The final team for the inaugural season of the CBL was announced today, and the Portsmouth team will be known as the Clippers. The team will use dark blue and light blue as its colors, and both uniforms will feature modern sleeve striping. The Clippers nickname represents the nautical culture of Portsmouth. Fan loyalty is expected to be very good.

The Clippers will be owned by Bob Sullivan, 73, of Rochellewood, Washington. Sullivan made his fortune in shipbuilding, and he is known for being somewhat frugal but patient. He has hired Jason Ellis as GM and Jose Carbajal (pictured) as Manager. Carbajal, originally from Newport, is known as one of the top baseball minds in Newland. Newport’s fans were disappointed to see him leave the city, and the historically friendly rivalry between Portsmouth and Newport could be intensified if he has success here.

Portsmouth’s municipal stadium will be sold to the Clippers, and it will be renamed Arcadia Journal Ballpark. The Arcadia Journal is a regional newspaper based in Portsmouth, and it purchased the naming rights as part of an aggressive expansion strategy. The ballpark was built in 1961 and seats 49,000 fans. It will be a pitcher’s park in every way except triples.

March 2, 1981

The Continental Baseball League got underway today with its first ever Spring Training games in Clinton. All six teams are staying in the island resort city, and they will be playing each other in exhibition games throughout the month of March. Many of the top pitchers in the new league saw action today, as each team started their ace.

Park City and their crafty left-hander Earl Gordon beat Newport 6-5. Fireballer Bo Pratt, who is expected to be an Outstanding Pitcher Award candidate, took the loss. Liberty downed Portsmouth 7-4. Legendary 37-year-old pitcher Rich Cates took the win, with 4 scoreless innings, and Paco Vasquez got the loss. Irondale’s Lowell Holmes had the top performance of the day, pitching 4 hitless innings with 3 strikeouts in a 2-1 win over Capital City. Scott Allen was credited with the loss.

March 31, 1981

Opening day of the Continental Baseball League’s inaugural season is tomorrow, and fans all around Newland are showing their enthusiasm. Top pitchers Lowell Holmes and Rich Cates will face each other as Irondale opens at Liberty. Capital City will host Park City, and Portsmouth is playing at Newport.

Spring Training wrapped up on the 26th of March. Irondale finished with the best record at 14-10, but all six teams were bunched together, with the last place team only 4 games back.

The Baseball News Network also released its predictions for the upcoming season today. They are predicting a close race for the championship, with Capital City edging Irondale by 2 games. Liberty and Park City are expected to be around .500, and Newport and Portsmouth should bring up the rear.

CAPITAL CITY
The Senators are a balanced team, expected to finish 1st in Offense and 2nd in Pitching. Only 2 hitters and 2 pitchers are in the respective Top 10 lists.

IRONDALE
The Steelers are expected to finish 5th in Offense and 4th in Pitching. The team is built on speed, as they are expected to finish 1st in Stolen Bases and 6th in Home Runs. No hitters are in the Top 10, but they have 3 pitchers in the Top 10, including both Holmes brothers, Lowell and Larry.

LIBERTY
The Giants are expected to finish 4th in Offense and 3rd in Pitching. 1 hitter and 1 pitcher are in the Top 10’s, including Rich Cates, who at 37 is finishing up a storied career.

PARK CITY
The Patriots are built around pitching, and they are expected to finish 6th in Offense and 1st in Pitching. 1 batter and 2 pitchers are in the Top 10’s.

NEWPORT
Newport is a slugging team, expected to finish 2nd in Offense and 5th in Pitching. It is a team of extremes, as they are expected to finish 1st in Home Runs and 6th in Stolen Bases, both by wide margins. They are also expected to finish 1st in K’s and 5th in BB’s. 5 hitters and 2 pitchers are in the Top 10’s. Additionally, superstar SP Edward Davis should return from Tommy John surgery early in the year, and if he can regain his old form, Newport could be a dangerous team.

PORTSMOUTH
Portsmouth will likely struggle this year, expected to finish 3rd in Offense and 6th in Pitching. They are also expected to finish 6th in both K’s and BB’s. 1 hitter and no pitchers are in the Top 10’s.

A couple more notes before getting in to the first season...

Please note that all screenshots posted have been resized to 800 pixels wide so they fit better in the forum. To see the original resolution images at 1280 pixels, just click on them. I think this will work going forward, but I'm also open to suggestions.

I've been playing ahead to refine how this is going to work. Everything I've written was "in the moment", though, and I'm not going to go back and edit anything using knowledge of what's going to happen later. One advantage of playing ahead is that I can post the almanacs for each season on my website and link to the box scores and logs for key games. This was the easiest way I could think of to do that.

There is one caveat to posting entire almanacs ahead of time, though. Clicking on links within the box scores or game logs will let you look at the rest of the almanac for that season, which clearly contains spoilers - just a fair warning if you'd rather follow along as I write. As far as I can tell, sticking to box scores and logs should be safe from spoilers.

Lastly, I will link to the player page from the prior season's almanac when writing about a player, but of course this doesn't work during the first season due to spoilers. For now, I'll throw in links to pictures where appropriate.

Monthly Wrap-Up
Newport got off to a sizzling start in the inaugural season of the Continental Baseball League, finishing the month 19-9, good for a 5-game lead. Four teams are within a game of each other, and Portsmouth is in last place at 9 GB.

The big story of the year so far is Newport’s pitching. Before the season started, William McKinney and Bo Pratt were projected to be Top 10 pitchers, but the Navigators were predicted to finish 5th in pitching. Then, superstar Edward Davis came back from his injury on April 6th and reclaimed his spot at the top of the rotation. The biggest surprise, however, was number four starter Martin Vazquez, who had an amazing month, going 5-0 in 6 starts and winning the Pitcher of the Month award. Each of these four pitchers now has an ERA below 2.00, and they have combined for a 13-4 record. As a team, the Navigators are leading the league in every major category, they have the top 3 HR hitters, and the top 4 ERA pitchers. Only time will tell if they can keep up their dominance.

Players of the Week
April 6 – 1B Jim Lake, PC, 7-14, 1 HR, 2 RBI
April 13 – SS Wesley Bennett, PC, 10-20, 2 HR, 5 RBI
April 20 – 3B Shawn Bernard, IRO, .444, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 5 R
April 27 – LF Harry Cooper, CC, 14-29, 1 HR, 6 RBI

Players of the Month
Batter – C Al Jackson, POR, .333, 6 HR, 22 RBI, 12 R
Pitcher – SP Martin Vazquez, NEW, 5-0, 1.90 ERA, 42.2 IP, 31 K
Rookie – 3B Steve Martin, LIB, .353, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 12 R

Top Performances
Batting – April 8 – SS Wesley Bennett, PC vs. LIB, 2-3, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R, 1 BB
Pitching – April 22 – SP Craig Maier, POR vs. PC, 9.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K

Major Transactions
None

Major Injuries
April 13 – SP Rich Cates, out for 12-13 months due to torn flexor tendon (elbow)

Get to know…Rich Cates

In this month’s “Get to know” feature, we are taking a nostalgic look at the long career of Newland legend Rich ‘Four Eyes’ Cates. Cates, 37, was the most successful pitcher ever in the old amateur leagues, racking up a record of 165-97. He was named the country’s Pitcher of the Year 4 times in his career. He was born in Bethany Hill, Jackson, a town of about 11,000 people near Marion. After a stellar career at the University of Hamilton in Richland, he started his amateur career in 1966. His POY awards came in 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1977.

He has always been known as a clubhouse leader, and he has a great work ethic, although he is not very intelligent. Cates has always been an excellent all-around pitcher with no glaring weaknesses, although he has generally relied more on movement and control than pure stuff. He uses a fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup, but his age is starting to show, and he has lost much of the velocity that helped make him so dominant as a younger man.

Cates was a longtime advocate for a national baseball league, and he was as excited as anyone to see it finally happen. Unfortunately, his dreams of leading Liberty to the inaugural championship were dashed in his third start of the season, on April 11th. In the first inning of that game, he left with a sore elbow, and two days later, he was diagnosed with a Torn Flexor Tendon, which will require 12-13 months of rehab. His final stats for 1981 will be 0-2, with an 8.00 ERA, 7 K’s, and 4 BB’s, in 9.0 innings. Here’s hoping that Four Eyes can come back next year healthy and show everyone why he was so successful for so long.

Games of the Month
April 6 – Liberty @ Newport
It was a game for the ages, as the two most successful pitchers in Newland’s history faced each other for the first and possibly final time. Rich Cates, 4-time winner of BNN’s Pitcher of the Year award, was coming off a strong 6 inning performance on opening day, a game he lost 1-0 to Irondale. Edward Davis, also a 4-time winner of the POY award, was making his first start of the season after recovering from last year’s Tommy John surgery. Unfortunately for fans, Cates had a rough day, giving up 7 runs in 2.1 innings, as Newport went on to win 8-1. Davis gave up 1 run in 8 innings, and 1B Kyle Bailey was named the player of the game, going 3-4 with a HR and 4 RBI. Rich Cates had a season-ending injury in his next start, and at 37, it is unclear if he will attempt a comeback. This game could be remembered in future years as a figurative passing of the torch to the 29-year-old Davis.

April 19 – Liberty @ Irondale
Liberty took a 3-2 lead into the 9th, and extended it to 4-2 in the top of the inning. In the bottom of the 9th, Vincent Robinson led off with a double. After a strikeout, Tim Higgins roped an RBI single to make it 4-3. A fielder’s choice resulted in the second out. Then, Carl Green hit the first pitch he saw for a walk-off 2-run homer.

April 23 – Capital City @ Portsmouth
Al Jackson hit a walk-off grand slam with no outs in the 9th to give the last-place Clippers an 8-6 win.

April 30 – Portsmouth @ Irondale
Portsmouth’s struggles continued, as the Clippers scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th to tie the game 5-5, only to lose on a 2-out walk-off single in the bottom half.

Monthly Wrap-Up
Newport continues to be the talk of the baseball world, as they have maintained a 5-game lead by going 15-14 in May. Park City is in 2nd place, and the remaining 4 teams are all within 3 games of the Patriots.

Three different Navigator pitchers lead the league in ERA, Wins, and K’s, but there are signs that Newport might struggle to hold on to their lead. Starting pitcher William McKinney strained his hamstring on May 9th, and will be out for 3 months, effectively ending his season. Also, 42-year-old closer Alejandro Soto has been relegated to the setup role after surrendering 4 blown saves to go with 16 saves. 23-year-old Will McBride is taking over as closer, but questions remain about his work ethic. Meanwhile, catcher Dave Bartlett is leading the league in each of the Triple Crown categories, and he is making a strong case for the CBL’s first Outstanding Hitter Award.

Players of the Week
May 4 – 1B Antonio Marte, LIB, 12-22, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 6 R
May 11 – SS Tad Gill, NEW, 9-21, 2 HR, 5 RBI
May 18 – 1B Bob Hutchison, POR, 9-21, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 6 R
May 25 – C Dave Bartlett, NEW, 8-16, 3 HR, 6 RBI
June 1 – C Dave Bartlett, NEW, 9-23, 5 HR, 12 RBI, 5 R

Players of the Month
Batter – C Dave Bartlett, NEW, .366, 13 HR, 28 RBI, 21 R
Pitcher – SP Chad Hansford, IRO, 4-1, 2.84 ERA, 38 IP, 33 K
Rookie – 1B Antonio Marte, LIB, .333, 5 HR, 26 RBI, 10 R

Top Performances
Batting – May 26 – C Dave Bartlett, NEW vs. IRO, 3-3, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB
Pitching – May 28 – SP Edward Davis, NEW vs. IRO, 8.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 10 K, 1 BB

Major Transactions
May 7 – 1B Kyle Bailey, NEW, signed a 4-year, $54 million extension
May 25 – SP Edward Davis, NEW, signed a 1-year, $9 million extension

Major Injuries
May 9 – SP William McKinney, NEW, out for 3 months due to hamstring strain
May 20 – SP Larry Holmes, IRO, out for 4-5 months due to bone spur (elbow)
June 1 – SP Brandon Harris, LIB, out for 9-10 months due to torn ulnar collateral ligament

Get to know…Dave Bartlett

In this month’s installment, we are looking at catcher Dave ‘Rat’ Bartlett of Newport, who is currently leading the league in all 3 Triple Crown categories. Bartlett, at 33, has established himself as one of the top hitters in the game, winning 3 straight Hitter of the Year awards from 1977 to 1979. He also won the amateur league’s only Triple Crown in 1978. Born in Sussex, JA, he attended Island University in Clinton and started his career in 1969. He was the all-time amateur leader in Slugging Percentage and OPS.

Bartlett has a ‘me-first’ attitude, but he is an extremely hard worker. His strengths are his defensive ability at catcher, his power, and his eye. His primary weaknesses are speed and baserunning. He has taken full advantage of the opportunity to showcase his ability on a national stage, garnering 2 Player of the Week awards and 1 Batter of the Month award in the first 2 months of the season. He also set the CBL record with 3 home runs in a game on May 26th. Dave Bartlett is a big reason Newport is in 1st place, and we at BNN are looking forward to seeing what he’ll do for the rest of the season.

Games of the Month
May 7 – Capital City @ Irondale
Gregg Scott of Capital City pitched a gem, going 8 innings, giving up 5 hits and no runs with 5 strikeouts. When he left, the Senators had a 5-0 lead. Unfortunately, the bullpen couldn’t hold it, and the Steelers struck for an astonishing 6 runs in the 9th to win the game 6-5. All 6 runs were scored with 2 outs, and the comeback was capped by a runner scoring on a wild pitch.

May 11 – Liberty @ Park City
Liberty scored 3 times in the top of the 9th to win 7-5 against the rival Patriots. The loss dropped Park City to last place in the standings.

May 15 – Capital City @ Newport
Newport continued its pitching dominance, as Bo Pratt went 6 strong innings, giving up 2 hits, 2 walks, no runs, and 10 strikeouts. Pratt took a no-decision as Capital City’s John Mitchell matched him through 6. Newport’s offense finally broke through in the 7th, and the Navigators won the game 1-0.

May 16 – Liberty @ Capital City
An historic comeback occurred, as Liberty rebounded from a 12-2 deficit with an amazing 13 runs in the 8th inning to win 15-12.

May 25 – Newport @ Liberty
Starters Bo Pratt and Brandon Harris were both roughed up early, and the game entered the 9th with Liberty leading 7-6. Dave Bartlett crushed a grand slam in the top of the 9th to give Newport a 3-run lead, but Liberty roared back in the bottom of the inning, tying the game with a solo homer and a 2-run homer. The Giants finished off the comeback with 2 more hits, followed by a walk-off single, winning 11-10.

May 30 – Park City @ Irondale
Wesley Bennett of Park City smashed a 2-out 3-run homer in the top of the 9th to propel the Patriots to a 7-5 win in Irondale.

Monthly Wrap-Up
Newport struggled to maintain its lead, going 13-13 in June while dealing with two difficult injuries. They now have a 3 game lead on Park City, with Liberty and Capital City at 5 GB. Irondale and Portsmouth are virtually out of the race at this point.

Newport’s starters continue to top the league in ERA, with Pratt, Vazquez, and Davis holding down the top 3 spots. However, Park City has taken the lead in team Runs Against. Dave Bartlett was mired in a terrible slump throughout most of June, hitting only .217 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. He is no longer a threat to win the Triple Crown, but he is still tied for the lead in HR and 2nd in RBI. The Navigators are certainly counting on Bartlett to find his swing over the final 36 games. Youngster Will McBride has done okay in the closer’s role, notching 6 S and 3 BS. However, 2 of his 3 blown saves ended in Newport wins.

Another Newland legend went down with a long-term injury this month, as Portsmouth’s closer Marlon Given tore his labrum and is expected to miss 12 months. At 43 years old, this could be the end of his career. BNN is planning to profile Given in an upcoming “Get to know” feature.

Players of the Week
June 8 – C Clayton Lilly, PC, 8-19, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 2 R
June 15 – RF Jose Guzman, CC, 14-32, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 10 R
June 22 – 3B Steven Carney, PC, 10-25, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 6 R
June 29 – 3B Steven Carney, PC, 11-25, 3 HR, 13 RBI, 5 R

Players of the Month
Batter – 3B Steven Carney, PC, .359, 7 HR, 30 RBI, 21 R
Pitcher – CL Myles Brooks, CC, 9 S, 0.64 ERA, 14 IP, 17 K
Rookie – CF Terry Hall, CC, .327, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 18 R

Top Performance
Batting – June 6 – C Clayton Lilly, PC vs. CC, 4-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 R
Pitching – June 3 – SP Travis Lung, LIB vs. CC, 8.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 13 K, 2 BB

Major Transactions
June 6 – Harry Cooper, CC, signed a 1-year, $7 million extension
June 25 – Trade: Portsmouth gets 25-year-old SS Enrique Morales, Newport gets 29-year-old 3B Armando Rodriguez and a low-rated prospect

Draft Highlights
#1 – Capital City – SP Roosevelt Jones, 20, Washington A&M
Jones has a ton of talent, with 3 plus pitches and an okay slider. He has some work to do to get ready for the big leagues, but he projects as a top-flight starter. His stamina could be a concern.

#2 – Portsmouth – SS Tim ‘Cooter’ MacIntosh, 21, Humphreyfield College
MacIntosh is the surest thing in this draft class, and he is already playing with the Clippers, hitting .286 (4-14) in 5 games. He projects as an outstanding singles and doubles hitter that will never strike out, but he has almost no power and rarely takes walks. He is an excellent middle-infield defender, and he has elite speed and stealing ability. He should be a starter for a long time to come.

#3 – Irondale – C Ron Wilson, 20, University of Hamilton
Wilson has some power and a good eye, but he is average defensively and terrible on the base paths.

#4 – Portsmouth – CL Norm Watkins, 21, Washington A&M
Watkins has the potential for great stuff, with 2 elite-level pitches.

#5 – Liberty – LF Juan Jose Molina, 20, Washington Tech
Molina has a lot of power and is great on the base paths. He is only average defensively.

#6 – Park City – SP David Edwards, 20, Cedar Grove College
Edwards is an average prospect.

#7 – Newport – C Nolan Bird, 17, Maria Beach HS (Maria Beach, MA)
Bird is an average prospect.

Major Injuries
June 5 – LF Ken Bradley, PC, out for 5-6 weeks due to sprained thumb
June 10 – CF Jose Quintanilla, CC, out for 6 weeks due to partially torn labrum
June 14 – CL Marlon Given, POR, out for 12 months due to torn labrum
June 30 – CL Ray Gilliam, LIB, out for 8 months due to torn flexor tendon in elbow

Get to know…Steven Carney

Third baseman Steven Carney, 33, of Park City is this month’s featured player for our “Get to know” segment. Carney was born in Grand, JA, a town of about 18,000 people northeast of Farmington. Steven attended Washington State in Monmouth and started his career in 1969. He won BNN Hitter of the Year awards in 1973 and 1975. He was also the all-time amateur leader in TB, HR, and RBI.

Like his rival Dave Bartlett last month, Carney won two Player of the Week awards and the Batter of the Month award this month. He is now tied for the league lead in HR and leading the league in RBI. He is not much of a team leader, but he is extremely loyal and a hard worker. He is an average defender and not great at avoiding K’s, but he hits with a lot of power and is a great baserunner.

It is interesting to note that all 3 of our “Get to know” players this year were born in the state of Jackson, which has no CBL team. What do they put in the water up there?

Games of the Month
June 11 – Newport @ Irondale
Two of the league’s best pitchers squared off, with Martin Vazquez of Newport facing Chad Hansford of Irondale. Vazquez had the upper hand going to the bottom of the 8th, with Newport leading 6-1, but the bullpen let him down, as Irondale managed a grand slam and a 2-run double in the inning to go up 7-6. In the top of the 9th, the Navigators answered with a barrage of hits and scored 6 more runs. The Steelers scored twice more in the bottom of the 9th, but it wasn’t enough as Newport took the win, 12-9.

June 13 – Liberty @ Park City
It was another matchup of top pitchers, with Liberty’s Travis Lung facing Park City’s Earl Gordon. Both pitched very well, and the game went to the bottom of the 9th with Liberty leading 1-0. Batter of the Month Steven Carney roped a 2-out, 2-run single with the bases loaded to win the game in dramatic fashion for the Patriots, 2-1.

June 18 – Park City @ Newport
Emery Murdock of Park City got the start against Newport’s Edward Davis, and Murdock put his team in a position to win in the first game of a series between the top two teams in the CBL. The Patriots took a 4-1 lead to the bottom of the 8th, but 3B Mike Wiedle hit a 2-out grand slam to take the lead, and Will McBride shut the Patriots down in the 9th, giving Newport a 5-4 win.

June 19 – Park City @ Newport
In the 2nd game of an important series, Park City’s #1 Earl Gordon faced Newport’s #4 Bob Cole, giving the Patriots a big advantage. However, the Newport bats were hot all day and the Navigators took an 8-5 lead into the 9th. Young closer Will McBride was credited with a blown save, as he gave up 3 runs, including a 2-out, 2-run HR by Steven Carney to tie the game. In the bottom of the 9th, Dave Bartlett crushed the 2nd pitch he saw for a walk-off solo HR, giving Newport the 9-8 win. This was one of only two Bartlett home runs in the month of June.

Monthly Wrap-Up
Park City again made up ground on Newport this month, and they now sit at just 1 game back with 7 games to play. Liberty is 5 GB, so it is essentially a 2-team race for the inaugural CBL championship. Park City tied up the race several times throughout the month, but couldn’t get over the hump and take the lead. The Patriots host the Navigators for the final 3-game series of the season, and currently the Patriots hold an 11-10 edge in the season series. If both overall and head-to-head records end in ties, the tiebreaker will be complex, and the CBL’s backers are hoping that doesn’t happen.

In July, Dave Bartlett of Newport rebounded from an awful June to get his second Batter of the Month award this season. He has virtually locked up the HR crown and is 2nd in RBI. He also had his 2nd 3-HR game of the season. Newport’s Bo Pratt has also distanced himself from the competition in the ERA race, and he is also leading the league in K’s. Despite an 8-7 record, he has a strong case for the Outstanding Pitcher Award. Park City’s Steven Carney received a 4-game suspension on July 15 for arguing with an umpire and for a media tirade after the game.

Players of the Week
July 6 – C Roland Harris, LIB, 10-26, 4 HR, 12 RBI
July 13 – CF Reid Lee, POR, 11-30, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 10 R

Get to know…Marlon Given

This month, we’re looking at the long career of 43-year-old closer Marlon Given. Given was the most dominant relief pitcher of the amateur league era, and it is unfortunate that the CBL wasn’t formed until the twilight of his career. Born in Franklin, FR, he joined the Newland Navy as a submariner and didn’t start his baseball career until he was 27 years old. He was the all-time leader in Saves, earning 459, while #2 on the leaderboard had 193. Given was also the all-time leader in ERA at 2.02, as well as Opponent’s WHIP, Opponent’s OBP, and Opponent’s OPS. Lastly, he had the top 2 seasons ever in Saves.

In his prime, Given had no weaknesses, and even had starter-level stamina, but with only 2 pitches (sinker and slider), he became a dominant closer instead. He has always been a great clubhouse leader, which has helped extend his career. He was also extremely durable, never missing any time due to injury. He appeared in at least 45 games and had at least 22 saves each year from 1965 to 1980.

Unfortunately, Marlon Given’s ironman streak ended this year, as he suffered a torn labrum on June 10th. With an expected recovery of 10 months, it is unclear whether he will attempt a comeback at 44. His final stats for 1981 are 13 Saves, 1 Blown Save, a 1-4 record, and a 2.94 ERA. He pitched 33.2 innings in 30 appearances, netting 17 K’s and 4 BB’s with only 1 HR allowed.

Games of the Month
July 4 – Newport @ Park City
Park City fought back from an early 6-1 deficit, scoring their final 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to win 7-6.

July 5 – Newport @ Park City
For the 2nd day in a row, Park City came back from a late deficit, scoring 1 run in the 9th to tie the game and adding another in the 10th to win 4-3. The Patriots would go on to win 7-3 the following day to complete the series sweep and pull into a tie for 1st place for the first time in months.

July 9 – Portsmouth @ Newport
Portsmouth scored 4 runs in the top of the 1st, only to have the Navigators claw back and tie it in the 8th. Newport’s Tad Gill hit a walk-off solo HR in the 10th for a 5-4 win.

July 14 – Portsmouth @ Capital City
The Senators’ Dustin Gray hit a 3-run HR in the bottom of the 9th to win the game 7-6.

July 14 – Newport @ Irondale
Newport managed to tie the game 4-4 by scoring 1 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th, but Irondale responded in the bottom of the 9th with a walk-off single by pinch-hitter Kevin Small to win 5-4.

July 19 – Capital City @ Newport
It was a matchup of star pitchers Matt Haley and Edward Davis. Tied 5-5 after 9 innings, Capital City scored a run in the 11th, only to have Newport answer with 2 in the bottom of the inning to win 7-6.

July 25 – Capital City @ Park City
The Patriots built up an 8-1 lead, and then gave up 7 runs in the 9th, capped by a Guillermo Reyes grand slam. Park City was able to scrap across a run in the bottom of the inning with a walk-off sacrifice fly to win 9-8.

July 29 – Portsmouth @ Park City
Park City erupted for 23 runs, including 2 8-run innings. Portsmouth tried to make it a game by scoring 9 runs in the 9th, but fell well short, as the Patriots won 23-14.

July 30 – Irondale @ Newport
Irondale scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th to take a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the 9th, Dave Bartlett crushed a 2-out, 3-run homer to win the game 7-5. It was Bartlett’s 3rd HR of the game. He has accomplished that feat twice this season, and is still the only player to do it.

July 30 – Park City @ Liberty
It was a crazy game between two rivals, as Park City led 10-1 at the 7th inning stretch. Liberty found a way to make it a game, making it 10-7 after 8. Park City tacked on 3 more in the 9th, and Liberty’s comeback effort fell just short after scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th, losing 13-12.

Editor's Note

After a WAY too long hiatus, I'm picking this league back up again. After the last post, I had a hard drive crash and thought I had lost all of my OOTP stuff. Several months later, I was able to recover everything from the drive through a 3rd party service, but by then, I had moved on to other projects and kind of forgot about this. With baseball season starting up again, I'm excited to finally bring it back, and I hope you guys enjoy it. The next post will end the year and a half long cliffhanger - I'm sure many of you were on the edge of your seats.

Good to see this going again! One question about your map - which, as I said, is a major reason why I find a dynasty immersive: what is the physical scale of the country? Distance coast to coast? Is it about the size of the USA?

Truthfully, I hadn't really considered it. I guess I just assumed it was about the size of the U.S. Based on 1 degree of latitude being around 69 miles in real life, that actually makes sense with the grid I used. From north to south, Newland is about 42 degrees of latitude, which would be about 2900 miles. That's about the same distance across the U.S. from east to west. Now that I've figured that out, the distance between cities is easily estimated, and I agree that adds to the realism. Thanks for bringing it up!

The first month of the offseason was wild, as many of the top free agents were snagged. Portsmouth scored a huge coup by getting 3B Steven Carney, which should make them much better next year. Carney’s former team, Park City, also made a splash with 4 high-profile signings, including last year’s Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, Martin Vazquez. Defending champion Newport has been quiet, and after losing Vazquez and Wiedle, they will probably want to do something this offseason.

Spring Training begins today, and we at BNN are looking forward to another great baseball season. After September, the offseason was relatively quiet, with mostly minor players being signed. Aging legends Larry Holmes and Sherman Deal have new teams, while all-time great Marlon Given remains a free agent at age 44. Given should return from his torn labrum in mid-June, so he might get a look from a team then.

Spring Training came to a close on March 26th, and the Liberty Giants finished with the best record at 16-8. No other team was above .500. Opening day is tomorrow, and BNN has released their preseason predictions. It is worth noting that we predicted Newport to finish 5th last year, and they won the championship, so hopefully we do better this year.

We are picking Newport to repeat as champions, with Irondale in a close second. Newport had a couple of big losses in Mike Wiedle and Martin Vazquez, but their core group of pitchers will be tough to beat, and Dave Bartlett is still the best hitter in the league.

Irondale is not a great offensive team, but they have good starting pitching at the top of the rotation, with Lowell Holmes, Chad Hansford, and Lonnie Stewart.

Capital City will rely heavily on their pitching. The Senators have probably the deepest rotation in the league, along with last year’s Reliever of the Year Award winner, Myles Brooks.

Liberty is expected to do well offensively, but the Giants pitchers are inconsistent. There is some talent in the rotation, but they probably need an addition or two to really contend. Rich Cates has returned from his injury last year, but it doesn’t look like he’ll regain his old form, and he will start the season as a setup reliever.

Last year’s runner-up Park City made some solid additions, but we don’t think it will be enough to make up for the loss of superstar Steven Carney, and we’re picking them to finish 5th.

We love the offensive firepower of the new-look Portsmouth Clippers, but their lack of pitching will likely keep them in last place. If they can add a few good starters in the next few years, watch out. They have last year’s #2 draft pick Tim MacIntosh leading off, followed by Justin Cannon, Steven Carney, Reid Lee, and last year’s batting champion Al Jackson. Only Carney, at 34, is over age 30.

Major Transactions
March 29 – SP Edward Davis, NEW, signed a 6-year, $87 million extension

Monthly Wrap-Up
Newport got off to a sizzling start this season. After losing their opening day game, the Navigators won 12 in a row to get out to a big lead, and held on, going 21-7 in April, which is good for a whopping 7 game lead. Newport’s rotation is still the best in baseball, despite losing last year’s OPA winner, Martin Vazquez. Dave Bartlett also won his 3rd Batter of the Month award, and he is currently leading the league in all 3 Triple Crown categories. 24-year-old closer Will McBride is leading the league in Saves with 9, and he has a 0.56 ERA.

Get to know…Edward Davis

1981 Baseball Card

Edward Davis is our first featured player of 1982. Davis, 30, has a legitimate chance to go down in history as the greatest pitcher Newland has ever seen. Born in Irondale, he attended Washington State in Monmouth. Then, in 1973, he packed his bags and moved to sunny Newport to start his baseball career. Davis was a 4-time winner of the BNN Pitcher of the Year award, winning in 1975, 1976, 1978, and 1979. His 4 wins matched Rich Cates for the most all-time. Significantly, between 1973 and 1979, either Davis or Cates was named the Pitcher of the Year each year. Davis was Newland’s all-time leader in H/9, Opp. Avg, and Opp. SLG. He also had the 4 highest single-season strikeout totals.

Edward Davis has always been mostly a “stuff” pitcher, but he also has good movement, decent control, and excellent stamina. His slider is his best pitch, but he also has an excellent cutter and changeup. He is known as intelligent and hard-working. Last year, he came back from Tommy John surgery, but he didn’t dominate like he used to. He pitched well, going 9-8 with a 3.35 ERA in 24 games, but he was overshadowed by 2 of his teammates, who finished 1st and 2nd in the Outstanding Pitcher Award voting as the Navigators won the championship.

Just before opening day this year, Davis signed a 6-year contract extension to stay in Newport, so he is now locked up for a while. Newport is relying more on Davis to find his old self this year, as last year’s OPA winner is gone. He has started well, going 4-0 with a 3.32 ERA, but again, 2 teammates are pitching even better and overshadowing him. It’s a good problem to have, as Newport is dominating the league at the 1-month mark.

Games of the Month
April 10 – Park City @ Liberty
Gregory Metoyer of Park City hit a 3-run homer in the top of the 11th to lead his Patriots past his old team, 6-3.

April 10 – Portsmouth @ Newport
Portsmouth took advantage of Newport’s #5 starter in jumping out to an 8-2 lead, but Newport stormed back, scoring the final 9 runs of the game to win 11-8. The Navigators hit 5 homers in the game.

April 12 – Portsmouth @ Newport
Starting pitchers Paco Vasquez and Bo Pratt each threw 7 strong innings, but Pratt was a little stronger, as the Navigators won 1-0.

April 15 – Newport @ Capital City
Newport jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but the Senators managed to claw back and send the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, Jose Guzman hit a 2-out, walk-off single to win the game 9-8, ending Newport’s 12-game winning streak.

April 16 – Newport @ Capital City
The Navigators got their revenge in a big way, winning 15-1 behind William McKinney’s excellent outing. 10 different players hit safely for Newport.

April 19 – Liberty @ Portsmouth
After 5 innings, Liberty held an 8-0 lead, but Portsmouth scored 5 in the 6th to make it a game. Liberty scored a run in the top of the 9th to make the score 9-6, but 4 straight batters reached for the Clippers, capped by a walk-off 3-run homer by Pat Howard for a 10-9 win.

April 19 – Irondale @ Newport
Newport’s Dave Bartlett hit a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the 9th to win the game 4-3.

April 22 – Capital City @ Liberty
Pinch hitter Dillon ‘No Comment’ Reynalds capped a Liberty comeback with a walk-off 3-run homer off of reigning Relief Pitcher Award winner Myles Brooks, for a 9-8 win.

April 27 – Liberty @ Park City
Liberty’s Mike Wiedle hit a solo home run in the top of the 11th for a 6-5 lead, but Park City answered in the bottom of the inning with a walk-off 2-run single by Henry Fields. The Patriots won 7-6.
