We are back in Portland for a 3 game home stand against the Padres. They just swept the Stars in 3 games in Hollywood and have won 5 of their last 6. We are 8-3 against them on the season and won 3 of 4 the last time they were here, June 13-16. San Diego is 13th in scoring in the PCL with 3.68 runs per game (Portland is 7th with 4.21). They are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.58 per game (Portland is tied for 5th with 3.97). Their run differential is +15 and ours is +34, yet we both have losing records. Another fun fact: We are in 4th place right now and finished in last place last year, yet we are further from 1st right now than we ended up last year! 25 games out last year, 25.5 out right now.

San Diego Padres (67-77 .465 30 GB in 6th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (71-72 .497 25.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West)

SD: Alan Mitchell (24-R 0-0 0.00) Rookie vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 11-11 3.02)

This will be Mitchell's 2nd Major League start. In his 1st, he pitched 8.2 shutout innings, but got a no decision.

Johnson has been alternating crappy starts with brilliant starts for the last 4 outings. His last start was a CG win, so he is due to get shelled this time if the pattern holds...

Oh, boy.... It is Friday 13th; not that I am superstitious... But we have had an offer on the table for a contract extension for 1B Glenn Snowden (25-R) for a while and he picked today of all days to sign it... Well, what's done is done...

We have signed Snowden to a 10 year contract! I have never signed a player to such a deal in my life, but then again, I have never had a player like Glenn Snowden. He is making $1.23 million this season and is eligible for arbitration this off season and free agency after next year. The New contract, which will be a great deal for the club as long as he maintains his tremendous production, will pay him $1.3 million next year, $1.5 million the year after that and then $1.7 million a season for the 8 years after that. The final two seasons are club options. If he continues to hit .300+ with 35+ HR a year, it will be a steal. He signed it without haggling at all, so I am afraid I could have paid him a lot less... But I was prepared to pay him quite a bit more....

We are in Seattle to play the Rainiers a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 3 of 4 at San Francisco. The Seals had just clinched the Division and were probably not the most motivated they have ever been, but still that is an impressive accomplishment. They held the Seals to 3 or fewer runs in 3 of the 4 games. We are 6-5 against the Rainiers on the season and split a pair of games the last time we were here, June 3-4. Seattle is 15th in scoring in the PCL with 3.71 runs per game (Portland is 7th with 4.21). They are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.14 per game (Portland is 6th with 3.98). Their run differential is -64 and ours is +34.

Portland Beavers (73-73 .500 24 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (60-86 .411 37 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Steve Muir (27-R 12-11 3.22) Gold Glove vs. SEA: Jamie Ladnier (33-L 10-8 3.61)

Muir is 1-4 in his last 7 starts with a 4.71 ERA.

Ladnier is 1-2 against us and had 1 good game and 2 not very goof, though the good on was one of the losses. He is 0-1 in his last 5 starts.

Top of the First:
Jack Hinckley lines out to deep center. Dave Risinger grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Fernando Mexicano swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to right...

Bottom of the First:
Dan McKee takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Adam Carter grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. He steals 2nd. Ronaldo Entrevinhas strikes out! Luis Hernandez lines out hard to right!

Top of the Second:
With 1 out, Jim Shippy hits a home run to left! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Top of the Third:
With 1 out, Jack Hinckley draws a walk and goes to 2nd on a passed ball. Dave Risinger lines a hit to center. Fernando Mexicano does NOT strike out with a runner on 3rd and less than two outs! He grounds into a 4-6-3 double play...

Bottom of the Fourth:

Luis Hernandez leads off with a double to center. You know, he is one of the worst fielders that ever lived. A big reason why we were willing to trade him away. Coming into this game he had 19 errors, the same as our Gold Glover... Hernandez has made his 20th today, though there is still time for Snowden to catch him... Willie Bethune doubles to right and Hernandez scores. Tie game: 1 to 1. With 2 outs, we walk Don Kelly intentionally... He is definitely a worse hitter than P Jim Ladnier... Ladnier pops out to 2nd.

Top of the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Jack Hinckley doubles to right and Dave Risinger singles him home! 2 to 1, Beavers!

Bottom of the Seventh:
Don Kelly leads off with a hit. The Bullpen gets stirring. Kelly steals 2nd. PH Larry Courson (32-L), batting .314 with 13 HR in 258 AB, walks. With 1 out, Adam Carter grounds a hit to center and the bases are loaded. Call to the Bullpen: Jeff Gleason (25-R). Ronaldo Entrevinhas hits a Grand Slam to center... 5 to 2, Rainiers... We are done with Gleason forever....

Lost - 5 to 2

Once again, we hit .500 and cannot get over the hump....

We had 6 hits and made no errors
Seattle had 9 hits and made 1 error

Steve Muir (L 12-12) went 6.1 innings, allowed 4 runs, 8 hits, 3 walks (1 INT) and struck out 4.
RHP Jeff Gleason (BS 2) got 2 outs, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, a home run, 1 walk and struck out 1. He balked.
RHP Rich Larkin pitched a perfect inning and struck out 1.

Jamie Ladnier (W 11-8) went 7 innings, gave us 2 runs, 5 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and stuck out 2.
RHP Danny Cantonwine (SV 1) pitched a perfect 9th and struck out 2 (Mexicano and Snowden).

CF Jack Hinckley had 2 hits with a double and a walk and scored a run. SS Dave Risinger had 2 hits and an RBI. C Jim Shippy hit his 8th home run of the season.

Portland Beavers (73-74 .497 25 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (61-86 .415 37 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 11-11 3.06) vs. SEA: Earl Rogers (27-R 9-17 3.34)

Johnson is 3-2 in his last 6 starts, alternating great games with stinkers. His last outing was a stinker, so we are hoping the pattern continues for just one more game and then the cycle can happily be broken.

Rogers is their #1 starter. We have only faced him once and beat him, scoring 6 runs and getting 10 hits in 3.2 IP. The Rainiers have not scored more than 3 runs in a start of his for 11 games in a row! An average of 1.7 runs per game...

Randy Severn, the .136 hitter, beats out an infield hit. With 1 out, P Earl Rogers bunts him to 2nd. With 2 outs, Dan McKee lines a hit to right and Severn scores... 1 to 0, Rainiers.

Through 4 innings, we have grounded into 3 double plays... The only reason it is not 4 is because Jim Shippy got picked off at 1st before we could do it in one inning...

Top of the Fifth:
With 1 out, Fernando Martinez doubles to left center. Dave Risinger lines a hit to center. Larry Ballard sends one high and deep to left, but it is caught on the warning track and Martinez trots home. Tie game: 1 to 1.

RP Jeff Gleason (25-R) was sent to Vancouver (A). Rookie RP Bill Moon (25-R) was called up. He was signed as a minor league free agent in July after quite a bidding war. He was a 6th round draft pick of the Cardinals in the B Leagues draft this year, but was released on the 1st of April. He sat around unemployed for 3 months, until we had some injuries in the minors and needed a healthy arm. All of a sudden everyone decided they wanted to sign him and we had to end up giving him an $11,000 bonus. He had a 1.44 ERA in 25 IP with the Mounties.

Portland Beavers (73-75 .492 25 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (62-86 .419 36 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Frank Flores (23-R 11-11 3.47) Rookie vs. SEA: Bill Foley (27-R 7-17 3.82) Silver Slugger

Flores is just another of our good young starters who have not been any good at all of late. He is winless in his last 3 starts and allowed 14 runs in his last 17 IP (7.41 ERA).

Foley is 1-0 in 2 starts against us this season and only gave us 2 runs in each game in 8.1 IP. He has only allowed 1 total run in his last 2 starts, both wins.

Top of the Fifth:

With 1 out, Fernando Mexicano jerks one down the right field line for a home run! 3 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Sixth:

PH Nick Sibble (31-L), batting .271 with 1 HR in 70 AB, leads off by grounding a hit up the middle. That is the first hit of the game for Seattle. Now, here comes #2, #3 and #4, I bet.... Juan Garza grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Sibble goes to 2nd. Sibble steals 3rd... Adam Carter flies out to left and Sibble holds... 2 outs. Ronaldo Entrevinhas strikes out!!

Bottom of the Seventh:

Luis Hernandez skies one high and deep to left, but it is caught on the warning track. Carlos Lopez singles. Larry Courson singles to center and Brian Mitchell overruns the ball for an error and runners are at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. The Bullpen is up. Randy Severn grounds out to the pitcher and the runners hold. Don Kelly grounds out to short!

Won - 3 to 0

We had 7 hits and made 1 error
Seattle had 4 hits and made no errors

Frank Flores (W 12-11) went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP. 121 pitches. His 5th shutout, tying him with 3 others for the most in Baseball!

Bill Foley (L 7-18) went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs, 7 hits, 2 home runs, 2 walks and struck out 6. He threw a WP. He leads the PCL in losses all alone now and is tied for the Major League lead.

CF Brian Mitchell hit a double. 3B Rick Woodell hit his 9th home run of the season. RF Fernando Mexicano hit his 35th home run, drew a walk and scored twice. LF Fernando Martinez had a hit and a walk. His 12th walk as a Beaver. He has less than half the walks he had this season for the Brewers and more than twice the at bats.... There is no way I would have traded for him had I known he was going to walk anywhere close to this rate....

The Rainiers announced that Willie Bethune strained his calf and should be fine in a few days.

We are in Sacramento to play the Solons a two game set. They won 2 of 3 here from the Padres over the weekend. We are 8-4 against them this season and split a pair of games the last time we were here, way back in April (29-30). They are 12th in scoring in the PCL with 3.74 runs per game (Portland is up to #6 with 4.17, though our average has gone down). The Solons are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.15 per game (Portland is 6th with 3.95). Their run differential is -60 and ours is +33.

Portland Beavers (74-75 .497 25 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Sacramento Solons (64-85 .430 35 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

POR: Rondey Moe (26-R 5-7 2.89) vs. SAC: Juan Sanchez (27-R 10-16 4.45)

In his last 5 starts, Moe is only 2-2, but he has not allowed an unearned run and his ERA is 2.25 in 36 IP. Only 19 H.

Sanchez is 0-3 against us, but has not had a really bad game. His ERA is 3.68 in the games. He has lost his last 3 starts and been hit very hard in each of his last 5. So I am sure he will shut us down... Fernando Mexicano and Glenn Snowden have liked facing Sanchez: they are a combined 22 for 45 (.489) with 5 HR (4 by Snowden).

Top of the Sixth:
With 2 outs, Glenn Snowden singles to center and goes to 2nd when CF Les Olds overruns the ball. Jim Shippy doubles down the left field line and Snowden scores! Tie game: 1 to 1. They walk Fernando Martinez intentionally, the first time anyone has done that since he has been a Beaver. Dave Risinger grounds out to short...

Bottom of the Seventh:
Harvey Turner leads off with a single and goes to 2nd on a ground out. Tom Nolte grounds one to 2nd and Larry Ballard throws the ball in the dirt for an error. The Bullpen is up. P Juan Sanchez is allowed to bat and, what's more, he swings away! And grounds into a 4-6-3 double play!!

Tie Game: 2 to 2. We walk Terry Bass intentionally.... Tom Nolte, batting .197 at the moment, swings at a 3-2 pitch and hits a home run to right....

Lost - 5 to 2

We are done with David Fuentes forever....

We had 10 hits and made 2 errors
Sacramento had 7 hits and made 2 errors

Rondey Moe went 8 innings, allowed 1 run, 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP. At bat, he had a hit.
LHP Roger Lerer (H 3) faced 1 batter and retired him. The plan was for him to pitch the whole inning...
RHP David Fuentes (L 6-6 BS 4), in his final appearance as a Beaver, did not retire a batter, allowed 4 runs, 3 hits, 1 home run and walked 1 (INT)....

Juan Sanchez (W 11-16) went 9 innings (CG), gave us 2 runs, 10 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 5. 130 pitches.

P Roger Lerer (28-L) was placed on the DL and RP David Fuentes (26-R) was banished to Vancouver (A). RP Jim Kokos (29-R) and P Chuck Purnell (26-L) were recalled.

Portland Beavers (74-76 .493 25.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Sacramento Solons (65-85 .433 34.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

POR: Chuck Purnell (26-L 1-1 3.70 1 SV) Rookie vs. SAC: Steve Gonzalez (32-R 8-8 3.56)

Purnell started one other game on July 20 and got a win and then got sent to A Ball. In 5 IP, he allowed 5 runs (1 earned), 7 hits, walked 3 and only struck out 1. He is getting the start here over Duke McKenzie because of all the lefties in the Solons' lineup. Plus, he was 9-0 in 12 starts with a 2.07 ERA for Vancouver (A).

Gonzalez, the ex-Beaver, is 0-1 in 3 starts against us this season, but only had one poor game and that was a no decision. He has won his last 2 starts, one against San Francisco, and both were good games.

Against the Beavers....

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: RFK Stadium
Weather: 77 F, Clear Skies, with a 9 MPH blowing out to right
Attendance: 11,642

Top of the First:
Brian Mitchell grounds a hit to right. He gets caught stealing again.... Rick Woodell grounds out to short. Fernando Mexicano pops out to right...

Bottom of the First:
Les Olds grounds a hit to center. Dale Cave grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. Jim Holberton takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Lefties seem to not be able to hit P Chuck Purnell all that well, but they don't have to, if they are willing to take some pitches... Harvey Turner grounds a hit to right and Olds beats the throw to the plate... 1 to 0, Solons. Larry Pierce take a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... The Bullpen is stirring... Boyd Wassink lines one back to the mound and P Purnell catches it and doubles Pierce off at 1st!!

Top of the Third:
P Steve Gonzalez walks the bases loaded with 2 outs (Larry Ballard, Brian Mitchell and Rick Woodell). Fernando Mexicano swings at a 3-1 pitch and grounds out to 3rd...

Bottom of the Third:
Les Olds, the .220 hitter, gets his 2nd hit and Dale Cave gets beaned. He is hurt and Terry Bass (29-L), the catcher, is in to run for him. Jim Holberton lines a hit to right and Olds scores... 2 to 0, Solons. The Bullpen is up again. Harvey Turner singles and Bass scores.... 3 to 0, Solons. Larry Pierce takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... The bases are loaded with no outs... How can a guy be so awesome in A Ball and utterly worthless in the Majors? Call to the Bullpen: Duke McKenzie (24-R). Boyd Wassink grounds a hit to right and another run is in... 4 to 0, Solons. Mario Vasquez grounds a hit to center and another run scores... 5 to 0, Solons. That is 7 straight batters to reach base... Larry Carlson grounds one to 3rd and we would finally have an out, except Rick Woodell boots it... 6 to 0, Solons. P Steve Gonzalez grounds into a 4-6-3 double play and another run crosses the plate... 7 to 0, Solons. Les Olds strikes out.

Meanwhile, we have 1 hit through 4 innings....

They say they have an actual salon here at the park that they call a Solon and it is supposed to be something. I'm going to go see if I can find it....

Lost - 8 to 5

Mini-swept...

.500 looks out of the question now...
We have 11 games left and would need to go 7 and 4, which seems possible, until you notice that all 11 games are against the top 3 teams in our division...
And 7 of the games are on the road.

We had 6 hits and made 1 error
Sacramento had 11 hits and made 1 error

Chuck Purnell (L 1-2) went 2+ innings, allowed 6 runs (5 earned), 5 hits, 3 walks, 1 HBO and struck out no one. 65 pitches.

PH Rick Mansoor had his first pinch hit of the season and had 2 RBI.

For Sacramento, LF Harvey Turner had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBI.

The Solons announced that Dale Cave had a bruised knee that would probably bother him for 4 or 5 days, but is nothing serious.

Yesterday, on our off day, Rick Woodell, came to see me. Earlier in the season, he refused to go to Vancouver (A), if you recall. And then he was complaining that he wasn't in the starting lineup. Well, he did not go to Vancouver (A) and we did not cut him and he we even put him in the starting lineup against right-handed pitchers. But now he is complaining that he should not be batting 2nd, but should be batting 3rd or 4th.... I asked him if he really thought that he was a better run producer than Fernando Mexicano and Glenn Snowden. He said that if he was batting in their spots, he'd put up just as good of numbers as they have. I laughed in his face. I didn't mean to be mean; it was just an involuntary reaction... He demanded that I trade him immediately. I pointed out to him that the trade deadline had passed and that no trading was allowed until after the World Series. He said that we weren't going to the World Series, so we should be able to trade right now. I told him to take it up with the Commissioner.... And I think he might... Meanwhile, I will put him back on the bench and see how he likes that...

Also, P Chuck Purnell (26-L) was sent back to Vancouver (A) to help them with their pennant drive. He's not going to help us any. RP Ken Powell (31-R) was recalled.

We are back home in beautiful Portland to play our final home series of the year, a 4 game set against the Oakland Oaks. They just beat the Stars 2 games at home. We are 6-4 against them on the season, but they swept us in 3 games the last time they were here, May 31 - June 2. They are 6th in the PCL in scoring with 4.20 runs per game (Portland is 7th with 4.17).. They have scored 10 more runs than we have in 1 more game. The Oaks are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.47 per game (Portland is 6th with 3.99). Their run deferential is -40 and ours is +27.

Oakland Oaks (78-74 .513 22.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (74-77 .490 26 GB in 4th place in the PCL West)

OAK: Greg Ware (26-L 18-7 2.74) All-Star vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 11-11 3.03)

Ware is 1-0 against us in 2 starts. 16 IP and 18 SO. He was their closer last year, but has adapted well to starting. He lost his last start, but only gave up 1 run and 3 hits in 7 IP. The Oaks were shut out.

Johnson went 8.1 innings last time out and only allowed 2 runs, but got a no decision. According his pattern of starts, he is due to get pummeled...

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
OAKLAND
1: RF Gerry Elliott (29-L .266-546-5-43-.726) Sprained knee 89 BB/28 SB

9: P Greg Ware (26-L .234-77-0-4-.578) All-Star

On the other hand, SS Jim Byrum and 2B Alexis Montoy are 6 for 17 (.353) with 2 HR

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Multnomah County Stadium
Weather: 69 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH blowing in from right
Attendance: 9,849

Top of the First:

Gerry Elliott grounds out to 3rd. John Trent flies out to deep left. Javy Puente grounds out to 2nd! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Jack Hinckley walks on 4 pitches! Juan Rojas takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4! P Greg Ware does not habitually have control issues; his BB/9 is only 2.2. Fernando Mexicano doubles over the center fielder's head and Hinckley scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs, so Glenn Snowden is compelled to strike out... And he does... Jim Shippy should also be a strikeout victim according to the Beaver Code of Etiquette, but he grounds out to 2nd and Rojas scores and Mexicano goes to 3rd. 2 to 0, Beavers! Dave Risinger grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Second:
Jose Julio takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Fernando Martinez grounds a hit to right and Julio heads to 3rd, but Gerry Elliott throws him out... P Bobby Johnson lays down a bunt along the 3rd base line and Jack Reynolds fields it and throws the ball away for a 2 base error! Runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Jack Hinckley does not follow the Beaver Code of Etiquette, but declares that he will be even more polite and lines out to short and they double Martinez off at 3rd.... Only one batter made an out in the inning...

Top of the Third:

Alexis Montoy leads off with a double grounded down the left field line... P Greg Ware bunts and P Bobby Johnson tries to get the out at 3rd, but the throw is late and everyone is safe... Gerry Elliott grounds into a 6-4-3 double play and Montoy scores. 2 to 1, Beavers.

Bottom of the Third:

With 1 out, Fernando Mexicano doubles to right center. Glenn Snowden beats out an infield hit. Jim Shippy swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles down the right field line! Mexicano scores! 3 to 1, Beavers! And once again, Dave Risinger finds himself up with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs... He is the ultimate follower of the Beaver Code of Etiquette.... Surprise! He swings the bat! Surprise! He hit the ball! Surprise! With the infield in, his ground ball scoots through to left center for a hit and both runners score!! 5 to 1, Beavers! That sends 18 game winner, P Greg Ware, to the showers! New pitcher: Jim Coyne (31-R) with a 4.13 ERA in 65.1 IP. PH Brian Mitchell (21-L) flies out to left. Fernando Martinez pops out to the catcher...

Bottom of the Fifth:

Fernando Mexicano doubles down the left field line! His 3rd double of the game! Glenn Snowden grounds a 3-2 pitch to left for a hit. Jim Shippy lines out to short and they double Mexicano off at 3rd... That is twice that has happened today... Dave Risinger grounds a hit to center. A wild pitch moves the runners up. Brian Mitchell grounds out to 2nd...

Top of the Seventh:

With 1 out, Jim Byrum lines a hit to left. Jack Reynolds grounds a hit to center and Byrum goes to 3rd. The Bullpen gets going. Alexis Montoy lines a hit to center and Byrum scores... 5 to 2, Beavers. PH Kenny Giachino (25-L), a rookie batting .278 with 2 HR in 36 AB, strikes out looking! Only the second K of the day for P Bobby Johnson. Gerry Elliott doubles down the left field line and both runners score... 5 to 4, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: Roy Huls (21-R). John Trent flies out to deep left!

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Tadayoshi Date (23-R), a rookie with a 4.55 ERA in 31.2 IP. Glenn Snowden is up and I am thinking a home run would be nice to give us a 2 run cushion with Javy Puente and Tim Metts coming up for the Oaks next inning, but Snowden strikes out... But Jim Shippy hits a home run to left!! 6 to 4, Beavers!

Top of the Eighth:

Javy Puente doubles down th left field line. Tim Metts strikes out looking! Al Burrell grounds out to third! Jim Byrum grounds out to short!

Bottom of the Eighth:

PH Don Neumann (32-S) skies one to left and Javy Puente just plain drops the ball for and error! Jack Hinckley takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. With 1 out, Fernando Mexicano grounds a hit to right and Neumann scores! 7 to 4, Beavers! Glenn Snowden grounds a hit to left and the bases are loaded with 1 out for Jim Shippy. Wish he would have saved that home run for now... He walks to force in a run! 8 to 4, Beavers! Dave Risinger walks on 4 pitches to force in another! 9 to 4, Beavers! They stick with the rookie pitcher... Brian Mitchell strikes out... 2 down. Fernando Martinez takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4, believe it or not, and forces in another run! 10 to 4, Beavers! Now they make a pitching change. New Pitcher: Jerry Loring (28-R) with a 5.77 ERA in 73.1 IP. 1.11 ERA last year in 57 IP. 0 HR allowed last season, but 10 this year. Don Neumann up again and he swings at a 1-2 pitch and clears the bases with a double to left center!! 13 to 4, Beavers!!!! Jack Hinckley strikes out.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Multnomah County Stadium
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 12,559

Top of the First:
Gerry Elliott grounds out to 2nd. John Trent flies out to center. Javy Puente walks on 4 pitches. He gets thrown out trying to steal!

Bottom of the First:
Brian Mitchell walks on 4 pitches, the 119th walk issued by rookie P Hugo Lopez in 195.1 IP. Dave Risinger strikes out. And there is not even a runner on 3rd! Mitchell steals 2nd. Fernando Mexicano pokes a little hit to right. Now there IS a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs and Glenn Snowden strikes out... Fernando Martinez swings at the first pitch and jerks a home run down the right field line! Just over the fence! 3 to 0, Beavers! Jim Shippy flies out to right. He has not been dropped to the #6 hole from the #5 hole because of lack of production, but just so that our entire lineup can be alternating handedness.

Bottom of the Second:
Larry Ballard leads off with a double over the center fielder's head. He steals 3rd. Why we would want a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs, I don't know, since we mostly strike out in that situation.... Jack Hinckley swings at a 3-2 pitch and does not strike out, but lines out to the pitcher.... And, for once, our runner is not doubled off base! With the infield in, P Steve Muir does not strike out, but swings at the first pitch and makes a bid for a hit with a hot grounder to the left side, but 3B Jack Reynolds makes a diving stop and throws Muir out at 1st. Ballard holds at 3rd. 2 outs. Brian Mitchell grounds out to 3rd...

Top of the Third:

With 1 out, the Oaks get their first hit of the game when Mario Rodriguez, that noted slugger, hits a home run to left... 3 to 1, Beavers.

Top of the Sixth:
John Trent walks to lead off the inning. Javy Puente doubles to left center. The Bullpen is up. Tim Metts takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with no outs... Al Burrell doubles over the center fielder's head an 2 runs score... Tie game: 3 to 3. Call to the Bullpen: Garry Ayers (29-R). With the infield hit, Jim Byrum grounds a hit through the left side and a run scores... 4 to 3, Oaks. Is it just me, or do we seem to have more improbable streaks of base runners getting on base than is possible? That's 5 in a row... Jack Reynolds flies out to deep center and Burrell tags up and trots home. 5 to 3, Oaks. A passed ball moves Byrum into scoring position... Mario Rodriguez swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles down the right field line and Byrum scores... 6 to 3, Oaks. P Hugo Lopez grounds out to 3rd. 2 outs. Gerry Elliott lines a hit to center and Rodriguez scores... 7 to 3, Oaks. John Trent walks... Call to the Bullpen: Bill Moon (25-R). Javy Puente grounds a hit to right and somebody scores... 8 to 3, Oaks. Tim Metts swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to center. 7 run inning....

Meanwhile, after scoring 3 runs of P Hugo Lopez in the 1st inning and thinking we were on our way to a second straight double digit day, we have done nothing on offense.... Larry Ballard led of the 2nd with a double. Since then, our batters are 1 for 16 with no walks.

Top of the Seventh:
Rookie P Bill Moon walks Al Burrell and Jim Byrum to lead off the inning and get our Bullpen stirring again. Jack Reynolds grounds into a 6-4-3 double play and Burrell goes to 3rd. Mario Rodriguez pops out to left.

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 2 outs, Jack Hinckley grounds a hit to center and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. PH Don Neumann (32-S) lines a hit to right and Hinckley scores. 8 to 4, Oaks.

Lost - 8 to 4

We had 7 hits and made 1 error
Oakland had 8 hits (6 in the 6th inning) and made 1 error

Steve Muir (L 12-13) went 5+ innings, allowed 5 runs, 4 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks and struck out 4.
RHP Garry Ayers got 2 outs, allowed 3 runs, 3 hits and 1 walk.
RHP Bill Moon went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and 2 walks.
RHP Jim Kokos pitched 2 perfect innings and struck out 2.

Hugo Lopez (W 8-16) went 7 innings, gave us 4 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 7. He threw a WP.

His first home run in 4 weeks. 2B Larry Ballard hit a double. RF Jack Hinckley had a hit and a walk and scored a run. PH Don Neumann had a hit and an RBI.

Ballpark: Multnomah County Stadium
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 10,634

Top of the First:
Gerry Elliott grounds out to the pitcher. John Trent flies out to deep center. Javy Puente takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Tim Metts pops out to 3rd!

Bottom of the First:
Brian Mitchell lines a hit to left. Dave Risinger takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three... Mitchell steals 2nd. This battery is not very good at stopping the running game. Fernando Mexicano pops out to short... Glenn Snowden swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short...

Bottom of the Second:
Fernando Martinez plunks one in front of the plate, but beats it out for an infield hit. With 1 out, Larry Ballard grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6. He steals 2nd. Jack Hinckley draws a walk. Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Roy Huls (21-R). Tim Metts leads off with a double to center. Al Burrell lines a hit to right... Are we going to have another 10 batters reach base in a row inning? Well, if we do, it will not be P Huls giving them up... He has called Trudy the Trainer out to the mound... New Pitcher: Rich Larkin (23-R). Jim Byrum grounds out to 2nd and Metts scores and Burrell goes to 2nd. 5 to 3, Beavers. Russ Inguaggiato takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Portland Beavers (78-78 .500 24 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
San Francisco Seals (102-54 .654 in 1st place in the PCL West)

POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 12-11 3.10) vs. SF: Mike Evans (26-R 10-4 3.46)

Johnson has alternated good starts with bad ones for 8 games in a row. He is due for a good one this time. Even though he won his last start, it was not good. He allowed 4 runs and 8 hits in 6.2 IP.

Evans beat us the one time he faced us, giving us 4 runs (3 earned) in 8.1 IP. He is pitching with some mild shoulder inflammation. Why you are pitching someone you are counting on for the postseason when they are injured in a game that does not mean anything is beyond my understanding.

Around the League: The only division still up for grabs is the NL West. Atlanta and Detroit are tied with 3 games to play. Atlanta's final series is at Pittsburgh, the worst team in Baseball. Detroit will play at home versus Chicago, roughly a .500 team. The Tigers had a good lead, but have lost 6 in a row to let the Crackers catch them.

Down on the Farm:
The Vancouver Mounties (A) won at Tacoma, 10 to 4, to clinch the West Division of the American Association.

We are in Hollywood to play the Stars the final 3 games of the season. They just lost 3 of 4 here to Seattle. We are 4-7 against them on the season and split 2 games with them the last time we were here, August 5-6. We need to win 2 of 3 to finish the season at .500. The Stars are 3rd in the PCL in scoring with 4.52 runs per game (Portland is 6th with 4.30). They have only hit 95 HR, but lead the League now with a .280 BA and .341 OBP. They are tied for 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.48 per game (Portland is 6th with 4.01). Their run differential is +6 and ours is +46.
