I know it's different situations, but Bryce Harper cleared waivers last year too.

Still think he's a Hall of Famer?
This season will have little to no impact on his HOF candidacy.

Also has a .354 OBP

Players clearing waivers in August means basically nothing. It just means no team thinks they can/will be able to acquire them or that they want their contract.

Mauer hasn't had a good year though, and as this discussion indicated, most people felt he still needed a few more productive years with the bat for that to be realistic.

He ain't getting with his total stats. He needs a LOT more of pure numbers,as his rate stats just aren't high enough.

I wouldn't have Bryce Harper on my team. Yes..he has had one great, and one good year.

Outside of that, his lifetime average is around .260.

If he's a catcher, then a 125 OPS+ is plenty
If he's a first basemen, then it's not enough

The problem is that he isn't either, but rather somewhere in between.

Either way, I think they'll vote him in

3 batting titles
3 gold gloves at catcher
6 time all star
5 silver sluggers
He'll probably end up around 60 rWAR, with catching suppressing that overall total (like it does all catchers).

He gave a 10 year run as one of the best catchers ever. I would prepare yourself to watch him give a Hall of Fame speech one day. Whether he deserves to or not is a matter of debate, but I think he's going in.

He has a career 140 wRC+ and is only 25

Guess who else had at least a 140 wRC+ through their age 25 season (minimum of 3000 PA)

He is one of 19 ever.

Cobb - 174
Mantle - 172
Jackson - 170
Trout - 169
Foxx - 168
Pujols - 166
Speaker - 164
Hornsby - 163
Ott - 153
DiMaggio - 153
Mathews - 153
Vaughan - 150
Aaron - 150
Medwick - 148
Robinson - 145
Griffey - 142
A-Rod - 140
Wright - 140

He has the 6th highest wRC+ among all active players

Trout - 171
Votto - 156
Pujols - 147
Goldie - 144
Stanton - 142
Harper - 140
Donaldson - 140

You don't want him on your roster, but I certainly would. As bad as his year is right now, he is still on pace for a 40 homer season.

He is a career .279 hitter, but he also has a career 14.5% walk rate, which is why he has a .386 OBP. You feel like he is under performing, but that's only because you, along with the rest of the world, has unreal expectations for him. He is 31st in baseball this year in wRC+ tied with Bryant and Belt, ahead of Giancarlo and a ton of other all-stars.

His career year was 2015, right?

Since then (2016 to today) he still has a 131 wRC+, which is tied for 20th best with perennial MVP contender Nolan Arenado.

He's much better than you, and others think he is. Even when he is struggling, he is still so very good.

I'm just saying that this season isn't going to convince anyone who isn't already convinced, nor will it dissuade anyone who already believes.

Let's keep a top-10 catcher of-all-time out of the hall because he got old. Are we gonna keep Pujols out too since he hasn't done anything for 7 years?

You're not seriously comparing Mauer's first ten years with Pujols, are you?

I couldn't bring myself to ready this whole thread, but I did...quite a bit...

in my humble opinion, no catcher deserves to get in until Ted Simmons gets in. Long overdue.

Nobody traded for Sandy Koufax at 35 either, can't believe they put that guy in the Hall.

So..Mauer is either Pujols, or Koufax.

Well. That settles it. 1st ballot HoF'er, for sure.

You are using Mauer's 35-year old season against him. I just brought up a hall-of-famer who didn't even play at 35. If we are judging only on 35-year old seasons...Mauer should obviously be in over Koufax.

You just argued that nobody wanted Mauer at age 35 as an argument for why he isn't a Hall of Famer, then dismiss when people named other 35 year olds nobody wanted.

At this point, you are just blindly spewing your hate, and not trying to be logical.
