Fantasy Draft / Minor League Contracts
Ok, I will try to explain my scenario...
I started a league with a fantasy draft. I wanted all the players to be younger so if the players were hall of fame worthy (ratings wise), they could actually compile enough years to make it look like it (stats wise). So most of my players are in the 18-28 year old range. And because it's a fictional league, I didn't want any player to have major league experience, so I reset that in the league settings.
Then after my fantasy draft, I noticed that everyone had minor league contracts. From some quick searching, I read that players drafted are typically signed to a team for 7 years of a minor league contract. Also all of the teams had a zero for "player payroll" spending. Essentially it looks as if every player is on the cheap for 7 years of which they hit free-agency, or unless the team (minor or major) cuts them.
Am I missing something, or is this the case? Not a big deal, as I can surely sign players to a major league contract. I'm assuming non-major-league contracts would be subject to the Rule-5 draft (correct??), so it'd be beneficial to sign your core players to major league deals?
So i guess my main question is...what would happen year after year if I never signed anyone to major league contracts? I've recently re-immersed myself in the baseball terminology after like 15 plus years of not giving a crap about the mechanics of baseball (all because of this game lol). So I could definitely use a brush up from anyone on the financials/contracts side, so that I can at least know what I'm doing. Thanks!
