Dynasty: Halifax Mooseheads: "Nate and Jo ain't here no mo'"

I tried a QMJHL dynasty with the first incarnation of FHM, to varying degrees of success and interest, so why not try it again with FHM2!

I have once again decided to use, as my first test dynasty, my hometown Halifax Mooseheads. It isn't going to be easy. That Memorial Cup victory is a distant memory. Rebuilding time has come.

The roster:
Goaltenders:
#1 Eric Brassard (20): A stop-gap from Quebec in last year's Zach Fucale trade, he stepped in and performed admirably enough to ensure that he was indispensable in this rebuilding season. Can't say he will be with the team all season, though.
#40 Kevin Resop (18): Figured he'd take control after Fucale's departure, but his progress has been stymied by Brassard. Next in line, will see more action this season than last as we see if he will be able to carry the load next year.

Defense:
#4 Dom Argento (17): Played sparingly last year; liable to be 6th/7th dman this season. Solid defensively, a bit of a mean-streak, points will be scarce.
#81 Cody Donaghey (19): Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick and the centrepiece of the Fucale trade last year, he's going to see 25 minutes a game in all situations, and will be involved offensively. PP quarterback.
#5 Cavan Fitzgerald (19): Recently signed an entry level deal with San Jose as a camp invite, he'll be counted on the shoulder much of the puck-moving burden from the point. Can definitely chip in offensively, might be actively shopped before the deadline.
#3 Walter Flower (16): Will be eased in as the eighth defenseman. Raw, coming off injury. Project.
#26 Taylor Ford (18): Played top four minutes last year, solid two-way play. Will be leaned on heavily. Good leadership; could be in line for a letter should there be many moves come the deadline.
#2 Cooper Jones (17): American camp invite, good offensive instincts, but looks a bit lost in his own end.
#11 Morgan Nauss (17): Third-pairing defenseman with good playmaking ability. Will see time in both special-teams situations. A bit raw in his own end still.
#9 Jean-Sebastien Taillefer (18): Was hit or miss as a stay-at-homer last season; if he doesn't take the next step, he may find himself rotating in and out of the lineup.

Forwards:
#34 Kelly Bent (20): Beat out Leblanc and Vuic for the third overage spot, but will likely stay on the fourth line. Agitator extraordinaire will be on the score sheet, but not likely for his finishing ability.
#61 Joel Bishop (16): Surprise making the roster, will likely be on the taxi squad most of the season. Gritty, tireless skater, will be a checking-line fixture eventually.
#28 Dominik Blain-Dupuis (17): Slight but with a physical edge; he'll see some fourth-line duty.
#17 Brett Crossley (17): Face-off specialist played a defensive role last year, now we'll get to see if he has an offensive game to match. Will see top-9 minutes.
#51 Barrett Dachyshyn (17): Good two-way instincts and great size. Skipped camp last year, but played well enough to earn a spot.
#23 Arnaud Durandeau (16): First round pick oozes offensive potential, but will be eased into top 9 duty.
#41 Max Fortier (18): Folk hero in the Memorial up run two years ago, talented offensively (though a bit snake-bitten next year). Will have to remember how to finish.
#96 Timo Meier (19): The offence revolves around the talented Swiss winger, who was a first-round pick of San Jose last year. One of the top five players in the league, and the team's captain, he'll be carrying the team on his shoulders most nights.
#71 Connor Moynihan (18): Make or break year, you'd have to think, for the potential power-forward. Hasn't taken the next step offensively, still raw, but has the toolbox to be a top-six finisher.
#12 Danny Moynihan (20): The third overager, who will be counted on heavily offensively, centering the top line. Skilled, and a gritty lead-by-example type, not afraid to get his nose dirty.
#53 Ilya Putintsev (17): Russian born, American raised, built like a tank. Great shot, great offensive instincts, but the defensive zone seems alien. Will have to work on his two-way game to stick in the top-nine for the season.
#32 Andrew Shewfelt (19): Had a promising year two years ago, but took a step back offensively. Will be on a short leash, as there is not much room for 19-year-olds on the fourth line of a rebuilding team. Good on the PK though.
#89 Otto Somppi (17): Just has to fill Nik Ehlers's shoes, no big deal. Gritty and skilled, will slot nicely into the top-six from the get-go.
#16 Vince Watt (19): See Shewfelt, Andrew, but with more offensive ability.

Injuries from training camp:
-Arnaud Durandeau will miss four weeks with an always-painful dislocated coccyx. Yikes.
-Morgan Nauss will also miss about four weeks with a shoulder injury.

Opening night roster:
Watt/D.Moynihan/Meier
Shewfelt/Somppi/Fortier
C.Moynihan/Crossley/Putintsev
Blain-Dupuis/Dachyshyn/Bent
spare: Bishop; inj: Durandeau

Fitzgerald/Donaghey
Ford/Jones
Taillefer/Flower
spare: Argento; inj: Nauss

Brassard, Resop

Next: the 2015-16 regular season!

Game 1: Halifax 2 @ Charlottetown 4

We knew offence was probably going to be hard to come by this season. All the more so when it takes 17 minutes before Halifax can get their first SHOT of the season. Goulet notched a goal midway through the first and Kennedy doubled the lead deflecting a point shot early in the second before Cody Donaghey banged one home from the right dot. Donaghey's second knotted the score midway through the second, but that's all Halifax got, after failing to convert on several powerplays. Gervais poked one past Brassard early in the third, and Kameron Kielly put it out of reach late. 4-2.

0-1 CHA Goulet (1) (Kielly, Rydstrom) 10:06
0-2 CHA Kennedy (1) (Thomspon, Rydstrom) 22:30
1-2 HFX Donaghey (1) (Somppi, Fortier) 23:34
2-2 HFX Donaghey (2) (Shewfelt, Somppi) 31:55
2-3 CHA Gervais (1) (Thompson) 6:26
2-4 CHA Kielly (1) (Goulet, Deschenes) 11:53

HFX: Brassard 23/27; PP: 0/4 ; CHA: Hardy-Murray 20/22; PP 0/3
3 Stars: 1. Kielly; 2. Donaghey; 3. Goulet

Game 2: Halifax 0 @ Saint John 2

Road games in back-to-back nights sees Halifax go with Resop between the pipes, and Bishop and Argento slot in for Blain-Dupuis and Flower. Halifax weathered a 14-shot barrage from the Sea Dogs in the first, while Halifax returned the favour with 11 shots in the second, the scoresheet blank after 40 minutes. Nathan Noel broke the deadlock early in the third with a clever deke on Resop, and Samuel Dove-McFalls added some insurance midway through the frame, banging home a rebound. Halifax only mustered 3 shots in an uninspired third period.

0-1 SJS Noel (1) (Bell, Joseph) 47:36
0-2 SJS Dove-McFalls (1) (Povorozniouk) 54:32

HFX: Resop 32/34; PP: 0/2 ; SJS: Turcotte 22/22; PP: 0/1
3 Stars: 1. Dove-McFalls; 2. D.Moynihan; 3. Noel

Game 3: Acadie Bathurst 3 @ Halifax 5

Home opener, with games again on back to back nights. Resop stays in goal, with the same 18 in front of him. Could be a long night, as Bathurst has notched 12 goals in their first two games. Cooper Jones notches his first QMJHL point on the team's first shot, 6 minutes in on a feed from Connor Moynihan. Kuznetsov ties it midway through, before Ilya Putintsev bangs home his first before the end of the frame. Kutznetsov and Putintsev again trade goals midway through the second, before Putintsev completes the hat-trick on a deflection late in the second. Watt scores short-side early in the third to extend the lead, before the wheels start falling off, as first Bent and Beaulieu, then Moynihan and Beaulieu drop the mitts. Sampson brings Bathurst back within two, but too little, too late.

1-0 HFX Jones (1) (C.Moynihan, Ford) 5:53
1-1 BAT Kuznetsov (2) (Maher) 13:17
2-1 HFX Putintsev (1) (Somppi, Ford) 17:08
2-2 BAT Kuznetsov 2(3) (Simpson, Thibeault) 29:22
3-2 HFX Putintsev 2(2) (C.Moynihan, Somppi) 30:26
4-2 HFX Putintsev 3(3) (Watt, Taillefer) 37:20
5-2 HFX Watt (1) (Taillefer) 42:19
5-3 BAT Simpson (3) (Kuznetsov, Francis) 50:06

HFX: Resop 34/37, PP: 0/7 ; BAT: Pickard 28/33, PP: 0/5
3 Stars: 1. Putintsev; 2. Kuznetsov; 3. Watt

Game 4: Saint John 4 @ Halifax 2

Brassard back in goal, looking for revenge following the shut-out at the hands of the Sea Dogs last weekend. First overall pick Joey Veleno pounces on a juicy rebound to bury his first career goal four minutes in. No more scoring in the first, but Shewfelt bangs home a goal early in the second, with the fourth line contributing. The tie is short-lived, as Joseph puts the Dogs back up less than a minute later. Halifax ties the game again early in the third, as Otto Somppi wins the draw and crashes the net for a powerplay marker. Saint John against responds quickly, with Matt Green burying one. Imama adds some insurance late. That's all she wrote: 4-2 final.

0-1 SJS Veleno (1) (Bell, Marsh) 4:05
1-1 HFX Shewfelt (1) (Bishop, Dachyshyn) 23:08
1-2 SJS Joseph (1) (Felixson, Veleno) 23:40
2-2 HFX Somppi (1) (unassisted) 40:34 PP
2-3 SJS M.Green (2) (Noel, Smallman) 41:33
2-4 SJS Imama (3) (Povorozniouk, Felixson) 52:38

HFX: Brassard 23/27, PP: 1/7 ; SJS: D'Orio 23/25, PP: 0/1
3 stars: 1. Veleno; 2. Sommpi; 3. Felixson

NOTES:
- the big three is having some trouble getting going. Meier, Fortier, and Moynihan have combined for 1 assist and a collective -4 rating through four games. They'll have to get into something approaching a groove soon, or Halifax may be out of it by mid-November
- Somppi has been a revelation early on, leading the way with five points, and also dominating the face-off circle. He and Putintsev seem to have some chemistry developing.
- Crossley has struggled and is a -5 early on. Faceoff numbers are down, too.

Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. I grew up a Mooseheads fan as a young kid living in Nova Scotia, but ever since living in Moncton since 2007, it's obviously the Wildcats who I go for these days... and an interesting rivalry between the two teams!

Game 5: Moncton 4 @ Halifax 3 (SO)

Atlantic division battle to stay out of the basement, as Moncton is winless and Halifax is 1-3. Moncton has been having similar top-end scoring troubles, as Conor Garland has only 1 point in 4 games. Scoreless through 1, despite Halifax pumping 13 shots at Zachery Fortin. Cavan Fitzgerald broke the tie early in the second, banging in a rebound in the slot on a Timo Meier shot. Danny Moynihan made it a two-goal lead shortly thereafter, wristing one home from the top of the circle. Potential turning point late in the second as Walter Flower was ejected after a hit to the head, which Askew capitalized on for Moncton before the end of the period to bring the Cats within 1. Meier and Klima traded goals midway through the third, and Tesink evened the score burying the puck past Brassard with four minutes left. OT solved nothing, so time for shootout! The big guns couldn't get the job done; Putintsev deked out Fortin with the 3rd shot, but Klima saved the day. Donaghey and Murphy traded goals. A Somppi miss and a Bower five-hole goal won the game for Moncton, their first.

1-0 HFX Fitzgerald (1) (Meier, Donghey) 25:56
2-0 HFX D.Moynihan (1) (Meier, Fortier) 32:01 PP
2-1 MCT Askew (1) (Johnson, Klima) 39:07 PP
3-1 HFX Meier (1) (Crossley) 44:34
3-2 MCT Klima (2) (Askew) 50:29
3-3 MCT Tesink (1) (Garland, Murphy) 56:07
SO: Meier (n), Garland (n); Fortier (n), Johnson (n); Putintsev (y), Klima (y); Donaghey (y); Murphy (y); Somppi (n); Bower (y).

HFX: Brassard 21/24, PP: 1/6 ; MCT Fortin 30/33, PP: 0/10
3 stars: 1. Askew; 2. Meier; 3. Klima

Game 6: Cape Breton 3 @ Halifax 4

The Battle of Nova Scotia kicks up for another season, with the Eagles rolling into town. Halifax nearly made it through a first period 18-shot barrage, before Evgeni Svechnikov tipped in a Lazarev wrist shot 30 seconds before the buzzer for a 1-0 lead. Vince Watt evened the score banging in a loose puck at the right post early in the second to tie up the game. The goals came fast and furious in the second half of the middle frame, with Svechnikov, Max Fortier, Brett Crossley and Maxim Lazarev trading goals in a five minute span, sending the game into the third knotted at 3 (despite CB only having two second period shots -- both goals). Cape Breton lost all of their puff in the third, going SHOTLESS. Putintsev buried a late goal on a two-man advantage to seal the deal. Brassard did not make a save in the final 42 minutes of the game, but still got the W. Let that sink in for a minute...

0-1 CAP Svechnikov (2) (Lazarev, Gosselin) 19:26
1-1 HFX Watt (3) (Somppi, Taillefer) 23:30
1-2 CAP Svechnikov (3) (Leblanc, Gosselin) 29:59
2-2 HFX Fortier (1) (Meier, Ford) 30:41
3-2 HFX Crossley (1) (Taillefer, Ford) 33:21
3-3 CAP Lazarev (4) (Beaudin, Svechnikov) 35:27
4-3 HFX Putintsev (4) (Somppi, Crossley) 56:51 PP

HFX: Brassard 17/20, PP: 1/5 ; CAP: Belanger 29/33, PP: 0/3
3 stars: 1. Taillefer; 2. Svechnikov; 3. Somppi

Notes:
- Big trouble for the Remparts, as #1 goalie Callum Booth will be out for a month with a bruised kneecap, meaning they will be running with two rookie goaltenders for the next while
- Glad to see Meier get off the schneid this week, with four points in two games.
- Bizarre stretch for Brassard v. CB. Such a barrage early on (with the shots being 18-3 for the Eagles in the first) outshot 30-2 in the last two periods, and Brassard gave up goals on three straight shots. Eek.
- Sherbrooke's Julien Pelletier was named the Player of the Month for September, putting up 7 goals, 4 assists in 6 games. Marc-Antoine Turcotte of Saint John was the month's top goaltender, with a 4-0 record (including two shutouts).
- Sherbrooke and Saint John both top the table with matching 6-0 records through the end of September. Shawinigan's Anthony Beauvillier leads the scoring race with 14 points.

October rolls around and Halifax is a middling 2-3-1. Morgan Nauss is back off of the injured list, an in the lineup to face the league-leading Sherbrooke Phoenix.

Game 7: Halifax 6 @ Sherbrooke 5 (OT)

Brassard and Evan Fitzpatrick are between the pipes. As they have done regularly so far this season, Sherbrooke gets on the board first with a point shot from Thomas Gregoire 14 minutes into the first. Daniel Audette doubled the lead on a floating wrist shot from the hash-marks less than two minutes into the second period. It only took ten seconds for Halifax to answer this second goal, as Vince Watt crashed the net to bury a rebound past Fitzpatrick to bring the Mooseheads back within one. The Halifax second line comes through again midway through the second, with Ilya Putintsev wristing one home to even the score. Cody Donaghey put Halifax up by one on a breakaway backhanded goal after having been sprung by Fitzgerald, for Halifax's third straight marker. Vincent Deslauriers tied the game late in the second with his first of the season. Audette notched his second a mere 30 seconds into the third. The Phoenix had been dominating the third period shot-wise, until Logan Johnston picked up a slashing penalty. Otto Somppi evened the score on the subsequent powerplay. Another powerplay, and a second Somppi powerplay goal put Halifax back up with about seven minutes remaining. Sherbrooke kept pumping shots at the next, trying to tie the game, and succeeded with a goal by Imbeault with the goalie pulled. 5-5. Off to overtime; a very short overtime. Somppi wins the draw back to Fitzgerald and bolts up ice, Fitzgerald banks the puck off the glass and Somppi gets in behind the D, burying his third of the game on the breakaway barely 10 seconds into OT. Halifax wins a thriller, handing the Phoenix their first loss of the season. The second line of Somppi, Watt, and Putintsev combined for 8 points.

Game 8: Halifax 5 @ Blainville-Boisbriand 3

Two games in two nights means Halifax counters with Kevin Resop in goal. Arnaud Durandeau makes his season debut after having missed several weeks with a tailbone injury. Halifax controls the paly for much of the first, with Danny Moynihan burying the lone goal on a feed from Max Fortier. Halifax had a golden opportunity early in the second with a two-man advantage that they failed to capitalize on, while the Armada, after killing the penalties, notched an even-up marker shortly after they expired from Hylland. Teasdale put the Armada up with a wrister eight minutes later. Timo Meier had a magnificent chance with about ten seconds left in the middle frame, but rang it off the crossbar. Another powerplay early in the third, and Halifax made no mistake, after a series of perimeter passes, Brett Crossley banged home a Meier point shot to even the score. Barely a minute later Halifax was out front again, with Otto Somppi banging in a mad scramble in front of Leclerc's crease, for a 3-2 lead. The Halifax lead lasted barely 30 seconds, as Connor Bramwell redirected a Teasdale shot from the faceoff dot to knot the score at 3. Back to the powerplay again, and this time it was Timo Meier who buried a shot from the hash marks after some great puck control, and Halifax led again. Cooper Jones put the game out of reach with a point blast past Leclerc with about two minutes remaining.

Game 9: Halifax 1 @ Drummondville 3

Halifax finishes their three-games-in-three-nights road swing, looking to complete the swing in front of 2700 in what many nights appears to be an actual barn. With Fitzgerald in the box, Michael Carcone broke the deadlock with a powerplay marker 7 minutes into the game. Drummondville made it a two-goal lead after an errant clearing attempt by J.S. Taillefer bounced onto the stick of Gaumond, who trickled the puck past Brassard. Halifax was gifted a golden two-man advantage opportunity late in the period but couldn't muster a shot. A 2-0 deficit after 1. After some back-and-forth action and a Moynihan/Doucet tilt, Drummondville padded their lead with Joey Ratelle's first of the season, on the powerplay again. Halifax pumped 17 shots at the Volts in the third, trying to get back into it, but were only able to notch one goal, as Cavan Fitzgerald broke Dumont-Bouchard's shutout bid with only 57 seconds reamining. 3-1 final.

0-1 DRU Carcone (4) (Theander, Sevigny) 6:49 PP
0-2 DRU Gaumond (4) (Doucet) 15:00
0-3 DRU Ratelle (1) (Gaumond, Aucoin) 37:17 PP
1-3 HFX Fitzgerald (2) (Jones) 59:03 PP
