Louisville Boxing Association

For lack of creativity I call my universe after my town ... I am using Cube's scheduling but a modified aging system ...

SETUP - Started in January 1900, with every fighter that started fighting in 1900 or prior. All the beginning fighters started at prime. Every year each fighter who debuted in that year will join (i.e. starting 1901 all fighters who debuted in 1901 will join). Starting in 1905 all new fighters will start at beginning (1905 so I can build a base of club fighters) and in the club group.

CLUB FIGHTERS - Any fighter who has 5 more losses than wins will drop to club fighters and will only fight newcomers and other club fighters. Only way out of club fighting is to even out their record. All club vs club fights will be fast simmed on the fight cards.

WATCHING VS SIM - I fast watch (meaning fast speed through each round) any fight that wasn't able to fit on a fight card and all fights in which the odds are 2 -1 or closer. If a fight is the main event it is always watched. I like to keep my own score cards to help keep my interest in the fights I watch.

ALTERED AGING SYSTEM - If a beginner goes 5 - 0 or 4 -1 in his first 5 fights he moves up to pre - prime and joins the main group. Otherwise after 8 fights. 7 - 3 or better after 10 fights they go to prime. Otherwise after 12 fights. Losing record anytime after 20 fights they go to post - prime. Everyone but the champ, top 5, or less than 5 losses, goes to post - prime after 35 fights. Everyone after 45. Once at post - prime they start cube's point system with 30 points. Once down to 10 points, they go to end.

CHAMPIONS - Must always fight a top 10 contender. Only exception is in their first Title Defense they must fight someone who beat them, unless they are undefeated. First two fighters in each division with 8 wins will fight for the championship. Must fight top contender once a year. The third time the title changes hands it's split into WBA, WBC, IBF

Well that's all I can think of for now. First year results to follow. Oh yeah, all fights are 10 rounds. Title fights are 15. Top 10 fighters fight 12 rounds.

FIGHT OF THE YEAR
Battling Nelson vs Andy Bowen ... both fighters faced the possibility of dropping to 1-3 in this December fight. Nelson was dropped in round 2, and then cut in the 3rd. Every round between the 4th and the 9th was within 3 on the point totals. I had it 86-85 in favor of Bowen going into the 10th. Ringside analyst Tom Trunzo had it 87-84 in favor of Bowen. With 1 minute left in the 10th, Nelson was trailing 10-7 on punch points, when he dropped Bowen. He piled on until the end of the round winning punch points 21-10.

Going to the score cards I had 95-94 Nelson, and Trunzo had it 95-94 Bowen. The judges scored it 95-94 Nelson, 95-93 Bowen, and the final judge who wasn't watching the fight scored it 97-92 Nelson. Nelson won only because of the knockdown with 1 minute to go.

Note at Bottom .... I am going to drop some middle of the road heavies into the LightHeavy division every year starting in 1901 .... to try and even it out some

Well thought out. I will be following along with this one. Good job, I was surprised that Peter Jackson beat Jack Johnson. It is not that I don't think he could, as Jackson was a great fighter. It is just the attributes given in this simulation. Also I find the unanamous decison surprising.

Johnson is 3-1 currently and his major downfall has been cuts. He has been cut five times to his opponents 0. I don't have my scorecard on that fight anymore (I score approx. 42 fights per 4x6 index card then toss it out), but Johnson suffered his only knockdown in the 6th round, and if memory serves I had it 96-94 Jackson. I think I need to start writing my scores of big fights or upsets in the biographies. I was going to do this on championship fight anyways.

Brief update through Feb. Solly Smith was the second to drop to club status with a UD loss to Jem Driscoll. Arthur Upham had avoided it earlier in the month with a SD upset of Johnny McGlade.

Championship pace: HW Childs, Jeffries, Jackson and Armstrong all with 5 wins. MW Dempsey with 6, Burke and Fitzsimmons with 5. WW Tommy Ryan with 5 (but he may have to wait a while for an opponent) LW Gans with 5, several with 4. FW Griffo is in the same boat as Ryan. BW McGovern in the same boat with Ryan and Griffo.

Only real big surprise continues to be Steve Taylor in the HW division who ran his record to 4 - 0 despite being rated a 3. He keeps getting the luck of the roll and being one of the fighters chosen to fight the closest competitor. I expect his bubble to burst first time he fights a HW 5 or above.

I did throw some Heavies in a LH. The highest rated was a 5, but most came from the 1880's set on cornerwork. They seem to be mostly 1's. Which is good because I need to build up the club fighters by 1905.

Also the alphabet rankings start at 10 fights, but I will have crowned a champion by then. The WBA will be the only one that matters until the third time the title changes hands. I haven't decided the parameters for unifying it once it splits but I'll figure something out.

Thanks for your interest chaleyit. I wish I has the know how for a web site but since I don't think I can do it right I will keep it here.

ALL GOOD THINGS ....

Steve Taylor's run ends at 4-0 but not for lack of controversy ...
tonight he fought Denver Ed Martin .... Martin came in as a 2-1 favorite and took control of the fight right off the bat. He easily won the first two rounds, only to be floored by Taylor twice in the Third. Taylor went on the offensive winning the 4th and 5th rounds easily. The sixth was close, with a slight edge going to Martin even though he was carrying his hands low. Within the first minute of the 7th Martin was cut underneath the right eye, Taylor went on the offensive and landed several shots. At the 2:00 mark, Martin landed his first punch of the round and cut Taylor above the left eye. The fight was stopped and the ring doctor called the fight.

The ring became a melee with Taylor's corner throwing punches at members of Martin's entourage. Martin's corner claimed racist remarks made and vowed revenge during the press conference. Taylor, evidently a Great X 4 relative of Oscar De La Hoya, claimed a full scale investigation would be launched.

"They want the Sullivan's and the Jackson's of the world winning fights, not the Taylor's" he was quoted as saying. Grand Master of the LBA, Mike Hanson, decreed that once both fighters were healthy, the normal scheduling rules would be set aside and a mandatory rematch would be scheduled.

One last thing I forgot ... Taylor was ahead 56-55, 58-54 and 57-55 on the official score cards and 57-55 on mine

Almost forgot Martin despite being rate a 4 ran his record to 4-0. Now Martin is ranked fourth in the PP rankings and Taylor dropped to 9th. The rematch garnered enought attention to be the Main Event on the fight card when it happens.

Stay tuned .....

JUNE 1901 UPDATE

Not much new to report ..... moving toward championships bouts and starting to get some club fighters ...

HEAVYWEIGHT
Peter Jackson has 8 wins and is awaiting an opponent for the title. It would appear that James Jeffries (7 wins) and Frank Childs (6 wins) are the two top candidates.

MIDDLEWEIGHTS
Jack Dempsey NP has 8 wins and is awaiting an opponent for the title. It would appear that Bill McCarthy, Jack Burke and Bob Fitzsimmons (all with 6 wins) are the top candidates.

MW CLUB FIGHTERS include P. McCoy, Brady, Greenfield, and Chandler

No other division has any fighters awaiting a Title opponent. Terry McGovern does have 7 wins and is closing in. There are a few fighters in the other divisions with 6 wins. It would appear that I will have a couple of Champs by the end of the year.

The fighters who already have 8 wins will fight the lowest rated opponent on months they are scheduled to fight, to try and avoid a loss. Rankings begin at 10 fights and if no one has 8 wins by that time the top two or first two ranked fighters will fight for the title.

Featherweights Smith and Murphy are the only other two fighters to fall to the club circuit.

The Highly anticipated Bad Blood Rematch between Steve Taylor and Denver Ed Martin happens in July. Stay tuned for results.

MARTIN - TAYLOR II

In the highly anticipated rematch (well at least in my own head ) .... The bout was over before it even got started.

Martin danced away from Taylor most of the first round, being over cautious after Taylor's prediction of a first round KO. With about a 1:00 left in the round the referee took a point away from Taylor for a phantom low blow that never took place. No warnings, just a point deduction.

In Taylor's corner, there were frantic screams between the first and second round. Taylor's corner telling him that the ref wasn't gonna let him win the fight. Taylor took it to heart and dropped Martin on the first punch of the 2nd round. He deposited Martin on the mat again :47 seconds later. Martin struggled to his feet, only to be swarmed and dropped again. The referee was left with no choice but to stop the bout.

The surprising Taylor (rated only a 3) ran his record to 5-1 and avenged his lone lose.

When asked after the fight if they'd be a rubber match, Taylor laughed and said "I've beat his ass twice now, I've got nothing left for him."

The first LBA title fight will be fought in September of 1901 in the Heavyweight Division. Peter Jackson who qualified for the title in June will take on James Jeffries who qualified in August with an easy KO of Jim Daly.

Jackson is 8 - 0 with 5 KO's his most impressive win coming with a UD over Jack Johnson,

Jeffries is 8 - 0 with 7 KO's his most impressive victory was a UD over John Dwyer.

BURKE DENIED

Jack Burke came into a fight with 2-1 underdog Jim Hall needing a victory to gain his 8th win and set up a title bout with Jack Dempsey.

Hall wanted to be the villian and fought Burke to a 10 round draw.

Burke's record goes to 7-1-2 and he becomes the first fighter with 10 fights and the first fighter ranked, but is denied a title shot for at least one more fight.

FIRST CHAMPION

In a relatively boring fight Peter Jackson won the LBA heavyweight championship in a MD victory over James Jeffries. The judges scored the fight alot closer than most at ringside had it scored.

Jackson took control early and never looked back. On my score card Jackson won the first 4 rounds and then sealed it by winning 12-14. I also had him winning the 7th and 9th. Jeffries couldn't get any kind of momentum going with the 10th and the 11th being his only back to back winning rounds.

my final score had it 145-141
shane mccleod at ringside had it 145-142
the judges scored it 143-142, 143-143, and 144-142

Jackson runs his record to 9-0 while Jeffries falls to 8-1.

There will be a champion in every division by the end of 1902 .... if no one qualifies then the #1 and #2 will fight in December. This should be the last rankings by PP as there should be enough to list by the LBA rating as I have it set to 10 fights.

I'm going to spend some time trying to rate a few fighters from 1902 before I start the next year, even if they are punching bags, I could use the #'s in the lower weights

FIGHT OF THE YEAR
In what was probably a preview of the eventual featherweight championship, Jem Driscoll met Young Griffo. It was a back and forth fight, with alot of close rounds. I thought it was very tough to score. Going into the final round both TT and I had Driscoll up 87-86. Driscoll put Griffo on the canvas 2 times in the 10th to win the round 10-7 on all scorecards.

It turns out he needed it winning a split decision. He won 95-93, 95-94 and lost 94-95 meaning he was down on all score cards going into the 10th.

FITZSIMMONS VS. DEMPSEY

Bob Fitzsimmons TKO'd Edward Rollins in the 3rd round of their Jan. 1902 bout to set up a much anticipated title fight with Jack Dempsey in March

Fitzsimmons runs his record to 8-0.

Dempsey still sits at 10-0.

JACKSON WINS FIRST TITLE DEFENSE

Peter Jackson has the choice of 3 top ten contenders to face in Feb. 1902. Jeffries, Johnson, and Tom Allen.

He decided on Allen. Not only did it give him an easy first defense but he had already beaten both Jeffries and Johnson. Peter felt he had nothing to prove to those two.

Jackson came out lethargic and split the first two rounds with Allen. Allen looked pretty sharp and fought the 3rd round fairly even.

At the beginning of round 4, Jackson landed a brutal shot to the eye of Allen which immediately opened a cut. The referee halted the action and consulted with the ringside doctor and called the fight. Just like that it was over.

Allen had started his career 3-0 which had him ranked 10th. It's unlikely he will ever get another shot. It's too bad it had to be stopped on one punch.

FITZSIMMONS WINS MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE

Uline Arena, Wash D.C., March 1st 1902

Bob Fitzsimmons scored an 8th round TKO over Jack Dempsey to take the LBA Middleweight Crown, in a strange fight that saw Dempsey completely dominate the action for all but 2 rounds.

Fitzsimmons said before the fight that he wanted to see what Dempsey had, then he would take him out. He stayed true to his word as he didn't land a single punch in the first two rounds.
He landed a couple of jabs and straight rights in the 3rd and 4th while Dempsey continued to land at will.

In the 5th, Fitzsimmons landed two big hooks and backed Dempsey into the ropes. Fitz won the 5th and stayed pretty even in the 6th. Dempsey mounted what would be his last charge in the 7th. He couldn't inflict any damage however and seemed to punch himself out.

Fitz went on the offense in round 8. He backed Dempsey into a corner seconds into the round and never let him out. Dempsey was out on his feet with a minute left in the round when the ref stepped in to halt the bout.

Dempsey's corner put up a protest but Dempsey did not.

In the post-fight press conference, Dempsey said he would see Fitzsimmons again and will be better prepared next time. Fitzsimmons said he looked forward to it.

LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT

The LBA lightweight title fight is set between Joe Gans and George Lavigne.

Lavigne barely beat out several other fighters to be the first with 8 wins.

Both fighters will enter the ring 8-1-0. The fight will be in May of 1902.

According to the rules governing the LBA, both fighters will have to stage their first title defense against the fighter who beat them. Gans would have to face Jack Blackburn who knocked him out in the 7th round in Jan 1902 (yes he is fighting for the title despite coming off a loss). Lavigne would have to face Harry Gilmore who won a UD over Lavigne in Aug of 1901.

Jack McAuliffe narrowly missed out on the title fight, winning his 8th fight 7 days later. Also Billy Meyer has sat idle with 7 wins for 5 months.

the Lightweight division has been the most competitive non-Heavyweight division so far, and looks to stay that way.

I personnally am root for Lavigne since Gans tends to put me to sleep.
