Editor's Note: I have decided to make some big changes this off season in the League. I find that I am missing the contract stuff that comes with free agency. I did not think I would. So we are instituting Free Agency in the default way. To facilitate this, I am running the "assign fictional contract" function now, so we will know what we have heading into the off season.

I am also enabling all the standard roster rules (options, waivers, minor league free agency, etc.) effectively immediately (except that there will be no compensation for lost free agents).

Also, this off season, we will expand the minor leagues by two levels, adding B League and C League affiliates to all the Major League teams (AA and A ball equivalents). The currently independent B Leagues will become the D Leagues and we will draft from them and expand the number of picks to 12.

They way this will be accomplished is that we will have our normal 6 round B League draft this winter. After the draft is over, all of the players left on the active B League rosters (including those newly promoted after the draft) will be transferred to the B League affiliates of the Major League teams. The team with the best record in the B Leagues will be assigned to the team with the worst record in the Major Leagues. 2nd best to 2nd worst, etc. After this is accomplished, the process will be repeated with the players on the active B League teams being assigned to the Major Leagues C League affiliates. After that, the B Leagues will become the D Leagues and remain independent.

I am also going to abolish my house rule that all my trades I initiate must be 1 for 1 deals. It is just too restrictive to be fun. I will crank the trading difficulty up to Very Hard and not have any house rules on how I can trade. I will not do this until this off season, though.

CF Esteban Mondolfo (30-R) was sent back to Vancouver (A) and OF Kim Springer (21-L) has been recalled. Springer has not hit all that great for the Mounties, but I figure he can hit (or not hit) as well as Rick Woodell has been doing...

Williams is 1-1 against us this season with one great game and one clunker.

Johnson pitched a CG 3 hitter last time out, allowing 2 runs.

The San Diego Padres are in town to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games in Seattle. We won 3 of 4 at their place, May 16-19. They are 11th in scoring in the PCL with 3.86 runs per game (Portland is up to 15th with 3.57!). Their hitters are hitting a healthy .260, but are 2nd to last in HR with 33 (Hollywood has 32). The Padres are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.25 per game (Portland is 8th with 3.95). Their hitters have only hit 33 HR, but their pitchers have only allowed 33, 2nd fewest in the League (KC has allowed 31). Their run differential is +40; ours is -25.

San Diego Padres (32-33 .492 11.5 GB tied for 4th place in the PCL West) at

Tomorrow is the trade deadline and I will be very happy to see it so that I will stop being bombarded with ridiculous trade offers for 1B Glenn Snowden (25-R). I have had one or two every day for the past week and a half and not one of them was even remotely close to being fair, much less tempting. We are not making any more trades this season.

San Diego Padres (32-34 .485 12.5 GB tied for 4th place in the PCL West) at

SD: Gordy Albrecht (25-R 3-7 3.81) vs. POR: Rondey Moe (26-R 0-2 2.75)

We beat Albrecht the one time we faced him this year, but only got 2 hits and 2 runs in 5.1 IP. He walked 6, though, and threw 107 pitches.

Last time out was Moe's worst game of the season for the Beavers. He only walked 1 and allowed 4 hits in 7 IP, but 2 of the hits were home runs and he gave up 4 runs in a no decision.

Well, the new roster rules have already bitten us in the behind a little. CF Brian Mitchell is ready to come off the DL, so I thought 1B/3B Rick Woodell (31-L) could use a little time in Vancouver (A) to get his stroke back. He thought otherwise and refused to be demoted. So the next candidate was OF Don Neumann (32-S), but he refused as well... So, we are down to asking for volunteers.... Unfortunately, 1B Kurt Cunning (30-R) drew the short straw.... I hope Woodell gets hurt, so we can bring Cunning back.... Though how he will get hurt sitting on the bench is problematic.... Maybe we can use him for beaning practice for our pitchers....

San Diego Padres (32-35 .478 13.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (30-37 .448 15.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

And now that we sent Kurt Cunning (30-R) to Vancouver (A), we have no right-handed bats left on the bench, except C Jim Shippy, who needs a day of rest.... PH Rick Woodell (31-L) strikes out.... Jose Julio lines a hit to left and Kuchta scores! 6 to 4, Padres. If we had a Bullpen worth anything, we would be winning this game... Jack Hinckley grounds a hit to center and Rojas scores! 6 to 5, Padres. Hinckley has his second straight 3 hit game! That does it for P Jose Preciado. New Pitcher: Glenn Stroh (27-L), who gave us a run on Thursday. Fernando Martinez grounds out to 1st, unassisted. He is going to be a free agent at the end of this season, but he is not making me want to give him an extension.... He's hitting .213 now since joining the Beavers....

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Garry Ayers (29-R), the next bumbling idiot to take the mound... With 1 out, Buddy Potts grounds a hit to center... With 2 outs, Del Hall takes an 0-2 pitch in the ribs... Norman Darcy lines a hit to left center and Potts scores... 7 to 5, Padres.

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Roy Tindale (25-R), their closer with a 4.10 ERA. 1 perfect inning against us this season. PH Brian Mitchell (21-L), in his first appearance in three weeks, lines a hit to right. Jack Hinckley grounds his 4th hit of the game to center! Fernando Martinez strikes out... That is his last at bat as a Beaver.... I know I said no more trades, but he has not helped us one whit and Los Angeles offered us the best reliever in Baseball, Hal Ockey (26-R), for him a few days ago... If they are still willing, I will make that deal before the deadline at midnight tonight.... Glenn Snowden up next and he swings at a 3-2 pitch and mashes it 454 feet to left!!!!! And THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!!!

Won - 8 to 7

We had 15 hits and made no errors
San Diego had 13 hits and made 2 errors

Duke McKenzie went 2 innings, allowed 3 runs, 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1.
RHP Jeff Gleason went 2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 home run and struck out 3.
RHP David Fuentes went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, a home run, and struck out 2.
RHP Garry Ayers went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits, 1 HBP and struck out 2.
Rich Larkin (W 2-3) went 1 scoreless inning (barely), allowed 1 hit, 2 walks and struck out 2.

Jose Preciado went 5.2 innings, gave us 5 runs, 12 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 4. He threw a WP.
RHP Roy Tindale (L 1-4 BS 2) got 1 out, gave us 3 runs, 3 hits, 1 home run and struck out 1.

RF Jose Julio had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. PH Brian Mitchell had a hit and scored a run. CF Jack Hinckley went 4 for 4 with a walk, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 1B Glenn Snowden had 2 hits with his 18th home run of the year and 4 RBI. 3B Fernando Mexicano hit his 18th home run and had 2 RBI. 2B Shannon Kuchta had 2 hits and scored a run. SS Juan Rojas hit a double and scored a run. PH Dave Risinger had a hit.

For San Diego, 2B Norman Darcy went 4 for 4 with 2 home runs (7 on the year), drew a walk and had 5 RBI.

Well, potty brats... I called up the Angels and they said they did not remember making the offer of RP Hal Ockey (26-R) for LF Fernando Martinez (27-L) and said that they would never do such a thing.... Well, where I come from, trading the League Leader in HR for a relief pitcher is considered rather stupid, so it seems it would be smart to do it the other way round, right? But they did not see it that way... So we are stuck with Martinez for the rest of this season... There are worse things, I guess.... He should eventually start to hit for the Beavers.... Besides, what other team can say that they have not 1, not 2, but THREE players all tied for the League lead in HR! Currently, there are five players tied with 18 HR: Dave McDowell (31-R) of San Francisco, Javy Puente (31-S) of Oakland and the three Beavers.

P Duke McKenzie (24-R) has been returned to Vancouver (A) and P Joe Hoehn (27-R) has been recalled. Hoehn went 0-3 with a 9.42 ERA earlier for the Beavers, but this guys is now 28-11 in A Ball with a 2.54 ERA. He is 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA since being sent to Vancouver. He deserves an extended shot.

San Diego Padres (32-36 .471 14.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (31-37 .456 15.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

SD: John Riley (26-R 7-4 1.92) All-Star vs. POR: Steve Muir (27-R 6-4 2.08) Gold Glove

Riley is their #1 starter. The Padres are now 1-6 against us. That 1 win was a 5 hit shutout by Riley. We have been on a nice run of hitting lately. If we can score some runs today, I will be confident that our offensive woes are in the past.

Muir has won his last 2 starts. He allowed 2 runs in 6.2 IP last time out.

The Seattle Rainiers are here to play a short 2 game series. They lost 3 of 4 at home to San Francisco over the weekend. We are 1-3 against them on the season and this is their first visit to Portland. They are dead last in scoring with 3.51 runs per game (Portland is 15th with 3.72). They are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.16 per game (Portland is 8th with 4.04). Their run differential is -44 and ours is -22.

Seattle Rainiers (22-46 .324 23.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (31-38 .449 15 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

SEA: Earl Rogers (27-R 4-10 3.42) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 4-5 2.63)

Rogers is their #1 starter. We have not faced him this season. He was 2-2 against us last year, including a 3 hit shutout. He has lost 8 of his last 9 decisions.

Johnson gave up 3 runs in 8 IP last time out and took a loss because we only scored 2.

Won - 8 to 6

We had 17 hits and made 3 errors
Seattle had 17 hits and made no errors

We tied our all-time record for hits in a 9 inning game!
And gave up just as many!
Also it is the second straight day that we have made 3 errors.

Our Bullpen is utter crap, except for Rookie Roy Huls (21-R).
Our team Bullpen ERA is now 4.41. Only Hollywood is worse (4.48), but not by much.

Bobby Johnson (W 5-5) went 6 innings, allowed 3 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 4. 115 pitches.
RHP Rich Larkin went 1 inning, allowed 3 runs, 4 hits and 1 home run.

CF Brian Mitchell went 4 for 4 with a walk and scored a run. LF Kim Springer had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBI. He has caught the Bob beaver bug, though, and now has 5 errors in 33 starts in left field. We will probably look to trade him this winter, even though he is the top hitting prospect in Baseball. PH Dave Risinger lines a hit to left and 2 runs score! 6 to 5, Rainiers. That sends P Jamie Lanier to the showers. New Pitcher: Ricky Johnson (36-R) with a 4.15 ERA and 33 H in 21.2 IP. PH Kim Springer (21-L) strikes out....

Top of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Roy Huls (21-R), the one decent arm in our pen... or is he?... With 1 out, Carlos Lopez lines a hit to center. He steals 2nd as Don Kelly strikes out. C John Roberts (29-L), a .172 hitter, grounds a hit past 2B Shannon Kuchta and Lopez scores.... 7 to 5, Rainiers. Dan McKee beats out an infield hit. The 14th hit of the game for Seattle.... 17 yesterday... This is supposed to be the worst offense in the PCL! Adam Carter grounds a hit to left and mercifully, the runner stops at 3rd and the bases are loaded... Ronaldo Entrevinhas grounds a hit to right and 2 runners score and RF Kim Springer gets yet another error.... His 6th in in only 35 games (33 GS). 9 to 5, Rainiers... Call to the Bullpen: Jeff Gleason (25-R). Brian Mitchell goes in to play right in a double switch. We only gain 1 spot in the lineup with it, but Springer is done in Portland... Luis Hernandez doubles to right center and 2 more runs are in... 11 to 5, Rainiers. I really do think it is impossible for these relievers to be this bad...

Do you want to hear more of the horrors that happened? Me neither... It will suffice to inform you that 8 batters reached base after the second out was made...

Lost - 14 to 5

We had 11 hits and made 4 errors
Seattle had 23 hits and made no errors

23 hits! 4 errors! That's 40 hits allowed in 2 games!

RP's Jeff Gleason (25-R) and Rich Larkin (22-R) have been sent to Vancouver (A) and RP's Jim Kokos (28-R) and Jennings Sims (29-R) have been recalled. At least, I will not keep hoping that Kokos and Sims will ever be any good....

LF Kim Springer (21-L) has also been sent back to Vancouver and SS Rich Cruz (30-R) has been recalled.

The Dallas Eagles are here to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair at home with the Royals, which is quite an achievement, the way Kansas City is playing this year. This is our first meeting this season. We were 1-7 against them last year. The Eagles are 5th in scoring in the PCL with 4.14 runs per game (Portland is 15th with 3.80). We have scored 5.38 runs per game in June! Dallas is 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.04 per game (Portland is 9th with 4.21 per game). Our Bullpen ERA is now 4.70, the worst in Baseball! 6.31 in June! Their run differential is +7 and ours is -29.

Dallas Eagles (37-33 .529 15 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (32-39 .451 15.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

DAL: Tim Willcox (31-R 10-2 1.97) vs. POR: Rondey Moe (26-R 1-2 3.00)

Willcox is their #3 starter, believe it or not. We faced him once last year and he had a no decision with 6 IP and 3 R (1 earned). He is currently 3rd in the PCL in ERA.

Moe finally got his first win as a Beaver in his 6th try last time out. He allowed 3 runs in 6 IP.

How can you not like a fellow hitting .331? A wild pitch sends Hinckley to 2nd. He steals 3rd! Fernando Martinez swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd and Hinckley scores. 1 to 0, Beavers! Glenn Snowden hits a home run to left center!! 2 to 0, Beavers! Fernando Mexicano flies out to right.

Bottom of the Second:

Shannon Kuchta and Jose Rojas lead off with back to back singles. Rick Mansoor lines out to the pitcher and they double Kuchta off at 2nd.... P Bobby Johnson grounds out to 2nd.

Top of the Third:

Reid Reddick and Johnny Kadner lead off with back to back singles. P Hal Kestler lays down a bunt, but 3B Rich Cruz charges and makes the play at 3rd, 5-6! Franklin Teran grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!!

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Bill Wightman grounds a hit to left. Daniel Alonso grounds a double down the right field line and Wightman scores... 2 to 1, Beavers. With 2 outs, Bart Stombaugh beats out an infield hit... P Bobby Johnson picks him off at 1st!

Bottom of the Fifth:

Rick Mansoor lines a double down the right field line. P Bobby Johns tries to bunt, but pops out to the pitcher. And the next two make outs...

Top of the Sixth:
With 2 outs, Daniel Alonso draws a walk and then Rick Adkins hits a home run to left center... 3 to 2, Eagles.

Bottom of the Sixth:
Fernando Martinez beats out an infield hit and Glenn Snowden grounds a hit to left. Fernando Mexicano lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded with no outs. With the infield in, Shannon Kuchta grounds his third hit of the day through the left side and Martinez scores! Tie game: 3 to 3. Juan Rojas grounds into a force at home, 4-2. Rick Mansoor pops out to short. Pinch-hit or not pinch-hit for P Bobby Johnson? Since our Bullpen is so stinky and we do not have a good hitter on the bench anyway, he is allowed to hit. He swings at the first pitch and lines one hard to center, but it is caught...

Top of the Seventh:

I knew! I knew, yet I let him hit anyway! I am a doofus! With 1 out, backup catcher Johnny Kadner doubles to right center. P Hal Kestler strikes out. We walk Franklin Teran intentionally. Why? He is 1 for 14 against us.... Sandy Forte, who was 1 for 17 against us, is now 2 for 18, since he hits a double to right center, scoring both runners.... 5 to 3, Eagles. The Bullpen is up. Bill Wightman grounds one to short and Juan Rojas throws it away for a 2 base error and another run... 6 to 3, Eagles. Daniel Alonso strikes out.

Bottom of the Ninth:
P Hal Kestler still on the mound with 110 pitched to his credit. Rick Mansoor works an 8 pitch walk. PH Don Neumann (32-S) grounds a hit to right. That does it for P Kestler. New Pitcher: John Farrance (40-R), their closer with a 3.31 ERA and 10 BB and 37 SO in 35.1 IP. 3B Rick Woodell (31-L) grounds a double down the right field line and Mansoor scores. 6 to 4, Eagles and the tying run is in scoring position with no outs. Jack Hinckley hits a slow roller in the direction of shortstop and gets thrown out, but Neumann scores and Woodell goes to 3rd. 6 to 5, Eagles. The tying run is 90 feet away with 1 out. The infield is in and Fernando Martinez grounds one through the right side and Woodell scores!!! Tie game: 6 to 6! Glenn Snowden pops out to center... 2 outs. Fernando Mexicano swings at the first pitch and lines it into the right field seats!!!!!!! And THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!!

Bottom of the First:

Fred Rambo takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... P Joe Hoehn's one calling card his good control, but he is now walking 3.1 per 9 innings for the Beavers, over twice his minor league rate... Rambo gets caught stealing! Bud Lisk grounds a hit to right. Jose Naranjo dinks a hit to center and Lisk beats the throw to 3rd. Steve Bone swings at the first pitch and plunks one in front of the plate and we get the force at 2nd, 2-4, and Lisk holds at 3rd. 2 outs. Gus McCollum swings at the first pitch and fouls out to 3rd!

Top of the Second:

Rick Mansoor grounds a double down the right field line! But the next three all make outs...

Top of the Third:
Dave Risinger and Jack Hinckley lead off with back to back hits. With 1 out, we pull off a double steal so they can walk Glenn Snowden... But they decide to pitch to him and he fouls out to 1st... Shannon Kuchta puts a charge into one to left, but it is caught just short of the warning track... Will we ever be able to score runs off this crappy pitcher in this great hitter's park?

Bottom of the Third:
P Oscar Rios bounces one back to the mound, but 1B Glenn Snowden drops the throw... Error #11... Fred Rambo beats out an infield hit. Bud Lisk grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and P Rios goes to 3rd. Jose Naranjo strikes out!! Steve Bone lines a hit to center and P Rios scores. 1 to 0, Stars.

We are back home and will stay here until July 14! The rampaging San Francisco Seals are here to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won a pair of games at home against the Oaks and have a 9 game winning streak going with not one of the games being a 1 run victory. They are 19-5 (.792) in June. We are 0-4 against them on the season. They swept us in 4 games right here, April 25-28. The Seals are leading the PCL in scoring with 4.86 runs per game (Portland is 9th with 3.99). They are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.77 per game (Portland is 6th with 4.06). Their run differential is +85 and ours is -6.

San Francisco Seals (55-23 .705 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (37-42 .468 18.5 GB in 6th place in the PCL West)

SF: Shelly Thompson (36-R 3-2 4.14 1 SV) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 5-5 2.92)

We have never faced Thompson before. He gave up 5 R in 2.2 IP last time out. The Seals have 3 SP in the DL right now.

Johnson allowed 6 runs (5 earned) in 8 IP last time out in a no decision. He has a 4.14 ERA in June so far.

Snowden's hitting streak reaches 15 games. Fernando Mexicano swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to deep right.

Top of the Third:

Bruce Jump doubles down the right field line. He goes to 3rd on a ground out to 1st, unassisted, by George Cowles. P Shelly Thompson flies out to deep center and and Jack Hinckley had to make a long run to get the ball. Jump tags up and trots home. 1 to 0, Seals.

Bottom of the Fifth:
P Bobby Johnson connects with an 0-2 pitch and doubles to right center! Dave Risinger swings at the first pitch and grounds out to the pitcher and P Johnson goes to 3rd. Jack Hinckley, who has two very loud outs so far, squibs one towards short and beats out an infield hit and P Johnson scores! Tie game: 3 to 3.

Top of the Sixth:

Brian Dube leads off with a no doubt home run to left center... 4 to 3, Seals. P Bobby Johnson has not been very tough to hit in the last few games... The Seals' 3-4-5 hitters, all Silver Sluggers or MVP's are 0 for 9... Dube and Jump, definitely NOT Silver Sluggers are 4 for 5 with a double and 2 home runs...

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Garry Ayers (29-R). With 2 outs, George Cowles draws a walk. PH Mike Hopkins (39-R), batting .184 with 2 HR in 39 AB, doubles to left center and Cowles scores... 5 to 3, Seals. Our Bullpen is beyond belief.... Most of these guys had good years last year! What gives?

New Pitcher: Dan Robinson (37-L), a rookie, believe it our not, with 3.2 IP under his belt with 1 run allowed. Dave Risinger grounds a hit to left. Jack Hinckley grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4.
