Burroughs led off the top of the second with a home run of his own. Hand struck out Aparicio to begin the bottom of the second to record his 30th K of the season. Harris looked to tie the game in the third with a single but Harrah was thrown out at home trying to score from second. After three: Boston 2 Texas 1. Howard got the Rangers on the board first with an RBI single in the first. Also in the first, Nelson got his 30th stolen base of the year. Ford then slapped down an RBI single as did Harris and Randle as the Rangers batted around the order in the first. Even Broberg got into the act with an RBI double. In his second at bat of the inning, Harrah knocked in a run with a single. Biittner did as well. In all, 12 batters came to the plate in the first. 7 scored. 9 got hits. There were no errors. May led off the top of the second with a home run. Broberg ended the top half of the second by striking out Orta. It brought Broberg's K total to 60. In the bottom of the second, the Rangers loaded the bases with nobody out. Harris added an RBI single. Denny O'Toole took over pitching duties for the White Sox to begin the bottom of the third. The Rangers loaded the bases with two out but this time could not add to their lead. After three: Texas 8 Chicago 1. In the top of the fourth, Chicago took advantage of the third Rangers error of the game as May brought in the run with a groundball out. In the bottom of the fourth, Harris was caught stealing. It was the 20th time this season, Hermann threw out a would-be base stealer. In the fifth, Howard added an RBI with a sac fly. Billings then added an RBI single to make it where all nine Texas starters had at least one hit in the game. Harris followed up with his fourth hit of the game to drive in his tenth run of the season. After Broberg led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, Chicago brought in Rich Gossage to pitch. Biittner brought home Broberg with a sac fly. After six: Texas 12 Chicago 2. Chicago loaded the bases with two out in the top of the eighth then Hermann drew a walk to bring in a run. Casey Cox then came in and got the final out. Mike Paul came in to pitch the ninth for the Rangers and he closed the book on the Rangers first ever win over the White Sox. Just barely. The series has been close so far this season with California winning 4 and the Rangers taking 3. A Burroughs single in the bottom of the first looked like it would put Texas on the board but Harrah was thrown out at home trying to score from second. Broberg had a no hitter through three. After three: California 0 Texas 0. Kosco got the Angels first hit with one out in the fourth. A walk and an error later and the bases were loaded. Spencer then tagged a grand slam. In the bottom of the fifth, May struck out Broberg to record his 90th K of the season. After six: California 4 Texas 0. Broberg returned the favor in the 7th, striking out May for his 70th K on the season. Burroughs made sure the Rangers avoided the shutout as he hit a solo shot in the eighth. Lloyd Allen immediately came in to replace May. Allen entered the game second in the AL in saves. Allen finished off the last two innings to give the Angels their fifth straight win and the Rangers their fifth straight loss. Final score: California 4 Texas 1. But, so far, the results have favored the Angels. Foster started off by striking out Maddox to record his 40th strikeout of the season. In the top of the second, Torborg got an RBI single as another error came back to haunt the Rangers. Foster followed up with a double but Torborg was thrown out at home trying to score from first. The Angels loaded the bases with two out in the third, thanks to another Texas error. But Howard robbed Cardenas of a base hit to prevent any damage. After three: California 1 Texas 0. The Rangers loaded the bases with two out in the fifth but Howard grounded out to end the inning. After six: California 1 Texas 0. Paul Lindblad pitched the ninth for Texas and got the 1-2-3. With a runner on first and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Don Rose replaced Foster on the mound for California and he got Nelson to hit into the game ending 5-4-3. The Rangers are 5-1 this season against the Indians and will try to continue their dominance in this series again today in Cleveland. In the top of the second, King doubled his RBI output of the season with a 3 run homer. Still in the second, the Rangers loaded the bases with one out but Nelson grounded into the 4-6-3. Fosse led off the bottom of the second with a home run to put Cleveland on the board. McCraw followed up with a double but injured himself sliding into second and had to leave the game. Dunning then singled for his first RBI of the season. In the third, Alex Johnson tied the game with an RBI single. Cleveland went on to load the bases and took the lead on a wild pitch. After three: Cleveland 4 Texas 3. Harrah tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the sixth. Nelson then belted a 3 run homer and the Rangers once again had a 3 run lead. That ended the day for Dunning as he was replaced by Tom Hilgendorf. Casey Cox took the mound for Texas in the bottom of the sixth and got the 1-2-3. After six: Texas 7 Cleveland 4. Dick Baney took the mound for the Indians in the eighth. The Rangers threatened but failed to add to the lead. Mike Paul was brought in to pitch the eighth for Texas. And he ended the inning by recording his 30th K of the season, striking out Unser. The Rangers loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the ninth. And failed to score. Duffy got an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. But it wasn't enough as Texas again beat the Indians. Final score: Texas 7 Cleveland 5. The Rangers will try to continue their dominance of the Indians by finishing off a sweep in Cleveland. But the Rangers have just had their number. Chambliss got the Indians going with a 2 run single in the first. Suarez got a groundout RBI in the second to put Texas on the board. And Cleveland lost Bell to an injury in the same frame. Harris tied the game with an RBI single in the third. After three: Texas 2 Cleveland 2. A run scoring single by Harrah gave Texas the lead in the fourth. The Rangers went on to load the bases with one out and then Howard added a 2 run single for his 30th RBI on the season. Harris came up with another RBI single as the Rangers put four on the board in the fourth. Vince Colbert took the mound for the Indians in the fifth. Again, the Rangers loaded the bases with one out and Nelson crushed a grand slam to bring his RBI total on the season to 30. Nettles had an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. Tom Hilgendorf took the mound for Cleveland in the sixth. After six: Texas 10 Cleveland 3. In the seventh, the Indians had runners at first and second and one out and the Rangers went to the bullpen and brought in Jim Shellenback and he struck out the next two batters to end the inning. Dick Baney took the mound for Cleveland in the eighth. He got two out and then Steve Mingori came in to get the final out. Duffy got an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth and an error gave the Indians another run before the final out of the game was made. Final score: Texas 10 Cleveland 5. If only they could play the Indians all year. The Rangers have to travel to Baltimore to face the Orioles for three games. Baltimore leads the AL East by a half game over Milwaukee. Cubs CF Rick Monday suffered a ruptured disc and will miss the rest of the season. SP George H Stone of Atlanta will miss the rest of the year because of a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. Rumor has it that Atlanta 1B Orlando Cepeda is on the trade block. It is also no surprise that the Orioles have won 5 out of 6 against Texas. Stanhouse had trouble finding the strike zone in the first inning and Baltimore loaded the bases with nobody out. Powell then got an RBI single but the second runner, Belanger, was thrown out at home. Robinson then singled up the middle but Johbson, like Belanger, was thrown out at home trying to score from second. So all the Orioles got out of it was a single run. Burroughs then tied it in the top of the second with a leadoff home run. Nelson gave the Rangers the lead in the top of the third with an RBI double. Burroughs then singled but this time it was Nelson thrown out at home trying to score from second. After three: Texas 2 Baltimore 1. A Nelson throwing brought in the tying run in the bottom of the fourth. Stanhouse then struck out Alexander to reach 60 K on the season. Howard tried to give Texas the lead back in the sixth with a would-be RBI single but, for the second time in the game, Nelson was thrown out at home trying to score from second. After six: Texas 2 Baltimore 2. Paul Lindblad took the mound for Texas in the seventh. Johnson then went yard with two men on to break the tie. This put Johnson over the 20 mark in RBI for the season. Mike Paul immediately replaced Lindblad. Grant Jackson came on in the ninth to close it out for the Orioles and he got the 1-2-3.
