Potential NFL rule changes

Looks like bye-bye to PI reviews. Thank goodness. I want the sky judge. I haven't seen much negative impact in the other leagues & colleges.

Other potential rule changes. I do want to see OT changes & for them to bring some excitement back to the kick return.

I like the idea where instead of doing kickoffs at all, after you score you get the ball at your own 40, needing 11(? I forget the actual stats there that make sense) yards for a first down. You’ll usually punt it but if you want to go for it, you can.

My issue is that in addition to being the most dangerous play in the game - even in the old days the kickoff and return teams were known as the “suicide squad” - the kickoff is also the most boring play. John Bois did a study of all KO return TDs since the 80s and found that all of them, like every single one, are “a guy makes one cut at most and outruns everybody”. Those “run all over the place and somehow find a hole” returns come on punts.

Onside kicks and OT huh?

There's really not a lot you can do in the game of football to make OT totally fair and maintain the integrity of the game. You'd have to resort to a gimmick. Move the OT back to 15 minutes and the first team to score 7 wins. If the quarter ends the team with the lead wins. No need for any of the other rules.

I can't comment on onside kicks because I'm in favor of going back to the original kickoff when they had it from the 30 yard line.

I'd get rid of OT except in the playoffs. In the postseason, just play 15 minutes quarters till there is a winner.

nfl overtime is fine. It's about as close to 50% as you are going to get and more fair than college where going second is a huge advantage. This isn't basketball where you can just play more time. Even if you just play another full quarter getting the ball first means you have an extra possession.

If the team who gets the ball first had to start on their own 10 instead of getting a kickoff then it would be better to be on defense.
