The list is a formula that was created by a friend on the boards about 10 year ago. I have modified it and added to it after every season. Feel free to use or modify.

Here’s a question for ya. When you create a season are you going into the create a fictional league? I did that but then the teams don’t look anything like what they’re suppose to. Like the ‘80 Phillies they made black and gold.

Yes I create a fictional season of 8 teams with the 1986 settings. I then delete all teams and free agents. Then I add the 8 historical teams and that imports the rosters. You are correct, the teams when imported look nothing like they should, so I customize the uniforms and stadiums manually so that they get back on point.

Season 8
FINAL

2007 RED SOX DECIMATE SEASON 8

Once the curse was broken in 2004, the Red Sox went into winning mode and the 2007 season and team delivered in season 8. The Red Sox won 111 games and lead the pennant race for the entire season. Boston was first in runs with 860 as David Ortiz hit 55 home runs and Mike Lowell drove in 117 runs. Daisuke Matsuzaka won 28 games and even missed two weeks while the rest of the rotation had a 3.11 ERA with the likes of Curt Schilling and John Lester doing their thing. There is no doubt how good this team is, and Terry Francona leads them in a way that they can play with anyone. Truly an impressive pennant season for Boston.

The 2003 Cubs may be known for heartbreak, but the club Dusty Baker put together won 105 games and were lead by the season's best arm. Mark Prior struck out 384 batters while throwing in 303 innings as the Cubs had 4 twenty game winning pitchers. Sammy Sosa did his best Babe Ruth impression hitting 60 home runs, most of them coming in a scorching second half, while Aramis Ramirez hit over 50. Chicago lost only 24 games in Chicago and had a team ERA under 2.50, something impressive throwing at Wrigley Field.

The 2014 Kansas City Royals made sure that they punched their ticket to the next round. Jason Vargas was the ace of a rotation that had some up and downs going 24-9 with a 3.23 ERA. Danny Duffy and James Shields lost a combined 32 games. Salvador Perez shined as the best of combinations for a catcher hitting .298 and carrying 114 RBI. Another true strength of this team was their bullpen and the unit had a 3.49 ERA and were lead by Wade Davis who pitched lights out with over 30 saves. This well rounded Royals team may not be dominant, but play the game the right way in any era.

The 1977 Pirates finished over 30 games out of first place and didnt even have a winning record but were good enough to finish in the top four. Bill Robinson came out of nowhere to hit 39 home runs and 111 RBI in support of Dave Parker and Al Oliver. Pitching was another issue all together as Jerry Ruess lost 20 games and the team ERA ranked 6th in the league. Team defense for Pittsburgh also wasnt the greatest but the club recovered in the second half of the season especially in August where they won 18 games. Willie Stargell only started in 20 games all season and hit .156.

At spot number five is where the teams really seem to fall off. The 1917 New York Giants lead the league with a .278 batting average and Heimie Zimmerman hit .328 but of course that is only half the story. The pitching staff was taxed with a load of innings and the likes of Slim Sallee lost 21 games. Injuries didnt help the cause and the Giants lost 21 games by only one run. The team had the fewest extra base hits and the pitching staff for the Giants had the league worse BABIP which concludes poor luck and poor defense.

Alot more could be expected from the go go 1959 Chicago White Sox, but in the end they only hustled out to 68 wins. Pitching was the thorn for this team with the league worse bullpen and Early Wynn the only starter with an ERA under 4 (3.98). Al Smith hit 36 home runs and drove in 105 runs while Norm Cash slammed 35 home runs from his spot, but the Sox were not good enough to play the high scoring power games with the likes of the Red Sox and Cubs. A nine win September killed any and all hopes of finishing better in the race.

Injuries, bad defense, and the least scored runs in the league were all the perfect combination for the 1920 Robins to lose 95 games. The outfield was decimated as Hi Myers and Sherry Smith were lost to injury while 180 errors by the defense made for a fortune of follies. The starting pitching lead by Rube Marquard battled as best they could and an impressive closer, Jeff Pfeffer, saved 36 games with some real dominance. Zack Wheat hit .331 while Zack Taylor even better at .362 but total home runs and steals under 50 were not up to par in the race. This Boston team also couldnt beat a right hander to save their life, they were 43-71 against them for the duration.

The 1917 Chicago White Sox played like the opposite of a champion. They lost 104 games and never seemed to get it together. Eddie Ciccote looked sharp for the duration of the season and threw over 300 innings but the remainder of the rotation was beyond poor. Red Faber lost 27 games and allowed a staggering 44 home runs. Jack Fournier was a hammer at the plate and Buck Weaver hit .315 but the team lacked a real appetite for winning and even the likes of Eddie Collins just could not get them going. Thats the unique side of this project, every season we see what was considered one of the best teams in the history of the game, finish in last place and on unfamiliar ground.

Season 9
FINAL

Manny Leaves Bonds In Dust

Barry Bonds and his big bat were outshined and left behind in season 9 as the dependable Braves lead by Bobby Cox took the pennant with 105 wins. The Braves big three all won over 20 games with John Smoltz leading the charge with 24 wins. Mark Wholers saved 38 games and had an ERA of 0.97 as teams had little success scoring against any Braves arms. Javy Lopez drove in over 100 runs and Atlanta hit the most long balls in the league with 226. A well balanced team from top to bottom that plays fundamental defense and a confident poise, there is few better season long teams then a Braves team of this era.

The 1943 St. Louis Cardinals had the best offense in the season and scored the most runs as they manged a .280 team average. The Cardinals overcame a season ending injury to young Stan Musial while Whitey Kurowski and Danny Liwhiler carried the load well and both drove in over 110 runs. Max Lanier on the mound was the ace the team needed with a sparkling 2.44 ERA and 21 wins. This Cardinal team and Cardinal era are just about as good as it gets, and the quality of baseball is off the charts.

The 1995 Cincinnati Reds took a different approach to winning games and it wasnt from the generation they come from. The Reds ran their way to 3rd place with Barry Larkin stealing 121 bases and and hitting .322 from the top of the order. The team stole 331 bases and had boppers like Ron Gant and Reggie Sanders to get the big hits. The Reds were 21-8 in August to make a solid run as David Wells won 18 games and Xavier Hernandez came out of nowhere to save 37. Pete Schourek had a fine season to bolster the club even more with a 2.44 ERA in 39 starts. The Reds also made the least amount of errors in the league.

Manny Ramirez makes sure everyone remembers what he does. In this season the slugger has the best chance to be MVP after hitting 48 home runs and driving in 132 runs, both to lead the league including anyone by the name of Bonds. The Indians were in a fight for 4th for most of the season but a fine last two months of the season saw them through. Charles Nagy won 20 games and Bartolo Colon was right behind him with 18; Colon especially was key down the stretch. The Indians lead the league in strikeouts but didnt have a particularly strong pen. Jim Thome and David Justice had subpar years, both hitting under .250 with less then 30 home runs.

The champion 2006 Cardinals will be stunned to not be moving on a Tony Larussa had alot ro deal with this season. The pitching arms for this team just were not up to par and allowed the most long balls and the most long faces. Chris Carpenter was really the only dependable arm winning 20 games but Jeff Suppan lost 21 and Mark Mulder never got on his game. Albert Pujols did his thing with 35 home runs and Jim Edmonds was not far begind with 29, but Yadier Molina hit .229 and a real lack of speed and a leadoff man failed to generate big innings. St. Louis really fell out of it in September winning only 11 games and watching the Indians surge past them.

It was a good season for Barry Bonds who hit 42 home runs and drove in 106 runs, but it wasnt a super human season that the 2003 Giants needed. Bonds heard the boos all season long but he should have been booing his teamates who had a league low .241 league average. Jason Schmidt had a really good season leading with a 2.25 ERA and 22 winsas the Giants arms were pretty good. The Giants had a losing record everymonth and could not put a winning streak together much less win the big games against the top teams, they only beat the Braves four times all season. The depth just wasnt there for Dusty Baker.

Lack of pitching was the reason and the bog red flag for the 1927 Pirates who lost 103 games. A starters ERA of 5.78 and a real lack of any dependable arm left this team depleted and sore by the end of the season. Lee Meadows allowed 34 home runs in his 41 starts and lost 23 games. The Waner brothers at the top of the lineup were fun to watch and Paul hit .349 while Pie Traynor drove in 96 runs. The team was dead last in home runs with their leader being Earl Smith with 11. Pittsburgh in the end just wasnt confident or strong enough for the long stretch of 162.

Wartime teams often struggle when they play the full rosters of other eras, such was the case for the 1945 Tigers who one could forget quickly were once champions. The Tigers lost 107 games, scored the fewest runs in the league, and played the worst defense. By any standard the season was a disaster and a string of injuries to starting pitching like Tommy Bridges and Virgil Trucks set the dooming stage, Hank Greenberg did bang out 35 home runs in the cleanup spot while Eddie Mayo filled in well as a leadoff man, but not a single bat was over .300 for this club. The team won 15 games after August 1st and only 6 in all of September.
