This Weeks Major Transactions

The St Louis Cardinals have traded C Tim McCarver, RF Byron Browne, CF Curt Flood and CL Joe Hoerner to the Philadelphia Phillies for 1B Dick Allen, SP Jerry Johnson and 2B Cookie Rojas. The 27 year old McCarver hit .311 with 9 HRs and 62 RBIs in 144 games for the Cardinals. The 2-time World Series winner debuted in the MLB in September 1959 as a 17 year old. The 26 year old Browne hit .266 with 5 HRs and 14 RBIs in 74 games for the Cardinals. The 31 year old Flood hit .295 with 6 HRs and 68 RBIs in 157 games for the Cardinals. It is rumoured that Flood is not happy with the trade. Flood's anger may be as a result of his unhappiness with Cardinals owners Anheuser-Busch when he felt he was slighted on a pay raise at the end of the 1968 season and Busch's comments he felt were directed a him during the 1969 spring training boycott. The 32 year old Hoerner was 10-11 with 13 saves, a 2.63 ERA in a NL leading 68 appearances for the Cardinals. The 27 year old Dick Allen hit .263 with 28 HRs and 75 RBIs in 155 games for the Phillies. The 1964 NL Rookie of the Year's career did not get off to a great start when he faced racial harassment while in the minors in Little Rock. Residents staged protest parades against Allen, the teams first black player. The 25 year old Johnson was 4-14 with a 4.14 ERA in 31 games including 23 starts for the Phillies. The 30 year old Rojas hit .241 with 4 HRs and 17 RBIs in 108 games for the Phillies. Rojas selected baseball over his fathers choice as a doctor. The Phillies used him in all 9 positions in 1964 including pitcher and catcher. In summary, with Curt Floods later legal battle over this trade, the trade itself may have led to what in baseball is now known as "Free Agency".

The New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers will face each other in the 1969 World Series Championship. For the Yankees, the last time they made to post season was in 1964 and their last World Series win was in 1962. What makes it interesting is the Yankees won 101 games and won over 100 games in both 1961 (109) and 1963 (104) yet the won it all during 1962 when they won 96 games in between.

The 29 year old Chavarria did not play in the MLB in 1969 for the A's, he last played in 1967 when he played 38 games for the Athletics. The 28 year old Downing was 10-7 with a 3.04 ERA in 26 games for the Yankees including 19 starts. Downing in real life was known for giving up Hank Aaron's 715th HR in 1974. The 26 year old Fernandez hit .196 with 17 HRs and 38 RBIs in 101 games for the Yankees. Fernandez became expendable with the emergence of Thurmon Munson.

The Seattle Pilots have traded RP Diego Segui and 1B Ray Oyler to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for 2B Ted Kubiak and SP George Lauzerique. The 32 year old Segui was 7-7 with 7 saves, a 4.54 ERA in 58 games including 8 starts for the Pilots. Segui will go onto be a Seattle Mariner and having pitched with each Seattle team in their first ever games. The 31 year old Oyler hit .175 with 5 HRs and 17 RBIs in 128 games with the Pilots. The 27 year old Kubiak hit .191 with 2 HRs and 21 RBIs in 90 games for the Athletics. The 22 year old Lauzerique was 2-1 with a 2.68 ERA in 8 games including 5 starts for the Athletics.

The Minnesota Twins have traded SP Dean Chance, RP Bob Miller, 3B Graig Nettles and CF Ted Uhlaender to the Cleveland Indians for SP Luis Tiant and RP Stan Williams. The 28 year old Chance was 10-7 with 3 saves, a 3.20 ERA in 41 games including 15 starts. Chance's unusual wind up when he would turn his back fully to the catcher sometimes made him a little wild. Chance at the time was the youngest player to win the Cy Young Award in 1964. The 30 year old Miller was 4-10 with 2 saves, a 5.44 ERA in 37 games including 11 starts for the Twins. Miller was 2-time World Champ with the Dodgers in 1963 and 1965. The 25 year old Nettles hit .237 with 11 HRs and 35 RBIs in 137 games for the Twins. Nettles in real life has a break out season in 1970 making this a lopsided trade. The 30 year old Uhlaender hit .283 with 18 HRs and 60 RBIs in 137 games for the Twins. The 29 year old Tiant was 17-18 with a 3.38 ERA in 39 games including 37 starts for the Indians. At age 21, Tiant's contract was purchased by the Indians from his Cuban team the Havana Sugar Kings. Because of tensions between Cuba and the US, Tiant did not see his parents for 14 years as he was unable to get back to Cuba. Tiant changed his pitching wind up as a result of a shoulder blade injury, where he would face 2nd base for most of his wind up. 1969 was an injury plagued season for Tiant and resulted in this trade. The 33 year old Williams was 4-10 with 15 saves, a 4.42 ERA in 48 games including 16 starts for the Indians. Williams won a World Series ring in 1959 with the Dodgers.

The San Francisco Giants have traded SP Ray Sadecki and LF Dave Marshall to the New York Mets for CF Jim Gosger and 2B Bob Heise. The 29 year old Sadecki was 8-10 with 1 save, a 3.70 ERA in 34 games including 17 starts for the Giants. Sadecki and Bob Gibson won a World Series with the Cardinals in 1964. Sadecki was not popular in San Francisco as the Giants trade Orlando Cepeda to get him. The 26 year old Marshall hit .244 with 5 HRs and 25 RBIs in 95 games for the Giants. The 27 year old Gosger hit .261 with 0 HRs and 7 RBIs in 57 games for the Mets (16) and Pilots (41) last year. The 22 year old Heise hit .286 with 0 HRs and 0 RBIs in 14 at bats for the Mets.

The San Francisco Giants have traded SP Bobby Bolin to the Seattle Pilots in exchange for RF Dick Simpson and LF Steve Whitaker. The 30 year old Bolin was 14-6 with a 3.77 ERA in 33 games including 22 starts for the Giants. Bolin finished 2nd in the NL with a 1.99 ERA behind Bob Gibson and his 1.12 ERA. The 26 year old Simpson hit .228 with 3 HRs and 6 RBIs in 23 games with the Yankees (6) and Pilots (17). The 26 year old Whitaker hit .240 with 4 HRs and 9 RBIs in 30 games for the Pilots.

The Chicago White Sox have traded SP Gary Peters and C Don Pavletich to the Boston Red Sox for Billy Farmer and 3B Syd O'Brien. The 32 year old Peters was 13-16 with 1 save, a 4.27 ERA in 37 games including 32 starts for the White Sox. Peters was a 2-time AL ERA leader (1963, 1966) and was the 1963 AL Rookie of the Year going 19-8. Peters is often used as a pinch hitter and hit a PH HR in 1968. Peters also has a Grand Slam to his name. The 31 year old Pavletich hit .229 with 4 HRs and 22 RBIs in 67 games for the White Sox. The 25 year old O'Brien hit .223 with 10 HRs and 33 RBIs in 107 games for the Red Sox.

The Washington Senators have signed C John Roseboro as a free agent. The 36 year old hit .231 with 5 HRs and 42 RBIs in 112 games for the Twins. Roseboro is a 3-time World Series champ, 1959, 1963 and 1965. Roseboro was going to be Ray Campanella's under study, but after a serious car accident paralyzed Campanella, Roseboro was forced into action full time in 1958. In 1965 Roseboro was involved in an altercation with Giants Juan Marichal. Marichal was not happy with Maury Wills after a bunt single and threw at Wills the next at bat. Dodgers SP Sandy Koufax threw one over Willie Mays head a little later. Later in the game with Marichal at the plate and Koufax on the mound, Roseboro buzzed a return throw to the pitcher by Marichal's ear, the fight was on. Marichal struck Roseboro a couple of times with his bat that opened up a gash that required 14 stitches. Marichal was ejected and Roseboro sued Marichal winning a $7500 out of court settlement. Roseboro later said the Koufax would never intentionally throw at hitters due to the risk of injury of his velocity.

Major League Baseball returns to Wisconsin as the Seattle Pilots have relocated to Milwaukee and have become the "Brewers". The Milwaukee Braves left town to become the Atlanta Braves, so Milwaukee will once again have the MLB. Although the Pilots have not been granted full bankruptcy, season tickets have to be placed on hold.

St Louis Cardinals OF Curt Flood has filed a civil lawsuit against the MLB challenging the reserve clauses. Flood has refused to report to the Philadelphia Phillies after an October 1969 with the Cardinals.

The Sporting News has named Willie Mays as the Player of the Decade for the 1960's.

The Baseball Hall of Fame is proud to announce its two newest members. LF Stan Musial and CF Duke Snider.

* The 49 year old Musial started his MLB career in 1941 with the St Louis Cardinals, where he remained his whole career that spanned to 1963. Musial played in 3026 games over a 22 year career. Musial had 3630 hits, 475 HRs and 1951 RBIs with a career batting average of .331. Musial was a 20-time All Star and won the MVP award 3 times. (1943, 1946, and 1948). He led the NL in doubles 8 times, triples 5 times and RBIs twice. He also won the batting title 7 times. Musial is also a 3-time World Series winner. Musial may have won more awards but he missed the 1945 season while he served in the Navy. Musial was born in Donora, Pennsylvania, as was a future ball player Ken Griffey Jr. making Junior the 2nd best left handed hitter from Danora.

* The Silver Fox, Duke Snider started his career with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 at the age of 20 where he remainded with the franchise through its move to Los Angeles into 1962. He then played 1 season with the Mets 1963 and Giants 1964. The 2 time World Champ played 2143 games over 18 seasons, collecting 2116 hits, 407 HRs and 1333 RBIs with a .295 batting average. Snider was an 8-time All Star that led the league with 199 hits in 1950. In 1956 Snider led the league with 43 HRs which was a career high. Over 5 seasons from 1953-1957, Snider had 40 or more HRs. Like Musial, Snider served in the Navy in 1945 played in the Dodgers minor league teams until his MLB debut in April 1947. The Dodgers moved to Los Angeles and the new digs were not kind to the sore knees that Snider had. By 1961 Snider was limited to a part time player as age slowed him down. I remember Snider most as the smooth voice of the Montreal Expos from 1973-1986.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed Free Agent SP Fred Norman. The 27 year old was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in the last season he pitched, 1967 for the Cubs in 1 game. Norman's career has been rocky to this point, as he has spent much of 5 seasons in the minors for the Athletics and Cubs. The screw-ball pitcher made his MLB debut in September 1962 for the Kansas City Athletics.

The St Louis Cardinals have released 1B Bill White, the 36 year old hit .211 with 0 HRs and 4 RBIs in 49 games for the Cardinals in 1969. White spent 13 years in the MLB and maybe his best, 1963 when he hit .27 HRs and 109 RBIs with 200 hits. White hit over .300 with at least 100 RBIs in 3 straight seasons from 1962-1964. He was a 1964 World Series champ, an 8-time All Star and a 7-time Gold Glover.

The Boston Red Sox have released RP Ron Kline. The 37 year old was 0-1 with 6 saves, a 1.50 ERA in 38 games for the Red Sox (26) Giants (6) and Pirates (6) in 1969. Kline made his debut with the Pirates in April 1962, he led the league with 18 losses in 1956 for the Pirates and again with 16 losses in 1958 with the Pirates.

The Oakland Athletics have traded LF Mike Hershberger, SP Lew Krausse, C Phil Roof and CL Ken Sanders to the Milwaukee Brewers for 2B Ron Clark and 1B Don Mincher. The 30 year old Hershberger hit .254 with 2 HRs and 11 RBIs in 47 games for the Athletics. Hershberger made his debut with the White Sox in 1961 and led the league with 7 Sac Flys in 1966. The 26 year old Krausse was 5-6 with a 5.06 ERA in 22 games for the Athletics. Krausse was caught in the cross hairs of Charlie Finlay when he was suspended by the Athletics for rowdyism in 1967. The 28 year old Roof hit .194 with 5 HRs and 27 RBIs in 86 games for the Athletics. The 28 year old Sanders did not play in 1969. The 27 year old Clark hit .188 with 0 HRs and 12 RBIs in 61 games for the Pilots (Brewers) and Twins in 1969. The 31 year old Mincher hit .231 with 18 HRs and 49 RBIs in 145 games for the Pilots. Mincher is the one of 5 players on the Twins that set a record with 5 HRs in an inning in 1966. The others to hit HRs that inning were Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, Rich Rollins and Zoilo Versalles.

The MLB Commissioner Bowie Kuhn has announced the suspension of Detroit Tigers SP Denny McLain for 3 months effective April 1st, 1970. McLain is suspected to be involved in a bookmaking operation. The 25 year old was 20-17 with 1 save, a 2.64 ERA in 41 starts for the Tigers last year.

The New York Yankees have purchased the contract of 1B Ron Hanson from the Chicago White Sox. The 31 year old hit .209 with 7 HRs and 26 RBIs in 115 games for the White Sox in 1969. Hanson was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1960 with the Orioles. Hansen missed the complete 1957 season due to sciatica, lower back and leg pain. He did make it to the bigs as a full time player in 1960 and won the Rookie of the Year award with 22 HRs and 86 RBIs. Hansen was traded to the White Sox with Hoyt Wilhelm for Luis Aparicio in 1963. Hansen missed much of the 1966 season with again his back injury and required surgery. After another trade to the Senators took place, he was the 8th man to ever complete an "unassisted triple play" in history during the 1968 season.

The Milwaukee Brewers have finally completed the purchase of the Seattle Pilots to an organization led by Bud Selig. The price is rumoured at $10.8 M and with the short notice, the season tickets will go on sale April 1st. Team equipment will be altered to the Brewers logo as there is not enough time to get new uniforms.

The Washington Senators have signed Free agent RP Pedro Ramos. The 34 year old was 0-0 with a 4.63 ERA in 8 games (11 IPs) for the Pirates and Reds last year. Ramos led the AL with losses from 1958-1961. Over 4 season's he was credited with 75 losses. Ramos is 1 of 9 players that have been with the original and expansion Senators.

The Milwaukee Brewers have released SP Steve D Barber. The 32 year old was 6-11 with a 4.01 ERA in 24 games including 17 starts for the Pilots in 1969. Not to be confused as superstitious, Barber worn # "13" for most of his career. Barber had one 20 win season, in 1963 he was 20-13 with a 2.75 ERA. On April 30th, 1967 Barber was pulled with 2 outs in the 9th inning in a potential no hitter while still giving up 2 runs. The Orioles went on to no hit the Tigers but lost 2-1. After that, Barber's injury woes affected his success, limiting him to 19 and 17 starts respectively the last 2 seasons.

The 35 year old Snyder hit .220 with 3 HRs and 23 RBIs in 98 games in 1969 for the Indians. A World Series champ with the Orioles in 1966, Snyder's made a diving catch on September 22, 1966 that ended the game that clinched the Orioles the pennant. Snyder finished 3rd in voting for the 1959 AL Rookie of the Year. The 32 year old Alvis hit .206 with 4 HRs and 23 RBIs in 66 games for the Indians. The 2-time All Star led the AL with 10 HBP in 1963 and again in 1965 with 9. Alvis was hampered by spinal meningitis in 1964 but made a comeback in 1965 hitting 21 HRs but has had a more limited role with the Indians in 1969. The 25 year old Coggins did not play in 1969 in the MLB but last played in 1968. The 24 year old Foster has not played in the MLB yet.

In his MVP season, Versalles got 19 of 20 first place votes, the other went to teammate Tony Oliva. Versalles is rumoured to be on his way to Mexico to play in the Mexican League this year.

The Montreal Expos will be without the services of C John Bateman for 3 weeks as he was placed on the DL. The 29 year old hit .219 with 5 HRs and 27 RBIs in 90 games for the Expos last year. The Atlanta Braves will be without SP Ron Reed for 2-3 months as he was placed on the DL. The 27 year old was 16-10 with 1 save, a 2.81 ERA in 33 starts for the Braves in 1969. Facts....... and more Facts.

The 1970 season batting title was not close in National League, Atlanta Braves LF Rico Carty hit .366 with 25 HRs and 101 RBIs in 136 games for the Braves. Well so far in this SIM, Carty is hitting the identical .366. In 1970 Carty got off to a great start and was hitting .435 on May 3rd and had 8 HRs. At 6'3 the "Beeg Mon" spent most of his career batting around that .300 mark including 1974 when he hit .363. Carty missed the entire 1968 season when he contracted "tuberculosis" and throughout his Braves years had various run ins with teammates such as Hank Aaron and Ron Reed.

California Angels LF Alex Johnson won the AL batting title. Johnson hit .329 with 14 HRs and 86 RBIs in 156 games for the Angels in 1970. So far in the SIM, Johnson is hitting a woeful .193 with 0 HRs and 6 RBIs so he would need to get on his horse. On this date in real life Johnson was hitting .337 with 2 HRs. Johnson won the NL batting in the SIM in 1969. In real life, 1970 was the only season Johnson had more then 200 hits. Johnson was considered all bat, no defense. In two seasons prior in Cincinnati, Johnson led the NL in "OF" errors. In a tight race with Carl Yastrzemski for the AL batting title, Johnson went 2 for 3 to pull ahead of "Yaz" and then pulled by the Angels to ensure his title.

Boston Red Sox 1B Carl Yastrzemski finished just slightly behind Johnson in the 1970 batting title race hitting .329 as well. ( Johnson .3290) Yastrzemski (.3286) in a pretty tight race. "Yaz" had won 3 batting titles already in his career (1963 .321) (1967 .326) and (1969 .301* the lowest average to win the title in MLB history). In this SIM in 1970, the 30 year old is hitting .325 with 1 HR and 8 RBIs in 21 games. Yastrzemski was a AL Triple Crown winner in 1967 winning the batting title, HR title (44) and RBI title (121) which also led to the MVP award.

As mentioned earlier, the National League batting title race was never close in 1970. The 2nd place finisher in the NL was Cardinals C Joe Torre. The 29 year old hit .325 with 21 HRs and 100 RBIs and only in 1971 did Torre have more hits. The closest to the top Torre had finished previously was 4th in 1964 when he hit .321. Torre would win at batting title in 1971 while also leading the NL with RBIs. Torre hit the first HR in Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium in 1966.

Pittsburgh Pirates C Manny Sanguillen finished 5th in the MLB for hitting, he hit .325 with 7 HRs and 61 RBIs in 128 games for the Pirates. Coming off a season in the SIM where he hit .330 (.303 in RL), a season where Sanguillen was selected as an All Star. Sanguillen would break the .300 barrier two more times in his real life career, in 1971 he hit .319 and in 1975 he hit .328. Sanguillen is off to a slow start in the SIM hitting just .255. Sanguillen rarely walks, he would love to chase pitches and turn them into base hits. Sanguillen was a close friend to Pirate teammate Roberto Clemente, and should have been on the plane with Clemente that crashed and killed Clemente in 1972 if not for some misplaced car keys.
