Expansion Success Story: Portland Mist

This Dynasty was created on OOTP19, played on 20, and will continue on 21.

MLB decided to expand to 32 teams for the 2019 regular season and balance the leagues into 4 divisions of 4. The two new teams are the Montreal Expos (NL) and the Portland Mist (AL). The Colorado Rockies moved to AL.

The four division winners will be the sole playoff teams, no Wild Cards. No Interleague Play either.

Both the Expos and Mist participated in an expansion draft with meager findings.

The first owner in Mist history is Eric Cabrera, an economizer only giving 39M to payroll.

The minor leagues are stuffed, even featuring two AA clubs.

The first manager in Mist history is Joe Maddon, fresh from leaving the Chicago Cubs (the Angels never occurred in this reality).

The first stadium is Intel Stadium in Portland, Oregon. The outfield wall is 9 feet high all the way across. Its 424 to dead center and 329 down the lines.

It has a retractable roof, to protect to the heavy rain patterns in Oregon. It has real grass like Arizona. It seats 50,000 fans.

The uniforms are green and white (seen below).

The first couple seasons will be briefly summarized here and then will be well documented starting in year three.

The first season the team finished with 78 wins for 3rd out of 4 teams in the American League West Division featuring the Oakland A's, Seattle Mariners, and Los Angeles Angels.

All things considered 78-84 was a great inaugural season.

In the 2019 draft we selected 1st overall and reached on a SP that looked like he could be a once in a generation hitter. Luis Macia, nickname Twig. We assigned him to learn 3B upon signing.

2nd round- RP Sergio Medina
3rd round- 1B Andrew Vaughn
4th round- RP Freddie Peppers
5th round- 3B Nicholas Quintana

Our top players in season 1...
  • LF Raimel Tapia .310 AVG 8 HR 78 RBI 21 SB
  • 1B Rowdy Tellez .304 AVG 38 HR 100 RBI
  • 3B Ryon Healy .255 AVG 27 HR 80 RBI
Our top pitchers in season 1...
  • SP Jose De Leon 11-10 173K 4.38 ERA
  • RP Sam Tuivailala 6-6-25 85 K 1.74 ERA
Owner Eric Cabrera raised payroll 12M to 51M.

In the first off-season we acquired OF Tommy Pham from the Rays and 1B Bobby Bradley from the Indians

The 2020 season (year 2) did bring a 1st place finish in the division and our first playoff birth. 85-77 record.

Our top players in season 2...
  • LF Raimel Tapia .297 AVG 10 HR 51 RBI 32 SB
  • RF Tommy Pham .270 AVG 40 HR 78 RBI 19 SB
  • 1B Bobby Bradley .270 AVG 31 HR 72 RBI
Our top pitchers in season 2...
  • SP Jose De Leon 14-12 234 K 4.01 ERA
  • CL Michael Feliz 7-7-26 108 K 3.36 ERA

We lost first round in the playoffs, but was a major accomplishment for a two year old team with a light budget and only one free agency crop.

2021Season

The Mist enjoyed a playoff run in 2020 and look to keep moving into a true contender. We have a ton of bright spots on the roster and a few places we could make improvements. Our success has gone to our owners head who is expecting much more even faster.

He was thrilled with our record. He expected .500 and we made the playoffs. He wanted to see us upgrade SS and was not completely satisfied with us acquiring Andrelton Simmons during the 2020 season. He wanted us to increase attendance to 43000/gm and was unhappy that we only reached 42000/gm.

Eric Cabreras new goals: Win a championship, upgrade SS, improve steals (we were 12th in MLB), increase attendance to 43,000/gm despite our market being below average and our fan loyalty as poor, and interest at 74%. He desires us to build a Champion by 2025.

With what money? He increased the payroll budget to 95M! In 2021 this is still a low 26th overall.

We decreased tickets to $14 average to try to increase attendance.

We consolidated our two AA teams into one in Dimsdale. We sold the Oklahoma City club to the Expos.

Extensions
  • SP Felix Hernandez reached the threshold for his vesting option. He will make 7.5M after making 11M last season. He leads active MLB in innings pitched. Second in active strikeouts.
  • RP Paco Rodriguez re-signed

Retirements
SS Zack Cozart, Manager Joe Maddon, Bench Coach Ned Yost

Personel
  • Signed Zack Cozart as a bench coach (2 years)
Signed Manager Terry Francona to a 5 year deal.
Signed Hitting Coach Jeff Branson after letting go of underperforming Ryua.

Awards
AL Gold Glove- Tommy Pham

Transactions
We are interested in adding a big bat and a couple big arms. If we can be creative with payroll on two then we can trade for a third.

We traded LF Raimel Tapia, SP Trevor Rosenthal, 6M cash, and 2 minor leaguers to Expos for MLB ready #8 SP prospect (Alexander).

We signed international free agent Yao-Pang Tann. Tann is a middle infielder that projects as a good hitter. He is 25 years old with a selfish reputation, but we are hoping that wears off.

We signed SP Jose Quintana to a 6 year deal with two massive team options. The first three years are 15M per, then a big jump. We will need to be making money by then.

We signed OF Bryce Harper to a 8 year deal with a player opt out clause after three years. 23M per the first three.

Fan support up only 10% after these moves.

League Transactions
Cardinals traded Fowler to Reds for Long
Cardinals signed Arenando

Salter should solve our 3 hole spot and is better overall than Bradley. He can catch in a pinch also. Fans were shocked by this trade and we hope it doesn't hurt attendance.

SP Lahera re-called

Same day trade to win over fans. We acquired 2B Robinson Cano from rival Mariners for a minor league reliever. Mariners are paying the final year of Cano's contract. He will take Sandy Leon's roster spot and give us an extra bat and pressure on Tellez at DH. Salter will backup catcher if needed.

2022 Season

We wanted a World Series run with Bryce Harper in the fold, but injuries down the stretch and poor pitching and hitting led to a disappointing 2nd place finish. Yankees prevailed over Cubs. Looking at the roster we have huge holes developing in LF and CF. With Pham's decline and Almora's limitations. Is Rooker ready? We need another top pitcher as DeLeon showed he isn't a number 2 and will miss part of the season anyway. Could the Dragon (Devenski) be stretched into a starter? The bullpen could use a refresher, its the same group from the inaugural season. Can we get a catcher better than Nido? Should we just wait on Elih Marrero? Is it time to move Tellez and is Candelario a piece we are truly happy with? Segura and Bauer are looking for paydays so they are both gone. I guess this roster isn't as ready as we had hoped.

League Rule Changes
Wild Card is back. It was gone since the 2019 expansion, but its back. There will now be a 5th playoff team in each league. The Wild Card team will be the team with the best record without a division title. This team will play a 5 game series with the worst division winner for a chance to play the #1 seed in a seven game series. The #1, #2, #3 teams will get a week break during the Wild Card round.

Retirements
  1. Manager Terry Francona
  2. Robinson Cano
  3. Felix Hernandez
  4. Tommy Pham

Owners Report
He was unsatisfied with our 2nd lace finish. He was thrilled with Tann at SS. We matched his attendance expectations. He still sees us as having time to win.

His new goals are to win a championship, upgrade 2B (doesn't like All-Star Brandon Lowe???), Improve Steals (we are 13th), and continue to build a championship by 2025.

With what money? 110M, a 15M increase. However, 13 players are arbitration eligible and we expect 11M in raises if we don't move players of negotiate cheaper deals. The eligible players are very interested in long term contracts on an expansion team with turn-style managers (Maddon/Francona).

I was given 3 more years as GM.

We raised ticket prices to $16

Awards
AL Silver Slugger - Bruce Harper
AL Rookie of the Year- Twig Macia
AL MVP- Bryce Harper

Team Transactions
We traded CF Albert Almora and Rp Carl Edwards Jr. to White Sox for gold glove candidate CF Charlie Tilson.

Signed new manager Luis "Auggie" Alguacil to a 5 year deal. At age 59 he isn't a retirement risk. He has been Cleveland's bench coach for the last three seasons with win totals of 103, 102, and 96. He favors kids and speed and is a new school sabermetrics manager. We are hoping Auggie represents a bright future for the Mist.

Signed free agent OF Tyrone Taylor to minor league deal
Signed free agent SS Nick Ahmed to minor league deal

Signed international free agent OF Kein-lung 'KL' Thum. The 25 year ld has an amazing eye and good speed, he has the potential to be a starter on the Mist by seasons end.

Signed free agent C Elias Diaz to compete for backup

League Transactions

Spring Training
Trying to make sense of this roster and get healthy for the season. Word out of re-season camp is how major league ready 1B/LF Blake Billinger is anyhow he might be the best looking prospect in baseball. We will wait for spring injuries to others and have them all around in case injuries find us. DeLeon is injured. Nido and Lowe do not look as good as a year ago. We have more battles than a contender typically has but we are still hopeful.

Signed LHP Jerry West, 2B Corey Spangenberg, LHP Tony Cingrani, and SS Jean Segura

INJ- SP Miguel Lahera out for season with torn labrum. He will be missed.

2023 Season

We are really good, but we can get better and we can win it all. It starts here in the off-season. Surprisingly Eric Cabrera sold the team to Jorge de los Santos who is way hands-off owner but he has been thrifty in other businesses. He has given a player budget of 120M which only allows for arbitration raises and no real improvements. We will have to get creative. We need a 2B because Segura is going to ask for millions again. We may turn to another rookie. We have a couple 2B in the pipeline.

New Owner Goals
de Los Santos wants us to have a winning record and build a championship team by 2027.

Arbitration
None of our eligible players desire to discuss long term deals.

With our budget we now have 500K to spend in free agency after arbitration and trading away RP Sam Tuivailala.

We are raising ticket prices $2 and hope to pack out Intel Stadium.

Awards
Two former Mist players win Gold Gloves (Almora and Na)

2023 Regular Season
We are expected by experts to be the best in the AL with around 109 wins. Top 10 hype for Macia, Billinger, Thum, Harper, Quintana, Alexander, De Jesus, and Feliz. The goal is clear. World Series champions.

APRIL
6 We traded SP Shelby Miller (refused demotion) with cash to Dbacks for minor league 2B Keagan Washington
18 SP Anthony Banda placed on DL with shoulder inflammation (3 months), SP Tarnok called up from AAA
19 OF Paraoubeck activated from DL, OF Diaz re-assigned to AAA
20 CL Michael Feliz needs bone spur surgery on throwing elbow (4 months). Placed on 60 day DL. CL Jon Ortega called up.
23 CF Charlie Tilson placed on DL with shoulder tendinitis (4 weeks), CF Josh Weiss called up.
25 We have defensive issues in the outfield. Thum in left is an average defender, but his crazy high OBP makes him worth it. Harper has declined in right field ability so much he is way below average. His hitting is such a plus we need him. If we it Harper at DH then Billinger must play OF or 1B. Is he really better? If 1B, then where does Salter play?

We could try Harper at C. He played there in high school before joining the Nationals.

We traded a minor league P to Dbacks for former Mist RF Marcel Ozuna. Dbacks are paying Ozunas whole contract (10M). OF Weiss re-assigned. OF Paraoubeck re-assigned. OF Pillar called up.

Padres traded C Austin Hedges to Mariners
Mariners traded All-Star SP Edwin Diaz and minor league 1B Tim Brookes to Mist
Mariners traded CL Jeff George to Tigers
Tigers traded RP Chris Flexen to Mist

Adding Diaz has fans excited.
We swapped our worst two starters and a prospect for the best starter in the league, a serviceable arm, a starting 2B, and a decent prospect.

Diaz signed a 3 year extension with Mist

RP Darlin Jimenez called up, OF Rooker re-called, OF Luis Zamora called up

Zamora is an exciting hitter but we lack defense in the OF between Rooker and Zamora. Pillar is the lone CF with Tilson out.

AUGUST

Contraction ideas are swirling. The Expos, who entered the same years as the Mist are in sad shape with no money and no fans. The Rays, Twins, Marlins, and Dbacks are in similar boats, although the Dbacks have fair weather fans and the Marlins are really good.

8 1B Brookes re-assigned to AAA, C Marrero re-called, Sp Tarnok placed on DL with strained biceps, RP Jimenez re-called
17 SP Quintana tossed a 12K shutout of Indians
22 AL Player of the Week- CF Eloy Jimenez

Rockies on to ALCS

Our offense disappeared on us. We only scored 8 runs in 5 games, three of which were in Denver, CO of all places. It is disappointing and leaves us with more questions than answers. Our team looked stacked, but we can't get over the hump.

Macia would have been out for the rest of the playoffs with his concussion (5 weeks)

Rockies went on to lose the World Series to the Wild Card Dodgers.

2024 Championship Season

Are we as good as we look on paper? Is this roster unbalanced? Do we need new leadership? Diaz, Jimenez, and Jimenez were good additions but Harper's contract is already an albatross (so he opted in for 23M instead of testing free agency). Fans still love him, but he has no defensive position.

To make things worse, owner Jorge de los Santos has asked me to cut payroll by 10M, and to win the World Series by 2027. How do those goals make sense together?

Personel
  • Pitching Coach Mike Maddux retired
  • Bench Coach Zack Cozart, has been released
  • Pitching Coach Santos Hernandez signed (great reputation with power pitchers)
  • Bench Coach Jed Lowrie signed (local Oregon player)

League Announcement
  • No contraction
  • Montreal Expos have relocated to Charlotte, NC
  • Tampa Rays have relocated to Austin, TX

Awards
  • AL Silver Slugger- 3B Twig Macia
  • AL Cy Young- SP Jose Quintana

Arbitration
13 players eligible for huge raises

3B Macia accepted a 10 year deal at a 10M average with player opt outs after year 5. Could potentially keep Macia in Green and white until he is 36.

SS Gimenez accepted a 7 year deal at a 7M average with no opt outs

OF Jimenez not interested in long term

Transaction
We traded DH Bryce Harper, 2B Luis Urias, and three low prospects to Astros for 2B Enmanuel Valdez, AAA CL Gabe Carrig, AA LF Jim Peters, A 3B Carlos Jo. McCleary and R SP Jon Coulson

Houston took on 70M/4y left giving us huge savings. Fan support rose to 97% after Macia's extension but dropped to 88% after this trade. Valdez could start at 2B. Carrig should compete for bullpen role, Peters in MLB ready.

CL Michael Feliz signed 2 year extension

We traded SP Anthony Banda (7M) and two low level prospects to Rockies for C Dom Nunez and A LF Yeikel Blandin

We signed 38 year old SP Corey Kluber, 1 year, 7M

We signed 2B Jose Altuve, 1 year, 7M

10 teams made trade offers for SP Henler DeJesus (nope)

We traded 2B Brandon Lowe and OF Marcel Ozuna to Rockies for OF Drew Weeks

Players were upset at losing Lowes leadership but he was disgruntled. Weeks killed us in the ALDS and has a chance to start with us.

Fan support has reached 100%, but loyalty is below average

League Transaction

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!!

World Series MVP- Li-ben Situ

The Portland Mist began in 2019, 6 years later we are the Champions. This isn't as fast as the Dbacks (4 years) in 2001, but it is fast. It's hard to believe that this all started with Rowdy Tellez and Ryan Healy and a payroll of 38M and now we have an amazing young team that can get better.

2025 Season

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS. Can we do it again? What will it take? Can we keep the team together? Is there anything to add? Jose Quintana is now 36 years old and Corey Kluber is 39, so a major part of the rotation is old.

Our owner is thrilled with the title but still wants me to cut payroll. Here are his goals for me...he wants another championship, upgrade 2B, cut payroll to 120M, dump Brandon Nimmo, and build a consistent contender by 2029.

Portland market size has increased to Average. That is really good news.

Budget set at 150M
GM contract was extended 4 more years.

9 All-Star RF Eloy Jimenez reminded us that his contract is up and at age 28 he has no
more arbitration He would like a long term contract but he is looking for 25-30M per
year plus an opt out. This is really tough.
13 All-Star Teams Selected- Twig Macia got the most fan votes. Six Mist Players voted in
as AL starters. Manager Auggie selected his own pitching staff naming Six Mist pitchers
to team as reserves.

21 AL Player of the Week- 3B Twig Macia
23 With Kevin Bortnick, Nick Bitzko, and Andy Weiss in the minors we are shopping
Jimenez. We tried offering him 17M per year and he countered with 32M. We can land NL MVP Booby Harrison from Charlotte Cyclones if we add Lief Espinoza. We are looking for a top 10 prospect and if that prospect plays OF, that's cool too because Thum is gonna cost too much as well. Our money is going to Macia, Billinger, Situ, Gimenez and the pitching. The Tigers, Reds, and
Giants have leaked out that we are discussing trades with their win now ballclubs.

Signed All-Star SP Edwin Diaz to a four year extension starting after 2026. (50M)

24 We sadly traded RF Eloy Jimenez with All-Star RP Kennan Pippy, 2B Enmanuel
Valdez, SS AJ Graffanino too Tigers for top prospects SS Steve Cacchio & SP Dan
Beck & LHP Randy Rosario

Cacchio is ranked 3rd in all of baseball, and Beck 33rd. This is a good haul for Jimenez,
however, he is a 28 year old power hitter in his prime that just helped us win a World Series. This trade was made ONLY because of his financial requests.

Rosario takes Pippy's place in the bullpen.
OF Christian Robinson called up from AAA.

Billinger will play OF, Altuve will DH, and Espinoza will play 2B.
Cacchio will start at AAA <--- we believe he is one year away from being a younger Bobby Harrison (league MVP)
29 We acquired SP Rob Kaminsky from Cleveland (who had asked for a trade). They will
pay 90% of his salary, making him a low risk way of improving the rotation (missing De
Jesus and Kluber declining).
31 AJ Ramos and Corey Kluber are showing their age, and have really dropped in
crispness on their pitches.

2026 Championship Season

We were unable to defend our Championship and our rotation is getting even older and we need to try to shore up the defense.

Our owner is thrilled with the playoffs but still wants me to cut payroll. Here are his goals for me...win another title, cut payroll to 130M, increase profit to 20M, build a regular contender by 2031.

My owner has contradictory desires and it has already cost us. We dumped All-Star Eloy Jimenez when he could have helped us defend the title because he was going to be too costly. This is counterproductive.

So I have decided this...I will go for the Championship goals because they make sense and I will not make attempts to cut payroll if it hurts our competitiveness. If I get fired. I get fired.

Fan Loyalty has increased to Average. This is great news.
Budget set at 160M

Jose Quintana (35M) offered us a 15M pay cut if we bring back Eloy Jimenez

SP Corey Kluber (age 39) did not meet his vesting option.

Arbitration
Not offering QO to Corey Kluber, Tomas Nido, Danny Salazar, or A.J. Ramos (Nido was the last original Mist, other than Flexen who wasn't here the whole time. Nido has been great but he wants to start now and we are comitted to Marrero)

Signed 1B/OF/DH Blake Billinger to long term deal avoid arbitration. It starts out cheap (8M) but is pricey later (22M).

Awards
  • Silver Slugger 3B Twig Macia
  • Cy Young Award- SP Edwin Diaz

Team Transactions
Traded SP Ian Swann to Braves for two way player Triston Casas.

Casas led the NL in wins with 20 and ERA with 2.20. He also won the Silver Slugger for P with an average over .300 and 8HR. We will try him at DH on his days off.

Traded minor SP Jon Coulson to Angels for RP Doug Peters and minor C Sergio Castro

We signed RF Eloy Jimenez to a 7 year deal 19M per. He was asking for 30M per when we traded him to Detroit at the trade deadline. Jose Quintana offered to take a pay cut to help us sign him, however that may only prove helpful for a year or two. The fans are elated. The owner must think I'm ignoring him, because I am. We forfeit a 1st round pick to the Tigers for this signing but we already got their top 2 prospects when we traded him.

We signed C Nick Cuiffo to a minor league deal with Spring invite

We traded LHP Pat Newberry, RHP Diarlin Jimenez, RHP Steve Hoisington, and 2B Omari Dunnock to Padres for RHP Logan Lombana (NL Holds Leader). Lombana will be our stopper.

Added SP Jorge Alaniz, LF Nick Bitzko, LF Andy Weiss on 40 man roster to protect them from Rule 5 draft.

We re-signed C Tomas Nido and offered him open competition to start. Nido is the sole original Mist.

Fan interest heading into Spring is 100%. Bringing back Jimenez and Nido and acquiring Casas has the city talking Mist.

All our starters except LF (Billinger/Thum) are ranked in top 10 at their position. Our bullpen is underrated in our estimation.

Pre-Season Projections have us at 105 wins with 8 of the top 10 offensive players and 3 of the top 10 pitchers in the AL. (Gimenez, Jimenez, Macia, Situ, Espinoza, Billinger, Peters, Diaz, Quintana, Casas)

Spring Training
Very little drama this year. We are no nonsense focused on winning the World Series. The 5th starter in the rotation and starting catcher are the only real competitions.

March 3- SS Andres Gimenez out 4 weeks with oblique strain. Opens door for Thum to claim leadoff duties as a DH or LF while benefitting Steve Cacchio at SS.

April 2- RP Koda Glover suffered a herniated disc- out 1 week, will miss opening day.

29 We traded 2B Lief Espinoza, RP Logan Lombana, (A) SP Alpha Osagie, (A) SS Steve Morrisey to Orioles for All-Star Esteban Serrano, (AA) 3B Danny Fenlon, and 7M cash.

Espinoza has power but is our weakest hitter with Cacchio behind him at the same position. Serrano is an ace we need as Quintana and Diaz get older. We negotiate a team friendly extension with Serrano as he has missed all of this season with an elbow injury. His first game for us is his first game for 2026.

Last season we made some mistakes with the roster heading into the playoffs and defending our 2024 title. This year I am risking my job by not cutting corners with the roster in an effort to win another World Series. Jimenez is back in the fold but the pitching anchors are aging. MVP seasons from Macia and Situ and the young arm acquisition of Serrano, and top prospects Rainville and Beck in the bullpen makes us hopeful.

2027 Season

We are the Champions again! I refused to cut the budget and it paid off. We have some salary issues to work through with some of the kids due to be paid now. Should be interesting.

Our owner is thrilled with the title but wanted me to cut payroll. He was obviously happy with the title and I even made him the profit margin he desired but I did not cut payroll.

Here are his new goals for me...win a 3rd title, cut payroll to 130M, keep building a consistent contender.

Our budget is 170M for player salaries

Retirements
SP Jose Quintana (expected Hall of Famer) retired and we have retired his number 62.

Arbitration-
Regular raises except for big hikes for Marrero, Casas, De Jesus, and Peters, none of whom are interested in long term offers at this time.

Awards
AL Reliever of the Year- CL Zi-yang Fen
AL Silver Slugger- 3B Twig Macia
AL Silver Slugger- 1B Li-ben Situ
AL MVP- 1B Li-ben Situ
AL Manager of the Year- Auggie Alguacil
AL Cy Young- SP Edwin Diaz

Team Transactions
We traded LF KL Thum (12M), SP Henler De Jesus (8M), RP Stephen Keller (2M), C Tomas Nido (5M), LF Nick Bitsko, and AAA SP Josh Weaver to Baltimore for backup top prospect CF Luis Quintanilla, IF Jose Antonio Gomez (AAA) CL Randy Wehking, SP Alpha Osagie, CL Joe Wilmoth, and 1B Teagan Greer.

Fanbase upset at the move, KL was an entertaining player, Nido was a Mist
original, and De Jesus always seemed to have huge potential. We cleared some big $ without creating any holes.

We are sold on Kennan Rainville and Dan Beck BOTH in the rotation next year.

Thum didn't have a starting role, and Nido was a hardly used backup catcher.

Quintanilla gives us a potential huge star in CF, allowing Peters to move to LF.

Billinger to 1B and Situ to DH.

After Casas complaining in the playoffs of fatigue for playing DH, he will not be given priority.

C Kale Ledford signed a minor league contract with Spring Invite. he will
compete for backup C

2B Jose Altuve re-signed a 1 year 1.7M deal to provide offensive depth. He
still wrecks LHP.

League Transaction (Bad year for FAs)
  • CHA traded NL MVP 2B Bobby Harrison to MIN for two top prospects
  • POR traded LF KL Thum to BAL for two players
  • WAS signed SP Forrest Whitley
  • ATL signed RF Seth Beer
  • DET signed SP Carlos Martinez
  • LAA signed CF Jeison Rosario
  • KC signed 3B Tyler Nevin
  • POR signed 2B Jose Altuve
  • WAS signed CF Victor Robles
  • STL signed LF Wei-sng Choe (international FA)
  • SEA signed SS Logan Warmoth
  • TEX signed 2B Scott Kingery
  • TOR signed LF Mike Trout
  • HOU signed SP Mike Soroka
  • PIT signed SP Trevor Rosenthal

Pre-season
National Media is questioning the move of Jim Peters to LF where he doesn't grade out as well. People are also speculating that Peters has been playing over his head and could regress.

MVP Twig Macia is raising money to help the Portland area and we funded the Twig Macia Foundation.

National Media predict over 100 wins for the Mist again but also giving an OUTRAGEOUS prediction that HR king Li-ben Situ will hit 62HR as a full time DH. Also, putting it out there that Aydan Nauss (borderline MLB) would be a top 10 pitcher. We might be getting trolled.

2027 Spring Training
As Champions we have many roster spots set. The starting rotation loss two members in Quintana's retirement and De Jesus departure by trade. We have a rookie going for starting CF and our CF going for LF, that could shake out differently than we expect.

March 6- SS Orlando Garcia tore his rotator cuff (out 4 weeks)
March 21-SP Kennan Rainville will miss 3 months will a sore elbow. Placed on DL.

2028 Championship Season

For the second straight season I refused to cut the budget and it paid off...well almost the second time. The expensive members of the bullpen are testing free agency and our power core Li-Ben Situ wants 42M per. A price we would have to painfully balk at. Any kids ready? After giving him a year off from hitting maybe we make Casas a two way player again?

Our owner is thrilled with big season but wanted me to cut payroll. However, he has given up on that and now wants me to build the farm.

Here are his new goals for me...win a 3rd title, build a top 6 farm system, while building a consistent contender.

Our budget is down to 160M for player salaries. THIS IS FRUSTRATING BECAUSE WE ARE JUST GOING TO BE WORSE!

Fan Loyalty has increased.

2029 Season

We are the World Champions again. It feels great, we are really proud of our team and would like to keep it rolling. However, my owner is asking me to cut spending again. He also extended my contract 4 more years, so maybe I don't care

Here are his goals for the 2029 Season...win a 4th championship, cut payroll to 140M, find a top prospect, build a top 6 farm system, build a dynasty by 2033

Contracts
  • RP Koda Glover bought out of 9M contract
  • C Austin Hedges option did not vest
  • 3B Twig Macia decided not to opt out of his contract and will make 18M
  • RF Eloy Jimenez offered some salary back to encourage our spending (this is something Jose Quintana once did to bring Jimenez back)

Awards
  • AL Gold Glove 2B- Steve Cacchio (x2)
  • AL Gold Glove LF- Jim Peters (x2)
  • AL Silver Slugger DH- Luis Espinoza
  • AL Manager of the Year- Jose Alguacil (x2)
  • AL Cy Young Award- Esteban Serrano

Team Transactions
We traded OF Christian Robinson and AAA SP Deshawn Prelow to Orioles in exchange for AAA players SS Dylan Antuna, RF A.J. Brown, RP Josh Emery, RP Joe Maddaloni, and 1B Mike Murray

We traded SS Orlando Garcia to Twins for RP Jahiem Mayze and Dwain Ledrew

We signed C Elih Marrero to a 7 year extension. 18M for 3, player opt out, 16M for 3, then vesting for 18M. We decided he is worth paying for compared to what we would be replacing him with.

We signed two catchers to minor league contracts with Spring Invites...Carson Kelly and Adam Kerner.

We traded 1B Eric Porter to New York Mets for RP Pete Stonger, RP Alfredo
Guerrero, and 3B Jake Faust

League Transactions
  • 3B K. Bryant to CHW
  • RF S. Beer to CIN
  • SS F. Lindor to CLE
  • SP D. Norris to NYY
  • SP A. Plutko to NYY
  • 1B N. Pratto to STL
  • RP K. Tamura acquired from AZ by BOS

  • 3B N. Arrendo to CHC
  • SP T. Spickerman to AZ
  • CL K. Giles to PIT
  • RP K. Glover to SD <---compensation pick received

World Baseball Classic

  • Team Canada- SP Aydan Nauss, SP Kennan Rainville, RP Leith Gilberds,
  • RP Dwain Ledrew, 1B Whip Schurman
  • Team Cuba- CF Luis Quintanilla, LF Randy Arozarena
  • Team D.R.- RP Randy Rosario, RF Eloy Jimenez, 2B Luis Espinoza
  • Team USA- RP Mitch Smalley, 2B Steve Cacchio, 3B Twig Macia

7 2B Steve Cacchio named AL player of the week
9 We traded AAA SP Butch Smikle to Yankees for RP Bilal Lefevre, (AAA) SP Zion Sainte, and (AAA) IF Sergio Tapia
26 With our offense struggling and Billingers big payday coming up, I started shopping him around. Market is thin, I will have to sweeten the pot to unload him.

RF Eloy Jimenez hit for the cycle vs KC
28 1B Teagan Greer re-assigned to AAA, 1B Donte Tesfai called up from AAA
29 We traded 1B Blake Billinger, OF A.J. Brown, RP Joe Wilmoth, (AA) 1B Juan Febus, and (A) CF Mitch Sadler to Astros for #1 prospect OF Mike Plumb and (AAA) CL Brad Franklin

1B Mike Murray called up
OF Randy Arozarena re-called from AAA

1B plans...Tesfai and Murray will share until someone claims it. If
nobody does, Greer will get another look, if not Casas will play their often, if that is too straining, Espinoza will try it.

SP Esteban Serrano shutout the Red Sox at Fenway

AL Player of the Month- 2B Steve Cacchio
AL Pitcher of the Month- CL Rory Boatswain

JUNE
3 SP Kennan Rainville placed on 60 day DL with torn back muscle. Out for 4 months. He has a chance to return by October, RP Zack Warstler re-called (Gilberds to join rotation)

7 SP Dallas Keuchel reached his 200th career win
20 RP Doug Peters placed on DL, RP Zack Warstler re-assigned to AAA, RP Pete Stonger called up, SP Jahiem Mayze called up as bullpen help
25 Back on top of power rankings.

None of the 1B are showing life.

OF Mike Plumb is making the injury to Jimenez easier to take. He might take Quintanilla's time when Jimenez returns.

We traded low minor leaguers 1B Kevin Young, SP Josh Emery, SP Jim Hammer, SS Gene Baidoo to Charlotte for 1B Mike Spiece (a projected five star player who was picked up off waivers from Reds by Cyclones and then traded to us.)

13 1B Donte Tesfai re-assigned to AAA, 1B Teagan Greer re-called from AAA
14 Traded All-Star C Elih Marrero (18M per) to Yankees with IF Mike Beers in exchange for C Mike Feliciano and AA SS Dave Greene. This was to cut costs and underproductivity.

Fans are upset, as Marrero is seen as critical to our pitching staff, but we believe in Feliciano's abilities.

18 SP Dallas Keuchel placed on DL. Out 6 weeks, SP Zion Sainte called up from AAA
19 17 year old international free agent 1B Alfredo Moreno signed. We landed three giant prospects but will be out of the international market next
season
22 After some disappointing contract extension conversations with Gold Glove LF Jim Peters we have decided we should trade him for value. He desires 20M per.

We traded LF Jim Peters and AAA SP Jamie Tomiak to Indians in exchange for CF Rogelio Mena, A CL Steve Fordera, and AA SP Juan Flores. Mena should be able to start for us in CF, moving Plumb to LF and Jimenez back to RF. If not Quintanilla will get another shot.

We traded 1B Donte Tesfai to Charlotte for RP Juan Banegas

We will give 31 year old Banegas an opportunity to start. Our rotation is too thin without Rainville, Serrano, and Keuchel.

RP Randy Wehking re-assigned to AAA

Fan interest has decreased 7% with the losses of Marrero and Peters

26 LHP Randy Rosario signed 1 year extension, IF Jose Antonio Gomez signed a 1 year extension

DL, RP Juan Ramirez re-called from AAA
31 RP Zach Warstler signed a minor league extension and called up to MLB, SP Tristan Casas signed a 4 year extension, RP Travis Lakins placed on DL with open blister (2 weeks?), LHP Leith Gilberds starting rotation experiment is over. He is back in the pen.

Trade Deadline Issues: Our rotation is really thin, so is the bullpen due to injuries.
SP Keuchel hamstring Out 4 weeks
SP Rainville back Out 2 months
SP Serrano elbow Out 7 weeks
RP Lakins finger Out 2 weeks
RP Smalley torn elbow Out 9 months
LF Plumb torn thumb Out 2 weeks

Rotation at the moment is Casas, Beck, Sainte, Banegas, Mayze

As a 10 year old franchise that has 8 playoff appearances and 3 World Series titles, other teams are not being helpful in trade talks.

Braves Crowned Champions

Turns out when the Braves used all their pitchers to win game 4, it turned the momentum in this series and we lost 4 in a row.

I am sick of the Braves.

With the roster moves made this year, making the World Series was ahead of schedule (yes, the nucleus is playoff tested, but the new youngsters were not).

2030 Championship Season

If we are the every other year team, then this off-season we are building a Champion. The roster is mostly set, it's a matter of keeping everyone paid and happy. We probably could use another top of the line starter or bullpen arm is all.

Here are the owner goals for the 2030 Season...win a 4th championship, increase profit to 21M, find a top prospect, build a top 6 farm system, and build a dynasty.

Payroll set at 180M

Retirements
Scouting Director Tom Allison

Arbitration
Most players due modest increases.

Big fish aren't interested in long term deals yet
  • Kennan Rainville 3M increase
  • Rory Boatswain 3M increase
  • Steve Cacchio 7M increase
  • Rogelio Mena 2M increase

Testing free agency
  • RP Juan Banegas
  • SP Dallas Kneuchel
  • C Mario Feliciano (might chase)

Awards
  • AC Reliever of the Year (AAA) CL Randy Wehking
  • AL Gold Glove 2B- Steve Cacchio (x3)
  • AL Reliever of the Year - CL Rory Boatswain
  • AL Silver Slugger DH- Luis Espinoza
  • AL Manager of the Year- Jose Alguacil (x3)

Twig Macia finished 3rd in MVP voting

Team Transactions
  • Signed new Scouting Director- Dock Doyle
  • Re-signed backup C Carson Kelly
  • We traded SP/1B Tristan Casas, 1B Teagan Greer, and (A) C Sergio Castro to
  • Mets for 8 time Gold Glove catcher Daniel Flores. Mets retained 25% of Flores
  • remaining salary. Our pitchers will love pitching to Flores. Getting him at age 29 is like getting Yadier Molina in his prime.
  • Signed OF Sean Lozinski to a 1 year deal (minor league deal with MLB option)
  • Signed OF Arturo Fragoso to a 1 year deal (minor league deal with MLB option) These signing put pressure on our centerfielders
  • Signed SP Junior Navas to a 5 year deal 23M per. Navas could be our ace. It does cost us a 1st round pick, but we feel better about him than we did Casas, especially with Flores behind the dish. Navas cited Flores as a huge reason for choosing Portland.

The league clearly doesn't believe in Mike Spiece at 1B like we do. We have fielded 10 trade offers that included starting 1B.

Rule 5 Draft- Selected RP Mat Lynn (he could make opening day roster)

Charlotte called and offered us the return of 1B Donte Tesfai (whom we could use with Casas pinch hitting ability now gone). We traded disgruntled (AA) SP Danny Hill and (AA) RP Brad Franklin.

We are ranked 30th at 1B (low view of Spiece) and 23rd in CF (low view of our platoon).

We are ranked 1st at 2B (Cacchio) and SP (Rainville), 2nd at SS (Gimenez) and RP (Smalley), 3rd at 3B (Macia), 4th in RF (Jimenez) and at C (Flores)

League Transactions
  • POR acquired C Daniel Flores for SP Tristan Casas and parts
  • CHC signed SP Connor Nurse
  • CHC signed 3B Tyler Nevin
  • LAD signed SP Landon Leach
  • POR signed SP Junior Navas
  • HOU signed CL Wladimir Pinto
  • BOS signed SP Adberto Azolay
  • TOR acquired OF Luis Morales from STL
  • STL signed RP Mike Rathman
  • TOR signed RP Jose Declerc
  • ARI signed C Mario Feliciano
  • ATL signed OF Tristan Pompey
  • LAA signed 3B Joshua Lowe
  • CHC signed SP Karlos Morales
  • BAL signed C Matt Olham
  • NYY signed CF Jordan Adell
  • LAD signed RP Juan Banegas
  • WAS signed RP Grant Holmes
  • SF signed LF Nomar Mazara
  • CLE signed SP Chris McCoy

2030 Regular Season
APRIL
11 Started the season with two series losses and a 1-5 record. Players complaining of a World Series hangover. There is plenty of time, but geez they look terrible.
13 HC Mark McGwire suggested batting Plumb second, with Cacchio, Espinoza, Macia, Jimenez sliding down one spot. The product was a 10-2 win. Maybe there is something there.
15 RP Mitch Smalley activated from DL to minor league rehab assignment
22 Early Power Rankings have us sitting at 28th with our 5-10 record.
25 2B Steve Cacchio suspended 2 games for fighting after being HBP

Record- 11-13 4th place

MAY
1 RP Mitch Smalley activated from rehab assignment (will setup)
RP Juan Ramirez re-assigned to AAA
RP Bilal Lefevre moves to middle relief
9 All-Star SS Andres Gimenez signed a 5 year extension at 15M per to stay in Portland. As the leadoff hitter of a 4 time Champion team we had to retain him.
12 Rule 5 RP Mat Lynn traded to Pirates for AAA player
LF Sean Lozinski called up from AAA
20 LF Sean Lozinski re-assigned to AAA
OF Jeremy Bogusch called up from AAA
22 We traded SP Dan Beck, OF Jeremy Bogusch, OF Sean Lozinski and minor league SP Juan Bacilio to Blue Jays for red hot slugger RF Ismael Aguirre, SP Luis Arredondo, and minor league CL Kyeong-min- Um

Beck has always struggled with consistency as a starter, even in the playoffs, and doesn't want to relieve. Our offense needs a lift and Aguirre is lighting the world on fire. He will start in RF vs RHP and Jimenez will vs LHP. Arredondo is more consistent than Beck and if not we have Stogner and Sainte in AAA.
30 5-2 record with Aguirre in lineup has us tied for first place!

Record- 31-20 1st
AL Player of the Month- RF Ismael Aguirre
AL Pitcher of the Month- SP Jahiem Mayze

JUNE
10 #1 in Power Rankings
13 1B Donte Tesfai reassigned to AAA
Utility man Sergio Tapia called up from AAA
20 RF Eloy Jimenez placed on DL with back spasms
RP Randy Wehking called up from AAA
24 IF Sergio Tapia re-assigned to AAA
1B Donte Tesfai re-called from AAA

Record- 49-29

JULY
1 RF Eloy Jimenez activated from DL to minor league rehab assignment
2 Assistant GM Jeff Kingston signed 4 year extension
Pitching Coach Santos Hernandez signed 3 year extension
Hitting Coach Mark McGwire signed a 2 year extension

I, however, received a shrouded threat from the owner for not saving him money or finding a top 20 prospect. I have delivered 3 league titles and a 27th ranked prospect.

Traded RF Eloy Jimenez (16M) with RP Randy Wehking, RP Pete Stogner, and RP Min-han Yaung to Twins in exchange for top 20 prospect SP Andy Harrison (assigned to AAA)

Eloy was the only place to find money and still gets is breaking even instead of allowing my owner to pocket 21M. The playoff gate money should help though. RP Dwain Ledrew called up from AAA
SS Andres Gimenez placed on DL with oblique strain
SS Dave Greene called up from AAA
6 RP Dwain Ledrew re-assigned to AAA
SP Andy Harrison called up from AAA for bullpen stint and playoff eligibility
10 Eleven Mist players selected to All-Star Team. 8 Starters!

Starters- SP Kennan Rainville, C Daniel Flores, 2B Steve Cacchio, 3B Twig
Macia*, SS Andres Gimenez, LF Mike Plumb, RF Ismael Aguirre, DH Luis
Espinoza

Bench- SP Luis Arredondo, CL Rory Boatswain, RP Leith Gilberds
12 AL wins 4-2
13 SS Andres Gimenez activated from DL
SS Dave Greene re-assigned to AAA
16 OF Luis Quintanilla placed on DL with herniated disc
CF Arturo Fragoso called up from AAA
17 Traded SP Esteban Serrano (10M) with minor leaguer SP Bob Jefferies to Blue Jays in exchange for OF Sean Lozinski (returned), and minor league CF Gabe Hinojosa

Serrano was another way to cut money without losing major production. We like Lozinski's hitting profile and Hinojosa has a chance to steal Mena's CF job someday

OF Lozinski put on MLB roster
CF Arturo Fragoso re-assigned to AAA
RP Juan Ramirez re-called from AAA
RP Andy Harrison to rotation in Serrano's spot.
1B Donte Tesfai re-assigned to AAA
IF Sergio Tapia re-called from AAA

26 We enter 3 game series versus Oakland only 1 game back of them for division lead.
27 IF Sergio Tapia re-assigned to AAA
OF Luis Quintanilla activated from DL
28 Lost Oakland Series 1-2 and sit 2 games back

AUGUST
12 Big Series @ Oakland down 5 games in the division
14 We lost series again 1-2 and now sit 6 GB (tied for Wild Card)
19 CF Luis Quintanilla re-assigned to AAA
CF Gabe Hinojosa called up from AAA
23 Another key series vs Oakland (best team in baseball). We sit 5 games back.
24 We won quick 2 game series and sit 3 GB
Claimed former Mist C Tomas Nido off waivers - placed in AAA
26 AL Player of the Week- Steve Cacchio

SEPTEMBER
1 Roster Expansion - SP Zion Sainte, RP Dwain Ledrew, RP Bobby Riggio, 1B Mike Murray, 1B Donte Tesfai, 2B Sergio Tapia, 3B Chris Kidd, Rf Jarrod Conwell, CF Luis Quintanilla, CF Arturo Fragoso, C Tomas Nido

76 wins, 56 losses. 3 Games Back
5 3B Twig Macia hit an inside the park homerun @ Chicago in loss
8 SP Kennan Rainville left game with an elbow injury in 7th inning of brilliant start. Rainville missed the World Series last year with an injury

We enter another critical series vs Oakland in Oakland. 3 games series, we sit only 2 games back

9 DH Luis Espinoza named AL Player of the Week. Espinoza rediscovered his power stroke, launching 7 homeruns last week.
10 SP Kennan Rainville diagnosed with tender elbow. He will take one start off.
RP Zion Sainte will get the spot start
11 We won the series 2-1 and cut the lead down to 1 game. There are 19 games to go and 3 games left to play against Oakland.
17 C Daniel Flores broke his kneecap and will be out for the rest of the season (4 month recovery). Flores was placed on 60 day DL. C Jake Rogers (age 35) called up from AAA. The journeyman catcher signed a minor league deal with Mist in the off-season with a 1.5M pay out if called up. C Carson Kelly to start

20 Rainville had to skip another start
Sweep in Houston helped us catch the A's. We are tied for 1st!
23 DH Luis Espinoza named AL Player of the Week again hitting 6 more homers
25 Rainville had to skip a 3rd start but will return next time around

We begin final series vs Oakland. We are up 1 game this time.

27 94th win of the season clinches a playoff berth. Something that was actually in doubt after a horrible start.

Cacchio said, "This is great and all, but we want to officially win the division and the World Series, of course."
28 3B Twig Macia left game with an injury. Unknown at this time
29 We swept the A's. Clinching the division title
Macia has bone marrow edema in his knee. He will miss the rest of the regular season. He has opted for a painful marrow drain surgery that would allow him to return in 15-20 days. He will still miss some playoffs.

AAA SP Travis Lakins announced his retirement (age 36)

AL Player of the Month- DH Luis Espinoza

OCTOBER
2 SS Andres Gimenez reached his 2000th career hit
We end season on a 6 game winning streak

Record- 99-63

None of the Mist players led the league in anything positive. Gimenez led league in caught stealing

3B Twig Macia is still recovering from bone marrow edema and will miss some games. RP Bilal Lefevre was left off the playoff roster in order to house Tesfai's pinch hitting abilities. 15 of these players were on the playoff roster that lost the World Series last year.

This was not an easy season. We saw the beginning of a drop in production from Twig Macia (age 33), Luis Espinoza lost his power swing for the first 2/3 of the season, and the starting pitching had to be rehauled on the fly. But we won the division with 99 wins. We have won the World Series every other year and the pattern is in our favor. Plus, the Atlanta Braves didn't make it this year in the NL.
