The Cards You are Dealt: An almost APBA dynasty

So I’m digging thru my baseball books and notebooks, and I found the roster sheets I made for my 1983 APBA league. My first serious replay/sim league that despite being dice and pencil league lasted through the 1987 season (1984-1989 in real time). I thought it would be fun to set an OOTP league based on these rosters. Besides, CIE is still a ways away from the regular season, I need a league to actually play!

Each MLB team in APBA came with a 20 man basic roster and a 6 man supplemental roster. I used Lahmans to import the 1983 season and deleated all uncarded players. The 676 player we start the season with will never change. Draft was held based on my roster sheet. The very first draft? Twenty years ago I separated players by their primary postion and delt them out. Very scientific.

Engine is set to “Replay”; coaches, financials and injuries are turned off. Fatigue is on. Old League Park will be used for all teams. AI will control 25 teams, with trades set a very low.

Enjoy the stat dump, people.

Atlanta Sabres, NL West

Code:
Line up vs RHP
L Omar Moreno CF
L Tony Gwynn RF
R Mike Schmidt 3B
R Greg Luzinski 1B
S Tim Raines DH
S Tony Bernazard 2B
R Mike Heath C
R Lou Piniella RF
R Johnnie Lemaster	SS
I'd feel alot better about this lineup if Raines was leading off. Weak at the top and at the bottom.

Code:
Bench
L Rich Gedman C
R Steve Yeager C
S Pete Rose 1B
R Marty Castillo 3B
S Donnie Hill SS
S Jerry Hairston LF
S Lee Mazzilli CF
The switch hitters give alot of PH options. Right now, Tim Raines is the back up 2B, so if they are in contention, they may try to trade for one . . . but I don't know what the bait would be.

Code:
Rotation
L Vida Blue SP
R Rick Camp SP
R Dennis Martinez SP
L Mark Thurmond SP
R Dickie Noles SP
Ugly.
Code:
Bullpen
R Rick Lysander MR
R Warren Brusstar MR
R Bryn Smith SU
R Aurelio Lopez SU
R Tom Tellmann CL
Better than the rotation, but probably won't have much of an effect thanks to the starters. If they have leads, should do a decent job of closing it out--but will have to outslug the other team to be competitive.

This will be fun! I still remember the excitement I felt when the mailman delivered that first box from APBA. Somehow holding those cards, and blind-drawing players for made-up teams, added a sense of physicality that just hasnt been duplicated yet on computer. Thanks, Seth, for bringing fond memories back alive.

The day that box was in the mailbox - stuffed in, couldn't have fit if it was a quarter inch bigger - was easily the best day of every year. I could hear the mail truck come around every day, and I'd run out after he did. God I loved APBA.

And if you got the additional players, it was almost a religious ritual to carefully tear apart the cards so you don't rip them. APBA...best ever.

I was an APBA nut. I played baseball, basketball, football, golf and horse racing. If message forums existed back then, I could have been TigerFan.

Baltimore Snappers, AL East

Code:
Lineup vs RHP
R Amos Otis CF
R Julio Franco SS
L Chris Chambliss	1B
R Jesse Barfield RF
R Toby Harrah 3B
R Pat Tabler LF
R Manny Trillo 2B
R Rick Dempsey C
L Rob Wilfong DH
Solid defense, undervalued by APBA, but wtf is up with Wilfong at DH? But it is good to know that the AI thinks as much of Ken Phleps as real life GM's and managers did.

Code:
Bench
R John Rabb C
R Ozzie Virgil C
L Ken Phelps 1B
R Tim Foli SS
L Doug Frobel LF
R Rusty Kuntz CF
L Ricky Nelson RF
I see at least 3 guys who should be the DH. Come on: Rob Wilfong?

Code:
STARTERS
L Joe Price SP
R Mike Krukow SP
R Glenn Abbott SP
R Gaylord Perry SP
R Mike Scott SP
Price and Krukow are decent 3 and 4's, but they will get killed on the back end of the rotation.

Code:
Bullpen
R Jim Acker MR
L Mike Caldwell MR
L Tom Underwood SU
R Lee Smith SU
R Roy Thomas CL
Fairly decent bullpen. I'd think Smith should be the closer, but given the lack of flexiblity with the staff, using him in high leverage 7th and 8th inning siutations could work out. Overall a middle of the pack team at best.

I made cards for all my friends in 1987 and played an entire season against the actual teams. I think we won 120 or so games and I had ~80 homers

Hey, I was 11.

Boston Minutemen, AL East

Code:
Lineup vs RHP
R Willie Randolph	2B
R Jeff Leonard LF
R Dwight Evans RF
L Kent Hrbek 1B
L Dan Driessen DH
R Nick Esasky 3B
S Mookie Wilson CF
S Garry Templeton	SS
R Buck Martinez C
Good mix of speed and power. I really like this lineup, with Mookie and Garry at the bottom it is like having a second set of (admittedly sub-par) lead off guys.

Code:
Bench
R Jack Fimple C
L Denny Walling 1B
R Ron Jackson 3B
R Domingo Ramos SS
R Andy Van Slyke	LF
R Carmen Castillo	RF
S Jerry White RF
No one that really can push the starters, but outside of Jerry White, none of these guys will embarass themselves.

Code:
STARTERS
L Dave Dravecky SP
R Bill Laskey SP
R Juan Eichelberger	SP
L Steve Trout SP
R Jeff Russell SP
It is a good thing the lineup is solid, because I don't have much faith in this rotation.

Code:
Bullpen
R Gene Garber MR
R Dick Tidrow MR
R Bob Stanley SU
R John Butcher SU
L Dave Geisel CL
If Geisel keeps the closer job all season long, he'll challenge for the lead in blown saves. The real question of the pen is can Stanley get enough innings to qualify for the ERA title. If pitching wins, then this club won't.

California Surf, AL West

Code:
Lineup vs RHP
L Ken Griffey Sr.	1B
L Pat Sheridan RF
R Larry Herndon LF
R Carlton Fisk C
S Jerry Mumphrey	CF
R Tim Wallach 3B
R Carl Yastrzemski	DH
L Jerry Remy 2B
S Bryan Little SS
Griffey isn't the traditional lead off guy, but should do a decent job. They won't get anything from the Remy/Little black hole--over/under for Griffey RBI's: 35. Quality 3-6.

Code:
Bench
R John Mizerock C
L Daryl Sconiers	1B
R Wayne Krenchicki	3B
R Ed Romero SS
R Jerry Morales LF
R Jim Dwyer RF
R Jim Wohlford RF
Unimpressed by the bench. Dwyer is off the bench power and Krenchicki is fun to say, but don't think there is enough to help you win.

Code:
STARTERS
L Bill Krueger SP
L Mike Flanagan SP
R Dennis Eckersley	SP
R Jim Bibby SP
L Mike Madden SP
Unless Krueger, Flanagan and Eck combine for 60 or more wins (highly unlikely), there is no title in Cali. Bibby and Madden could have 120 walks each.

Code:
Bullpen
R Doug Bair MR
L Don Hood MR
L Willie Hernandez SU
L Jon Matlack SU
L Frank DiPino CL
Too many lefties. Not a problem playing the "basic game" of APBA, but in OOTP this will kill them.

Chicago Stallions, NL East

Code:
Lineup vs RHP
S Alan Wiggins LF
R Steve Sax 2B
R Doug DeCinces 3B
R Chet Lemon CF
R Tom Paciorek 1B
L Reggie Jackson	RF
R Luis Salazar DH
R John Wockenfuss	C
R Scott Fletcher	SS
Decent enough. This was Reggie's first "I'm old" season, and there isn't a whole lot of power, but will be competitive.

Code:
Bench
R Bobby Ramos C
L Len Matuszek 1B
R Jim Morrison 2B
R Mark Brouhard LF
L Max Venable LF
R Danny Heep RF
Not very strong--I do like Morrison as the utility INF, and I have a soft spot for Max Venable, but noone is there to pick up the slack thanks to Reggie Jax slump.

Code:
STARTERS
L John Candelaria	SP
R Fred Breining SP
R Neil Allen SP
R Mike Witt SP
L Bob McClure SP
Very good No. 1, decent middle part and iffy end. This rotation could surprise or be very average.

Code:
Bullpen
R Mike Warren MU
R Dave Beard MR
R Al Williams MR
R Tim Stoddard SU
R Ted Power SU
R Dan Quisenberry	CL
Will probably trade with California to get the lefty they need. I like this pen alot, if the rotation overachives, they will be in the mix in the NL East.

Seth, You ever make APBA cards out of Out of the Park team projects that you do? I do. One of these days I am going to make 64 teams from all different types of champions from all different types of seasons, and then roll a tournament.
