Market Size - Am I Stuck?
Hi all - LONG time OOTP user (v6? earlier?) but first-time poster here on the boards, it appears. Or at least it's been so long that I was purged or something.
Anyway - I have a longtime local dynasty (started this one in OOTP19, still going in OOTP21). Somewhere along the line my Market Size dipped to 'minimal'. And today, for the first time, I activated Commissioner Mode to see just how low it is. Drumroll...it's a '1'. I know market size moves extreeeeeemeeeellllyyyy slowly. But I also read on this board somewhere that if Market Size is a 1, the game, quote, "can't handle it". Dunno what that means, exactly. Should I alter the market size to '2' in order to start some sort of growth? Might it grow from 1 if I'm patient enough? I'm willing to be patient, but I don't need to tilt at windmills. Thanks! |

I understand that. It's not really the way I play though.
Basically, if I have hope that it *will* change, I'm content to play it as it lies. But if there's absolutely no way it will change from '1' because of a glitch, I'd prefer to fix it. |

When I have seen Market Size drop from 2 to 1, it will sometimes go up to 2. Just as often, however, it drops back to 1 from there. I am not sure I have ever seen a Market Size of 1 turn into anything I would consider competitive (I am talking 60+ seasons of play). If you are sticking it out, you need to either have some sort of shared revenue model... or you need to be happy with the handicap you are giving yourself against the AI (certainly a place for this as well).

I would change it at least back to 2.
You can always kayfabe it by saying that your city experienced some growth.

market size can and does grow. I haven't heard of the "can't grow past 1" glitch, but I have an easy way for you to test it. start a new game, one that you don't care about, and set the market size of a team to 1. Then sim forward 10, 20, or 30 seasons to see what happens. Maybe do this a couple times

I never sim multiple seasons in a row anymore - I did a long time ago, when I was in an online league and we got to play around with the unlocked file for a bit - but I guess maybe this is time. I'm always wary of going into Commissioner Mode because it seems like every time I do, and then go back, my team suddenly goes on a serious losing streak And thanks to the others who provided input! |

For my 32 team fictional league based on the MLB expanding after WWII, I start all 32 teams at market size 7 and crank out 15 years. Usually one team has dropped to 5 and one team rises to 9 with the others in the 6-8 band.
So yes, market sizes change slowly and randomly.
