Pre-edited name/world.xml (with amended ethnicity ratios)

Because I went through the trouble of editing a name file with a lot of the edited names people have shared and then editing my World Default xml, I've decided to share what I've done to help you get a jump.

Here are the name files I know I've added:

- English Caribbean
- Dutch Carib
- French Carib
- Ukrainian
- Filipino
- North African
- Swahili
- Central Asia
- Laotian
- Estonian
- Icelandic
- Australian update
- Lithuanian
- Cuban
- Dominican
- Persian

I also balanced the ratios of ethnicities for many of these since many of them are horribly wrong and it annoys me. You can make your own changes to these files to your liking, but this will at least save you lots of time having to do it manually. Or if you end up getting your files overwritten when the game updates, this can save you time instead of having to do it manually.

Files were too big to attach to the post, to their own Github repo

I still need to edit the countries themselves to make them match the new country languages I added, because in most cases I didn't do that. But still majority of the work is done.

I started getting all of the name files together (from joefromchicago's sticky post) and trying to organize what country they should be used by and facegen numbers, etc. Also which ones were updates of existing ethnicities and which were new ethnicities. It would be cool to have a ready to go xml that had all of the community's names ready to go.

Great idea.

If you could make that a google sheet so we can crowdsource, I'd be able to help add things to the spreadsheet too.

That should work for editing.

Edit: Never mind, I saw them on the last line.

Hey darkcloud, I was looking through the world_default you posted and only see Thai, Laotian, Ukranian, and Icelandic listed as ethnicities. Did you have an updated file or did you only edit the names/first names files?

I'm not sure how to branch or duplicate the work to upload my edits to the file but I have been adding in a bunch of namesets (up to number 75 so far).

Okay I have the full world_default file along with all the first_names/names files almost done. I just need to get the US ethnicities in correctly and then can upload them all. I should be able to knock that out tomorrow.

My only question is with the french-canadian set. I know that the fact that it's gone from the world default file is old news, but can you use nameset 33 in the canadian ethnic percentage or will that give an error since nameset 33 is not in the file? How does it know to use french canadian names?

I'm not sure, but I think if you enter 33 into the world_default.xml file (e.g. substituting 33 for 8 in the list of Canada's ethnicities), you'll get names from your 33 nameset. The problem with 33 is that you can't access it with the in-game editor: the only way to add it is to make changes in the xml file.

I edited the names, first_names, and world_default file to all match. I edited all countries and changed the percentage ethnicities to match what I could find from those who uploaded the names. I also included the historical and female names under their respective countries but put their percentage at 0. This allows them in the file but removes them from players who don't want them in their game (I hope). Those who do should be able to just adjust the percentages under the country and everything will work.

I had to guess at some of the facegen percentages, so welcome anyone to edit those if need be.

I ran a quick league with this and everything seems to be working properly. Only issue is with some names getting an accent wrong - Rušo becomes RuÅ¡o. It is proper in the name file but doesn't show correctly in OOTP. Same with Thériault, Décarie, Ádám, Novák, and Várhidi. Other names like Ureña seem to work and first names seem to work okay.

I think that happens when you save the .txt file as ANSI, instead of UTF-8 (Unicode might be OK too). If it's in one of my sets let me know and I'll post a corrected version.

I've updated my original github repo with an integration of Steal of home's changes, except I didn't include any of the american ethnic, historical or female name files. (my files stop at 74)

More importantly, I fixed the language accent issues for ethnic names with errors. My original files didn't have that problem, and I was able to fix the additional names that he added that had those issues. Feel free to use/fork or whatever.

How do I put these updates to name sets into my game? I don’t want to make a mistake and mess things up, simple instructions please, I eventually figure things out but I am not very computer savvy.

Haven't been on the forums much, so I didn't see the earlier posts.

You need to do the following:

1. Download the world_default.xml, names.txt and first_names.txt files from Github (as simple as right click save as)

2. Replace these files in your OOTP save folder (backup your old ones!)

3. Use the 'Database' tab, click on 'Database tools' and then reimport the world XML file

4. Use the 'Database' tab, click on 'Database tools' again and then reimport the name and ethnicity database.

Then it should work without incident.
