Elyrian Baseball League

The Elyrian Baseball League

Map of the island of Elyria with team locations

Elyria is an environmentally stunning and socially progressive nation located south of the equator and to the east of the Republic of Brahmann and to the northwest of the United Commonwealth of The Tarim Islands and South Winchester. It has a well-earned reputation as a pristine gem of nature, seemingly untouched by the human hand. The undulating white-capped mountains and emerald green forests seem to extend all the way to the internationally-famous golden beaches and swaying palm trees at which the Southern Ashington Sea laps.

The truth is more complex. Commuter trains carefully connect the massive population of the country to the hub of the country, Clayton, whose sleek metal and glass towers rise like mountains. The population, while environmentally conscious, has also managed to carve out a chunk of the land for its own advancement. It is from the capital that the nation's resources, information, and trends flow to the rest of the country. But despite the seeming air of indifference given to organized sports by most, there exists an unquenchable spirit to compete, to succeed, to become legend.

From the golden beaches to the mountains, this spirit has been heard in the crack of wood upon leather, from professional teams to two kids who desire to achieve their dreams. At last, the government has decided to fund a national baseball league, the nation's favorite pastime, to compete in international competitions. Without further ado, introducing Elyria!

Most of the largest cities in Elyria only have one team, except for East Winslow, with both the Stags and Buccaneers playing in the Continental League. They have a ferocious inter-city rivalry that has no equal in any other sports rivalry in the country. This will test the limits of those players' tolerance for each other on this team.

The Alameda Outlaws, Soulard Apache, and Tamarac Unforgiven are all part of the Continental League North. The New Charleroi Vipers, Oakdale Park Ravens and Melrose Park Centaurs are all part of the Continental League South. The final few teams, the Elyria Continentals, Emmaus Pelicans, Old Town Thugs are a part of the National League, along with the Ladue Ducks, Clayton Crows and Leyden Seals.

Elyria is best described as an island nation. However, most Elyrians live on the largest island, which is referred to by locals as the mainland, due to its size and role as a population and commercial center for the country.

The mainland is mostly flat grassland and plains, though forests and hilly areas exist and are generally scattered throughout the island. Running north to south are the Harmony Mountains, named for Mt. Harmony near the capital city of Clayton. There is a smaller range on the east side of the island called the Soulard Mountains named after the only city around them. The mountain range squishes all the cities into the central and southern half of the mainland into central and southern geographic regions, and was once home to dozens of active volcanoes. However, no eruption has occurred in the Harmony Mountains in over 800 years, and the range is believed to be inactive. The ancient volcanic activity on the mainland (and on many of Elyria’s smaller islands, as well) resulted in mineral deposits from which Elyrian miners have extracted gold, silver, and other valuable materials for export.

Two notable exceptions to the mainland's grassy majority are the Greentree Forest and Western Desert. The Greentree Forest is more of a jungle than a temperate forest, and is widely considered the most dangerous region in Elyria due to its large numbers of wild carnivorous species, some of which would be considered "mythical" by foreigners. Within the Greentree Forest is the city of Melrose, located along the banks of the Magali River and home to the largest population of non-human in the nation. A number of more typical temperate forests surround the Greentree Forest itself.

The Western Desert is (as one might expect) a dry region located in a small pocket of flat land surrounded by the Harmony Mountains near the Western coast. The only major population center in the Western Desert is the small city of Tamarac, located in what could be considered by some as a cooler oasis.

But where things begin to get weird for the average tourist is Elyria’s weather. Due to the magical nature of many of its inhabitants, Eyrians are fully capable of creating, manipulating, and otherwise controlling the clouds and weather. This gives them the ability to determine where and when in rains, snows, hails, or any other. Elyria’s government is very actively involved in coordinating the pegasai of the country to generate and control weather patterns favorable to Elyrian inhabitants (and its many farmers, in particular). As such, the odds of an Elyrian weatherghoul giving an incorrect forecast are almost nonexistent, unless you happen to be in the Everfree Forest (the only region of Elyria where the weather is practically impossible to control due to a prevalence of wild magic).

Travel

Travelling to Elyria is generally easy, as most methods of interregional travel are available to visitors from outside the Rachana Lands. Most international flights to Elyria arrive at Tamarac’s Harmony International Airport, but other regularly-used airports such as Clayton’s Royal International and Ladue’s Friendship Heights International are easy to find flights to. However, it should be noted that pilots flying to and from Elyria internationally must receive additional certification due to the nature of Elyria and much of the Rachana Lands. Because of this additional requirement for pilots, some airlines do charge extra to cover the training fees.

Another common way of reaching the island is via sea. Emmaus’s seaport is among the most active in the Rachana Lands, and isn't located far from the heart of Elyria’s largest city.

Once in Elyria, there are many other options for travel. Rental cars, taxis, and busses are easy to find in the larger cities such as Bonhomme, Elyria, and Melrose, though one might notice that most vehicles are electric-powered. But while cars and busses are regularly used in some cities, there are also several in which their use is limited to emergency services (most notably in Alameda and Oakdale’s Old City district) or is totally banned (as is the case in Soulard).

However, the limited use of automobiles is balanced out by the proliferation of trains for travel between and within cities. Some of the more prominent and historical lines (such as the East Winslow-Clayton Express) still use steam-powered engines or high-speed trains designed to mimic the classical appearance of an Elyrian train. Subways are also a common feature in Elyrian cities, spreading underground to connect many places of interest for foreign tourists. Soulard is the only city where buses, and trains/subways are unavailable.

But in the end, the most common method of travel in Elyria is one's own two feet (or whatever you have to walk on). Few Elyrians drive or use public transportation unless they have to, preferring to take in the clean air on their way from place-to-place.

Culture & Society

Language

Traditionally, Elyrians have spoken in their native Elyritongue which is common throughout the Rachana Lands. However, since the emergence of Elyria into the international community, laws have been passed requiring citizens to be capable of speaking multiple languages. The most common non-Elyrian language is easily English, which is spoken by approximately two-thirds of the population. It should be noted that some English words have been altered by Elyrians to better fit the equine majority, as the use of "everyelyri", "anyelyri", "baseball", and other such words are modifications of the more standard English words. Mastery of many different languages is especially common among Unicorns, and as they are generally the ones more involved in business, are easy enough to find for foreign visitors. Numerous translating services exist throughout Elyria, and airport bookstores generally contain a plethora of multilingual dictionaries for purchase.

Food

As one might expect from a nation dominated by a species of herbivores, many traditional Elyrian dishes are vegetarian in nature. The proliferation of such food is also furthered by the general lack of agriculture for the purpose of raising up animals for the slaughter. To hurt another living creature is, to many Elyrians, simply unthinkable. However, Elyria is not only inhabited by humans, but also by griffons, dragons, and equines (among others). Restaurants do exist to cater to these non-human species, and do serve a wide variety of meats imported from outside of the region. That being said, it would be unwise to be seen in public eating a hamburger made from beef or any other meat product as many Elyrians are disgusted by such foods. This can make finding food difficult in smaller cities and in the nicer areas of the larger ones. A general tip would be: if your waiter looks like a herbivore, don't ask them for a cheeseburger or steak. Elyrian cafes are fairly creative with what they can do with non-meat products, and the bread and pastries are oftentimes better than what you might find in other nations.

Drink in Elyria also differs significantly from other nations around the multiverse, as the most common alcoholic beverage is hard cider, which can be found at virtually every bar, pub, and restaurant. Ponies generally refrain from drinking too heavily, but other non-human sapients such as griffons are known to consume vast quantities of alcohol in a single sitting. We advise our human readers to graciously decline any drinking challenges offered, as one is unlikely to win, and drunk griffons can be notoriously temperamental. Beer is a distant second to cider, in terms of both popularity and availability, though bars and eateries which cater to human tourists will often keep domestic Elyrian brands in stock.

Pre-Season League Predictions-

Continental League

National League

Blank Standings-

Pre-season news-

Star Third Baseman's Son Starts at Exclusive School: Today was a big day for Theodore House, son of the Ladue Ducks right- hander, Luke House. It was his first day of kindergarten at the touted Ladue private academy, Winthrop Acres.

Theodore passed multiple aptitude exams in order to be accepted into the school, which has only 400 children over all 13 grades.

"Today is such a special moment for Theo and I am just so proud," said House. "When I became a parent I never imagined the love and joy that he could bring me and I'm just so delighted to see Theo go to a school that can cultivate his academic desires."

This experience, coupled with the House family's recent purchase of a luxury penthouse, show just how committed a third baseman the Ducks have in Luke House.

League Suspends Myers 4 Games: The Tamarac Unforgiven were not very happy with the home plate umpire in today's loss to New Charleroi at Spring Ballpark. One in particular -- Steve Myers. Upon being called out on strikes, the Unforgiven catcher gave the ump quite an earful. For that, the man in blue gave him the thumb and sent him to an early shower.

But the disgruntled Myers lingered on the field for another five minutes, berating the umpire. Finally his manager got him off the field and into the clubhouse.

But it got worse after the game, when Myers told reporters, "He was blind today. They played 'Three Blind Mice' for him. If he doesn't know the words to the song, I'm sure we can get it in Braille, so he can follow along."

For his escapades and after-the-game oration, the league office suspended Myers for 4 games.

Danny Buza Will Miss 4 Weeks: Clayton fans will be disappointed to learn that Danny Buza suffered a strained back muscle while throwing a pitch in today's game. After the doctor informed the Clayton Crows manager that Buza was expected to miss 4 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the reliever could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

Latest Injury Report on Hayden: Sam Hayden expressed disappointment but also relief after finding out he would be out 7 months with a broken bone in the elbow he suffered on 03/06/2157. Speaking to a reporter at the team's clubhouse, Hayden, the Emmaus right fielder said, "I'd rather know than not know. I'll just take it one day at a time."

Latest Injury News for Eggen: A blow for Josh Eggen today -- team doctors were able to determine the full extent of his recent injury. He will miss 7 months with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. Eggen suffered the injury on 03/07/2157. The team will likely place Eggen on the disabled list today.

Handley to Miss 4 Months: Ryan Handley expressed disappointment but also relief after finding out he would be out 4 months with a torn triceps he suffered on 03/19/2157. Speaking to a reporter at the team's clubhouse, Handley, the New Charleroi starting pitcher said, "I'd rather know than not know. I'll just take it one day at a time."

Bernard Out 5 Months: A blow for Nick Bernard today -- team doctors were able to determine the full extent of his recent injury. He will miss 5 months with a torn rotator cuff. Bernard suffered the injury on 03/22/2157. The team will likely place Bernard on the disabled list today.

Leyden Owner Berkshire Passes Away, Son Replaces Him: Despondent and forlorn are the streets of Leyden today. The Leyden Seals baseball team has lost its leader, owner Mike Berkshire. He died suddenly yesterday, while on vacation. Club officials briefed the press today on the situation and released funeral plans. Services will be held day after tomorrow in Leyden. As far as who will take over for Berkshire, the Leyden Seals spokesman indicated it would be dealt with in the near future, but he had no word on who the successor would be. Press speculation is that Berkshire's son, Zach, would be his replacement as owner. The younger Berkshire was characterized by sources high up in the Leyden Seals hierarchy as economizer when it comes to money and tolerant when it comes to management.

Licastro Out of Commission 5-6 Months: The New Charleroi Vipers have made it official: Ryan Licastro is headed to the disabled list. The 20-year-old starting pitcher has been out since 03/24/2157 with a torn rotator cuff. He is expected to miss 5-6 months.

East Winslow Loses Hanson for Season: Dave Hanson, the East Winslow reliever, was less than thrilled to learn that his recent injury would keep him out of the rest of the season and any postseason action.

"The playoffs?" he said. "Are you kidding me? The playoffs?"

Hanson has a torn rotator cuff, an injury that has hampered him since 03/29/2157.

Austin Dial Offers Praise for Brewer: Jason Brewer is getting all kinds of endorsements regarding his future in the league, even from other teams.

One of those rare characters who possesses personal and professional skills that not only improve his team, Brewer is expected to improve the popularity and quality of the league and the sport of baseball. But there are questions about whether too much praise comes with a price.

"It's not always a good thing to slap a label on a kid, even if it's a good one," said Clayton manager Austin Dial. "There's no doubt in my mind that he has the leadership skills and maturity to become a great contributor, but writing award articles before there's any performance creates a lot of pressure to succeed. Even the dollar payoff doesn't offset stress, in fact it often just adds to it."

Brewer doesn't mind being called the future face of the franchise, but agrees that it means he has a lot to live up to.

"Hey, I will always do the best I can and do whatever's asked of me. Predictions are flattering, but they don't change what I am. They don't make be better or worse. I don't let it get in my head," he added. "If I let success get in there, then I'm bound to let failures get in there, too."

The Clayton Crows are certain that Brewer will fill up seats and provide a leadership role as the club continues to grow. Team owner, Dave Sagers, summed it up when he remarked, "Jason is just the kind of investment good bankers make. You know, you absolutely know, it's going to pay dividends. You don't tinker with the goods, you just put all your resources into them and watch them grow. "

Top 100 Prospects List Published: The season is about to start, so it's time to publish the annual Top 100 Prospects list. This year 25-year-old LF Jeff Kisner of the Melrose Park Centaurs is the #1 prospect overall.

Here is the top 10:
1) LF Jeff Kisner, 25, Melrose Park Centaurs

My girlfriend's surname is Winslow, so I suppose I'm obliged to support one of the East Winslow teams Come on you Stags!

The backstory is wonderful, and I really like the fantasy elements thrown in too. Having things like 'weatherghouls' is certainly a fun little device. Hope to see more of this! ^ ^

Here is the standings after 10 games played in the regular season

Tamarac and Trinidad City jumping out to early leads in their divisions, New Charleroi and Elyria lagging behind so far.

League news
Kulesza Shuts Out Thugs: Justin Kulesza of the Trinidad City Jets spun his magic on the Old Town Thugs today. He blanked them 8-0 on 5 hits, registering 9 strikeouts and 3 walks.

"The bottom line was I just kept the ball down," Kulesza said. "My breaking stuff was down. Everything was down."

Talking to reporters in the postgame interview, Trinidad City skipper Mike McPherson said the team "got solid pitching, good defense and took great team at-bats in a lot of different situations."

"Justin pitched really well but this was a solid performance by everyone," he said.

Wylie Fires Shutout in Ladue Win: The Ladue Ducks rolled to an easy 6-0 win over the Bonhomme Raiders at Webster & Mitchell Ballpark today. Leading the way to victory was starter Tom Wylie, who shackled the Bonhomme Raiders and held them scoreless on a 2-hitter.

"This is what every pitcher wants to do when they go out there," Wylie said in his postgame press conference.

Kaitz Befuddles Soulard: Today was Danny Kaitz's turn in the rotation for the New Charleroi Vipers and he made the most of it, shutting out the Soulard Apache on 3 hits.

The 26-year-old left-hander led the Vipers to an easy 8-0 victory, allowing 1 walk and tallying 9 strikeouts.

"I hope we miss him next time," Soulard manager Scott Zajac said. "Kaitz certainly pitched a strong game against us today. He was in a groove, throwing everything for strikes. Throwing hard. Changing speeds."

Tamarac-East Winslow Brawl, Gage and Laitala Suspended: You would have thought you were at a hockey game yesterday at Schmidt & Marrah Ballpark. A free-for-all broke out when Kevin Gage of Tamarac and Taylor Laitala of East Winslow rushed one another on the field and had to be restrained by umpires and teammates. Few blows landed, but it was enough for them to be ejected from the game.

Today both teams received notification from the league office that the two players would be suspended for 8 games.

Latest Injury News for Bannister: The East Winslow Buccaneers have made it official: Danny Bannister is headed to the disabled list. The 31-year-old left fielder has been out since 04/06/2157 with a strained hamstring. He is expected to miss 3-4 months.

Elyria No Match for Schreiber: Andrew Schreiber of the Clayton Crows humiliated the Elyria Continentals at Sizemore Park today, spinning a complete game shutout and holding the visitors to 4 hits.

"He stayed aggressive and his ball was really moving," said Elyria manager J.J. Hudson, after the game.

Schreiber whiffed 10 and walked 2 in the 5-0 win.

"If I make good pitches, I'm going to get some outs," Schreiber said. "I was making good pitches the entire game."

Continental League Names Best Player: At the age of 31, Kyle Kunkel might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The East Winslow shortstop put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .500 batting average. For his efforts Kunkel collected the Continentall League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 12 hits in 24 at-bats, 3 home runs and 13 RBIs last week in 6 games.

Howard of Ladue Crowned Best Player: It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Jamie Howard, the Ladue Ducks 25-year-old left fielder, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for National League Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 12 hits in 28 at-bats, compiling a .429 average with 1 home run and 5 RBIs.

BNN Stats: Rookie Batting Leaders: Which rookie is leading the Elyrian Baseball League in on-base percentage?

Jeff Kisner, MP, .556
Joe Duncan, NC, .542
Jon Marinakis, CLA, .517
Brent Nyren, LAD, .500
Aaron Dutton, TC, .481

Troesch Gets Injury Report: The Tamarac Unforgiven have made it official: Tom Troesch is headed to the disabled list. The 26-year-old reliever has been out since 04/10/2157 with a torn labrum. He is expected to miss 4 months.

Tamarac Shuts Out Centaurs, Tucker Winner: Andy Tucker bent a little, but he didn't break against the Melrose Park Centaurs. The Tamarac Unforgiven pitcher hurled a 4-hit 3-0 shutout in a fine performance, surrendering no walks and tallying 9 strikeouts.

"Andy is good at getting out of jams," Unforgiven manager Tim Riley told reporters after the game. "He's almost more effective when he gets guys on base or gets behind in the count, because he uses your aggressiveness against you."

Cochran's Treatment Not Going Well, Suffers Setback: All is not well with John Cochran in his recovery from a strained back muscle.

The 31-year-old Ravens starting pitcher has already reached some significant steps in his rehabilitation, but his manager said that the team will continue to be cautious with Cochran and take his progression one day at a time, especially after the setback yesterday.

"Yesterday he was feeling good but he didn't do a lot on the field," he said. "Today he was supposed to be on the field doing light stuff and then gradually start working right back up. I think he overdid it."

A post-workout examination revealed that Cochran had re-injured himself and would now miss at least 1-2 weeks because of it.

Defoe Set to Miss 4 Months: The East Winslow Stags have made it official: Jimmy Defoe is headed to the disabled list. The 27-year-old right fielder has been out since 04/09/2157 with torn ankle ligaments. He is expected to miss 4 months.

Presently Defoe is batting .438 with 1 home run and 5 RBIs. He has played in 6 games and scored 3 times.

Season Done for Young: Team officials for the Oakdale Park Ravens confirmed that a torn anterior cruciate ligament will force Ron Young to miss the rest of the season. Young sustained the injury on 04/11/2157. It remains to be seen who will replace Young on the active roster.

During the current season Young is batting at a .269 clip with 1 home run and 3 RBIs. He has played in 7 games and scored 3 times.

Beckman Belts 5 Hits: Junior Beckman was on fire today and sparked his club to a 4-2 victory over the Ravens. The Soulard third baseman was a tough out and went 5-for-8 against Oakdale Park in a fine hitting display.

"I got my pitches and I connected. They all found the right holes on the diamond. Some days you hit shots and they're right at somebody and some days they fall in."

Junior Beckman singled in the 2nd, grounded out in the 4th, singled in the 7th, singled in the 9th, struck out in the 10th, singled in the 13th, doubled in the 16th and grounded out in the 18th.

So far on the season Beckman is hitting .333 with 5 home runs, 7 RBIs and 7 runs scored. He has 13 hits and played in 10 games.

Here are the standings after 20 games

Elyria jump up to the top of the NL North Division, Tamarac and Trinidad City stil leading records

League news

Chapman Takes This Week's Trophy: At the age of 31, Jim Chapman might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Tamarac second baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .421 batting average. For his efforts Chapman collected the Continentall League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 8 hits in 19 at-bats, 1 home run and 6 RBIs last week in 6 games.

National League Selects Best Performer: 25-year-old Nate Mazur made a few Emmaus headlines during this past week as the rookie first baseman proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and National League officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.

He cracked 10 hits in 26 at-bats to put up a .385 average. Mazur collected 5 home runs, 16 RBIs and scored 7 runs.

More Woes For Crows Kyle Stackhouse: The Clayton Crows will have to do without right fielder Kyle Stackhouse even longer than expected. Team doctors say that Stackhouse's recovery from an intercostal strain has not gone well and more time will be needed to treat it successfully. The Crows trainer indicated it would be at least 6 days before they would consider activating Stackhouse.

This season Stackhouse has hit at a .270 clip with 5 RBIs, 2 home runs and 6 runs scored. He has played in 9 games.

Season-Ending Injury for Long: "Not what I wanted to hear," said East Winslow's Chris Long to reporters this afternoon, as he revealed that the injury he sustained on 04/17/2157 would force him to miss the rest of the season. "The doctor made it clear," Long said. "There's no chance for me -- none at all -- to come back this year. That's the last thing I wanted to hear." Long has been out of action since he suffered shoulder inflammation.

To this point in the season he has had 1 save. Long has made 5 relief appearances, tossed 9 innings and struck out 7 with a record of no wins and no losses.

Edwards Out of Commission 4-5 Months: The Oakdale Park Ravens have made it official: Pat Edwards is headed to the disabled list. The 28-year-old reliever has been out since 04/20/2157 with shoulder inflammation. He is expected to miss 4-5 months.

For the season Edwards has made 9 relief appearances, recorded no saves and compiled a 1-1 won-lost mark and a 1.13 ERA. In pitching 8 innings, he has totaled 9 strikeouts and 5 walks.

Bernstein Has Hot Hand, Bangs 5 hits: The Bonhomme Raiders tripped up the Emmaus Pelicans 9-1 today. The Raiders were led by Troy Bernstein, their 30-year-old third baseman. Bernstein made life miserable for Emmaus pitchers all day, tagging them for 5 hits in 5 at-bats. Troy Bernstein singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th and hit an RBI single in the 7th.

For the season, Bernstein is hitting at a .382 clip with 2 home runs, 10 RBIs and has scored 9 runs. He has 29 hits, 4 walks and a .420 on-base percentage.

Continental League's #1 Player Named: At the age of 30, Ritchie DeRoy might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Oakdale Park right fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .500 batting average. For his efforts DeRoy collected the Continentall League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 8 hits in 16 at-bats, 2 home runs and 5 RBIs last week in 5 games.

For the season DeRoy is hitting .400, batted in 5 runs with 2 home runs and 4 runs scored.

National League's Star of the Week Chosen: 27-year-old Matt Lovill sent shock waves through Elyrian Baseball League last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the National League Player of the Week Award.

A newcomer to the league, Lovill made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .524 average, 11 hits in 21 at-bats, 1 home run and 4 RBI.

Where the Elyria Continentals third baseman goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Lovill certainly made his mark last week.

So far this season, Lovill has recorded a .319 batting average with 22 hits, 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, 9 runs scored and a .373 OBP.

Trinidad City Loses Jones for Season: After several days of waiting for test results, bad news was delivered to Marc Jones today. The Trinidad City reliever will be out the rest of the year due to bone chips in his elbow he suffered on 04/20/2157.

News Gets Worse for Soulard, Seller: The day has come for Jay Seller to call it a career. The Soulard reliever, because of a torn labrum, has been out of action for a while. Now, he has decided to retire from baseball. He made it official in a brief appearance to reporters. "I was told I've got an outside shot at playing again," he said. "But I've decided to pursue other options at this time." Best of luck to Seller. The team will surely miss him.

Seller has made 6 relief appearances this year and notched no saves. To date in 5.2 innings he has a 0-1 record, 4.76 ERA with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Standings of the Elyrian Baseball League after 30 games

Trinidad City are pulling ahead in the National League South while Tamarac and East Winslow Buccaneers battle for top spot in the Continental League

News around the EBL:

Chapman Grabs CL Best Batter Award for April: Jim Chapman has a lot going for him. The Tamarac second baseman just broke into the majors this year and now the Continentall League has just picked him as its top hitter for April.

In 24 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .341 with 7 home runs, 22 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

Mazur Snags NL Batting Honor in April: Nate Mazur may be much younger than other hitters in the National League, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in April to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 25-year-old Emmaus first baseman hit .299 with 10 home runs, 29 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Reliever Snags CL Top Hurler Trophy: Sean Butler was the anchor in the Tamarac bullpen last month and snatched up the Continentall League Pitcher of the Month honors for April. The 28-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 11.1 innings over 13 relief appearances and collected a 1-0 record with 13 strikeouts and 9 saves while etching his 0.00 ERA.

National League Names #1 Pitcher in April: Any time a rookie makes a splash on the scene, it's got to be great for his career potential. Just ask Justin Pardue, who put together a stellar month out of the pen. The Trinidad City Jets closer, 26, kept the opposition off balance all month as he held them to a .157 average and walked away with the National League Pitcher of the Month award for April.

Pardue posted a 1-1 mark and a 1.80 ERA in 15 relief appearances. In 15 innings, he had 13 saves, 18 strikeouts, and 11 walks.

Tamarac Second Baseman April's #1 Rookie: For a man of advanced years in baseball terms, Jim Chapman is defying all logic by wading through his first Continentall League season. Nonetheless, Chapman is proving a formidable performer for Tamarac, at least as far as this past April is concerned. Today he was hailed as the Continentall League Rookie of the Month.

He put up a .341 average with 7 home runs, 22 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

NL Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Youngster Jon Marinakis emerged as the latest National League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Clayton deserved the honor, batting .367 with 4 home runs and 16 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Marinakis enjoy the limelight.

Edmonson Pitches Old Town to Shutout Victory: Jeff Edmonson humbled the Bonhomme Raiders today at Old Town Field in a shutout win. In the 5-0 victory, the Old Town Thugs starter yielded 3 hits, fanned 10 and walked 1.

"Hard not to go home happy after a game like that," Edmonson said.

Checking out his stats for the season, Edmonson has registered 1 win and 4 losses in 6 starts, 4.75 ERA and struck out 34 batters in 36 innings.

Murray Razor-Sharp, Shuts Out Ladue: Jason Murray of the Trinidad City Jets humiliated the Ladue Ducks at Field of the Jets today, spinning a complete game shutout and holding the visitors to 6 hits.

"He stayed aggressive and his ball was really moving," said Ladue manager Bill Brace, after the game.

Murray whiffed 7 and walked 2 in the 10-0 win.

"If I make good pitches, I'm going to get some outs," Murray said. "I was making good pitches the entire game."

In 5 starts this year Murray has fashioned a 2-0 record and a 4.40 ERA.

CL Star of the Week Picked: At the age of 28, Joe Duncan might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The New Charleroi shortstop put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .524 batting average. For his efforts Duncan collected the Continentall League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 11 hits in 21 at-bats, 3 home runs and 6 RBIs last week in 5 games.

This season Duncan is batting .312 with 14 RBIs, 15 runs scored and 5 home runs.

Dutton National League's Hottest Hitter: 25-year-old Aaron Dutton sent shock waves through Elyrian Baseball League last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the National League Player of the Week Award.

A newcomer to the league, Dutton made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .367 average, 11 hits in 30 at-bats, 2 home runs and 8 runs batted in.

Where the Trinidad City Jets shortstop goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Dutton certainly made his mark last week.

During the current season Dutton is batting at a .309 clip with 6 home runs and 24 RBIs. He has played in 25 games and scored 18 times.

Another Setback For East Winslow's Nate Long: East Winslow Buccaneers shortstop Nate Long is not healing as well as expected as he recovers from a sore back and will miss an additional 5 days as a result. Long had been working with the team medical staff, but was taken to a specialist as a precaution. Examination revealed more damage than originally thought.

So far this season Long has 4 home runs and a .324 batting average.

Connolly Out 4 Weeks: A blow for Matt Connolly today -- team doctors were able to determine the full extent of his recent injury. He will miss 4 weeks with a fractured hand. Connolly suffered the injury on 05/03/2157. The team will likely place Connolly on the disabled list today.

This year Connolly has 1 home run and a .196 batting average.

Standings of the Elyrian Baseball League after 40 games

Trinidad City top NL standings, Clayton and Ladue battle, Bucs and Outlaws top Continental League standings

News from around the EBL

Mashburn Dominates Bonhomme: In an outstanding mound performance, Clayton Crows starter John Mashburn fired a complete-game shutout against the Bonhomme Raiders at Bonhomme City Grounds today.

Mashburn was the key to the Crows's 5-0 win. The 28-year-old right-hander was in high spirits on the mount for much of the game, his mood largely undented by the 3 hits and 1 walk he allowed.

"3 hits?" he said with a laugh following the game. "Listen, I'd be happy with a 30-hitter as long as it was a shutout."

So far this season Mashburn has a 4-1 record with a 2.51 ERA.

EBL News: Draft Pool Revealed: Elyrian Baseball League divulged the 2157 list of eligible draftees today. It got little play in BNN coverage and why should it? Most players drafted in thirty days won't be on a big league club for years, if at all. Some will languish listlessly at the minor league level. Others will suffer a series of misfortunes, never quite making their mark, but always wowing scouts with their potential. And yet, some lucky team will draw a needle out of a haystack, send him off to the minors and forget about him for a while, only to realize they've got a Hall of Famer on their hands.

At any rate, teams now have thirty days to scout the draft pool prior to the draft. The Transactions page also gets a new section dedicated to the pool.

The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:
1. Jake Willis, 21 year-old SS out of college.
2. Karl Cauley, 18 year-old RF out of high-school.
3. Steve Campbell, 18 year-old CF out of high-school.
4. Nate Troughton, 21 year-old RHP out of college.
5. Austin McCleary, 21 year-old CF out of college.
6. Glen Fegan, 18 year-old CF out of high-school.
7. Luke Pogue, 21 year-old CF out of college.
8. Jeff Doerr, 18 year-old SS out of high-school.
9. Josh Bach, 21 year-old RHP out of college.
10. Pete Knudsen, 23 year-old 3B out of college.

LeCato Shackles Leyden: Nick LeCato kept the Leyden Seals hitters from doing any damage at Webster & Mitchell Ballpark today.

Leyden could only muster 1 hit and take 2 walks against the right-handed LeCato, who controlled them throughout the game as Ladue took the contest, 5-0. LeCato added 9 strikeouts in his complete-game effort.

"I don't know if I was on or if they were off today," LeCato told reporters after the shutout win. "But whatever it was, I hope it happens again next time."

To date this season, LeCato has a record of 1 win and 1 loss and a 3.62 ERA. He has appeared in 7 games and struck out 34 in 32.1 innings.

West Fires Shutout in Apache Victory: John West of the Soulard Apache spun his magic on the East Winslow Buccaneers today. He blanked them 9-0 on 2 hits, registering 12 strikeouts and 1 walk.

"The bottom line was I just kept the ball down," West said. "My breaking stuff was down. Everything was down."

Talking to reporters in the postgame interview, Soulard skipper Scott Zajac said the team "got solid pitching, good defense and took great team at-bats in a lot of different situations."

"John pitched really well but this was a solid performance by everyone," he said.

This season West has worked 36 innings with 38 strikeouts en route to a 2-2 record and a 4.25 ERA.

Myers Takes This Week's Trophy: So far in his young career, David Myers has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the Continentall League in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.

The 22-year-old Melrose Park Centaurs center fielder hit at a torrid .308 clip as he collected 8 hits in 26 at-bats, 3 home runs, 8 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

Bethke Chosen #1 Player: 27-year-old Mike Bethke made a few Bonhomme headlines during this past week as the rookie left fielder proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and National League officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.

He cracked 13 hits in 24 at-bats to put up a .542 average. Bethke collected 1 home run, 10 RBIs and scored 9 runs.

So far in 2157 Bethke is batting .384 with 5 home runs, 23 RBIs and 21 runs scored. He has 38 hits in 99 at-bats and a .404 OBP.

Old Town Whitewashed by Nebel: Today was Bill Nebel's turn in the rotation for the Elyria Continentals and he made the most of it, shutting out the Old Town Thugs on 5 hits.

The 24-year-old right-hander led the Continentals to an easy 7-0 victory, allowing 3 walks and tallying 8 strikeouts.

"I hope we miss him next time," Old Town manager Jay Doyle said. "Nebel certainly pitched a strong game against us today. He was in a groove, throwing everything for strikes. Throwing hard. Changing speeds."

For the season Nebel has compiled a 3-2 record with a 3.21 ERA.

Barrage of Hits Gets Aubuchon CL Award: At the age of 26, Alan Aubuchon might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The East Winslow third baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .550 batting average. For his efforts Aubuchon collected the Continentall League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 11 hits in 20 at-bats, 2 home runs and 4 RBIs last week in 6 games.

This season Aubuchon has hit at a .299 clip with 18 RBIs, 7 home runs and 20 runs scored. He has played in 36 games.

NL's Top Player Named: This week's best performer in the National League was second baseman Jon Grissinger of the Clayton Crows.

He slashed out a .625 average and was voted the Player of the Week. Over the last week Grissinger stroked 15 hits in 24 at-bats and no home runs, drove in 3 runs and scored 6 times.

Presently Grissinger is hitting .333 with 1 home run and 17 RBIs. He has played in 35 games and scored 20 times.

Weekly Team Power Rankings: Here are the current team power rankings for Elyrian Baseball League:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Trinidad City Jets (151.1, o)
2) Emmaus Pelicans (111.9, o)
3) Alameda Outlaws (102.5, ++)
4) Soulard Apache (101.9, +)

Not great but not terrible, ratings look bad as they are relative to the best pitchers in the league. Projected to go 12-8 with a 2.28 ERA and have 182 Ks in 209.1 innings pitched.

I've always found it difficult to get into fictional leagues but you've got a good pace going here and a format that makes it easy to keep up with it. I'll be following along. Good luck!

Well, if he can keep up that sweet 0.190 OBA then I'm happy. He can do a knucklecurve pitch as well, so I already like him.

Standings of the Elyrian Baseball League after 50 games

Trinidad City firm favorites to win National League outright now, Tamarac, New Charleroi and Clayton still far behind

News from around the EBL

5-Hit Game for Cunningham: The East Winslow Buccaneers might think twice next time about pitching to Paul Cunningham.

At J.P. Mech Field today, the New Charleroi Vipers second baseman burned East Winslow pitching, going 5-for-5 in a 6-1 New Charleroi triumph.

"When he's on his game," New Charleroi skipper Steve Boroff told reporters, "he can probably stroke a base hit blindfolded."

Paul Cunningham singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.

Cunningham is currently batting .336 with 1 home run and 9 RBIs.

Pelicans Shut Out Seals, Tuttle Winner: Everything clicked on the hill today for Ryan Tuttle as he hurled the Emmaus Pelicans to a 4-0 shutout win over the Leyden Seals, limiting them to 5 hits while recording 4 strikeouts and yielding 1 walk. He overpowered some batters with fastballs and buckled knees with sharp breaking pitches.

"We had our shot at him a couple of different times," Seals manager Jay Wills said. "We just weren't able to get to him."

For this year Tuttle has chalked up 4 wins and 2 losses in 9 starts with 42 strikeouts in 54.2 innings and a 3.95 ERA.

Carver on the Attack, Player of the Week: Steve Carver is respected by most New Charleroi Vipers fans for his no-frills style of play. The 32-year-old right fielder went about his business with vigor last week to grab the Continentall League Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .480 average (12-for-25) with 3 home runs, 9 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

Carver has a .366 average and a .414 on-base percentage for the year. He has picked up 37 hits, 7 home runs and driven in 23 runs.

NL Awards Player of the Week Trophy: His hard work and hustle paid off this week. The hard-working and hard-playing Jon Marinakis was rewarded with the National League Player of the Week honors.

The scrappy Clayton Crows shortstop hit .467 while collecting 14 hits in 30 at-bats, 1 home run and 8 RBIs.

In 43 games this season Marinakis has batted at a .374 pace with 68 hits and 5 home runs.

Edmonson Stops Bonhomme Cold: In a remarkable performance, Old Town Thugs starter Jeff Edmonson beat the Bonhomme Raiders 8-0 in an impressive 1-hit shutout.

"My arm felt good, mechanics were good and my stuff was working," he said later. "It doesn't get any better than this."

The Thugs hurler finished with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks. He showed pinpoint control and a sharp fastball.

"It was a rough one for my guys," Bonhomme manager Daniel Ryan said following the game. "We weren't at our best and their guy was."

This season Edmonson has a 2-6 mark in 10 starts with a 6.24 ERA. He has given up 63 hits in 53.1 innings, struck out 47 and issued 17 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .286 batting average against him.

Katz Holds Jets Scoreless: Paul Katz kept the opposition off the scoreboard and the Ladue Ducks were all smiles after winning 1-0 against the Trinidad City Jets at Webster & Mitchell Ballpark today. The right-handed Katz gave up no runs in his start, permitted 3 hits and had 6 strikeouts.

"If there was a stat for 'team shutout,' this would be it," Katz said later. "My catcher called a great game, guys delivered at the plate and when I messed something up the guys behind me were where they needed to be."

For the season Katz has logged 3 wins and 1 loss and struck out 59 batters in 64 innings while compiling a 2.39 ERA.

Scifres and Kenyon Suspended 6 Games: The shenanigans between the Old Town Thugs and Bonhomme Raiders will leave them a little short-handed for a few games. The Thugs Dustin Scifres and the Raiders Bob Kenyon were suspended by the league for 6 games following the on-field battle this week at Old Town Field.

Scifres currently has a .252 batting average with 35 hits, 5 homers, 21 RBIs, 10 runs scored and a .327 OBP.

On the year, Kenyon has recorded no saves with a 1-0 record over 14.1 innings. He has mowed down 12 batters on strikes and walked 2 with an ERA of 1.26.

Bonhomme Comes up Empty Against Hendley: Old Town Thugs pitcher Nick Hendley blanked the Bonhomme Raiders 6-0 at Bonhomme City Grounds today, tossing a 3-hitter while issuing 1 walk and collecting 8 strikeouts.

After his sharp shutout performance, he shared credit with the rest of the club.

"I was just locked in out there and some of that is due to having a catcher who has such a great feel for hitters," Hendley said. "I couldn't do what I did without all the guys out there today."

This season Hendley has compiled a 1-4 record with a 4.93 ERA.

EBL Standings after 60 games played

Standings stay relatively unchanged

Starr Learns More about Injury: A blow for Earl Starr today -- team doctors were able to determine the full extent of his recent injury. He will miss 4 months with a torn back muscle. Starr suffered the injury on 05/27/2157. The team will likely place Starr on the disabled list today.

This year Starr has collected no saves in 22 relief appearances. He has also compiled a 0-0 won-lost mark with a 1.67 ERA and fanned 30 batters in 27 innings. Opponents are hitting him at a .230 clip in 2157.

Chapman Week's Best in CL: At the age of 32, Jim Chapman might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Tamarac second baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .542 batting average. For his efforts Chapman collected the Continentall League Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 13 hits in 24 at-bats, 1 home run and 4 RBIs last week in 6 games.

Currently Chapman is batting .348 with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs.

Week's #1 Player: Ladue's Werner: Tim Werner is respected by most Ladue Ducks fans for his no-frills style of play. The 30-year-old first baseman went about his business with vigor last week to grab the National League Player of the Week honors.

He compiled a .414 average (12-for-29) with 3 home runs, 6 RBIs and 7 runs scored.

This year Werner is batting .337 with 66 hits, 9 home runs, 32 RBIs, 37 walks, .443 OBP and has scored 31 runs.

BNN Stats: The Rich Guys: Who has the richest contracts in the Elyrian Baseball League?

Joey Craton, CLA, $5,600,000
Robert Schaefer, BON, $5,150,000
Josh Jones, ELY, $5,000,000
Tommy Taft, ELY, $4,680,000
Jake Schoner, BON, $4,680,000

6-Hit Blitz by Ladue's Elliot: Jake Elliot said "it felt like taking batting practice" today at Continentals Ballpark, and it showed in the box score. The Ladue second baseman had a fantastic 6-for-7 day against the Elyria Continentals, leading his club to victory, 14-5.

"I was seeing the ball very well and it was going just about anywhere I wanted," Elliot said later."

Jake Elliot hit an RBI double in the 1st, hit a three-run home run off Mike Matthews in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th, doubled in the 8th and grounded out in the 9th.

To date Elliot has chalked up a .345 average with 11 home runs, driven in 51 runs and scored 28 times.

Big Day with Bat: Werner 5-for-5: It was a good day for the Ducks at Continentals Ballpark as they clipped the Elyria Continentals, 14-5. It was tremendous day for Tim Werner, who was on a hitting barrage at the plate, finishing 5-for-5.

"I don't know what to call that," the Ladue first baseman told reporters after his big performance. "I'm not 'dialed in' or 'in a zone,' I just try to keep it simple. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then I hit it. Today I picked up the spin pretty well."

Tim Werner singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Mike Matthews in the 4th, singled in the 5th, walked in the 6th, singled in the 8th and walked in the 9th.

Looking at his season stats, Werner has compiled a .353 batting average and a .459 on-base percentage, while hitting 10 home runs and driving in 34 runs.

Aaron Dutton Bashes Three over the Wall: Trinidad City shortstop Aaron Dutton blasted three homers today at Pelicans Ballpark in the 12-6 Jets victory over the Emmaus Pelicans.

For the game, Aaron Dutton scored 3 times and knocked in 7 runs. When he hit his last home run, his teammates, hearing the crack of the bat, leaped off the bench and rushed on the field to greet the jubilant Dutton when he reached home plate.

"It was just one game, but it sure was a lot of fun -- 3-for-5, three roundtrippers and a win," a gleeful Dutton told BNN reporters in a postgame interview. "What a day."

Aaron Dutton grounded out in the 1st, flied out in the 4th, hit a two-run home run off Mike McCormick in the 6th, hit a two-run home run off Dan Lanier in the 8th and hit a three-run home run off Chris Edwards in the 9th.

This year Dutton is batting .332 with 13 home runs. He has scored 41 runs and driven in 45.

Season Ends for Ritacco: In a news release, the Clayton Crows announced that left fielder Andy Ritacco would miss the rest of the season due to a broken bone in the elbow. Ritacco sustained the injury on 05/27/2157. He "will be sorely missed," said his manager.

This year Ritacco is hitting at a .302 pace with 9 home runs and 26 RBIs. He has played in 48 games and scored 39 times.

Rolston Set to Retire: Jesse Rolston said he's made enough money in professional baseball, so it's time to move on.

"I did pretty well for myself, my bank account isn't hurting, maybe I'll become a manager or a team owner or something so I can make even more," he said, announcing this season would be his last. "I'm 36 years old, so I've still got some time to make something of the rest of my life."

Fasullo Wins Best Bat Award in May: To Frank Fasullo, age is just a number.

He may be 42 years old, but the Soulard Apache right fielder proved in May that he's still got what it takes to compete at an elite level.

With a .376 average, 6 home runs, 20 RBIs, and 20 runs scored, Fasullo had all the numbers that counted and has won the Continentall League Batter of the Month award.

Fasullo is currently batting .317 with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs.

Trinidad City's Holmgren Bags NL Batting Award: Mike Holmgren has a lot going for him. The Trinidad City left fielder just broke into the majors this year and now the National League has just picked him as its top hitter for May.

In 27 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .350 with 7 home runs, 23 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

This season Holmgren is hitting at a .339 pace with 12 home runs, 41 RBIs and has scored 42 times.

McFarland Best CL Starter in May: In May, Aaron McFarland tore through the Continentall League like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 23 years old.

The young Soulard starter posted a 4-0 mark and an ERA of 1.94 to earn the Pitcher of the Month award. In 41.2 innings he collected 45 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .217 average.

This season McFarland has worked 70.2 innings with 62 strikeouts en route to a 5-2 record and a 3.06 ERA.

May's Best Starter Named in NL: Jason Murray took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the National League Pitcher of the Month award for May.

The 26-year-old Jets starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 5-1 won-lost record in 6 starts. This month he fanned 25 batters in 38 innings and compiled a 3.08 ERA.

This season Murray has a 6-1 record with a 4.22 ERA in 10 starts.

Carver Selected May's Top CL Rookie: When you think of rookies, you think of men in their early to mid-20's. Despite the fact that Steve Carver is 32, he made a big splash by putting up solid numbers to win Continentall League Rookie of the Month honors.

He told BNN reporters at the press conference, "I'm thrilled beyond words. All I can say is... better late than never."

In May, the New Charleroi right fielder hit .418 while rapping out 33 hits, 5 home runs, 22 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

This year Carver has 8 home runs and a .367 batting average.

NL Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Jon Marinakis earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the National League for last month's performance. The boyish Clayton shortstop might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Marinakis hit .385 with 4 home runs, 20 RBIs and 22 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

So far this year Marinakis has 8 home runs and a .377 batting average.

Davis Set to Miss 5 Weeks: The Tamarac Unforgiven have made it official: Steve Davis is headed to the disabled list. The 30-year-old first baseman has been out since 06/03/2157 with a sore elbow. He is expected to miss 5 weeks.

Davis is presently hitting at a .242 pace with 9 home runs and 25 RBIs. He has played in 51 games and scored 19 times.

EBL News: First-Year Player Draft: For the newcomer to professional baseball, today's amateur draft is a rite of passage. Every young player in the country is filtered through the draft pool, assessed, reassessed, scrutinized and run through several mock drafts even before they get to the real thing. But on draft day, once you've been picked, you have a shot to do what so few men in history have done, become a Elyrian Baseball League ballplayer. Emmaus, Soulard, Tamarac, East Winslow and Oakdale Park will have the first five picks. The top ten players, as rated by BNN, are:

1. Soulard - Glen Fegan, 18 year-old CF out of high-school.
2. Tamarac - Austin McCleary, 21 year-old CF out of college.
3. East Winslow Stags - Chris Lamson, 21 year-old SS out of college.

9. Ladue - Pete Knudsen, 23 year-old 3B out of college.
10. Trinidad City - Jake Willis, 21 year-old SS out of college.

League Standings

News Around the EBL

Renfrow Sensational, 5-for-6: It wasn't just another day at the ballpark for Dan Renfrow today. Renfrow went on a tear and cracked hit after hit off Ladue pitchers. When the dust settled on the diamond at Bonhomme City Grounds, he had a 5-for-6 line and a day he will long remember. And the Bonhomme Raiders had a 9-8 victory over the Ducks.

"Yeah, it'll be something nice to tell the grandkids, but it won't get me a hit tomorrow," he joked in the postgame interview.

Dan Renfrow singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, grounded out in the 5th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.

This season Renfrow is batting .322 with 89 hits, 8 home runs, 37 RBIs, 15 walks, .359 OBP and has scored 34 runs. He has played in 65 games.

Valentine Magnificent in Melrose Park Win: Cody Valentine of the Melrose Park Centaurs humiliated the Alameda Outlaws at Park of Centaurs today, spinning a complete game shutout and holding the visitors to 1 hit.

"He stayed aggressive and his ball was really moving," said Alameda manager Jimmy Jay, after the game.

Valentine whiffed 10 and walked 1 in the 4-0 win.

"If I make good pitches, I'm going to get some outs," Valentine said. "I was making good pitches the entire game."

This season Valentine has a 5-5 record with a 3.01 ERA.

Wheeler Sidelined for 5 Weeks: Emmaus fans will be disappointed to learn that D.J. Wheeler suffered a knee sprain while colliding with a player at a base in today's game. After the doctor informed the Emmaus Pelicans manager that Wheeler was expected to miss 5 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the second baseman could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

In his 2157 season totals, Wheeler has 4 home runs, .269 BA, .350 OBP, 21 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

Collett Sparkles, Blanks East Winslow: Joe Collett of the Oakdale Park Ravens humiliated the East Winslow Stags at Gardner Fields today, spinning a complete game shutout and holding the visitors to 6 hits.

"He stayed aggressive and his ball was really moving," said East Winslow manager Brad Sanders, after the game.

Collett whiffed 6 and walked 1 in the 6-0 win.

"If I make good pitches, I'm going to get some outs," Collett said. "I was making good pitches the entire game."

This year Collett has a 7-2 record with a 2.20 ERA in 14 starts.

Surgeon Sensational, 5-for-5: Aaron Surgeon exploded for a barrage of base hits today at Field of the Jets.

The Trinidad City second baseman had a field day in the 13-5 triumph over the Ladue Ducks, finishing 5-for-5.

"My hitting philosophy is simple," he said. "I focus on just seeing the ball and I try to get a good pitch."

Surgeon must have focused at least 5 times and apparently got some good pitches, too, leading to one of his best days ever with the bat. Aaron Surgeon singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Ryan Stansberry in the 4th, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

So far this season Surgeon has hit .351 with 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 24 times.

Party's Over: Buza Retires in Clayton: The Clayton Crows will have to find a new reliever next year as veteran Danny Buza is set to retire at the end of the 2157 campaign.

Buza, age 38, is ready for retirement. "Time takes its toll on this old body. I can't do it as well as I want anymore. It's time to hang up the spikes and make way for a younger guy."

Trade Alert!!

Done Deal: Anderson for Wilcox: Both sides appear content with the trade finalized today that will send 31-year-old minor league C Ryan Anderson to the Alameda Outlaws, while the Oakdale Park Ravens will receive 35-year-old minor league 2B Jonathan Wilcox.

"This is a move that filled a few gaps in our roster," said Matt Jennings, Ravens general manager.

For his part, the Outlaws GM said the trade was made "in the best interest of our organization's future." BNN analysts reported that on paper the trade seemed to be a plus for both ball clubs. The players involved are expected to join their new teams for the next scheduled game.

News Around the EBL

Kentala Blasts 3 out of the Park: It was a good day for the Trinidad City Jets and an exceptional one for Taylor Kentala. The 26-year-old catcher sent three bombs out of the park to help the Jets beat the Ladue Ducks 10-5 at Field of the Jets.

"When you're in the zone, the game really slows down," Kentala said when asked about his performance later. "I couldn't even tell you what pitches were thrown. Today feels great, but it is a long season and tomorrow is another day."

For the day, he scored 3 times, drove in 3 runs and smacked 3 hits in 4 at-bats.

Taylor Kentala hit a solo-shot off Paul Katz in the 2nd, grounded out in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Tim Spires in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off Ryan Stansberry in the 8th.

So far in 2157 Kentala is batting .335 with 13 home runs, 50 RBIs and 47 runs scored. He has 68 hits in 203 at-bats and a .429 OBP.

CL Awards Player of the Week Trophy: At the age of 29, Joe Duncan might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The New Charleroi shortstop put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .455 batting average. For his efforts Duncan collected the Continentall League Player of the Week Award.

Duncan is hitting .360 this year with 15 home runs, 56 RBIs and 44 runs scored. He has 86 hits in 239 at-bats, 28 walks and a .422 on-base percentage. Duncan has played in 68 games.

NL Player of the Week Selected: 26-year-old Taylor Kentala made a few Trinidad City headlines during this past week as the rookie catcher proved he could compete at the plate with his high-school idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and National League officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.

He cracked 11 hits in 17 at-bats to put up a .647 average. Kentala collected 7 home runs, 12 RBIs and scored 9 runs.

For the year Kentala is batting .335 with 68 hits and 13 home runs. He has scored 47 times and driven in 50.

Mazur Out 5 Weeks: The Emmaus Pelicans have made it official: Nate Mazur is headed to the disabled list. The 26-year-old left fielder has been out since 06/19/2157 with shoulder tendinitis. He is expected to miss 5 weeks.

This year Mazur has socked 59 hits in 202 at-bats for a .292 average with 18 home runs. He is getting on base at a .365 pace and his totals also include 49 RBIs and 42 runs scored.

Great Day for Marinakis -- 5 Hits: Getting 5 hits in a game has always been memorable feat in baseball. In the Clayton's 8-5 win over Elyria today, shortstop Jon Marinakis was red-hot, scorching them for hit after hit at Sizemore Park.

"To hit the ball consistently well, you have to relax," Marinakis said afterward. "I was relaxed for the first four hits, but I have to admit, I got a little tight when I realized I had a chance for five. On the last at-bat, I was ready to swing at anything close."

Jon Marinakis singled in the 2nd, hit a two-run home run off Brent Connors in the 4th, singled in the 6th, doubled in the 9th, grounded out in the 11th and singled in the 13th.

Looking at his season stats, Marinakis has compiled a .378 batting average and a .423 on-base percentage, while hitting 12 home runs and driving in 54 runs.

Grissinger Stretches Hit String to 20: The Clayton Crows may have proven to be mere mortals today as they lost 11-3 to the Trinidad City Jets, but Jon Grissinger continued to hit like a god.

The second baseman collected 1 hit in 4 at-bats in the loss and extended his hitting streak to 20 games.

"Grissinger is playing great and is on fire right now," Crows manager Austin Dial said. "Hopefully his play can spark the rest of our team and help us pick up some wins."

Grissinger was apparently not happy with the game and when pressed by reporters in the locker room only said "nothing else matters but the loss."
Jon Grissinger flied out in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, struck out in the 6th and struck out in the 8th.

Presently Grissinger is batting .341 with 1 home run and 46 RBIs. He has played in 71 games and scored 42 times.

Thus far this season in 26 games Ernst is batting .383 with 3 home runs, 25 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He has 36 hits in 94 at-bats.
