Week 4: Top 25 Media Poll

Another week of very little movement within the Top 25 poll. While a few of the teams shuffled a spot due to a bye-week, the point totals remained fairly consistent.

The biggest mover in this week's polls was Iowa, moving up 6 spots from #27 to #21 after their win over Michigan State. North Carolina State had the biggest drop among the ranked teams, falling 5 spots from #19 to #24. Purdue (then ranked #25) was the only team to drop out of the Top 25 after its loss to then #18 ranked Notre Dame.

There are 3 games next week between ranked teams, most notably #3 LSU traveling to take on the #12 Auburn Tigers. Should be a fun one to watch.

For anyone interested in joining an online league for BBCF, we've had one running in real-time since 2015. That means our schedule has us approaching the Bowl games for the 2019 season, then soon the offseason/recruiting before the 2020 season will kickoff in August.

The league's pacing allows for a very unique and realistic experience, and is very manageable.

Week 5: Preview of New Mexico v. San Jose State

Week 5 brings the New Mexico Lobos (1-3) to town to take on the San Jose State Spartans (1-2). Not really sure what to make of the pregame analysis as the Lobos have the advantage in Offense, Defense, and Special Teams, yet the Spartans are somehow favored overall.

After last week's beat-down by the Wolf Pack, the Spartans are looking to bounce back and put up a fight. If the team is going to have a chance, RB John Moreno (averaging 91.5 yards per game) will need to get more touches, and getting a solid game from QB Tony Lima is a must. It would also be nice if the team exercised some discipline and stop committing so many penalties.

The Lobos QB situation is interesting, as they have interchanged Week 1 and 2 starter Clarence Lanier (175 passing ypg, 51 rushing ypg) with Week 3 and 4 starter Steven Fleming (358 passing ypg) despite neither player being injured. Unsure of which QB they will start in this game. The Spartans defense will also need to keep an eye on RB Derrick Cantu who is averaging 4.83 YPC the last 3 games.

On the recruiting side of things, it appears that last week's blowout loss to the Wolf Pack has turned off any interested player from wanting to see the Spartans in action this week.

San Jose State 16 --- New Mexico 6

Well, it wasn't pretty but the Spartans (2-2) finally were able to mount some offense in the 4th quarter to pull out a victory over the visiting New Mexico Lobos (1-4).

The first 3+ quarters were nothing more than a battle of field goals. In fact, it was not until midway through the 4th quarter that San Jose State finally broke the 6-6 tie when QB Tony Lima (293 passing yards, 1 TD, 2 INT) completed a 5 yard TD pass to WR Lawrence Richardson. RB John Moreno saw more action today, rushing for 84 yards on 26 carries. The Spartans defense really came through today, holding the Lobos to just 224 total yards, forcing 3 fumbles, 1 interception, and 6 sacks.

With the victory, the Spartans moved to 1-1 in the "West Division" of the Mountain West Conference.

Week 5: Recap

Week 5 turned out some gems and it was another great week of college football. While USC and Wisconsin remained the top 2 teams in the Nation, there were several teams that put on a show for the voters.

In the Game of the Week, the #11th ranked (and undefeated) Washington Huskies traveled to Eugene take on the #31st ranked (3-1) Oregon Ducks. This one was a nail-bitter, as the game had five lead changes; including two in the final minutes of the 4th quarter. In the end, the Ducks pulled out the 25-24 victory through the outstanding play of RB Phillip Begay (142 yards rushing, 60 receiving yards, and 3 TD's). It should not be overlooked that RB Richard Cherry (Washington Huskies) rushed for 156 yards and 2 TD's in the loss.

Other notable games/performances include:

Memphis Tigers (5-0) remained undefeated with a 41-34 win over SMU.
QB Paul Almeida (Rutgers) and QB Angel Stubbs (Nebraska) combined for 920 passing yards in a game won by the Scarlet Knights.
Mississippi State (5-0) topped Alabama (2-2) 24-20 leaving the Crimson Tide faithful to wonder just how this season might end up.
Stanford RB Samuel Cooper rushed for 216 yards and now leads the Nation with 1,031 yards.
Auburn (3-1) beat LSU (4-1) 27-15, meaning the SEC title is up for grabs this year.

Week 5: Top 25 Media Poll

While the Top 2 spots remained the same, there were several changes in the Top 25 this week. The biggest mover in this week's poll was the Oregon Ducks, moving up 11 spots from #31 to #20 after their big win over the Washington Huskies. Also noteworthy was Auburn moving up 9 spots (#12 to #3) and Mississippi State rising 8 spots (#13 to #5).

Oklahoma had the biggest drop among the ranked teams, falling 6 spots from #4 to #10. NC State (then ranked #24) was the only team to drop out of the Top 25 after its loss to Syracuse.

There are 4 games next week between ranked teams, most notably #5 Mississippi State traveling to take on the #7 LSU Tigers. The French Quarter will no doubt be geared up for this match-up.

Grey Dog Championship Series Rankings

The first Grey Dog Champion Series ranking is out and the USC Trojans are at the top of the list. Penn State, Wisconsin, Mississippi State, and Clemson round out the top 5, and remain close in the chase. Following these top teams, the gap really starts to separate -- it will take some big wins and surprising losses to shake things up in the poll.

Admittedly, I am a little surprised to see Alabama ranked 13th in the poll; I believe that Oregon will finish in the Top 8 by the final poll; and love seeing a "basketball school" Duke in the Top 25.

Mountain West Conference Standings

A quick look at the Mountain West Conference standings:

In the Mountain Division, Boise State has a high-potent offense (currently a +104 point differential) and is dominating the competition. The team is led by senior QB William Harris (1598 passing yards, 15 TD's, and 3 INT's), along with the RB duo of James Brown (451 rushing yards, 4.85 YPC, 3 TD's) and Michael Webster (333 rushing yards, 5.37 YPC, 2 TD's). I fully expect the Broncos to cruise to the MWC title and maybe even crack the Top 25 by the end of the season.

In the West Division, it will likely come down to San Diego State (having the better defense led by senior OLB Edward Jones: 48 tackles (39 solo), 5 QB hurries, 6 stuffs, a pass deflection, and 7 sacks) or Fresno State (having the better offense led by sophomore RB Michael Carson: 638 rushing yards, 4.91 YPC, 4 TD's). I really don't see any other team being able to challenge here.

With 2 wins already on the season, I am optimistic that the Spartans can double that amount by the end of the year. If so, it will have surpassed the sadly low expectations I had for the team. #FingersCrossed.

Week 6: Preview of San Jose State v. Fresno State

Week 6 sees the Spartans (2-2) traveling for their first road game, taking on the Fresno State Bulldogs (3-2). Unlike the past few games, the pregame analysis this week is not sending any mixed messages. The Bulldogs are the clear and dominate favorite in this match-up!

Fresno State comes into the game ranked 32nd in the Nation on offense (419.2 YPG), and ranked 34th in the Nation on defense (allowing 327.4 YPG). Put differently, the Bulldogs are averaging 105 YPG more on offense & giving up 12 YPG less on defense than the Spartans. If San Jose State is going to have any chance, they must find a way to stop RB Michael Carlson (638 rushing yards, 4.91 YPC, 4 TD's); currently the 7th leading rusher in the Nation. The Spartans will need a big game from RB John Moreno (366 rushing yards, 4.21 YPC) and QB Tony Lima (QB rating of 97.6). But really, who am I kidding --- this is going to be brutal.

Lastly for you degenerate gamblers out there looking for some action, the Vegas line has the Bulldogs at -12. Good luck...

Fresno State 38 --- San Jose State 20

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly!

The Good: For most of the 1st Half, the Spartans (2-3) and Bulldogs (4-2) were tied at 14-14. Even when Fresno State kicker John Aguilar booted a 49 yard FG with 0:06 seconds left in the half, the San Jose State faithful were still feeling good about how the team had played. RB John Moreno had already busted out a 49 yard run to get the offense moving, QB Tony Lima had connected on a 75 yard TD strike to TE Harold Corcoran, and OLB Michael Williams had run back a 66 yard fumble return for a TD.

The Bad: The Spartans defense just could not contain Fresno State RB Michael Carlson, as he rushed for 121 yards on 25 carries (4.84 YPC) and added a receiving TD. The defense also had no answer for WR Aaron Grant, whose 8 catches for 136 yards was highlighted by his 83 yard 3rd quarter TD catch that broke the game wide open. Lastly, setting aside his 49 yard run (see above), John Moreno could only muster a dismal 30 rushing yards with his other 25 carries.

The Ugly: First off, the Spartans were penalized 11 times for a loss of 72 yards; never a blueprint for success. Next, QB Tony Lima completed just 13 of his 33 passing attempts, and WR Charles Lovell (3 catches in 14 attempts) dropped 2 key passes. Finally, the sloppy special teams play of the Spartans gave the Bulldogs far too many extra yards & points that San Jose State could ill afford to give.

With the loss, the Spartans move to 1-2 in the "West Division" of the Mountain West Conference. Next up, the Boise State Broncos.

Week 6: Recap

Week 6 may very well prove to be the turning point of the season. While the USC Trojans (5-0) retained their #1 ranking in the Top-25 Media poll with its 34-20 victory over the Arizona Wildcats (1-4), the Penn State Nittnay Lions (5-0) announced to the Nation they are the real deal.

In what proved to be the Game of the Week, the #4 ranked Nittnay Lions got the 37-30 overtime road win over the #21 ranked Northwestern Wildcats (4-2). Initially it looked like Penn State was going to have an easy day, as they jumped out to a 17-0 lead early in the 2nd quarter. Yet Northwestern had other plans, and tied the score at 27-27 with just 5:53 left to play. While Penn State quickly moved the ball, the drive stalled and they were forced to kick a field goal with 1:04 left on the clock. Not to be outdone, Wildcat kicker Cornelius Breen drilled a wobbly 58 yard field goal with just 0:03 left to send the game into overtime. The Wildcat magic ran out when Penn State QB Michael Parker connected with WR Michael Higgins on an 18 yard TD pass.

Other notable games/performances include:

# 7 LSU (5-1) beat #5 Mississippi State (5-1) 21-16
#20 Oregon (5-1) topped #19 Stanford (4-2) 27-20
#28 Duke (6-0) thumped Virginia (2-4) 34-7
Temple (2-4) RB Stephen Thomas rushed for 222 yards in the 16-12 victory over East Carolina (4-2)
#15 Oklahoma State K Ricardo Bell had a perfect day, going 7 for 7 on FG's and 6 for 6 on XP's
Navy ILB William Bennett had 16 tackles (12 solo), with 3 sacks and 2 stuffs

Week 6: Top 25 Media Poll

While the USC Trojans are still ranked #1 in the Nation, their hold on the top spot is being challenged by the now #2 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions.

The biggest mover in this week's poll was the Arizona State Sun Devils, moving up 12 spots from #33 to #21 after beating Washington State. Also noteworthy was Oregon moving up 8 spots (#20 to #12) and Ohio State rising 7 spots (#11 to #4).

Mississippi State had the biggest drop among the ranked teams, falling 6 spots from #5 to #11. Washington State (then ranked #24) and Boston College (then ranked #25) were the teams to fall from the Top 25 poll.

Nearly half of the Top 25 teams are taking on a ranked team in the upcoming Week 7 match-ups; led by #2 Penn State Nittany Lions traveling to Camp Randall Stadium to take on the #6 Wisconsin Badgers. #JumpAround

Grey Dog Championship Series Rankings

It did not take long for the Grey Dog Champion Series ranking to get shuffled around. The USC Trojans (5-0) are out of the top spot; replaced by the Penn State Nittany Lions (5-0). Ohio State (3-1), Clemson (6-0), and Georgia (5-0) round out the top 5 spots.

Arizona State (11 spots from #34 to #23) and Ohio State (7 spots from #10 to #3) had the biggest jumps in the Grey Dog poll, while Mississippi State (#4 to #11) and Wisconsin (#3 to #9) had the biggest drops.

Other notables include Alabama continuing to drop in the poll (#13 to #16); Oregon (#18 to #13) still on the rise; and that pesky "basketball school" Duke now up to the #21 spot.

National Team Total Offense & Defense Leaders

Quick look at how the teams stack up nationally in yards per game for "Total Offense" and "Total Defense" categories. While I expected to see the likes of Georgia and Miami on the list, I was surprised to see just how dominate the Hurricanes have been this year; ranked #2 in total offense and #1 in total defense.

I was also happy to see that the Duke Blue Devils have the #17 best total offense and the #2 best total defense. In what should be a great game, Miami and Duke square off in a Week 7 match-up.

While the San Jose State Spartans somehow did not make either list (must be a mistake), there are a few Mountain West Conference teams that do make an appearance:

Total Offense: Boise State (#9) and Fresno State (#31).
Total Defense: New Mexico State (#10), San Diego State (#16) and Fresno State (#32).

Seeing all this has me itching to fire up another dynasty. This truly was/still is best college football sim on the market. Just dated a bit

Nice thing is it is pretty flexible. I have gotten an updated pstats file with all 130 current div 1 schools working. I just wished they would update to a newer version to allow for current rules etc and better scaling for the newer monitors out now

Week 7: Preview of San Jose State v. Boise State

The San Jose State Spartans (2-3) travel to play on the blue turf of Albertsons Stadium in a Week 7 match-up against the Boise State Broncos (5-1). Much like last week, the preview analysis heavily favors the Broncos in this game, as they are currently on a 5 game win streak, have a high-potent offense, and possess a sneaky-good defense.

The Broncos come into the game ranked #9 in the Nation on total offense (486.0 YPG), and ranked #37 in the Nation on total defense (allowing 328.5 YPG); a 157.5 YPG differential. The Spartans will have its hands full in trying to stop senior QB William Harris (1,791 passing yards, 16 TD's to 4 INT's, and completing 65% of his passes). They will also need to keep RB James Brown in check, as he not only leads the team with 529 rushing yards (#33 in the Nation), his 30.2 kick return average ranks him #7 in the Nation. In case that wasn't enough, he also averages 17.0 yards per catch. This should be interesting.

It really is a fun game. Yes, I agree it has some age on it but it really does still play well. Hope you do start up a dynasty -- I will follow along if you post.

Boise State 45 --- San Jose State 20

Well, it really shouldn't come as a surprise that Boise State (6-1) won. If anything, the real surprise here should be the fact San Jose State (2-4) was only down 4 points late in the 2nd quarter. But with both the starting and backup Spartan QB's getting knocked out of the game with injuries, any chance of pulling out a win was gone.

No matter how well the Spartans played, they could not stop the Broncos big-play offense. QB William Harris (407 yards passing, 4 TD's) connected on three long TD passes: 63 yards to WR John Patterson, 67 yards to WR Paul Arnett, and 77 yards to WR Philip Lynch. Additionally, RB James Brown rushed for 118 yards on 20 carries (5.9 YPC), and 3 catches for 52 yards (17.3 YPC). On the defensive side of the ball, Bronco OLB Harley Taylor had a special day, getting 11 tackles (10 solo) with 2 sacks, 2 stuffs, and a pass deflection.

While things could have gone much better for the Spartans RB John Moreno still had a respectable day, gaining 88 yards on 25 carries (3.52 YPC) and 1 TD. Kicker Buddy Carr was perfect on the day, nailing 2 field goals and 2 extra points. With the loss, the Spartans move to 1-3 in the "West Division" of the Mountain West Conference. Next up, the Colorado State Rams (4-3).

Week 7: Recap

Unlike last week, the key Week 7 match-ups were not that close. The #2 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions easily defeated the #6 ranked Wisconsin Badgers 41-24. Additionally, the much-hyped game between the undefeated #14 ranked Miami Hurricanes and the undefeated #24 ranked Duke Blue Devils also disappointed, as the Canes rolled to a 55-10 victory. Lastly, while not impressive the #1 ranked USC Trojans remained undefeated by topping Washington State 22-17.

Other notable performances/games:

Iowa QB Roland Hernandez passed for 423 yards and 4 TD's.
Oklahoma RB Joseph Graham rushed for 202 yards on 31 carries, with 2 TD's.
Arkansas State Safety David Rogers collected 16 tackles (13 sole) and 1 pass deflection.
South Florida moved to 6-1 on the season with a 61-14 victory over East Carolina.
TCU (5-0) thumped Baylor (1-5) by a score of 58-3.

Wow. Lowly rated K Wright for Oregon State had a career day. Nice to see!
