Memorial Day!

Portland Beavers (32-18 .640 6 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (29-22 .569 2 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East)

POR: Bobby Johnson (26-R 7-3 2.67) vs DEN: Jose Rosa (24-R 1-1 2.81)

Johnson gave up 4 runs in 6 IP in a loss last time out.

Rosa is their #1 starter. He has only had 4 starts this season because of a torn flexor tendon suffered last September. He only gave up 2 runs total in his first 3 starts, but gave up 6 in 5 IP last time out in a no decision. He had 2 no decisions against us last year, but only gave us 2 runs in each game, once in 9 innings and once in 7.

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: Mile High Stadium
Weather: 69 F, Clear Skies, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from center
Attendance: 15,728

Top of the First:
Dale Thomas swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short. George Brock doubles to left center. Enrique Ramos swings at the first pitch and flies out to center. Glenn Snowden grounds a hit to center and Brock scores without a throw! 1 to 0, Beavers! Tim Higbee lines a hit to right and Snowden beats the throw to 3rd. Jeff Galka flies out to center.

Bottom of the First:
Colin Woodford takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Juan Arevalo pops one foul down the right field line, but Enrique Ramos drops it for an error... Given a second chance, Arevalo grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. Kevin McKinney grounds one to short, but Dave Maynard makes a bad throw to 2nd.... 2 errors already in this game for us... Eric Daniels flies out to center. Joe Taylor swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short, Maynard making the play this time!

Top of the Sixth:

Enrique Ramos and Glenn Snowden lead off with back to back walks. We now have 3 walks in the game. P Juan Rojas only walked 2 total in his first 4 starts. Tim Higbee grounds into a 6-4-3 double play and Ramos goes to 3rd... They walk Jeff Galka intentionally. Dave Maynard grounds out to 3rd...

Top of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Willie Romero (20-L), a rookie who has yet to allow a run in his career in 10.1 IP. He was named the #9 prospect by Baseball America this Spring. The Bear team is loaded to the brim with young talent. Glenn Snowden hits a home run to left! 2 to 0, Beavers! His first HR in almost 3 weeks (19 days). Tim Higbee swings at a 3-0 pitch and grounds a hit up the middle. Jeff Galka tries to check his swing on a 3-2 pitch, but the ump says he went around... Dave Maynard lines out to short. PH Vern Hagner (23-R), who will stay in the game to play center, grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Eighth:
Colin Woodford draws a walk... The Bullpen is ready. Juan Arevalo swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to slowly to 2nd, and Woodford moves up. Kevin McKinney grounds one to short, but Dave Maynard boots it.... His 2nd error today, but only his 3rd on the season. Both errors came off the bat of McKinney, which stinks because you do not get a lot of opportunities to get him out... Eric Daniels pops out to center and Woodford stays put! Joe Taylor swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to left... 3 to 2, Bears.

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Tom Santacroce (23-R), their closer who got the Save yesterday by striking out 5 of 6 batters.... PH Steve Hermanson (27-S) strikes out... P Santacroce is hurt. New Pitcher: Javier Juarez (30-L), with a 3.05 ERA in 44.1 IP with 5 starts. Dale Thomas lines out to center... PH A.J. Lee (25-R) lines out to center....

Lost - 3 to 2

This one hurts....
2 games and 2 runs in each at Mile High....

We had 7 hits and made 3 errors
Denver had 4 hits and made 1 error

Bobby Johnson (L 7-4) went 8 innings (CG), allowed 3 unearned runs, 4 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks and struck out 4. 131 pitches.

Juan Rosa went 7 innings, gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 4 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3.
LHP Willie Romero (W 1-0) went 1 inning, gave us 1 run, 2 hits, 1 home run, and struck out 1.
LHP Javier Juarez (SV 1) faced 2 batters and got 2 outs.

2B George Brock had 3 hits with a double and scored a run. 1B Glenn Snowden had 2 hits with his 11th home run of the season, drew a walk and had 2 RBI. C Tim Higbee had 2 hits.

For Denver, C Joe Taylor hit a 3 run home run, his 6th of the season.

The Bears announced that P Tom Santacroce, who has struck out 6 of 7 Beavers he has faced so far this year, had a mild calf strain and should be fine for striking out more Beavers after a good night's sleep.

Salt Lake City traded 2-time All-Star(01,04) LF Steve Rizkallah (34-R) to New York for 2 minor leaguers: SS Chris Lackey (22-L) and CF Rusty O'Quinn (24-R).

Rizkallah is signed through next season at $2.2 million per year.

Neither prospect was ranked, but Lackey has some talent.

We sent A.J. Lee (25-R), who is batting .203 this season and striking out a ton (20 in 69 AB), to Vancouver (A) and called up 3B Bob Elsner (24-L). Elsner was batting .268 with a .742 OPS for the Mounties, but hit .320 with a .924 OPS in May. He was a 2nd round pick in the 2003 B Leagues Draft. We got him in a trade with San Antonio in November of 2003. He was the #75 prospect this Spring, according to Baseball America.

Portland Beavers (32-19 .627 5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (30-22 .577 2 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East)

POR: Rich Larkin (25-R 6-2 2.06 4 SV) vs DEN: Monte Woodie (24-L 3-8 4.83)

Larkin has won his last 2 starts, only allowing w run in each. He went 7.1 innings last time out and had a CG 4 hitter the time before. But neither of those games were in Denver...

Woodie won his last start, allowing 2 runs in 7.2 IP to the Seals with no walks and 5 SO. He was 13-6 with a 2.90 ERA in 26 career starts before this season. We faced him once, back in 2003 when he was a rookie and scored only 2 runs in 8 innings, but he had a no decision.

Last year, Galka did not hit all that great, but played pretty good defense. This year, he is hitting much better, but playing horrible defense... He now has 9 errors on the season and only made 12 all of last year... P Rich Larkin balks Daniels to 3rd. We are having a lot of balks of late... Joe Taylor strikes out!

Trudy the Trainer informed me that Kim Springer (24-L) is not healing up as fast as she expected and she said she was not sure when he would be ready to play.

Portland Beavers (33-19 .635 6 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (30-23 .566 2 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East)

POR: Vinny Martinez (35-L 0-0 0.00) vs DEN: Norm Ginsburg (27-R 0-2 5.70)

Due to the rainout and subsequent doubleheader, we are starting Martinez in this game to avoid having to pitch someone on short rest in Mile High Stadium.

Ginsburg has only had 4 starts due to shoulder tendinitis he suffered at the end of April. This will be his first start back from the injury.. In a rehab start in Albuquerque (A), he gave up 5 runs and 10 hits in 4.2 IP. He was 0-2 against us last year, but one of the games was a pretty good one and the other was not all that bad.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS DEF)

9: P Norm Ginsburg (27-R .000-8-0-0-.000 29)

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: Mile High Stadium
Weather: 61 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from center
Attendance: 14,255

Top of the First:
Dale Thomas grounds a hit to left. He gets caught stealing... George Brock skies one to right, but Bob Ellis drops the ball for an error! Brock gets caught stealing... Enrique Ramos grounds out to the pitcher...

Bottom of the First:

Eric Daniels grounds out to 2nd. Bob Ellis strikes out looking! Tom Boyles, in his first AB since April 13, swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to 2nd! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Second:

With 1 out, Rick Hansen reaches on a 2 base error when LF Dale Thomas misplays his fly ball. Carroll Morse, the sub .200 hitter, lines a hit to center and Hansen scores... Of course. Sub-.200 hitters do not hit sub-.200 against us! 1 to 0, Bears.

Bottom of the Third:
P Norm Ginsburg swings at the first pitch and grounds his first hit of the year up the middle... Eric Daniels grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4. Bob Ellis lines a hit to center. Daniels steals 3rd. Ellis then steals 2nd. With the infield in, Tom Boyles grounds out to short and the runners hold! Duan Bailey pops out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Fifth:
Eric Daniels doubles to left center. He tries to steal 3rd, but C Tim Higbee throws him out! Bob Ellis swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to left. The next two make outs!

Top of the Seventh:
Enrique Ramos and Glenn Snowden lead off with back to back hits and we have runners at the corners with no outs. P Norm Ginsburg picks Snowden off at 1st... With the infield in, Tim Higbee grounds a hit up the middle and Ramos scores! Tie Game: 1 to 1. The next two fly out to left...

Bottom of the Seventh:
Mike Holguin leads off with a double to left... The Pen is up. P Norm Ginsburg bunts the runner to 3rd. With the infield in, Eric Daniels grounds a hit through the right side and Holguin scores... 2 to 1, Bears. Martinez has pitched a great game in Mile High Stadium, a tortuous place against left-handers, but he is gonna take a loss because of our suddenly inept offense.... Call to the Bullpen: Leonardo Sanchez (25-R). Bob Elsner makes his Major League debut at 3rd in a double switch. Bob Ellis grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!

Top of the Eighth:

With 1 out, Bob Elsner, in his first Major League AB, swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run down the left field line! Tie Game: 2 to 2. With 2 outs, George Brock loops a hit to left center. He gets caught stealing again....

Bottom of the Eighth:
Tom Boyles lines a hit to right and then steals 2nd. Duane Bailey hits a home run to left... 4 to 2, Bears. The next three all strike out, but that is a little to late, Sanchez....

Top of the Ninth:

P Norm Ginsburg is at 108 pitches. 3-4-5 up for us. Enrique Ramos swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to right. That does it for P Ginsburg. New Pitcher: Guy Young (21-R), the rookie who just started and threw 6 innings on Monday in a win. He apparently is taking over the closer role from Tom Santacroce, even though Santacroce has done nothing but strike us out this series... Glenn Snowden strikes out... Tim Higbee takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three... Well, I guess you can't go wrong with either of them as a closer against us... PH Steve Hermanson (27-S) swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 1st, 3-1....

Lost - 4 to 2

11 runs scored in 4 games at Mile High... Pathetic.

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
Denver had 11 hits and made 1 error

Vinny Martinez went 6.1 innings, allowed 2 runs (1 earned), 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.
RHP Leonardo Sanchez (L 0-2) went 1.2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 2 hits, 1 home run and struck out 3.

Norm Ginsburg (W 1-2) went 8 innings, gave us 2 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Guy Young (SV 2) pitched a perfect 9th and struck out 2. In an oddity, the Bears had 3 different pitchers get Saves in the series.

LF Dale Thomas had 2 hits, but got caught stealing had dropped a fly ball for a run. 2B George Brock had a hit and a walk, but got caught stealing both times. RF Enrique Ramos had 2 hits and scored a run. 1B Glenn Snowden had 2 hits. C Tim Higbee had a hit and a walk and an RBI. 3B Bob Elsner, in his first Major League AB, hit a home run.

After talking it over with Trudy the Trainer and Kim himself, we have decided to activate Kim Springer (24-L) from the Disabled List and let him play through his injury. Who knows? Maybe a little competition will get his juices flowing and heal the rib cage muscles a little quicker. Or maybe he will tear something and miss the rest of the season....

RF Roberto Damas (33-R) was sent back to Vancouver (A).

We have also decided to platoon rookie 3B Bob Elsner (24-L) with Jeff Galka for a while and see how it goes.

We are back home to play the Sacramento Solons a 3 game series over the weekend. They just lost 3 of 4 in San Antonio and were swept 4 games in Dallas before that. We swept them in 4 games here, April 21-24. They are 11th in scoring in the PCL with 3.96 runs per game (Portland is down to a tie for #4 with 4.43). The Solons are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.48 per game (Portland is #3 with 3.51). Their run differential is -28 and ours is +49, now 2nd best to Brooklyn (+52).

Sacramento Solons (24-30 .444 9.5 GB tied for 6th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (33-20 .623 6 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

SAC: Jack Hill (24-L 5-4 3.44) vs POR: David Cruz (24-R 1-0 1.84) Rookie

With Mike McLane (27-R) on the DL again, Hill is their #1 starter. He gave up 2 runs in 4 IP last time in a no decision. A rain delay of over an hour in the 5th inning took him out of the game. We beat him back in April, scoring 7 runs in 6.2 IP with 9 hits and 5 walks.

Cruz gave up 1 run and 4 hits in 8.1 IP at Kansas City last time out to earn a win.

It is his Major League leading 6th shutout of the season, 2nd in a row and the 12th of his career. He is now 6-4 with a 2.36 ERA in 13 starts. The Pirates won, 2 to 0.

We are in sunny San Diego to play the Padres a 2 game set. They won 2 of 3 here over the weekend against Oakland and have won 4 of their last 5. We split a pair of games with them in Portland, April 18-19. They are 15th in scoring in the PCL with 3.39 runs per game (Portland is up to #2 with 4.55). They lead the PCL in fewest runs allowed with 3.21 per game (Portland is #3 with 3.41). Their run differential is +10 and ours is +64, now 6 better than Brooklyn for the Best in Baseball.

Portland Beavers (36-20 .643 7.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (27-30 .474 9.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West)

POR: Rich Larkin (25-R 7-2 1.94 4 SV) vs SD: John Riley (29-R 8-3 2.44) 2-time All-Star(01-02)

Larkin has won his last 3 starts, allowing 1 earned run in each. Last time out, at Denver, he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in 7.1 IP with 6 H, 0 BB and 8 SO.

Riley is their #1 starter. He pitched 5 shutout innings in his last start, but had to leave with a strained back, which is still bothering him. He was 0-1 in 2 starts against us last year, but pitched well in the loss and poorly in the no decision.

Bottom of the Ninth:

Vern Hagner is in to play center and Jerry Suazo moves to left. PH Danny Holmes (29-L), batting .189 in 37 AB, grounds a hit to center... Dick Berube grounds into a 6-4-3 double play! Eric Hansen swings at the first pitch and lines one to the left side where 3B Bob Elsner makes a nice catch and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 3 to 2

We had 13 hits (all singles) and made 1 error
San Diego had 8 hits and made no errors

David Cruz (W 2-0) went 7 innings, allowed 1 run, 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit.

Around the League: Duke McKenzie (27-R) of San Francisco, who we lost to waivers, beat Seattle today and is now 9-2 with a 2.57 ERA. It is amazing the number of good starting pitchers we had, who are now pitching for other teams... Ron Marling (24-R) is 5-0 with a 2.18 ERA for Detroit, Vic Kyzer (26-L) is 6-4 with a 1.90 ERA and leading the PCL in strikeouts and Ricardo Gil (26-R) is 5-1 with a 2.97 ERA for Milwaukee, Frank Flores is 9-3 with a 3.66 ERA for Minnesota and Steve Muir is 7-3 with a 2.81 ERa for St. Louis.

There are a few who are not doing so great right now: Bruce Ancona (25-L) is 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA for Kansas City and John Krawczyk is 2-4 with a 5.67 ERA for Washington.

When you combine that with the fact that 7 (!) teams are using former Beavers as closers right now, we have given away a pretty awesome pitching staff....

We are back home to play the surprising San Antonio Missions a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games in Milwaukee. We were 6-2 against them last year when they finished 67-95 in 8th (last) place in the PCL West. We are 21-11 (.656) since 2001. They are 13th in scoring in the PCL with 3.75 runs per game (Portland is #4 with 4.52). The Missions are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.36 per game, even though they play in the Skydome, a hitter's park (Portland is #2 with 3.34, even though we also play in a hitter's park). Their run differential is +23 and ours is +68, still 7 better than Brooklyn for the Best in Baseball.

San Antonio Missions (36-23 .610 2 GA in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (38-20 .655 8 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

SA: Mitch Bagley (23-R 7-4 2.42) 2-time Gold Glove(03-04) vs POR: Barry Phillips (22-R 8-3 3.48) CY/All-Star/Gold Glove(03)

Bagley is their #1 starter. He has pitched 2 straight shutouts, a 6 hitter and a 5 hitter. In the 6 hitter, he struck out 12 and walked 2. He was 1-1 against us last year with a 5 hit shutout and only gave us 3 runs in 7 IP in the loss.

Phillips gave up 2 runs in 7 IP for a win in his last start. Now would be a good time for him to start looking like a Cy Young Award winner.

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Steve Stewart (25-L). 3-4-5 up for the Missions. Ken Prunner strikes out! Sergio Parra strikes out! Roberto Blanco strikes out on 3 pitches and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers! THAT's the way to do it!

Trudy's report of Barry Phillips is a torn meniscus and he is out for the year....

This is a sad day....

SP Barry Phillips (22-R) was put on the DL and RP Dave Briggs (27-L) was recalled from Vancouver (A). Vinny Martinez (35-L) will get the first shot at filling the open spot in the rotation.

San Antonio Missions (36-24 .600 1 GA in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (39-20 .661 9 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

SA: Mark Livington (24-L 8-3 1.74) vs POR: Bobby Johnson (26-R 8-4 2.19)

Livington is in his 3rd year in the League, but this is his 1st as a starter and it is not going half bad. He leads the PCL in ERA. He has allowed 2 earned runs total in his last 4 starts. He gave up 1 unearned run and 4 hits and 1 walk with 6 SO in 8 IP in a win in his last start. We have never faced him as a starter and he did not have a decision or a save as a reliever against us.

Johnson pitched a 5 hit shutout last time out, ending a personal 3 game losing streak.

RP Jimmy Taylor (32-R), who we released, signed a contract with Sacramento. He will probably go back to being the awesome pitched he was for Atlanta....

We are in Los Angeles to play the Angels a 2 game set. They won 3 of 4 at Minnesota over the weekend. We are 4-1 against them this season and this is our first trip to their place. They are 10th in the PCL in scoring with 3.90 runs per game (Portland is #3 with 4.52). The Angels are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.46 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.29). They lead the PCL with 56 HR allowed. We have allowed the 2nd fewest with 36. The Twins have allowed 31, but are not otherwise pitching very well. The Angels' run differential is -35 and ours is +76, the Best in Baseball.

Portland Beavers (42-20 .677 11 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Los Angeles Angels (28-35 .444 14.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

POR: David Cruz (24-R 2-0 2.02) Rookie vs LA: Bill Wertz (34-R 5-5 3.16) 3-time All-Star(01-03)

Cruz gave up 1 run and 5 hits in 7 IP in a win last time out.

Wertz is their #1 starter. He gave up 2 runs and 5 hits in 8 IP in a win at Minnesota last time out. We beat him back in April scoring 5 runs (3 earned) in 4.1 innings.
