Royals Take 2 From Twins

April 12, 2011 ~ Royals 9 Twins 6. In his second start of the season, J. Bonderman still has not shown any signs of being the #4/5 pitcher the Royals were hoping for when they signed him to the free agent contract. Despite having a 5-0 and 6-1 lead, Bonderman could not hold it together for the Royals and ended up leaving the game after 3 innings with the score tied at 6. Thankfully, the Royals bullpen stepped up to the challenge by having 5 pitchers combine on a 6 inning, 4 hit, o runs scored outing. R. Tejeda (2-1) got the win, while Crow, Collins, and Hochevar each picked up their 2nd holds of the season. Slamming the door shut was Soria who picked up his 3rd save. On the offense front, the Royals had 15 hits, led by Alex Gordon's 3-5 (7th inning double), 2 runs, and 1 rbi day. Butler, Maier, Francoeur, and Getz each had 2 hits on the day. The Hy-Vee Royals Player(s) of the Game went to the Royals bullpen who saved Bonderman's butt by pitching 6 innings of 4 hit ball, allowed 0 runs and struck out 5.

April 13, 2011 ~ Royals 5 Twins 1. What a day for the young Kyle Davies. Facing the Twins, Davies (2-0) pitched 7 1/3 innings, scattering only 1 hit, allowing 0runs, and striking out 7. Davies finished with a GameScore of 79 and is quickly proving to be the ace of the team. R. Tejeda finished the last 1 2/3 innings, giving up 1 hit (1 ER) and striking out 2. As for the Royals offense, they were able to smack 12 hits on the day with B. Butler (3-5), A. Escobar (2-4 with 3 rbi's), and C. Getz (2-4) being the big hitters on the day. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to K. Davies for his 7 1/3 innings of 1 hit, shutout ball (7 k's).

Season Record: 5-6 (1/2 GB, 2nd Place)

Mariners Rough Up Royals - Take 3 of 4 From KC
What a letdown for the team after the Royals had been playing so well as of late. The joys of running a small-market, low budget, minimal “star” laden team.

April 14 ~ Seattle 5 - KC 2:
Jeff Francis (1-2) squared off with rookie phenom M. Pineda (1-0) in the first of a four game series. KC kept the game close, leading 2-0 after 5 innings and down 4-2 after 8 innings, yet untimely errors continue to haunt the Royals. Francis went 8 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs (2 earned), while striking out 4 for a game score of 55. A. Crow pitched the 9th for the Royals, allowing 1 hit (sole blast by M. Tuiasosopo) and striking out 3 batters. The Royals had 11 hits on the day, led by K. Ka’aihue and Butler (3rd inning double) with 3 hits each, and with Cabrera chipping in 2 hits. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Jeff Francis for another fine, but wasted, outing.

April 15 ~ Seattle 8 - KC 7:
Despite scoring 7 runs and banging out 13 hits, the Royals once again could not string the hits together when needed. As GM Chowderhead noted in his post-game conference, there is always a fair bit of uncertainty when running out a young pitcher like M. Montgomery (0-2); there is a lot of ups and downs when using such a promising, but very raw, pitcher. Today was one of those “down” days. Montgomery only managed to last 3 1/3 innings in which he gave up 6 runs (all earned) on 7 hits, walking 5, and striking out only 2 batters. While a combined bullpen effort of Tejeda, Crow, Hochevar, and Collins was able to slow the bleeding, they still allowed 2 additional runs to put the game out reach. The Royals were led on offense by five different hitters (Escobar (2 doubles), Cabrera, Gordon (2nd inning HR), Pena, and Arias) with 2 hits each. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to J. Arias who went 2-4, with 3 runs scored, and 1 walk.

April 16 ~ KC 12 - Seattle 3:
Finally! With the KC hitters putting together another double digit hit total (15), the KC staff was able to get a solid outing from its staff. J. Moyer (1-1) got the start today and did not disappoint, going 8 innings of 5 hit, 2 ER, 7 K's ball. While the Bonderman F/A signing has not worked out to well, the signing of the 48 year old lefty has been well worth the cost. Leading the offensive charge on the day was Melky Cabrera (4-5 with 2 doubles) with 3 runs and 4 rbi's and Alex Gordon (3-5 with a 7th inning 3 run blast) with 1 run and 4 rbi's. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Mely Cabrera for his 4-5 day.

April 17 ~ Seattle 12 - KC 0:
OUCH! So much for the offense. King Felix shut the Royals down today, limiting KC hitters to just 4 hits. On a day when the KC hitters could not do anything right, neither could the KC pitching staff. J. Bonderman (0-1) was pounded for 8 hits over 5 2/3 innings, allowing 7 runs (all earned), walking 3 and striking out 4. Bonderman's game score was 26 on the day. The bullpen work of Hochevar and Crow was equally bad, with the two pitchers going a combined 2/3 of an inning, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits and walking 2. This was one of those days that you would just like to soon forget.

Season Record: 6-9 (2 GB, 4th Place)

Royals Split 4 Game Series with Cleveland
I found it funny that scores for each of the two games that KC won were the same winning scores for the Indians in the games they won.

April 18 ~ Cleveland 3 KC 0:
In a game that featured the talents of two young (and promising) starters, the Indians – behind the efforts of Justin Masterson (2-2) were able to shutdown the Royals offense and eek out 2 hits off of Kyle Davies (2-1) to get the win. Davies went 8 1/3 innings, along just 2 hits (dang you Travis Hafner and your 6th inning 3 run blast), struck out 9, and finished with a game score 63. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Davies for another fine, but wasted, outing.

April 19 ~ Cleveland 3 KC 2:
In what is becoming a rather disturbing trend, the Royals wasted another solid outing by one of its young arms. This time, Jeff Francis (pitched 8 innings of 1 run, 3 hit, 7 k ball only to see Soria (0-1, BS 1) come in during the 9th and give up back to back doubles to Santana and Hannahan. Francis’ game score for the outing was 77. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Jeff Francis.

April 20 ~ KC 3 Cleveland 0: What a day for KC pitching, with young M. Montgomery (1-2) going 8 innings, allowing 4 hits, striking out a career high 12 batters, and finished with a 86 game score. J. Soria came in and pitched a perfect 9th inning to earn his 4th save of the year. Melky Cabrera went 3-4 on the day (7th inning triple), scored 2 runs, and drove in 1. Cabrera raised his season batting average to .323 The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Montgomery for his dominating pitching performance, one of the highest for the entire league this year.

April 21 ~ KC 3 Cleveland 2: Tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the 9th inning, M. Aviles smashed a solo-shot of off C. Perez to win the game for the Royals. Jaime Moyer got the start today and went 6 2/3 innings, allowing 0 earned runs on 7 hits, striking out 5, and finishing with a game score of 60. A. Crow (1-0) came in and pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, striking out 4, to earn the win. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Aviles for his game winning blast.

While taking only 2 of 4 games, it was good to see the starters have such high game scores; always nice to get quality starts from the staff.

Season Record: 8-11 ( 1 ½ GB, 3rd Place)

Royals Sweep Rangers, Surge Into 1st Place

April 22 ~ KC 4 Texas 1:
Backed by an offense that pounded out 11 hits, J. Bonderman (1-1) was able to limit the potent Texas offense to just 1 run on the day. Bonderman went 8 innings, allowing 5 hits, 1 run, striking out 4, and a game score of 70. J. Soria came in and pitched a perfect 9th inning to get his 5th save of the season. The KC offense was led by 5 hitters (Cabrera, Butler, Gordon, Pena, and Arias) with 2 hits each. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Bonderman for his solid (and first) outing.

April 23 ~ KC 10 Texas 7:
Despite being staked to a 10-1 lead after 7 innings, K. Davies was not able to close down the Texas offense, giving up 6 runs over the next 1 1/3 innings, before being bailed out by J. Soria who earned his 6th save of the year. While K. Davies was not able to continue the string of solid pitching outings, the Royals hitters came alive, led by Billy Butler's 4-5 (1 double and 2 homeruns) 3 run, 5 rbi day. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Butler for his career day.

April 24 ~ KC 3 Texas 2: It took 12 innings to complete, but KC was able to keep its winning streak alive. Thanks to a 11th inning, 2 run blast by Alex Gordon, the Royals took over sole possession of 1st place. Gordon was 2-4 on the day, with 1 run, 2 rbi's, and 1 walk. Jeff Francis kept KC in the game by going 8 innings in which he allowed 3 hits, 1 run, and struck out 2. Francis, despite not getting the win, did end up with a game score of 73. Tejada (3-1) pitched 2 innings of perfect ball and Collins earned his 1st save of the year. The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Alex Gordon for his game-winning 2 run blast.

KC is now on a 5 game winning streak!

Season Record: 11-11 ( 1st Place)

The screen grabs come from me "capturing" the screens with the phone and emailing to myself so I can upload it. I wish there was an easier way, as it does take some time to do this. I did notice that they look much "cleaner" on my system (given the resolution settings of my laptop) then they do on my work computer. The actual photos are ones I found on the net' and upload. Thanks for following along - it is nice to know that I am not the only one reading the thread

Royals Take 2 of 3 From Cleveland

April 26 ~ KC 4 Cleveland 1: KC pounded out 14 hits to back the strong outing of Luke Hochevar (1-1). Hochevar went 8 innings, scattering 4 hits, allowing 1 run, striking out 6 and finishing with a game score of 75. J. Soria pitched a solid 9th to gain his 7th save of the seaon. The KC offense was led by K. Ka'aihue's 4-5 day (all singles). The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game went to Hochevar for getting his first win of the year.

April 27 ~ Cleveland 8 KC 2:The winning streak finally came to an end on a day when the Royals hitters just could not get going against J. Germano (2-2). Taking the loss for KC was J. Bonderman (1-2) who gave up 3 runs (all earned) on 5 hits and a season high 5 walks. The bullpen efforts of Crow and Lincoln did not fare much better, giving up 5 runs on 4 hits in 1/3 of an inning. 3 Royals batters had 2 hits (Escobar, Aviles, and Arias). The Hy-Vee Royals Player of the Game was a tough one to pick given the loss, but the lone bright spot was Arias who went 2-4 (9th inning double) with 2 rbi's and 1 stolen base.

April 28 ~ KC 12 Cleveland 2: Watch out for Jaime Moyer! The 48 year old pitcher had a banner day, going 8 innings, allowing only 1 earned run on 4 hits and struck out 6. Moyer moved to 2-1 on the season and finished with a game score of 73. The big hitter on the day was Jeff Francoeur who went 5-5 with 2 runs scored, 2 rbi's and his batting .432 on the season.

One issue to note is the play of 3rd baseman J. Arias who committed 2 more errors and now has 11 in just 25 games. This is one area (team defense) that will need to be addressed very soon.

Season Record: 13-12 (1st Place)
