Switching to Steam (not a can I preorder question)

I have read all the fine print and understand that pre-ordering on steam simply means putting in wish list.

my question is will the game be exactly the same on both versions

all previous 20 versions I have bought directly.. but 99% of the other games I buy I buy on steam and it really is the way to go for license\update\multiple computers convenience. I am thinking this is the year I make the switch and just want to make sure I am not giving up anything by making the switch

You'd be giving up access to the public beta that starts on the 17th (assuming you were going to pre-order), and I think the devs get a larger share of your purchase price if you purchase direct.

The game itself is exactly the same, though.

In turn, Steam downloads and applies patches automatically, often without you even noticing.

yes which is handy in the steam version. Otherwise you will be prompted that an update is available to download when you open the game which typically doesn't take long.

As Markus mentioned somewhere else, Steam get's a healthy cut, if you order direct it goes to the dev's instead.

Steam takes 30% of the money. Buying direct puts more money in the pockets of the guys who make the game, instead of a company that could give two s*%ts.

Also, if you buy it direct, you can still add it to your Steam Library. Just a heads up on that.

It's this or the other, and I want... the other.

Steam might take 30% but if it was a steam only game it would generate more hits which would generate more sales.

Steam is the biggest game market in the world. Let's use everyone's favorite reference game, football manager, it's steam only.

YouTubers, twitch, streamers they all use steam lists to decide what games to play. And in this day, streamers move product like no one else does.

Ootp will never be on any top steam list because the majority of players probably don't go through steam.

That 30% seems short sighted. As games that want to break through the next barrier need streamers. Only people that will stream ootp are ootp fans and some general sports channels.

Even epic exclusive games weren't being streamed as much as steam games unless it was also on the consoles.

Streaming is huge. Ootp would appeal to lots of other gaming niches. Grand strategy, turn based, simulation, even builder games like cities trains parks etc. Plus plenty of streamers just cover Indy games.

Video game wise I'm not sure how it makes sense not to be on steam.

If it's just the 30% then they should try to cut a deal with epic as they only do 12% but have been known to pay publishers to get exclusive rights.

But to split the base between steam and stand alone I can't see the logic in that in today's game market.

Not for me. If it were a steam only game, bye bye. Steam is greedy and I won't be a part of it. You can't make me. The end.

Markus knows where his base came from and he's not taking it for granted. The day this game is only available on Steam will be a very sad day.

Outside of a couple of AGEOD games that aren't available on Steam (e.g. Gary Grigsby's War in The Pacific), OOTP is the last game I play outside of the Steam's walled garden. I've toyed with the idea of switching the past few years, but missing out on early access is a deal breaker for me.

Are Steam achievements linked to challenge mode in the game?

Wait...what? really? How does this work? If it's in my library I can play on multiple PCs as long as I have the Steam client installed?

I believe it's simply a 'library' thing, so you can start the game from the same place as your Steam library, on the computer you're using.

And with Steam you don't have to deal with whatever fly by night licence companies OOTPD decides to use for this year.

If Valve (the company that owns Steam) goes bankrupt then the PC gaming industry itself is probably gone bust or civilization itself is coming to an end and losing your game license is probably the least of your worries.

Now that you say it; this is the same logic by which I invest in stocks. "If BASF goes belly-up, my 5k bucks are the least of my problems."

I've played OOTP for years but never on steam? Rooke question here but what are the benefits to me if I go steam? Mostly interested in regards to multiple computers? If I used steam on multiple computers, could I play the same save file on both computers? Or would the actual game save files still be saved locally on one computer?
