jabs kept the normally relentless Pryor outside over the first three even and slow paced rounds. The Hawk did open a cut under Peas eye with an uppercut in round two. With Panama Lewis imploring him in the corner Aaron exploded in round four, buckling Whitaker's legs with a crushing right hand and scoring several damaging shots over the final minute while Pernell slipped bombs along the ropes.

Whitaker met Pryor's pace in the fifth and he began to score with hard hooks and uppercuts to the body but Pryor hurt him again with a right hand and closed the round with a fusillade of blows over the final half minute, Pea defended admirably but several found a home. The Hawk maintained his momentum in the sixth as that right hand remained his money punch and some swelling appeared under Whitaker's left eye.

Pernell had a brilliant round seven, firing off double and triple jabs followed by clean left hands to the body and head that had his rabid foe backing off for the first time since round three. They engaged in hard in-fighting for round eight, Pryor scoring with uppercuts in tight while Whitaker pounded the body, a 3 punch combo buckled Pernell's legs in the late going and Aaron dropped a right hand flush on the chin in the closing seconds.

Whitaker caught Pryor coming in with a hook midway through round nine that turned his legs to jelly, Pea opened up with both hands and landed heavy leather including a huge left hand that opened a nasty gash over Pryor's right eye, two more left hands had that same eye rapidly swelling by rounds end.

The next three rounds were fast paced with Aaron pressing and landing his right hand while Whitaker countered with his left and they both connected to the body in close, while they were at range Pernell was gouging Pryor's dismantled right eye with stiff jabs and left hands that seemed to give him a slight edge in those rounds.

Pryor upped the anti in round thirteen, tossing well over one hundred punches that Whitaker nearly matched as they duked it out, two sharp right hands staggered Whitaker and Aaron ended the round with a barrage of shots that forced Pea into a defensive shell. Whitaker backed him off with two jabs and a left hand early in the fourteenth that had his nearly closed eye spurting blood, after a visit with the doctor Aaron stormed back to center ring and landed a clean right hand before Pea tagged him with three jabs and a left, the second visit to the doctor prompted an unfortunate stoppage to a fascinating fight. Whitaker was up on two of the three cards, 126-121, 122-125 & 124-123

Welterweight Final

Ray Leonard 93-7-5 (47) vs Ray Robinson 54-2 (43)

Both stars used their jabs effectively for much of round one, late in the round Robinson scored with a right hand and Leonard swiftly countered with a sharp hook in a completely even round. Robinson's right hand started zeroing in and he took rounds two and three. The pace erupted in round four as they traded blinding combinations in the center of the ring with neither man able to gain the advantage, late in the round Leonard ate two huge right hands and immediately responded with a double hook to the jaw of his rival and they both marched back to their corners with confidence.

The fifth was even for two minutes with both of them scoring well and then leonard connected with a searing hook that ripped open Robinson's right eyebrow, with blood streaming into his eye Robinson was a sitting duck for jabs and hooks while he launched back right hands in return. They did a good job on Robinson's cut and Leonard went to the well once too often with his hook when Robinson shot a short hook of his own inside of SRL's and it crashed into his jaw driving him into the ropes; Robinson opened up with a barrage of shots to the body and head that made the sixth the most dominant stanza thus far.

Leonard showed of his intestinal fortitude by immediately engaging Robinson in a pitched inside battle to open round seven where they both connected with vicious hooks to the body and head, Leonard took the round in the final thirty seconds with a flurry of at least 20 shots that weren't overly powerful but several of them got through.

Round eight and nine were dead even, they fought from a distance and used their jabs and follow up right hands equally, though Robinson ended the ninth with swelling around his left eye. Leonard was dazzling in round ten, using deft footwork while he worked his jab and 3 and 4 punch combos before sliding away when Robinson got close. They fought on even terms for much of the eleventh until a scorching hook rocked Leonard and Robinson ripped off powerful body shots and uppercuts over the final half minute.

Rounds twelve and thirteen saw a slower pace as both men got a little cautious with so much on the line, a few hard right hands may have given Robinson a slight edge. There was nothing slow, or close, about the final two rounds. Robinson hurt Leonard early in the fourteenth with a brutal right hand and he spent the final six minutes showing exactly why he is the consensus greatest fighter of all time, bruising hooks to the body and head coupled with clean right hands that had SRL's left eye lumped up at the final bell when Robinson's late surge netted him the UD, 145-141 x2 & 144-142

Mike McCallum 62-12-1 (43) vs Thomas Hearns 140-16-3 (105)

Rematch: Hearns TKO2, McCallum KO8

Tommy dominated the opening round with his punishing jab and some well timed right hands while McCallum got himself together. It was evident in the second round that neither of them had any intentions of this bout going the distance, Hearns rocked Mike early with a right hand and tore into him with vicious hooks to the body and head until Mike countered with a hook that staggered Hearns and the Body Snatcher banged hooks to the body and head until the Hit Man landed another thunderous right hand late in the round.

Round three was all McCallum and his brutal left hook, alternating between the head and body he opened a cut over Tommy's right eye with a crushing one late in a dominant stanza. Tommy used his legs in round four, though McCallum had some solid moments the few times he pinned Hearns on the ropes the jab of what appeared to be the Motor City Cobra carried the round.

Round five was razor close, Hearns landed two big right hands early and McCallum countered with a hook flush on the chin that turned Hearns legs to jelly; the heart of the Kronk warrior was on full display as they traded blow for blow over the final minute of a great round. They continued to engage early in round six until Hearns landed a devastating right hand, Tommy pounced on the Jamaican with violent hooks to the body and right hands flush on the chin until a particularly massive right hand bomb put Mike down on his face; somehow McCallum regained his feet at nine but after two more huge right hands the referee made a decision that nobody questioned and called it a night.

Middleweight Final

Carlos Monzon 28-0-1 (14) vs Marvin Hagler 28-0 (25)

Monzon used his long jab to maintain his desired distance in the opening round and late he scored with a clean right hand. Hagler got inside a bit in rounds two and three, and scored to the body when he did, but Carlos was still pumping his jab and landed several right hands that got Marvin's attention as he clearly built a 3-0 lead. That all changed in round four when Hagler connected with a crushing right hook and blasted the body with both hands before closing the round with an uppercut and double hook that left Monzon with a mouse under his left eye.

The next four rounds were all Hagler, working his southpaw jab and confusing Monzon with some fancy footwork, he continued to pound the body on the inside and his adjustment with his feet rendered the Argentine's jab largely ineffective, a 3 punch combo at the end of round eight drew oohs and ahhs from the crowd. After a close, but uneventful ninth round they upped the pace in the tenth and produced the most furious action of the fight, Marvin scored with two murderous hooks and scored well in a barrage of shots with Monzon on the ropes. In the final minute Carlos began to find the range again for his right hand and he dialed it up repeatedly to break Hagler's rhythm but Marvin ended the round with a sweeping uppercut that buckled his iron chinned foe momentarily.

Marvin dominated round eleven, peppering Monzon with his right jab and shooting lefts behind it to get inside and pound the body. He started round twelve in the same manner and clipped Carlos with three hard left hands before Monzon dug deep and dropped two big rights on Hagler's chin, Carlos' jab reemerged and he used it to set up four big rights over the final minute of a great comeback round for Monzon.

Round thirteen saw Carlos continue to use his stick and one of them opened a nasty cut over Marvin's right eye, two right hands in the final thirty seconds culminated another solid round for the King. Hagler got it back together in the following round, scoring with jabs to the body and overhand lefts to the head while Monzon countered with hard right hands in a very tight stanza. The final round was equally close, but Monzon landed three right hands during a heavy trade in the final twenty-five seconds that may have swayed the judges, when they went to the cards it was unanimous, the first one of 147-139 was absurd no matter who it was cast for, then the far more reasonable tallies of 144-142 & 143-142 were read and Hagler has proven to be the most Marvelous Middleweight of them all.

Super Middleweight Finals

Roy Jones, Jr. 92-7-3 (61) vs Joe Calzaghe 45-3-2 (25)

Jones landed a lightning fast hook moments into the fight that put Joe on his back foot and Roy used lead right hands and leaping hooks and uppercuts to dominate the first two rounds. After a slow third filled with more posing than punching Joe moved a bit closer and took the ball with clean body shots and short hooks to the head. A straight right from Roy opened a cut over Calzaghe's left eye in the fifth and it prompted a serious exchange of blows that Calzaghe ended with a brilliant four punch combo.

Rounds six and seven were razor close with Joe beginning to find a home for his jab that Roy occasionally countered with powerful hooks. Roy connected with a devastating hook a minute into round eight and he punished Calzaghe for the remainder of the one sided round with lead rights and left hooks and uppercuts while Calzaghe offered minimal resistance.

Joe fought on even terms in round nine when he began to land his left hand to the body from range while Roy continued to score with his lead right. The tenth was a clear round for the Welshman, popping his jab and exhibiting better defense to the athletic attack of his rival. Round eleven was virtually neutral, the enormity of the moment seemed to get to both of them and it delivered a round void of action.

Calzaghe stunned Jones with a short hook in round twelve and he delivered several vicious combinations that left Roy with swelling around his right eye. Joe tried to press his advantage in the thirteenth and after cuffing Roy with a hook he drove two straight left hands to his body, Jones brilliantly side stepped a left hand and drilled Joe with a counter right that put him down for a brief two count, while Calzaghe wasn't seriously hurt the adrenaline rush led Jones to a huge final minute with clean right hands and dazzling footwork. The final two rounds were tactical and could have gone either way, so when the UD came in the knockdown appeared to be the deciding factor and Jones took the hard fought nod, 144-141, 144-142 & 143-142

Light Heavyweight Final

Gene Tunney 47-4-3 (15) vs Ezzard Charles 51-3 (31)

Ezzard erupted in the opening round when he rocked Gene with a three punch combo and repeatedly tagged Tunney with vicious hooks during a thoroughly one-sided frame that left the fighting marine with a swollen right eye. Tunney came back with his technical brilliance in round two and used jabs, occasional right hands and defensive wizardry to thwart the offense of his athletic superior.

Charles began to bank rounds with his speedier shots while Tunney struggled to match his pace, in round seven Gene stunned Ezzard with a right hand and then opened up a gash under his left eye with an uppercut in a nice comeback round. While things never got too out of hand, and there were a few close rounds, Tunney was forced more and more into a defensive shell and Ezzard capped things off with a knockdown in the fourteenth off of a beautiful counter hook and he put it on cruise control in the final round and took the impressive UD, 147-137 & 145-139 x2

Cruiserweight Final

Vassily Jirov 45-4 (33) vs Evander Holyfield 55-1 (45)

They went toe to toe in the opening round with Jirov scoring eith left hands to the head and body while Holyfield countered with vicious uppercuts and hooks, Vassily ate a violent five punch combo to end the round. After a close second contested mainly on the inside, The Real Deal got up on his toes and out-boxed his rival with clean one-two's.

Evander dug in in round four and a murderous double hook opened a nasty cut over Jirov's right eye, Vassily fought back but ate one pinpoint counter after another in an action packed round. They traded on even terms over the first minute of round five until an uppercut from Vassily busted open Holyfield's lip and sent Evander into a rage, he repeatedly clipped Jirov with uppercuts and hooks that him backed to the ropes for the final thirty seconds.

Vassily showed off his heart with blood streaming down his face in round six when he took the fight back to his arm weary rival and banged to Evander's body with both hands and snapped back his head with a couple uppercuts during his best round of the fight. As is his custom, Holyfield roared back and staggered Jirov with an overhand right early in round seven and he opened up with Jirov along the ropes, an uppercut busted open Vassily's left eye and Holyfield unleashed a five punch combo to the head that had blood flying and the ref stepped in from a mixture of the blood and punishment.

Heavyweight Final

Muhammad Ali 29-0-1 (15) vs Joe Louis 28-1 (26)

Rematch: Ali SD12

After a slow minute of feeling each other out Ali fired a right hand that Louis slipped and countered with a short hook that put Ali down hard, Muhammad was up at seven and The Brown Bomber proceeded to take him to task for the remainder of the round with concise power shots and a right hand put Ali in trouble again in the final fifteen seconds.

Ali came back in the second and started popping his jab and right hand while Joe fired back with tight combos when they came together within range. Louis staggered Ali in the third with a left hook and then pinned Muhammad on the ropes and scored with two right hands before Ali flurried back with a series of shots that backed Louis off and he staggered him with two long right hands to close out the round.

Louis and Ali traded jabs over the first minute of round four until Joe connected with a vicious right hand that sent Muhammad staggering into the ropes, Joe spent the remainder of the round drilling Ali with punishing combos while The Greatest countered with occasional right hands as he showed off his prodigious chin. Muhammad came out for the fifth on his toes flicking jabs and bouncing right hands off of Joe's head while he struggled to track down his fleeter footed rival, late in the round Ali shot a right hand that landed clean and buckled Joe's legs and before he had time to recover Muhammad jumped in with another right that floored Louis and Ali hoisted up his arms in the victory pose, Louis popped up at three and Ali didn't inflict any more damage.

The Greatest was at his best in round six, pasting Louis with double and triple jabs followed up with right hands while he glided around the ring like he was on a magic carpet. Louis showed his resolve early in the seventh with a 3 punch combo that momentarily staggered Ali and he scored with two resounding body shots behind it, Ali stormed back with a vintage flurry culminating with a right hand flush on the chin that dropped Louis again for a three count; The Brown Bomber was seriously hurt this time and Ali busted open his mouth with a 3 punch combo and sent him back to his corner with a newly swollen right eye.

Muhammad, showing the magnitude of the moment with his serious nature, came out in round eight looking for the finish and he rocked Joe with a hard right hand. Louis backed to the ropes and ate two more rights before he countered with a picture perfect hook that buckled Ali's legs and he followed up with two ripping hooks to the body and an uppercut that snapped Muhammad's head back into a devastating hook that forced Ali to hold on and wait for the bell.

They engaged in a heavy trade to open the ninth and Louis stunned Ali with a pinpoint hook, Ali immediately fired back with two right hands that buckled Joe's legs and he stumbled into the ropes where Muhammad uncorked a flurry that Louis struggled to defend and a right hand put The Brown Bomber down for a six count; Ali pounced on him and landed several clean right hands before a shoeshine flurry prompted the referee to intervene.
