Did teams in 1904 have enough players?

in 1904 they didn't play with 25 man rosters. 14 or 15 was the norm then.

Why do you have imported real L/R split off, PH for pitchers set to Very Rarely, and two-way players off?

Very interested in your answers as I continue to attempt to find my "proper" settings.

There was enough players even though I played with 4 extra teams. I did this this to thin out the league a bit. This allows players to perform to their ability more consistently and it is not as likely that a great player ends up on the bench behind another great player at the same position on a team. You can probably get good results with 16 teams in this time period but you may need to boost the import settings to perhaps 150/120 or something. Remember that the game will always play the best players as much as possible, and this makes OOTP more competitive than MLB. This results in pulling the player results toward the league average. By adding more teams it sort of restores the balance and allows the best players to still perform as they should. Again, you can probably get the same results with 16 teams but using higher import settings. At the end of the 1871-2017 game the best franchise had a Win % of .512 and the worst had a .488.

Regarding the import settings, remember that if you use 120/100 and 5-yr that these are an average per season. So 120*5 = 600 and 100*5 = 500 This means that for players to import without penalty that they only need to have 600 AB over the 5-yr span of the recalc. This is plenty to create legitimate ratings for players as they don't get much more than 600 AB in a season anyway. 5-yr recalc will also get you through the WWII seasons nicely as well.

For pitchers I use 25/18 for import. Remember that SP's get quadruple this amount. So 25*4*5 = 500 IP. So any pitcher with 500 IP over a 5-yr span will not get adjusted. This means a sample of 2000 or more Batters Faced. Again, no SP will face that many in a single season so the sample size is plenty. For relievers 25*5 = 125 IP and that will probably be at least 500 Batters Faced as well, plenty to base representative ratings on.

Nap Lajoie
.353/.397/.485 vs .338/.379/.467

With regards to the other settings they were done to obtain the most realistic bullpen usage and results. If you use Very Low for Stamina then the relievers will get shelled in modern seasons and if you use Normal then you will have relievers making 100 appearances or consistently throwing more than 100 IP in other seasons. I found that with Low stamina and Very Often for relievers that the relievers tend to have about the same ERA as the SP's. You can see this in team pitching statistics. I found that a bullpen size as 1 more than rotation size has been working well too.

If you get some odd results in your leagues in terms of league leaders it may be due to bullpen issues. I see this happen. If you use settings that get relievers shelled then you end up with randomness in the hitting results. Some players will get lucky and just end up facing poorly performing bullpens more often. That's what seems to happen at least.

HR's tend to be down about 4% every season in the game too if you look at the historical accuracy report. Save your game before clicking on this though because it will occasionally cause the game to crash now. So my solution is to wait until opening da after the gam calculates the modifiers and then multiply the game's calculated HR modifier by 1.04 and type that in. I then tend to get pretty good results. The game is off by something like 3-5% in HRs and while that doesn't seem like much it tends to make a difference for the top guys in the league. If you don't make this adjustment then OOTP will be in the negative just about every season.

Thank you for the detailed information.
Just wondering about Jack Chesbro.
It is pretty easy to compare batters OOTP stats with their real life stats but what stats would you use to compare pitchers real life results vs. ootp. I personally use WHIP and stikeouts since wins/losses are more team dependent.

Did you have players miss seasons according to history also? What happened to Ted Williams?

Also, did you allow starting pitchers to pitch in relief?
Thanks

Just for clarification on the above post. You DO let players play during seasons they missed in real life (unless I misread the above post)???
Thanks, now I am tempted to start another league.

Yes, players will not miss seasons. This is why I use 5-yr recalc. If players missed a few seasons like in WWII there is generally still enough stats in the 5-yr span to still give the good ratings.

For import settings for pitchers you could probably go with 18/14 instead of 25/18.
