Defensive AI

Why is the defensive AI so stupid? The first baseman fields a ball 3 steps from first base, and then waits for the pitcher to run over to cover the bag. Rarely does anybody go for the lead runner. Always throw to first and let the guy on 3rd score. Is there a setting somewhere to make it more intelligent; or at least check the lead runner before throwing to first. Thanks for any guidance you can provide me.

From what I understand the actual AI used in "playing" games is merely showing you a rough idea of the play that happened within the simulation.
In other words, like in your example, the game simulated a infield sacrifice situation, and showed you such. It doesn't always look pretty because they're still working out the kinks in the visuals for the simulations.

Sometimes you'll see a mid-range flyball with a runner on third where it looks as though the runner could've easily scored, but it's only showing a rough estimate of a midrange fly, it might have actually been more shallow. It's very crude at this point, but still light years better than just a few years ago when they didn't have any visual. They only had text play-by-play.

They are actively working to improve it, though. I hope that answers your question.
