Honus Wagner and Hugh Duffy are pretty sweet starting points.

The AL finally won their first World Series game in 1903. After winning that first game the White Sox decided to take it a step further and defeated the Phillies 5 games to 2, giving the AL their first title as well.
The AL MVP was awarded to Cleveland's Tino Martinez. Martinez hit .288/362/.530. Tino hit 30 home runs, 146 wRC+ and 5.2 WAR. The NL MVP went to Boston Beaneater Mike Trout for the 2nd year in a row. Trout hit .303/.423/.514 24 home runs, 27 SB, 174 wRC+ and 8.3 WAR Dizzy Dean took home Cy Young honors in the American League. This was Dean's 2nd Cy Young award, as was the AL's best in 1901 as well. Dean went 14-9 for the Cleveland Naps, 2.59 ERA,.232.2 innings pitched, 1.12 whip 7.2 k/9 8.4 WAR Boston's Ed Siever was awarded the NL's Cy Young Award. 15-8 2.24. Siever threw 233.1 innings had a 1.14 whip with a 2.9 k\9 and a 5.6 WAR Rookie of the Year in the AL goes to Ruben Sierra. The Senators number 1 pick hit .294/.323/.492 with 19 home runs. 129 wRC+, 4.8 WAR Larry Rosenthal took home Rookie of the Year honors in the NL. Larry hit .293/.398/.409 for the Chicago Cubs. The first year star hit 7 home runs, 144 wRC+ 6.8 WAR. Mickey Mantle won his first batting crown hitting .325 for the Boston Americans. Carlos Gonzalez, Mantles Boston teammate came in second hitting .318 for the season. For the second year in a row, Honus Wagner was the NL's top hitter. Wagner hit .335 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, 12 better than Philadelphia's Ichiro Suzuki's .323 Wagner also stole 70 bases to lead the NL in that category as well. Wagner led the NL with 103 runs scored As the season came to a close, lots of folk thought Honus would be named the National League's MVP, but it wasn't in the cards. Pittsburgh's Del Bissonette was the only player in either league to reach the century mark in RBI, with 101. Jack Clark led the NL with 32 home runs. Clark's giant teammate Dick Allen hit 27 home runs, leaving him with 99 for his career, most in the majors. Tino Martinez(Cle) and Sal Bando(Det) tied for the AL home run lead with 30. Nice to see Sal Bando doing well. Really underrated dude who could do it all. Dick Allen too. I'm stunned that man's not in the Hall, except of course that he was a bit of a crusty bastard, who probably turned off sportswriters and his fellow peers. Waiting for Sierra's inevitable cliff dive too. He looked so good early in his career, and then inexplicably fizzled in his mid to late 20s.

Oof. Yeah, that's quite the brick wall.

1904 is heading down the home stretch. The Boston Beaneaters are running away with the National League. With roughly 40 games remaining to play Boston has a 12 !/2 game lead over the second place Pirates.
The AL is quite a bit closer. The St. Louis Browns are leading the way in the AL, 5 1/2 games ahead of the Boston Americans. Philadelphia, New York and Chicago are within striking distance as well. Mickey Mantle started the 1904 season looking like he was a sure bet to be the leagues first 40 home run man. That doesn't look like it will happen now. In fact, Mantle has even relinquished the AL home run lead to Johnny Mize. Mize has 24, Mantle 23. Mantle is hitting in the .340 range for the season and a 2nd batting title and 3rd MVP are in his sights. Mike Trout is once again on a MVP course in the NL, but he has some stiff competition. Honus Wagner and Ted Williams are both giving Trout a run for his money. |

This league started as somewhat of an experiment, but I'm really starting to like what I'm seeing.
First off, I'm back using 1 year recalc. 1 year recalc is my true love. I love the ups and downs players go through during their careers. To me those ups and downs are what make baseball such an intriguing game. Bryce Harper hitting .330 in 2015, followed by .243 in 2016 is an example of what I want my OOTP league to reproduce. Tied into using 1 year recalc, I have injuries turned off. My experiment here is to see whether the cruelness of 1 year recalc is enough all by itself in terms of the effects and limits it puts on a players overall career production. I do have the OOTP development engine on as well. So, I'm using a combo of 1 year recalc and OOTP development. I have "Talent Change Randomness" set to the max 200. I'm a sadist. To counter the lack of injuries, I'm using "very high" for my position player fatigue setting. For pitchers, I'm using the "strict, occasionally start highest rested" setting with a 5 man rotation. I usually always use "start highest rested," but strict seems to be working better in terms of no injuries. I would love to use highest rested and a 6 man rotation, but I don't like the results. I'm using a 5 round draft each season. For now, I'm continuing my use of 1980 as my base year. In the future I may change this up, just to add some spice to the league, but for now it's 1980. Financials are progressing according to history, so the reserve clause is in effect. I'm also letting the game progress historically in terms of league configuration and stadiums. Of course, stadiums are all neutral due to random debut rules. I currently have no All Star game. I have storylines turned on. I am using the DH for the AL and no DH for the NL. Main reason for this setup is the fact that I'm using 1980 as my stat base and 1980 is based on an AL with a DH and an NL without one. Last edited by David Watts; 11-18-2019 at 10:03 AM. |

What settings are you using for starting and relief hooks? Also what pitcher stamina setting?
Your numbers look good. I think I’m scratching my league and starting over. Offense was too much and they seem to be beating up on the bullpens |

Starting pitching is set to "Normal" --1980 default. I have use of relievers set to the 1980 default as well, which I'm pretty sure is often. I may have increased use of closers to very often, if not it would be at the default 1980 setting as well. I will check that when I get home from work and let you know. For the first two years of the league I was editing the hook settings for the game back to default, but in 1903 I decided to use what the game sets when calculations get run.

One thing I keep going back and forth on is, should I add a wildcard to my league's playoff settings? Part of me says yes, as it would ensure the likelihood of an interesting race to the finish each year. This year the leaders of the NL have a 12 1/2 game lead. The purist in me says no, don't add a wildcard. Giving a team 12 1/2 back a chance to steal a title is wrong in so many ways. Especially in a league with injuries turned off. I think for now I will continue on with the two league leaders facing off in the World Series, no wildcard.

Another thing I've done in this league is to turn down stolen base frequency to rarely. The default for 1980 was normal. So far I'm liking rarely as my league leader comes in around the neighborhood of 50-70 for the year.

Really enjoying following this. Thanks for sharing your choice of settings, recalc, etc. It's very helpful to a newbie's learning curve.

Another suggestion I'll make is to consult this page and find the proper BABIP for the season you want your stats to be based on. The game inflates it by 2-4 points, and that can make a lot of difference even though it doesn't sound like much. Even if you're progressing through history, I would ensure that you have the proper BABIP on your Stats & AI page using that BB-Ref page.

I think you're right about the rarely setting with stolen bases, but I'll have to monitor my game's SB attempts more closely to know for sure. 1984's default is rarely, but I have been bumping it up to normal, which may be a mistake. I have yet to see a player get much past the 60 mark amongst the leaders, but I haven't done many test seasons at all, so maybe it is alright.

Welcome splat58! Good to have another random debut person. Our numbers are growing. We might be able to count them on two hands now!
